Work Text:
The moment Jim walked into the café, he noticed the beautiful woman standing in line. She stood out, because she wasn't wearing a cadet uniform, but also because of her elaborate hairstyle and make-up. Jim wasn't sure if she was human, but it's not like it mattered to him anyway.
He ignored Bones, who had already gotten them a table and was trying to motion him over, in favor of approaching the captivating woman. He stretched out his hand in greeting.
- Hi, I'm James Kirk. -
She looked down at his hand, but didn't shake it. Nor did she say anything. Alright, fine, he could do without a handshake, but he at least wanted to get her name.
- And you are? -
After a moment of silence, she finally spoke.
- I am called Natira. -
It was good to know she was at least willing to talk to him.
- What are you doing at the Academy, Natira? You don't look like a student. -
- For what purpose do you require this information? -
Or maybe not.
- I just thought we could get to know each other better. Maybe get coffee together or something. -
- No. -
- No coffee? -
- No, we shall not "get to know each other better". -
Ouch, alright, message received.
- Ok, got it, I'll uuh go sit with my friend then. -
Jim pointed at the table where Bones was sitting as he started awkwardly backing away.
Natira glanced behind him and suddenly her whole demeanor changed. Before, she'd looked tense, but in a matter of seconds she seemed to relax and become comfortable.
She raised her palm to indicate Bones.
- He is your friend? -
Maybe they knew each other — that would explain the attitude change. If Bones was willing to be a wingman, this could actually be helpful, although Jim wasn't sure if he even wanted to get with Natira anymore.
- Yeah, you know him? -
Surprisingly, she shook her head.
- I would like to be introduced to him. -
- Ok, I can do that, I guess. -
Jim wasn't sure what was happening anymore. Had he become the wingman? They approached Bones, who was angrily glaring at him. He probably expected Jim to say he was ditching him to go on a date.
- Don't look so angry, this pretty lady would like to talk to you. -
Bones looked over at Natira and his furrowed eyebrows relaxed a little. He stood up and extended his right hand for a handshake.
- The name's Leonard McCoy, nice to meet you. -
Natira took his hand in both of hers, but instead of shaking it, she brought it to her lips and kissed it.
- I am Natira of Yonada. Tell me, McCoy, are you spoken for? -
A faint blush appeared on Bones' cheeks. Jim had never seen him flustered before, and frankly he found it unsettling... This whole thing was unsettling.
- No, I'm not, I'm... I've recently divorced. -
He said it like he was revealing something shameful, but Natira definitely didn't think so, 'cause she looked goddamn elated.
- I am pleased to hear you are unattached. Would you be willing to enter into a romantic relationship with me with the intention of it leading to marriage? -
- You're serious? -
- Yes, it is not in my nature to hide my feelings. -
- Alright... I uuh don't know about the whole marriage thing, but I'd love to get to know you better. -
Natira smiled. Jim frowned. He definitely did not need to be here for this conversation.
- McCoy may buy me coffee if he wishes and then we can talk. -
And with that, they both left to go stand in line and plan out their future or whatever.
Jim couldn't believe what had just happened. In a span of like 5 minutes he'd hit on a girl, gotten rejected and then that same girl had proposed to his best friend. Maybe he wasn't as charming as he thought he was... No, that couldn't be it.
He sat down and took a sip of the coffee Bones had gotten him. It had already gotten cold.
Maybe it just wasn't his day.
