CHAPTER 1: THEY’RE PLAYING PIANO

Noelle chuckles as Kris plays.
“Fahahaha! Kris, since when were you into sea shanties?”
“It’s not, Elly, it’s…”
They struggle to find an explanation without jeopardising the secrecy of the dark worlds.
“Yeah, it’s a sea shanty…” Kris “admits” in defeat. Noelle runs her hand through their hair.
“Just don’t start saying yo-ho-ho. It’s ho ho ho only in this house!” Noelle jokes.
“Neither is fine with me.” Kris smirks. They arise from the piano, and go over to the counter and pour out some chocolate milk into a glass.
“I’ve begged Mom to buy me this, but she just says it’s bad for my teeth.” They start to imitate their mother. “Oh, my child, it’ll rot your teeth! Even if you just have one tiny sip, all of your teeth will fall out and you’ll have to get false ones!”
“I think you’re exaggerating a little, fahaha! But it is weird. I thought I had the strict mom…”
Kris shakes their head. “No, no, Carol is wayyyy more strict. It’s a miracle she was chill about us being together.”
“I know, it’s so weird. Like, when I was with Susie, she hated her guts, but now with you, she’s completely fine! Almost, happy…” Noelle was perplexed.
“I suppose knowing each other since birth helped. And then our parents are good friends… Whatever. At least Susie’s cool with us dating.”
Noelle smirks. “I suppose she’s kinda like our wing-girl. And you were kinda like our wing- uh, wing-they then we were dating.”
Kris chuckles at the joke. “The one downside of being non-binary. We have to make up words.” Noelle laughs along with them. She looks at Kris’ knife on the counter, and grabs it while Kris is looking for the chocolate milk. She glares at the knife, and then the ground.
“Alright, Noelle, it’s just a dream… worst comes to worst… you’ll just look a bit silly. You haven’t been on a crazy adventure… It’s all… just… a dream.”
She raised the knife, closed her eyes, and plunged the knife into the tiled floor, creating a blinding white pillar along with a loud, electronic-sounding shriek. Kris turned around just in time to see the Dark Fountain begin to form, charging towards Noelle and tackling her out of the way. She looked startled. What she explained to herself as a dream was very much real.
Kris wrapped their arms around her, Noelle staring into their eyes, on the verge of tears, thinking that there was no solution to this. Kris hugged her tighter as the darkness submerged them.
