Trektober Day 17: Meeting the Family

Summary:

Spock meets Jocelyn and Joanna and can't help but notice that Jocelyn is very different from him. What if he isn't Leonard's type?

Work Text:

Jocelyn was a short stout woman with a warm smile. Spock most definitely was not.

During the 1.72 hours they'd spent sitting at a café together, Spock had catalogued every difference between them and there was way more than he had expected. He had logically assumed that they would share certain characteristics, given that one of them was Leonard's ex and one his current partner, but it seemed that wasn't the case.

Spock continued to analyse their differences as they left the café to go on a walk. He wasn't even sure why he did it, perhaps he simply wanted to find logic in the situation. At some point, Leonard and Joanna picked up speed while Spock and Jocelyn continued to walk behind them at a leisurely pace.

- Look at how gosh darn happy they look, they're grinning so wide! - Jocelyn remarked with a smile on her face.

Spock had to agree. Leonard was excitedly conversing with Joanna, it seemed he hadn't even noticed that they'd left the two of them behind.

Suddenly, Jocelyn stopped walking and turned to him, so he did the same.

- It's not just because of Jo, I can tell Len's generally happier since you got together. I'm really glad he found you, you're perfect for him. -

- Perfect? - He knew she didn't mean it literally, but it still seemed like a gross exaggeration.

- You're exactly his type! When we got married, even though I didn't want to, I did my best to play the part of a docile and obedient wife, but turns out he didn't want that either. He needs someone who can challenge him — someone like you. -

Spock knew he meant a lot to Leonard, but this was somewhat surprising to hear. The phrase "exactly his type" repeated in Spock's head until the end of the day. At some point, he realised that for some reason he didn't feel the need to compare himself to Jocelyn anymore.
