Work Text:

Robby is siting on the couch drinking coffee and reading a book, while music plays in the background. He has off today, so he is going to enjoy a nice, slow morning. Jack is on tonight, but decided to run some errands before going in. Robby tried to get him to sleep some more, while he ran the errands, but Jack was too wound up to get any actual sleep, he’s struggling a little more with nightmares lately, he felt getting out of the house would do him some good, so Robby didn’t push. Just as Robby finished his chapter, his phone chimed from next to him. He didn’t think anyone at the hospital would be texting this early, but who knows

ROBBY + ELLIE

Ellie 🐞: Hey abba! Quick question, is dad downstairs with you?

Robby 🤠: No, he ran to the store to get some groceries for the week

Ellie 🐞: Cool, could we maybe talk?

Robby 🤠: Yeah, we can always talk, pumpkin. Do you want to come down here or is this more of an upstairs, in my room conversation?

Ellie 🐞: More of an upstairs talk

Robby 🤠: Alright, I’ll be up in 5, meet me in my room

Robby stood from the couch, putting his empty mug in the sink and started to head upstairs. He took his time walking, he is not one for super deep conversations, and the fact that Ellie doesn’t want to wait for Jack to talk is not a great sign. He can’t even begin to imagine what Ellie wants to talk about.

———————————————————————

Robby slowing enters his room to see Ellie pacing.

“Hey, what’s up?” Robby says trying to stop Ellie from moving around the room

“Uhmmm, I don’t know how to say this”

“Alright, well, let’s sit down on the bed, pumpkin. The pacing isn’t good for your blood pressure or mine”

“Okay” Ellie says with a deep sigh before sitting down on the bed next to Robby

Robby grabs Ellie’s hands and says “What’s going on kiddo?”

“Please don’t be mad”

“Okay, well now you’re scaring me a little”

“No, no. Uhmm I just don’t know how to ask this”

“Alright, well let’s start with some deep breathes and then go from there”

Ellie does the box breathing technique that Jack has taught her, before looking at the ground and quickly saying. “I want to go on the pill”

“Wow, okay” Robby says a little shocked

“Is that a no?”

“Absolutely not, I want you to be safe, it just caught me a little off guard. Uhmm let me talk to your dad and then we will go from there”

“NO, please don’t tell him. He’s just going to get all weird about it and will probably say no.”

“No, he won’t. He’ll be shocked like I was, but he’ll come around to the idea. I have to tell him”

“No abba, please, he can’t know yet. You know what, just forget it.” Ellie says standing up and attempting to leave

“Hey, no, we need to talk about this” Robby says grabbing Ellie by her wrist and pulling her back down to sitting on the bed

“How about this, I will get you on the pill and I will not tell your dad yet, but you have to promise to talk to him soon. Like in the next week or so”

“Deal” Ellie says hugging Robby

“Well, since you haven’t been active yet, it’ll be easy, no tests are required, I will bring you in and have one of the nurses prescribe you it, since it would be unethical for me to do it”

“Hmm about that…”

“Ellizabeth, what are you not telling me?”

“Again, please don’t tell dad, but I may be asking about the pill because I may or may not have…..please don’t make me say it”

“Fine, answer yes or no. Did you sleep with someone?”

“Yes”

“AHHH, honestly, I didn’t want to know the answer”

“Abba it was his first time too, so it lasted like a minute.”

“Please stop talking. I don’t want to think about my baby girl doing that. Well, here’s the new plan: We go to the Pitt, we have Dana run some tests to make sure everything is okay, and then have her prescribe the pill. You will also need to tell your dad about this.”

“Do I have to?”

“Yes”

“Ugh fine….”

“I’M HOME, CAN I GET HELP PUTTING THE GROCERIES AWAY? WHERE IS EVERYONE?” Jack yells as he comes through the garage door into the house

“UP IN OUR ROOM, BE DOWN IN A MINUTE”

“Alright, you will come to the Pitt tomorrow while I am on shift and we will get this figured out. Your dad will be here at home getting ready for his shift, so I will just say you wanted to come visit or something if he asks. You need to tell him sooner rather than later because I am not sure how long until I let it spill or he finds out from someone at work”

‘Alright, thanks abba” Ellie says hugging Robby and heading out of the room

———————————————————————

“Hey abba” Ellie says walking into the ED

“Hi pumpkin. How was school?” Robby says pulling her in for a side hug

“Good. I got a 95 on my math test”

“That’s my girl”

“Ellie, what are you doing here?” Dana asks as she heads towards the hub where the two are standing and talking. She just finished up with the patient in Central 2 who needed some blood taken.

“Uhmm, here for a visit”

“Interesting, why are you really here? I know you’re leaving something out, you have the same tell as your abba right here?”

“Mmm”

“Are you busy Dana?” Robby says, trying to stop Ellie’s embarrassment

“No, why, what’s up Cap?”

“Can you meet me in North 5, I need a favor?”

“Of course, let me just start the IV for the patient in Central 8 and then I’ll be over”

“Thanks”

Dana starts the IV and then heads over to North 5 to meet Robby and she assumes Ellie. She opens the curtain to see Ellie sitting on the bed and Robby standing next to it with a slightly stressed look on his face

“What’s wrong kid?”

“Uhmm, I need you to prescribe me the pill”

“Like birth control?” Dana says a little shocked

“Yes”

“Uhmm okay, well that should be easy enough. Let me just put the orders in”

“Dana, I also need you to do an STI/STD test and a pregnancy test on Ellie”

“Abba, what?? It was one time”

“I know, but let’s just be safe”

“Yeah, yeah, of course. Well, I will take some blood and urine and get those tests put in”

“Thanks, Dana. I really appreciate it!”

“Yeah, no problem! How’s Abbot doing with this information?”

“He doesn’t know” Robby says quietly and with some hesitation in his voice. He knows that Dana will frown upon his choice to keep Jack in the dark

“MICHAEL ROBINAVITCH, your husband doesn’t know that Ellie is about to go on the pill or that she presumably is sexually active” Ellie’s face is progressively getting redder and redder through this whole conversation

“No and we are going to keep it that way”

“Robby”

“It wasn’t him who decided that, I did Aunt Dana. I knew he would be weird about it, so I asked abba not to tell him yet. I have a week to tell him myself before abba tells him. Please don’t tell him”

“Not my place kiddo, but word of advice, tell him soon because the longer you wait, the more upset he will be”

“Thanks Aunt Dana”

“Well, I will leave you two to it, I just got paged to South 1. Say bye before you head home Ellie” Robby says placing a kiss to her forehead

“Of course”

——————————————————————————

Robby has treated 3 more patients before finally getting to take a seat at the hub to work on his notes.

“Alright, abba, I’m heading home”

“Sounds good pumpkin” Robby says hugging Ellie

“Thanks again, Aunt Dana” Ellie says before turning to hug the nurse

“Of course kid”

Dana watches Ellie completely exit the building before turning to Robby and saying “He’s going to kill you when he finds out”

“I know, but it was nice being the “fun” parent for once, the one who she felt she could come to”

“Well, enjoy it while it lasts because your days might be numbered when he finds out”

“Don’t I know it”

The rest of the shift goes well, nothing really eventful happens. Jack comes to his shift and gets sign off from Robby

“See you in the morning, Mike”

“Yep” Robby says kissing the man before heading home for the night

“Bye, soldier”

“Bye Dana, I’ll see you in the morning too”

Robby and Dana both walk out together

“Well, I don’t think she told him yet”

“No, it doesn’t seem like it. See you in the morning” Robby quips back

“Bye, Cap”

———————————————————————

Robby is heading into PTMC for his shift, not really sure what mood Jack will be in. Jack didn’t text a lot last night, which either means the Pitt was slammed, he’s mad at Robby, or a little bit of both

“Hey Cap, wait for me” Dana says jogging over to Robby

“Good morning”

“Morning”

The two head in, putting their bags in the lounge before heading out into the ED to get sign-off

“Good morning, Jack. Busy night?”

“Yeah. Where’s Dana, I have a question for her?” Jack says with a little edge in his voice

“Uhmm, last I saw she was talking to Bridget, she should be coming over in a minute. What do you need to ask her?” Robby didn’t like where this conversation was going

“Ellis said that she saw her with Ellie yesterday. I just wanted to ask why. Did you see Ellie during the day, it would have been after school?”

“Hmm…” before Robby could answer Dana came walking up

“Good morning, soldier”

“Hey Slugger, quick question did Ellie come to see you yesterday?”

“Yeah” Dana said, controlling her voice and facial expressions, but giving Robby a slight glare

“Why? Was she sick or something?”

“You have to ask her. Patient confidentiality”

“Don’t pull that crap with me. If you won’t tell me, then I’ll just look at her chart”

“Jack, you can’t. You aren’t her doctor, so your not allowed”

“The hell I’m not, let’s see here” Jack says as he scrolls through his tablet looking for Ellie’s chart

“Jack, how ‘bout we take this conversation into the break room, where we can hear each other better” Robby says hoping to diffuse this situation a little

“Hmmmm….YOU GAVE MY DAUGHTER BIRTH CONTROL????” Jack screams looking at Dana

“Jack, break room, now” Robby says trying to pull him in that direction

“NO. YOU KNEW ABOUT THIS DIDN’T YOU” Jack says turning to yell at Robby

“Yes..but let me explain”

“No, there’s no explanation necessary. I’m cancelling the prescription”

“Jack, you can’t do that”

“Why not! She’s a child, she doesn’t need it”

“Actually….she does” Robby says hesitating

“Who says?”

“I do. Come on, let’s go somewhere more private. Dana cover for me for a few please”

“Of course”

“Dana, we aren’t done talking” Jack says as Robby is practically dragging him to the elevator

———————————————————————

When they get to the roof and are through the doors, Jack spins around and says with a grit in his voice “start talking Michael”

“Okay, uhmmm. Ellie came to talk to me two days ago when you were at the grocery store asking about going on the pill. I thought it was just her being safe, but she had already slept with someone”

“Who, I’m going to kill him”

“Jack, stop. It was bound to happen eventually”

“Yeah, not for a long, long time. I wanted to be dead before it happened”

“Same”

“Why didn’t you tell me? We’re married, she’s my kid too you know”

“I know. Ellie asked me not to. She told me she would tell you soon. If she didn’t tell you by the end of the week then I was going to tell you”

“Where does Dana come in?”

“Well, I couldn’t prescribe it myself, and I knew Dana would be discrete, plus she is like the closest thing to a mom the kids have. She’s practically our sibling, so I knew we could trust her and that Ellie would trust her with running the necessary tests and everything. Don’t be mad at her, she knew it wasn’t a good idea not to tell you, but Ellie made her promise”

“Fine, I will apologize to Dana. I am still mad at you and now I need to go home and talk to our daughter”

“I understand why you’re mad at me. Go easy on Ellie, okay? Don’t freak out like she is expecting you too”

“No promises. Now go save some lives”

———————————————————

The two returned to the ED and finished sign off

“Sorry for yelling at you Dana”

“No worries Abbot, it’s your kid, I understand. I would have been the same way”

“Thanks. Have a good shift you two!” Jack says to Dana and Robby before leaving

————————————————————

Jack walks into his house to find Ellie sitting on the couch watching TV

“Hey El”

“Hey dad”

“Uhmm, can you pause the TV, I think we need to talk”

“Sure, what about?”

“I think you know”

“Ugh, abba told you, didn’t he?”

“No, one of the night shift doctors did. Why did you not tell me?”

“I knew you would freak out”

“YEAH, 100%”

“Just like how your freaking out now”

“I’m not, I’m just processing” Jack says taking some deep breathes

“Alright, well, good talk”

“NO, we aren’t done. We are going to discuss the importance of using a condom, and all of the horrible things that can happen if you don’t”

“Seriously”

“Yeah, either you let me doctor my way through this or I will be full on freakout”

“Doctor Abbot it is”

Robby’s phone dinged while he was making his 5th coffee of the day

ROBBY + ELLIE

Ellie 🐞: just talked to dad about the whole pill thing

Robby 🤠: and?

Ellie 🐞: he freaked out as expected. I also just got an hour long lecture on the different STDs and STIs that are out there and what they can do if left untreated. He also made me watch a video of a lady giving birth to show that I’ not ready for that yet

Robby 🤠: geez, sorry, but that sounds like him

Ellie 🐞: yep, another life lessons with Dr. Abbot session, but I brought it upon myself, so…..I guess I can’t be to mad

Robby 🤠: well, proud of you for telling him even though he knew already

*Ellie loved a message*

JACK + ROBBY

Robby ⚓️ : Proud of you for not freaking out

Jack 🐝 : who says I’m not?

Robby ⚓️ :  well you didn’t completely lose your mind because Ellie texted

Jack 🐝:  it’s still going to take some time to wrap my head around the fact that she is growing up, but I’ll get there

Robby ⚓️ : well said, Dr. Abbot, is that how you ended your life lessons session?

Jack 🐝: ass. Go back to saving lives

Robby ⚓️ : see you at handoff
