Work Text:

Iwaizumi manages to hold the rest of his tears in until their bus arrives back at Aoba Johsai. He watches as the rest of the team file out of the bus, all sharing conversation that Iwaizumi unintentionally blocks out, too focused on the tears brimming in his eyes. He flinches when an arm wraps around his shoulders, and a chin is placed atop his head. Iwaizumi takes a second to register the fact Oikawa’s holding him into his chest, but the second it clicks into place, Iwaizumi can’t hold back his tears any longer. His hands come up to grab onto Oikawa’s jacket, gripping the material hard as he sobs into his boyfriend’s chest. Oikawa’s other arm snakes around his waist, holding him close as he nuzzles into the top of Iwaizumi’s head, his breath tickling his hair as he sighs out.

“My place.” It’s a statement instead of a question, and Iwaizumi only nods into Oikawa’s chest, deciding not to argue against it at the time being. He doesn't know how long they stand at the gates of Aoba Johsai, simply bawling into Oikawa’s chest, his tears staining the other’s shirt. It's only once Iwaizumi lifts his head that Oikawa starts to guide him away and towards his place.

It’s quiet when Oikawa pushes the door open to his place. No sign of his mother or even Oikawa’s loveable golden retriever. The usually active and pleasantly noisy Oikawa household is eerily quiet and borderline uncomfortable. The first noise Iwaizumi hears is the click of Oizawa closing the door behind him and a soft sniffle from himself. With an arm around Iwaizumi’s waist, Oikawa practically drags him further into the house and towards his room, pressing Iwaizumi to the other side of his door and pressing his face into Iwaizumi’s neck. As Iwaizumi’s arms snake around Oikawa’s back, his shoulders start to shake with gentle sobs, and Iwaizumi’s neck soon becomes wet from Oikawa’s tears.

It’s a mutual mourning of their high school volleyball days. Their last chance to play together in a tournament, their final chance to get into Nationals ripped away from them before they could even get to Shirotorizawa in the finals. Iwaizumi’s thoughts run wild in his head. Could he have changed things? If he had hit that final ball better, could he have scored a point? Bring it to deuce and force the game to go on for longer until Aoba Johsai eventually won?

“I can hear your thoughts, Iwa.” Oikawa’s words are muffled against his neck, his hands moving from limp by his sides to around Iwaizumi’s waist once again. “I think we would have lost no matter what. If I had served better, if we had subbed Mad Dog on at any other time. No matter what would have changed, I think we were always bound to lose to Karasuno. It’s a shame. I enjoyed playing volleyball with you. I wanted to go to Nationals with you and the others.” Oikawa lifts his head, tucking Iwaizumi’s under his chin. Iwaizumi tights his arms around Oikawa, his nails digging his nails into the other’s back. “We played well. All of us. We did everything we could. I think that’s what matters more than anything else.” Iwaizumi finds his words surprisingly soothing. He did try his best. All of them did. They threw every punch they could and yet Karasuno hit harder. With a sigh, Iwaizumi relaxes in Oikawa’s hold. His captain- former captain, leans back slightly from the embrace to meet Iwaizumi’s eyes. He goes to speak, but Iwaizumi leans in and steals a kiss before Oikawa can get the words out. It takes a moment for the other to reciprocate the affection, but when he does Oikawa melts into it, leaning much more of his weight than necessary on Iwaizumi. He retaliates with a, gentle for his standards, kick to the shin. Oikawa pulls away from the kiss with a whine, taking a step back from Iwaizumi.

“You’re heavy.” Iwaizumi mutters under his breath, a faint smirk on his face as Oikawa pouts dramatically.

“First you initiate affection and then you’re kicking me! You’re such a bully sometimes.” While his words lack some of his usual spark, Iwaizumi can also tell Oikawa is definitely feeling better than he did at the end of their match. Iwaizumi chuckles lightly, placing a firm shove to Oikawa’s chest, sending him tumbling back onto his bed, hitting his mattress with a pathetic little huff. For a man as prideful as Oikawa, he was also ridiculously cute.

“Hey! You can’t just shove me around in my own house- oh-” While Oikawa speaks, Iwaizumi crawls over the top of Oikawa, bracing his arms on either side of his head. Iwaizumi holds back a smirk as Oikawa’s face flushes a satisfying shade of pink.

“Will you stop complaining?” Iwaizumi’s words hold no bite to them. Oikawa’s flusterness fades quickly, and his arms curl themselves around Iwaizumi's neck, a hand playing with the hairs at the nape of his neck.

“Kiss me and I might consider it.” Oikawa’s grinning like an idiot which just makes him impossibly sweeter. Iwaizumi leans down and meets Oikawa half way, unable to resist the urge to curl an arm around Oikawa’s back, pulling the other closer to him, despite the minimal space between them already. Oizawa lets out a soft sigh as he pulls away from the kiss, meeting Iwaizumi’s gaze for a brief moment before pressing his face into his neck. He behaves for all of two seconds before he playfully bites at Iwaizumi’s neck, causing the ace to squirm slightly under Oikawa’s attack.

“Quit it.” Iwaizumi brings a hand down to pitch Oikawa’s side, smirking as the other squeals under his counter attack.

“No fair! I told you not to do that- Hey!” Oikawa squeals once again when Iwaizumi jabs him in the other side. Both break into a fit of giggles before meeting each other half way in another kiss, sinking into each other’s warmth. “Thank you, Hajime. For so many years of great games.” Iwaizumi shakes his head slightly, leaning in to steal one more kiss from Oikawa.

“Thank you for setting the ball for me over and over again, Toru.” Iwaizumi presses his forehead to Oikawa’s, who hums contently at the slightest bit of affection as always.

“I like it when you call by my name. Much better than those mean nicknames you give me.” Iwaizumi huffs at Oikawa’s complaint, flicking him lightly on the tip of his nose before pressing a kiss to the same space.

“You complain too much.” Iwaizumi ends Oikawa’s next complaint by putting all his weight onto the other, sending him back against the mattress. While he considers whining, Oikawa determines that he’s rather content having Iwaizumi’s entire weight on top of him. He wraps his arms tightly around the other, nuzzling into his hair as they relax into each other’s embrace, their previous loss temporarily forgotten.
