Work Text:
“Then, you pour it slowly so it mixes well, see? We’ll continue with this for a couple of minutes.”
“Okay.”
“What are you guys doing?” came the voice from the door.
“Daddy’s home!” Jack squealed from his place on the chair and jumped down to run towards his father.
“Hello, buddy, are you helping Spencer?” Aaron held his son in his arms, even if he felt a tug on his back.
“Yes! We’re making whipped cream.”
“Oh, and why are you two making whipped cream?”
“It’s a surprise, daddy!”
Spencer got closer to his now husband and kissed him tenderly as he always did when he arrived home. Jack was giggling in the middle, and both men kissed his cheeks loudly, making the boy laugh openly.
“This very helpful monkey should be watching the mixer, right?”
“I forgot!” Jack wiggled in his father’s arms until the man let him down on the floor. He ran back to the chair to see the mixer work.
“How are you feeling today? I’m sorry I didn’t call, I was swamped in a budget meeting and you know how it gets.”
“It’s okay, honey, I understand. I’m feeling better, and Jack was well behaved so we baked a pie and we’re making the whipped cream to have it as a treat before nap time.”
Aaron hugged his husband tightly. He’d missed him all day, but seeing him glow with happiness was his best reward of the day.
“Am I invited to have pie before nap time too?”
“Of course, I timed it perfectly, as usual, so take a seat and I’ll get you a plate.”
“No, no, I’ll do it. You deserve to rest too. Come on.”
Spencer huffed but smiled at his husband and walked to the small kitchen table where there was a pie stand with a clear lid. The Pumpkin pie looked delicious and with a dollop of whipped cream, Aaron knew it would be heavenly. His husband did have a gift when it came to baking.
He went where Jack was busy waiting for the mixer to have the perfect texture; he helped the boy turn it off and taste the cream. They both agreed it tasted perfect. Jack was in charge of bringing the bowl to the table and looking for a spoon to use. Aaron grabbed the plates and the lemonade pitcher from the fridge.
When Jack was comfortably seated on the chair, with a cushion helping him to be taller, and Aaron served lemonade for everyone, Spencer was in charge of slicing the pie.
While Jack and Aaron were enjoying the first bite, enjoying the sweet mix of flavors, Spencer looked at both with love. His little family was the best thing he had. He couldn’t be happier, except in a few months when they would get a new little family member. He rubbed his small bump with both hands.
