Chapter Text
It had to be the middle of the night. The sky was black outside the open door, the moon high and the stars shining. So why was Genya awake? He could have sworn something happened, something had stirred his senses—
There. That tightness on his arm, squeezing ever so slightly. A pressure that wasn’t there before. He turned, subtly, moving slowly just in case it was…Tanjiro?
When had he gotten so close?! Why had he gotten so close!? He was still fast asleep, but he had shifted his blankets closer, right next to Genya’s, even though they started a solid two paces away. His friends—Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Murata—were still on the opposite side, their blankets in the exact positions they’d been set originally. So why did Tanjiro move closer? And why was he holding onto Genya?!
He half thought about pulling away, tugging his arm free and moving his blankets. He almost started to…but stopped. Instead, despite the growing heat in his face, he relaxed again. He didn’t want to disturb Tanjiro after all. He looked so peaceful, sleeping silently with Genya’s one arm wrapped in his two. His mouth was open slightly, exaggerating each of his exhales. It was cute—though, obviously, just in a normal, friendly way, because that was the only way Genya felt for him. Totally.
His one-hundred-percent-platonic-feelings didn’t stop him from blushing more as he turned onto his side though, facing his body towards Tanjiro’s and slowly, hesitantly, draping his other arm over him. Just for Tanjiro’s benefit, of course, in case he needed some extra comfort. He shifted slightly at the new contact and Genya froze, terrified—but then he just sighed deeply and settled closer, hugging Genya like he was a childhood pillow.
His body was warm under the blankets and Genya’s second arm, now completely laid over him. It wasn’t quite warm enough to be uncomfortable, rather just enough that his eyelids began to droop again. He felt like a fire on a cold night: a familiar, reassuring presence that soothed even the deepest of aches. Maybe that was why his friends seem to cling to him a lot. It felt nice. He felt nice.
Genya didn’t have much time to dwell on the sensation, though. Combined with the already lulling atmosphere of chirping crickets and the far off waterfall, Tanjiro’s warmth was the final piece to make him relax, and within moments he was slipping off to sleep again, content.
