Work Text:
The sun beat down mercilessly on them, forcing Amity to shield her eyes in order to see anything at all. Camila was setting up a so-called “pool” with the help of Gus and Hunter. Willow, Vee, and Luz got their beach gear, while Amity's job was to put the drinks in the fridge for later and prepare ice cubes.
She watched in admiration as Camila let water run into the large pool. The sun was beating down so hot on Amity's skin that she couldn't wait to finally jump into the cool water. A pool, Luz had explained to them, was a large basin of water where you could cool off and refresh yourself in the summer.
“We're here!” Luz exclaimed enthusiastically, and Amity turned to her girlfriend.
“What's that?” she asked, looking skeptical as Luz held out a huge slice of pizza. It was bigger than Luz herself and definitely not edible. “It's an air mattress,” Luz explained with a laugh, “You can lie on it in the water.”
Amity's face must have spoken volumes, because Luz laughed so hard. Amity looked curiously at the pizza -shaped air mattress while Luz brought more *water toys* with the others. In the end, they had a few pool noodles, a floating donut, and a beach ball.
Amity didn't understand why humans named everything they took into the water after food, but she didn't care; she wanted to finally go swimming, since everyone else had already changed into their swimsuits.
“Have fun in the pool and don't forget to put on sunscreen,” Camila said goodbye to them, as she unfortunately had to work today.
“Yes, Mom,” Luz called after her, took a large tube out of a bag, squeezed out a generous amount, and spread it on her skin. “Here, this is for you,” Luz said, handing the tube to Amity.
“Uh, no thanks,” she said defensively, “it's too sticky.”
“Sunscreen is important, you don't want to get sunburned,” Luz insisted, looking sternly at her girlfriend.
“Maybe later, let's go swimming now,” said Amity, linking arms with Luz. Sighing, Luz gave in and handed the sunscreen to Gus.
The day at the pool was great. After losing a close water polo match against Willow, Gus, and Hunter, Amity and Luz won the horseback battle, but the highlight for her was the pizza. Why hadn't Luz told her how great it was to lie on an air mattress and float around?
After getting some sunglasses, she was able to relax comfortably and enjoy the sun, dipping her arm or foot in the water from time to time. Vee bobbed around in the water in the donut floaty, Gus dove for rings, and Luz practiced what she called water aerobics with Willow and Hunter. It was more like a contest to see who could do a handstand underwater the longest, but they all had fun. A truly perfect day.
In the afternoon, they took a short snack break and got out of the pool.
“Hey, are you a little red?” Gus asked, chewing, and Amity looked at her arm. It was a little flushed, probably from the sun. Willow’s face was also a tad flushed, but the girls didn’t pay much attention to it.
“It’ll go away soon.”
Unfortunately, it didn’t just go away.
When they got out of the pool that evening, Amity was bright red and everything hurt. She lay face down on a towel, whining, while Luz rubbed aloe vera on her. Sadly, it didn't help much.
“Why didn't you guys get sunburned?” Amity complained.
"Camila said we should put on sunscreen, so we did,” Hunter said with a hint of schadenfreude, and Gus added with a laugh, “and that's why we don't look like a tomato.”
“I told you to put cream on,” Luz scolded her girlfriend, continuing to spread aloe vera on her red skin. “If that doesn’t help, we’ll need yogurt,” Vee muttered thoughtfully, and Amity looked at her in horror. “I’m not a dessert!”
Luz laughed, “Normally, yes, but right now you're more like a burned sweet potato.”
The others burst out laughing, and Amity pouted offendedly; this was not how she had imagined the day would end.
