Chapter Text
Moon fumbled with the lock of his apartment door. It was Saturday night, and he had just gotten home from a long day at work. Thanks to the Pizzaplex hiring more staff, he had fewer weekends at the daycare, now, but they still called him in sometimes. Part of him wished that Ginger would be scheduled for even one Saturday, just so they could be together, but ultimately he was fine with spending the day away from her if it meant she could rest.
She was waiting for him on the other side of the door, an excited smile on her face. He smiled back, tired but still happy to see her. What had he done to deserve the privilege to come home to her every night?
"Heyyy, babe~," she half-sung.
"Hey," he replied.
They embraced, sharing a kiss.
"How was work?" Ginger asked.
"Work was good, no fights or temper tantrums. The kids were great, too." He chuckled. "How about you?"
"Pretty good. I had a lovely time with the laundry, and I went to the grocery store and got some more vitamins."
"Yay," Moon replied, completely monotone.
"Don't you sass me, boy. You're working with kids, your immune system needs all the help it can get."
"I know, I'm kidding. What's that?" he asked, pointing to a plastic bag on the kitchen table.
"Dinner! I've been wanting to show you this for a long time, but I wanted to wait until we were alone."
Moon raised an eyebrow. "Should I be worried?"
"No, no, it's just… something you might want to try out at home, first." Ginger removed a take-out box from the bag, then opened it with a flourish. "Ta-da!"
The food appeared to be some sort of meat covered in sauce. Whatever it was, it smelled good.
"What's that?"
"Buffalo wings! They're chicken wings with spicy sauce on them, which have absolutely nothing to do with buffalos. These ones are the mild sauce, and these are hot sauce."
"That sounds good."
"Great! You ready to eat, or do you need a minute?"
"I'm ready if you are," Moon replied, heading towards the kitchen. After thoroughly washing and drying his hands, he opened an almost-bare drawer.
"What are you getting?"
"Silverware."
"No, babe, you don't need silverware for wings."
Moon looked between her and the chicken.
"But then… what am I supposed to do with this?"
"Use your hands."
"That sounds… messy…"
"Yep! That is why we're eating takeout instead of going out for dinner."
"Why do you eat them like that?"
"Usually, it's because that's the only way to get all the meat off the bone-"
"There's bones in it, too?!" he asked, incredulous.
"I thought you wouldn't like that, so these are boneless wings, but the classic ones have bones in them. You could eat them with a fork and knife if you wanted to, I'm just used to them being finger food. We're just chilling here at home, you can do whatever you want."
Moon paused, then grabbed a fork, a knife, and two plates before sitting down.
"Which ones are spicy?"
"These ones." Ginger pointed to the wings which were a slightly darker shade of orange. "If you don't like them, we can always make sandwiches or something, and don't worry about wasting food, because I can eat whatever you don't want for lunch tomorrow, ok?"
"Ok."
Moon scooped a modest serving of chicken onto his plate, then tasted a neatly-cut bite. As Ginger said, it was certainly spicy, but he had found that he enjoyed spicy foods. (More importantly, he had built up a much higher spice tolerance than Sun, which he had plenty of fun with.)
"How is it?"
"S'good," he mumbled before taking another bite.
"Yay!" she clapped. "I have succeeded in expanding your palette once again."
"Thank you, Ginger Snaps."
"You're welcome, Moonbeam."
Ginger had no qualms about eating her wings the traditional way, which led to her hands and mouth getting covered in the sauce. Moon stuck to his silverware, and immediately wiped away the few drops of sauce which dared cling to his lips. They also enjoyed some celery and carrot sticks, which were apparently common side dishes for this meal. They finished off most of the chicken, with a few wings left over, which would be a nice snack for later.
After everything was cleaned up, they relaxed with a movie and snuggling (and some faintly hot sauce-flavored kissing, of course).
"Thanks for treating me to dinner, tonight," Moon whispered. "Can we do this again sometime?"
"Sure," Ginger giggled. "Is tomorrow ok?"
"Hmmm… I think that works for me."
Ginger laughed again, this time with a snort, which made both of them laugh harder. Eventually, with full bellies, and fuller hearts, they drifted off to sleep.
