Work Text:

It was barely dawn when the kitchen light blinked on.

A soft golden glow spread across the counters, catching the slow dance of flour in the air. The house was still half-asleep—except for two culprits standing before the mixing bowl, eyes wide with conspiratorial glee.

Yoongi yawned, rubbing at his eyes with the back of his wrist. His hair was tied back messily, a few black strands falling over his forehead. The collar of his grey sleep shirt was crooked, his broad shoulders hunched as he read the recipe on his phone.

Beside him stood their five-year-old daughter—Min Haru—wearing her tiny apron patterned with pastel hearts. She clutched a wooden spoon like a sword, her cheeks dusted with flour that she didn’t notice. Her eyes sparkled the way Jimin’s did when he was trying not to laugh.

“Appa, it says one cup of sugar,” she whispered, tilting her head. “Is this cup okay?”

Yoongi glanced down. “That’s a mug, baby.” He sighed, suppressing a smile. “We need the small one—the measuring cup. Remember?”

Haru frowned in concentration, scanning the cluttered counter filled with chaos disguised as love: cracked eggshells, a half-opened bag of flour, butter softening too quickly near the stove.

They were trying—really trying—not to make noise. But every time something clattered, they froze and looked toward the hallway, holding their breath like guilty thieves.

From upstairs, the faint sound of the bedroom clock ticked on. Jimin was still asleep, curled up in the thick blankets, his scent warm and faintly sweet in the air—a soft blend of sugar and sleep that always lingered through the house.

Yoongi’s chest warmed just thinking about it. He glanced toward the ceiling, imagining Jimin’s peaceful face in sleep, his lips slightly parted, the faint rise and fall of his breathing. It made the early hour worth it.

“Okay,” Yoongi murmured, lowering his voice again. “We’re making papa’s favorite. Chocolate cake with strawberry filling.”

Haru’s eyes widened. “His birthday cake!”

“Exactly.” Yoongi ruffled her hair gently, smiling. “So we need to make it perfect.”

They didn’t.

Within minutes, flour was on the floor, the counter, and somehow even Milo, their cat, had wandered in for attention. Yoongi tried whisking the batter while Haru carefully poured in milk—too carefully, until her hand slipped and splashed half of it onto Yoongi’s sleeve.

She gasped, eyes huge.

Yoongi blinked down at himself, then looked at her—and snorted.

Haru giggled first. Yoongi followed, quietly, shoulders shaking as he tried to muffle it in his sleeve. The sound of their laughter filled the kitchen, soft and breathy, like bubbles breaking the morning silence.

“Papa’s gonna know,” Haru whispered between giggles.

Yoongi leaned closer, whispering back, “Only if you tell him.”

She shook her head furiously, ponytail bouncing. “Secret mission!”

“Right,” Yoongi grinned. “Operation Birthday Cake. We can’t fail.”

He turned back to the bowl, his movements slow and steady this time, guiding her hands with his own—large, careful, dusted with flour. Together, they mixed the batter, chocolate streaking their knuckles, laughter threading through every motion.

Outside, the first light of sunrise slipped through the window, touching the kitchen with gold. Inside, the smell of cocoa began to bloom, warm and rich.

Upstairs, the bed creaked softly as Jimin stirred.

The first thing that reached him was the smell.

Rich, sweet, unmistakable—chocolate melting into butter, the faint tartness of strawberries waiting their turn. It wound through his sleep, through the haze of dreams, until his lashes fluttered open to a quiet dawn.

Jimin blinked at the ceiling, dazed. The air was warm and thick with scent. Not just chocolate, but the deep, grounding note of his alpha—Yoongi’s scent, steady as a heartbeat, threaded through the sweetness like a whisper.

He frowned, half-awake. Where was he?

The other side of the bed was empty, the sheets still faintly warm. The house was hushed, but not silent. Somewhere beyond the closed door came a muffled sound—soft giggles, a tiny voice hissing “shh!” followed by the unmistakable clang of metal against tile.

Jimin’s eyes narrowed in sleepy confusion. He sat up, the blanket pooling around his waist, hair messy and face still creased from sleep. For a long moment, he just listened. The noises came again—quiet laughter, whispered instructions, a faint meow that sounded deeply offended.

A smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

He didn’t move right away. Instead, he pressed his hand to his chest, feeling the steady thump of his heart as realization bloomed. They’re up to something.

And so early, too—Yoongi, who usually protested against mornings as if they were a personal enemy, was apparently awake and conspiring with their five-year-old. That alone was suspicious.

Jimin swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood, careful not to let the floorboards creak. He wrapped himself in his robe, tied it loosely, and tiptoed toward the door. Every instinct in him wanted to pad down the hall and kiss them both—his alpha with sleep-heavy eyes, his daughter with her bright grin—but curiosity, and the soft ache of tenderness blooming in his chest, stopped him.

He cracked the bedroom door open.

The sight that met him nearly knocked the air from his lungs.

In the kitchen, under the pale gold wash of early morning light, stood the two loves of his life. Yoongi, barefoot, hair tied back, sleeves rolled to his elbows, looked as if he’d wrestled a bakery and lost. Flour clung to his forearms, streaked his jaw, and his shirt had a splash of batter across the chest.

And beside him—tiny Haru, their daughter, proudly holding a wooden spoon twice her size, her cheeks smudged white, her little mouth moving a mile a minute as she whispered instructions.

Between them, the counter looked like a battlefield: open flour bags, cracked eggshells, a suspicious puddle of milk slowly creeping toward the edge.

On the stool near the counter, Milo watched the chaos unfold with all the composure of an emperor overseeing fools. His tail flicked lazily, eyes half-lidded, as if silently judging their life choices.

Jimin clutched the doorframe, biting back a laugh that trembled in his throat. His eyes burned with sudden warmth. He felt it—not just affection, but that deep, fragile ache of belonging.

His alpha, who once claimed he couldn’t boil water without setting off the smoke alarm.

His daughter, who somehow inherited both her father’s stubborn streak and Yoongi’s unholy ability to make a mess look endearing.

And their cat, who was probably reconsidering his contract with this family.

Yoongi leaned down to whisper something, and Haru nodded furiously, stirring with exaggerated focus. She splattered half the counter in the process. Yoongi sighed, laughed under his breath, and gently steadied her hand.

That was when Jimin’s chest squeezed so tightly it almost hurt.

He pressed his sleeve to his eyes, pretending it was just sleep making them wet. The quiet hum of their voices, the soft scrape of metal on glass, the delicate chaos of it all—it was so ordinary, and yet it felt like the purest kind of miracle.

He didn’t want to ruin it. Didn’t want them to know he was there, watching their secret mission unfold.

So he stepped back silently, letting the door close just enough to hide him from sight. Leaning against the wall, he smiled to himself, eyes still bright. He could wait. Let them have their fun. Let them think they were fooling him.

And when they came bursting in with their cake, pretending he hadn’t heard a thing, he’d act surprised. He’d play along.

Because some mornings were too perfect to interrupt.

From the kitchen, a small voice suddenly piped up, “Appa, why is Milo looking so mad?”

Yoongi’s dry, half-laughing reply drifted out, “Because we stole his nap time, princess. And also his dignity.”

Jimin pressed a hand to his mouth to stifle his giggle. His heart felt impossibly full.

It was going to be a good birthday.

Jimin slipped back beneath the covers with the stealth of someone committing a small, happy crime.

The bed was still warm, sheets faintly rumpled, smelling of sleep and Yoongi. He drew the blanket up to his chin, closed his eyes, and tried not to smile too widely. His heart, however, refused to obey—it beat against his ribs like a bird fluttering in delight.

The sounds from the kitchen carried softly through the hall: the oven door closing with a thud, the clinking of utensils, the hurried whisper of a child who didn’t quite understand the concept of whispering.

“Appa, is it ready now?”

“Almost,” Yoongi murmured, his voice low, gentle with patience. “We have to let it cool before the strawberries go on top, remember?”

A dramatic sigh. “But he’s gonna wake up!”

Jimin barely restrained a laugh, burying his face in the pillow.

He could imagine Yoongi’s small, crooked grin as he said, “Then we’ll just have to be faster.”

Footsteps. Quiet chaos. A scrape of something on a plate. Then—utter silence.

He waited. The floorboards in the hallway creaked faintly. The air shifted, scented with warm chocolate and sugar and the faintest hint of burnt edges. Someone tiptoed closer.

Jimin forced his breathing to slow, his body to stay still.

The bedroom door opened with exaggerated care, followed by a tiny whisper, “Shh! Quiet, Appa!” and the sound of something being carefully placed down. The sweetness in the air grew stronger.

And then—soft footsteps padded across the rug, followed by the familiar pat-pat-pat of four furry paws.

Milo entered first, as if leading a royal procession. His tail swayed with regal grace, eyes glowing in the early light. He jumped up onto the bed, sniffed at Jimin’s face, and gave a low, approving purr.

“See?” Haru whispered. “Milo says he’s asleep.”

Yoongi’s laugh was soft. “Yeah? Think so?”

“Uh-huh. His nose isn’t moving.”

Jimin barely managed to keep from snorting. My nose?

The mattress dipped slightly as a small weight climbed onto it. Then another, heavier presence at the edge. He heard the faint clink of a plate being set on the nightstand, followed by a rush of tiny feet scurrying closer.

“Okay, ready?” Yoongi’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Ready!”

“Three... two... one...”

And then—

🎶 “Happy birthday to you...” 🎶

Jimin couldn’t hold it in anymore. His eyes fluttered open to see his little family standing over him, faces glowing with pride.

Yoongi’s hair was still dusted with flour, his expression shy but soft, holding a lopsided chocolate cake on a mismatched plate. Haru stood beside him, beaming, clutching a single candle flickering in the center of their chaotic masterpiece.

Strawberries were unevenly sliced and sinking into the frosting, chocolate smudged the rim of the plate, and a suspicious crack ran down the middle—but it was perfect. Utterly perfect.

“Mornin’,” Yoongi murmured, voice rough with affection. “You weren’t supposed to wake up yet.”

“I tried,” Jimin whispered, voice trembling between laughter and tears. “I really did.”

Haru giggled and climbed onto his lap, almost tipping the blanket. “Happy birthday, Papa! We made your favorite cake! I helped!”

“I can tell,” Jimin laughed, cupping her flour-covered cheeks, pretending not to tear up. “It looks beautiful.”

“Really?” she asked, eyes wide with hope.

“The most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen.” He looked up at Yoongi, their eyes meeting for a quiet second—just long enough for his chest to ache in that soft, familiar way.

Then, without warning, Milo decided to join in. The cat trotted across the blanket, circled twice, and settled right on Jimin’s chest, his tail flicking against Haru’s arm.

“See? Even Milo’s saying happy birthday,” Yoongi said dryly. “In his own... majestic way.”

Milo blinked slowly at Jimin, then purred, his weight a gentle warmth against Jimin’s heart.

Jimin laughed, one hand in Haru’s hair, the other resting on Yoongi’s wrist as he sat beside them. “This is the best morning,” he murmured.

Yoongi leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to his temple. “Only the best for our omega,” he said quietly, his voice almost lost beneath the hum of the candle flame.

Haru gasped. “Appa, make a wish!”

Jimin looked at them both—their daughter’s bright eyes, Yoongi’s sleepy smile, Milo’s imperious stare—and thought he didn’t need to.

Still, he closed his eyes, took a breath, and blew.
