Work Text:

Jinx remembered what she needed to buy. Totally.

Lux, her roommate, had sent her out on a grocery run, easy. She started rattling off a list of groceries. (too fast and too long, in Jinx’s opinion).

“Eggs, milk, noodles…” Jinx had, unfortunately for her, tuned out Lux’s voice (though it was a pretty voice) and was tapping a rhythm onto the counter, humming under her breath.

“Pickles, lettuce…Jinx? Jinx, are you even listening?” Jinx snapped her head up, nodding.

“Yep, yep. Always listening. Listening ‘s my middle name!” Lux rolled her eyes affectionately, handing Jinx a list.

“Here. In case you can’t remember.”

Jinx clicked her tongue, grinning at Lux. “You’re the best, Sunshine.”

Jinx left the list on the counter, walking to grab her keys, but when she returned, the list was gone. “I got this. I’m Jinx, short for Jinx. I’m more than capable of a simple grocery run. …At a mall I’ve never been before…”

Jinx shook her head, but looked up when she heard the door to Lux’s room open, and Lux herself walked out, dressed in a simple blouse and long skirt.

“Flashlight! You’re coming with?” Jinx said, hope evident in her voice. Lux nodded, plucking the car keys from Jinx’s outstretched hand.

They both got into the car, Jinx in the back seat so she could stretch her legs out (“Jinx! Not on the seat!”), while Lux drove. Though Jinx would never admit it, Lux was the better driver between them both solely because Lux didn’t run red lights.

They reached the mall in less than an hour, Jinx staring up at the multistory building, jaw slack with awe. Being from a poorer city, she hadn’t really seen megamalls like this before.

Jinx got out of the car, following Lux as she lead them both into a (frankly, the largest supermarket Jinx had ever seen in her short (?) 20 years of life.

Jinx walked around, grinning as something caught her eye. “Hey Luxie! I’m gonna mix red bull and espresso!” She said, holding up the offending can of red bull and a can of Starbucks espresso.

“Jinx, NO!” Lux said, turning, horror dawning on her face.

“Jinx, yes!” Jinx cackled, running towards the cashier, Lux hot at her heels.

Lux finally managed to catch Jinx, holding both cans over Jinx’s head, and Jinx cursed their height difference.

Jinx grumbled to herself as she trailed behind Lux as said blond(?) walked around the supermarket, easily navigating the tall isles, grabbing what she needed from the highest shelf (Jinx mumbled and grumbled even more, again cursing at their height difference).

Jinx and Lux headed to the cashier, Jinx cackling as she quipped (frankly horrible) pick up lines, making Lux laugh.

“Hey, Luxie. Are you a barberque? Cuz you’re smoking hot.” Jinx said, struggling to keep a straight face.

Lux lightly punched Jinx on the shoulder, laughing. “That was terrible, honestly. Does it even work?”

“Well, you’re laughing, aren’t you?” Jinx said smugly.

Lux rolled her eyes, but smiled as Jinx offered to carry the groceries, lowering her voice to sound manly and masculine. “At your service, M’lady.” Lux giggled as Jinx opened the car door for her, before sitting beside Lux instead.

When they reached the house, Lux unpacked the groceries while Jinx took a shower first.

Today was their weekly movie evening, and it was Lux’s turn to choose a movie. Unfortunately for Jinx, Lux would probably choose some sappy romance flick.

Jinx settled back into the couch cushions, and an hour later, she was fast asleep, drooling on Lux’s shoulder. Lux was engrossed in her show, not noticing Jinx until the credits started rolling.

Lux jolted, causing Jinx to stir. Lux winced, gently guiding Jinx to lay down in her lap instead, so as not to wake the shorter girl.

When Jinx finally woke, it was late at night and Lux was sprawled out on the couch, Jinx still somewhat in her lap. Jinx fidgeted, wanting to get up, but not wanting to wake Lux up, and finally fell back asleep.

In the morning, Lux woke up with an aching back from lying on the couch in the wrong position, and Jinx sat up too, back cracking loudly.

Jinx slowly stood, stretching and yawning, causing her shirt to lift slightly, exposing lean muscle, causing Lux to flush deeply. Jinx looked questioningly at Lux but didn’t say anything.

Jinx walked to their kitchen to prepare breakfast, while Lux sat upright, cheeks still red. Lux eventually got up, smelling scrambled eggs and toast.

Here’s the thing. Jinx had been wanting to ask Lux out for some time now, but never had the opportunity. Whenever she tried, either Lux tried finishing her sentence for her, or Lux had something else to do, OR Lux asked her to get groceries, hence, y’know.

But this time, Jinx was sure. Her plan was fool-proof. She would just straight (ha!) up ask Lux, if she wanted to have dinner sometime. Heck, Jinx didn’t even know if Lux was gay or not. Anyway…

Lux was in the kitchen, finishing up her eggs when Jinx walked in.

“Hey, Blondie. I have a…hypothetical question. What if…you had a roommate. And…what if that roommate was…y’know, gay. And what if…said roommate had a…teeny…tiny crush on you?” Jinx said, sounding uncharacteristically unsure of herself.

Lux looked up with a ‘really?’ expression, before turning to point at the large pride flag hanging on their living room wall, with a deadpan expression on her face.

“Jinx. Firstly, if I were homophobic, which I’m not, by the way, I would not have offered to be your roommate. With all due respect, look at yourself. And secondly, are you asking me out on a date, or just so that I can pay for dinner at Chick-Fil-A again?”

Jinx gave Lux a sheepish expression. “A…date? Is that a yes?”

Lux crossed her arms, giving Jinx a mock annoyed expression. “I don’t know, you tell me.”

Jinx grinned with excitement. “All right. Chick-Fil-A! Today, five’o’clock?”

Lux stared for a moment, before shaking her head affectionately. “The things I do for you. Yes, it’s a date. And you better not be late as well, missy.” Lux said, booping Jinx on her nose lightly.

At dinner time, Jinx was seated at a table near the window, anxiously tapping her foot, when Lux appeared. She was wearing a simple skirt and a loose shirt…that looked familar…

“Flashlight, is that my shirt?”

Lux grinned but didn’t answer, the grin causing Jinx’s heart to flutter. Was this…feelings? Gross. She wanted Lux to do it more.

They both sat at the same side of the table, and throughout the dinner, kept flirting with each other, even moving closer to each other, Jinx’s leg nudging Lux’s. They took a bag to go (of dino shaped chicken nuggies, what else would Jinx eat?)

This time, they took Jinx’s beat up pick-up truck (Vander’s, she shared it with Vi) and Lux sat shotgun, idly playing with Jinx’s long braids as Jinx vibed to the music from the radio. At a redlight, Jinx stopped to just stare at Lux, the moonlight reflecting off Lux’s beautiful (in Jinx’s opinion, if you disagree she will shoot you/hj) features.

Jinx really, really wanted to be Lux’s girlfriend.

Jinx parked the car, and both of them walked back up to their house. Jinx stopped Lux before she could enter, mumbling to herself (curse her traitorous heart for beating this fast).

“Lux…I really liked today. The free chicken nuggies were fantastic. But…that isn’t the best thing. You-…I-…can… Canyoubemygirlfriend?” Jinx stammered out the last word, and Lux pretened she couldn’t hear.

“What was that?” Lux said with a shit-eating grin.

Jinx inhaled deeply. “Do. You wanna…maybe be my girlfriend?”

Lux smiled wide, nodding. “Of course, I wouldn’t want anything more.”
