Destreza: The First Steps

Summary:

A gifted but uncertain young psychic named Elspeth leaves home for Naranja Academy, only to have fate intervene in the form of a mysterious Shiny Gardevoir who entrusts her with a rare Ralts egg. With her newly-hatched partners — a shy Ralts and a spirited Shiny Alolan Vulpix — Elspeth enters the world of battles, friendship, and hidden dangers. As she navigates school rivalries, forming deep bonds through training, she also encounters something stranger: an injured Ultra Beast far from home.

Notes:

This is a work of purely self-indulgence, but with an even hand of practicality and realism. I've tried to make a Pokemon world that's... well, fun, but it's not the grand adventure of say Ash or any of the main characters from the games. (Speaking of. For the record, Maria 'Mar' Calderon is the main character of Scarlet/violet.)

I think this is a decent work, but I know it could be better too. I just... don't think I can take it that step further. This is the- let's call it first book. I hope people find this enjoyable.

Chapter Text

With a sad sigh, I taped up the last box, and looked around my room… it wasn't empty, but most of my things were packed away. My suitcases, all two of them, sat against the wall, and with a sigh, I moved to pull on my shoulder bag.

Only, I made it all of two steps before in a muted flash of light, a Gardevoir appeared in the middle of my room. It was a shiny, blue hair and… it was holding an egg and… something else?

"Voir?" It spoke, voice sounding thoughtful, even as it focused in on me, then nodded. "Gard!"

I- I wanted to scream, to call for help… this had to be a-

I found myself gulping. The Gardevoir was wearing two crude earrings. Pierced into her ears things… from each dangled half of a destroyed poke'ball.

Then I felt the Poke'mon's psychic might brush my mind, and it spoke. Thought to thought. "Peace child, I wish you no harm. Please… calm."

Gulping, I marshalled my own psychic power, and reached back. "W-what d-do you want?"

The feeling of a soft smile crossed to me through this tenuous link, and the Gardevoir spoke again. "I simply wish for you to take this egg and poke'ball. Raise my daughter well, as I know you will. Protect her, and let her protect you."

I also got the sense of- of dark futures for the little Ralts that was in that egg. So many dark futures… but this? This was a chance at something brighter. Flashes and spill over from the far more powerful psychic.

"I-" I gulped again… this was a wild poke'mon, just… appearing in my room. But… "Of course, I will."

"Good." The Gardevoir proclaimed, handing me the egg and a small white and gold poke'ball in the ancient Hisui style. Then it- she… reached up and ruffled my hair. "Be careful, young one. But do not fear the Outsider when you meet it."

And in a flash… she was gone.

"M-mom! M… Mom!" I cried out, trembling.

"What is it, Elspeth?" Mom called as she walked up the stairs, only to freeze when she entered my room, looking at me, holding an egg, "Dear… honey, what happened?"

Taking in a deep breath, I tightened my grip on the egg and replied. "I- a wild Gardevoir just- just teleported into my room. She- she left me with this egg and Poke'ball."

Next thing I knew, I found myself wrapped up in a hug, Mom cooing sweet nothings into my ear. "It's ok… it's all ok… come downstairs… We need to leave for your flight soon… and we have a surprise for you…"

Shaking a bit, still, I headed down stairs, the sound of suitcases moving behind me.

"Honey, what happened?" My Dad's voice came out and- but he wasn't supposed to get back until I was gone. What was-

"I'm not sure. But Elspeth has and Egg… and she said a Wild Gardevoir teleported into her room, to give it to her." Mom replied…

Was that an egg? Sitting on the dining table? It was on a small pillow, with a Poke'ball next to it. A beautiful Premium Ball.

“Huh?” Dad muttered, eyes flicking between me and the egg in my arms. He looked at Mom — something unspoken passed between them. Then he gave me a steady smile. “Well… looks like our little girl’s getting two starters. Come here, let me take a look at that egg and Poke'ball. Make sure everything's properly registered as yours. Come on out, Tama."

Nodding, I walked over, the trembling slowly fading, even as my Rotom phone, Tama, floated out of my pocket and over to Dad — her synthetic jade case glinting.

Plucking Tama out of the air, Dad started poking at her for a few minutes. "Ok, I've just finished your trainer registration, and amended that you have two eggs. You'll have to keep them in their Poke'balls on the flight, unfortunately, but- shoot, look at the time."

Letting go of Tama, Dad hurried for the door, "Come on, we have to get you to the airport on time. Can't have you missing your flight, and first day of school!"

Looking around the small flat, I couldn't help but feel bad for my Aunt… but at the same time. "I hope I'm not a burden?"

The silver bells of laughter from my Aunt rang out, then she replied, "Not at all. I'm just sorry I can't offer you a better place to sleep for the next couple of days. The Dorms don't open until the first day… for whatever stupid reason. Now, feel free to explore the city, but I think you would prefer to take it easy today!"

My aunt was a svelte woman with straight blonde hair, and a radiant smile. "You have my number, so don't be afraid to call me! Now, I have to get to work, make sure to call your parents, and check those eggs~"

And… and my Aunt was gone. Off to… I don't know? What did my Aunt actually do?

With a sigh, I plopped down on the couch, and let my two eggs out. Wondering if coming to Naranja Academy was the right choice? Dad was supportive… and Mom was happy. But… well, who knows. I guess I could have waited another year and gone on a journey. As it was, I was going to go to one of the world's top trainer schools. Did I want to be a trainer when I grew up?"

With a tired sigh, I curled up around the two eggs… and drifted off to sleep.

Of course, I woke some time later to the sounds of cracking and-

"Vul?"

"Ral?"

"Pix!"

"Ralts!"

Hungry. The emotion… sensation really hit me, wafting off of my little Ralts. And off of the little white and pink Vulpix too… wait! White Vulpix?

"Tama! Poke'Dex!"

Its body is perpetually cold to the touch, and it exudes a faint, calming chill. If treated kindly, it will form a deep, unbreakable bond with its trainer — and will fiercely protect them from harm, despite its delicate appearance.

Even while I was reading the Vulpix[Alohan] Entry, I was using my 'phenomenal psychic powers' to lift up a bag of berries and bring it over. Honestly, lifting this much was a struggle. But once the bag was in my hands, I floated out two berries and offered them to my two baby pokemon.

Said Alohan Vulpix, and-

-my Ralts.

"Vul!" "Alts"

And I could feel the hunger coming off of them abating… but also… thin thready trails leading from me to them… Bonds. Or, nascent bonds really. You hear about it from trainers, all the time. But it only clicks when you feel one… just how sacred they are.

"H-hello… I- I'm Elspeth, your trainer… call me Liz?" Shaking my head I couldn't help but frown. Just listen to me… it's not like they could talk- no, they had poke'speech, but… well. "I think…"

Picking up the Ralts, I looked over at Tama, now showing me a side by side of the two pokemon. Scans of these specifically. And this Ralts was female. Um… hmmm… "Well. How about… Medea? Do you like that name?"

"Ralts!" She agreed, nodding, but also radiating her approval and joy. So I set her down and turned to the pink fox.

"And you… I think, Yuki?" I asked, glancing at Tama- and freezing. The Vulpix was male. Male!? "I mean-"

But my little snowball of a Vulpix was yipping happily… and I just named a guy Yuki. I- was I a bad person? "Okke… then Yuki, Medea… do you two want to take a nap? Eat some more? Or… go outside?"

And that's how I found myself outside sitting in one of Mesagoza's green spaces. Watching as Yuki and Medea played in the light now Yuki had caused. Along with some local pokemon.

I was still a little unnerved by wild pokemon, it had only been a day since the wild Gardevior… but if I was going to be a trainer I needed to overcome that.

"Oh my gosh! They're so adorable!" Came an older female voice from behind me, and turning to look, I found a girl just a few years older then me. She had black hair pulled back in a ponytail, but with a streak of green hair in her bangs, and dark tan skin. She was also wearing the schools uniform… and I had to struggle to keep my eyes on her face, and not her modest- I mean. Um… "How long have you had them?"

"Oh… they- um… they just hatched?" I replied, "Um… you're a student here?"

"Oh wow! Then… ah, yeah! I already made Champion rank — but I’m not the Champion yet! Just you watch, I’ll get there!" she proclaimed, then blushed bright. "Ah, I'm Nemona Cruz! Call me Nemo!"

"Oh, ah… I'm Elspeth Conner? Please call me Liz?" I replied, unsure how to deal with someone so energetic. "I start here in a couple of days."

"Fantastic! Oh, but have to trained your- ah, no!" Nemo staggered back, palm on her forehead. "They just hatched! Silly me! Want me to show you a few moves? It’ll be fun! We’ll get them battle-ready in no time!”

"Er…" Actually… "Ok? Um… thank you?"

"No problem!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We ended up training the next day too, then… Well, then everything began.

"Morning! I made pancakes!" My Aunt proclaimed, waking me and my two pokemon. "Let's eat up! Today's a big day!"

With a yawn, I got up, scratching my hair before shambling into the bathroom and taking a shower before getting dressed. Then I looked at myself in the mirror.

I… my eyes shone purple with psychic power, and I was currently floating my brown hair, fanned out to dry better. My red rimmed glasses floated onto my face and I looked down at my uniform… it was… was… eh. Rust red slacks, with a button up short sleeve blouse and tie…

I didn't like it. And Nemona didn't wear this… what were the schools uniform policies? I would need to look into that. Maybe I could wear my own thing? Or… something?

Making my way into the kitchen, I smiled at the heart shaped pancakes. Medea and Yuki already eating their own meals of berries.

"So," My Aunt proclaimed as I took my first bite. "I'm going to fly you out to the Poco Path Lighthouse! It will be good for you to make your way back to the city and then to the Academy!"

I… was… was I ok with that? I… pushing down the doubt and fear, even as I noticed both my pokemon looking at me, I nodded once. "Ok… Medea? Yuki?"

"Pix!" "Ral!" They proclaimed, and it was accompanied by feelings of trust and joy. They wanted to prove themselves? To… to grow?

Nodding again, I got back to eating. "Ok."
