Chapter Text
“An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break” Miles rolled his eyes, that can't be true. An invisible red string? Give the man a break, seriously. He just broke up with his girlfriend, after finding out she cheated on him, and tried to embarrass her with his best friend, Kira, and accidentally ended up kissing a random man, who then kissed him again, he wonders how his father would feel about that. Today was a disaster. The only good thing was being accepted into Everett industries. Which he never got to celebrate, how fun.
Miles rolled onto his back, laying in his bed facing the roof. He lifts his left hand up to inspect his hand. A ‘soulmate’ would be nice, a red viewable string would be nice, instead of some invisible one, but people, especially Miles, don't get that luxury. Miles puts his hand down, rolling onto his side once again, curling into himself. Tomorrow was a big day, his first day working at Everett industries. He couldn’t be late, Miles let his eyes fall down, letting sleep capture him.
~
The first thing Miles noticed when he woke up with a faint little red wavy line from his left hand, pinky finger. He was shocked, stunned and flabbergasted. The thing he was making fun of barely even a day ago, had just appeared. Wow how convenient. He wondered where the line went, and who did it go too. This can’t be happening. Why now? But he still has to work, so he'd have to find out later.
Instead of peddling his bike to work, Kira offered to drive him. He had no idea how Kira was such a good friend. It's a wonder Miles never had a crush on her. They’ve been friends since before Miles can remember, they grew up together, told each other everything and only grew stronger between bad friends. Miles was the first person to find out that Kira was a lesbian, and even though he didn’t know how to feel, all he knew was that he wanted to go against his fathers beliefs, so he supported her. Through thick and thin.
On the way there they talked about anything, and everything that popped into mind. Miles mentioned the red string and Kira seemed happy.
“Finally, something might go your way for once” She joked, and while it did hurt him a bit, it was true, nothing went the way miles intended it to be.
While they drove the line got more noticeable, ‘weird’ Miles thought, but he didn't pay it any more time than that.
~
Miles was stunned at the next few events. They happened way too quick for him to comprehend. Firstly, the closer he got to Everett Industries the brighter the string got, which scared him, look he was all for meeting his soulmate. But not on the first day of his internship. But whatever, surely he wouldn’t find out who it was straight away.
Miles pulled his phone out to recount what floor he was, 17th, great, perfect, cool he thought in a sarcastic tone. He barely managed to get into the elevator as it was closing. But as he was, he noticed something. The string hurt. Like it was burning his hand. It hurt. He turned down to look at his finger, the skin around the string was in fact going a bright red. He looked at the string, which was now glowing and no longer wavy. It was tight, there was no tension at all. He looked up again and noticed that everyone in the elevator had disappeared.
Could this day get any stran-
Yes, yes it could. Through the doors he saw him. That lanky but somehow strangely strong body, which was about 9 inches taller than him. He looked down, he needed to take the elevator, his asthma couldn’t handle all those stairs. He didn’t care how awkward it would be. But something he noticed was the string. Not only did it now hurt like hell it was facing the way of Hunter. He turned his head to the side to look at Hunter's hand. And it did in fact tie around his pinky. Oh hell no. This couldn’t be happening. All he had to do was get through the day, it couldn't be that hard.
That is, when he gets forced into a personal assistant role for The CEO, aka Hunter which was another thing he found out. And then get blackmailed by his high school bully. Which honestly, he didn’t care about. In another life, maybe sure he cared about his father finding out he kissed a boy, but in this one he couldn't care less. He wasn’t a child anymore. He was a grown adult. Who was over his fathers hidden abuse. His best friend was a lesbian for Christ sake, wait. Can he even say that now? Whatever, who cares if he likes boys, why does gender even matter if you're in love?
He was told to do a physical examination on Hunter by a girl; he later found out her name was Fiona. When he reached the office and Hunter's top was already off he wasn’t surprised. What he was surprised about was how perfect his body was. He grabbed out his stethoscope and started getting to work, ‘his body was in perfect shape’ Miles thought to himself. So far his heart beat was normal, maybe a little fast but normal nonetheless. Miles looked up at Hunter a few times, and each time Hunter would stare back with his gorgeous blue eyes.
Miles couldn’t get used to the constant sting that the red line wrapped around his pinky caused. The closer he got to Hunter the worse the pain got. He wondered if this was God's punishment for him kissing, or silently discovering he liked, men.
“Is the examination done?” Hunter asked when they had stared at each other for a bit too long. The burning sensation which is starting to become more and more hard to notice.
“Oh, um! Yes, yes sorry, well good news, whatever your previous assistant gave you, clearly has had no effect on you” Miles responded back. Hunter then picked up a file and looked in it then looked at Miles and then the file and then the file was placed back on the desk. Miles watched as the string went up and then back down again.
“Perfect, come help me look at..” and his sentence went quiet. Miles heard something about him having an ED but surely that wasn't what he wanted Miles to look at. right?
“Look at..?” Miles asked, there was no way he was sticking his hands down Hunter's pants to see if he had an ED or not. Especially when his hand probably would cause bad burns.
“Oh, at these stitches I got a while back while rock climbing and never had them removed.” Hunter responded back while still unbuttoning his shirt. Thank anyone and everyone he double checked to make sure what he was looking at.
“Sitiches? Still in? After how long?” Miles questioned Hunter, who was starting to become lost with the medical questions.
“Just over a month” He responded hoping that would help Miles figure it out.. Whatever it was he needed to figure out.
Once the day was over, and Kira picked Miles up they had their usual chats.
“Oh my god, Kira, you aren’t going to believe this.” Miles started the second he got into the car.
“Who is that..” Kira was completely unfocused looking in the direction of someone with a blue, sleeveless top, and bright pink pants, with dark brown hair.
“Oh her? That's Fiona, she's Hunter’s HR manager I’m pretty sure.” Miles responded.
“She's cute…” Kira started having make believe hearts in her eyes, Miles looked disgusted.
“Can we go, I have too much to say and I can't say it while you're too busy ogling at my Boss’s best friend or potential girlfriend.” And that seemed to break her of her trance, then she started driving. And everything just spilled from Miles. From the string to the crazy events to how the guy he kissed the other day was now his boss and just everything spilled until he needed to use his puffer to calm down.
“Wow.. that sounds like a lot.” Kira answered. She seemed unsure how to even answer all that. “How about we get you home, and uh i’ll steal all the food in your pantry while you sleep!’
“Kira!”
“Joking, joking!”
