Work Text:
Two empty dessert plates once hosting strawberry sponge cake laid on the nightstand, the warm lamp illuminating the bedroom. Your head propped up against the headboard, eyes drooping with fatigue. Your teeth remained unbrushed, having not finished your tea yet, the mug still surprisingly warm after all this time. Everything was quiet, and for once, not preceding sudden and unfortunate doom. It was comfortable, and safe. Or as safe as you could be for now.
Your hand nestled in Denji’s scalp, the tufts of blonde hair spiking up between your finger tips. He had nice and thick hair, and he was pretty good with maintaining it despite only using a pair of crappy scissors. He was experienced with using anything to solve any problems, since he had literal scraps and even less to work with. Your expressions related at the remembrance of his poverty, that aching crawling back into your heart. You had no idea how he made it through those years of hell and made it to his now late teens.
But Denji was very content with where he currently was, and you were more than happy with it. He was safe, or at least as safe as he could be. He was curled up next to your body, belly full with a sweet dessert and some tea. His body was covered by the quilt on your bed, his head nuzzled onto your chest. His breathing was slow and steady, mouth agape while he snored. You smiled to yourself at the sight. You decided to skip your teeth brushing for tonight, feeling too guilty about moving him off.
You turned off the lamp after chugging down the remainder of your tea. You shifted your head to rest against your pillow, holding Denji close. You kissed his forehead, and whispered a soft goodnight.
“Love you, Den.” You hummed, a smile subconsciously curling on his agape lips.
