Summary:

When the one person who mattered most to them dies, everyone goes through the five stages of grief; their dead lover taking the stage of acceptance.

Work Text:

Killer ran desperately through the snowy forest, searching frantically for the man he'd come to love.

How could Nightmare let this happen?! This was just supposed to be a scouting mission! How could he let this happen?! He'd had a bad feeling about this mission but didn't want to look like a pussy so he didn't say anything.

What a fool he was...

The cold nipped at his bones, his coat doing little to protect him from the cold as he trudged through the snow, praying that he would find him before it was too late.

Unfortunately for him, luck wasn't on his side today...

- - -

Cross sat slumped in the snow against a thick tree, his soul weak as blood seeped from his wounds, staining the snow around him with every second that passed.

He was a fool for thinking that he could've won that fight. He should've backed down when Killer told him to...instead he decided to play hero and payed the price.

The cold was already freezing his bones and would soon freeze his soul, killing him. But he was determined to stay alive and make it home.

Make it back to Killer...

- - -

Killer perked up at the sound of rustling snow and quickly rushed to where he'd heard the noise, unfortunately all he saw was a squirrel rushing back to it's tree.

"Fuck..." He quietly swore, wondering where Cross could be. He couldn't have gotten that lost already..right?

Killer shook the thought from his mind and began running through the forest again, this time shouting Cross's name every few seconds.

He was getting desperate now. He needed to find them before the cold killed them...

- - -

The wind whistling and his own ragged breathing was all Cross had been able to hear for the longest time...

Until he heard Killer's voice calling for him.

Cross perked up slightly, wincing from the pain, and tried to figure out where he was.

Once he did so, Cross grabbed a nearby rock and threw it at the tree across from him, praying Killer would hear...

Thankfully, he did. The sudden thud of stone on wood alerted Killer and he sprinted toward the noise.

- - -

The sight that greeted him when he reached the place where the noise came from caused his soul to clench and ache.

There was Cross, looking smaller than he'd ever seen, bloody and half-frozen, lying in the snow slumped against a tree.

"Cross!"

Killer rushed over and fell to his knees beside Cross, hands shaking as they hovered over him, unsure of what to do.

"Heya, Kills.." His voice was weak and pained, like talking was too painful of a task.

Killer stared at him in horror, wondering how he could let this happen. As if able to read his thoughts, Cross reached a shaky hand up and gently cupped Killer's cheek.

"It's not your fault, Kills. I did this to myself.."

Killer's eyelights showed, two white rings, as he began to tear up. "Crossy..."

Cross gave him a weak smile, his eyelights flickering slightly as the life slowly slipped away from him.

Killer desperately scooped Cross into his arms and held him close, determined to keep him warm and alive.

"You gotta let me go, kills.." They whispered, holding onto him as tight as his weak body would let him.

"No no no. I can fix this." Killer mumbled, squeezing his eyes shut, not wanting to let his love slip away from him.

Cross pulled away enough to look at Killer's face, purple tears streaming down his cheeks and a weak, shaky smile on his lips.

"I love you, Killer..." Cross's voice trailed off as he began to dust. Killer scrambled to try and hold him closer, hoping that would save him.

It didn't, and soon Cross was gone. All that was left was his jacket which Killer held tighter than anything he'd ever held..
