Work Text:

The hospital was unusually quiet for a Friday evening, the kind of quiet that carried its own hum of peace. For once, Amelia wasn’t racing between surgeries, pages, and emergencies. She was in the attendings’ lounge, curled up with a medical journal. The door pushed open, and Monica slipped inside. She was balancing two paper cups, her dark hair slightly mussed, her smile patient and knowing.

“I come bearing gifts,” Monica announced, setting the cups down. “One herbal tea.”

Amelia arched an eyebrow. “Herbal tea isn’t coffee. You’re lucky I like you.”

“You love me,” Monica teased, sliding onto the couch beside her.

Amelia tried for a mock glare, but it melted instantly at Monica’s grin. She let her head fall against Monica’s shoulder with a sigh. “Yeah. I do.”

For a long moment, there was nothing but the sound of them breathing together, a little cocoon carved out of the chaos.

“Want to get out of here?” Monica murmured. “I checked the board. You’re not on call tonight.”

Amelia blinked. “You checked my schedule?”

“Of course I did. I was hoping to kidnap you.” Monica laced their fingers together, thumb brushing Amelia’s knuckles. “Dinner somewhere that isn’t the cafeteria. Or—” her voice softened, conspiratorial— “we could just go home...”

Amelia smiled. “That sounds perfect.”

Later, they laid naked in their bed, a ridiculous rom-com playing in the background. Amelia’s laughter was muffled against Monica’s shoulder, and Monica’s hand traced slow circles on her back.

"Why do they always have to run to each other in the rain? I've never ran to someone in the rain. Just text," Monica said.

"You wouldn't run through the rain for me?" Amelia asked teasingly.

But Monica knew she actually did need to be soothed. She pressed a kiss to her head. "I'd always run though the rain for you."

"I would too," Amelia whispered.

In that moment, Amelia realized that happiness wasn’t some fleeting miracle waiting to be stolen—it was right here, with someone who saw her, who stayed, who brought her herbal tea just because. And for once, Amelia let herself believe in happy endings.

You guys, tonight sucks.
