A Night Off

Summary:

“You’re welcome,” Jack smiles back. “Make sure to eat before you go. I want to make sure you’re fueled enough to get through the day. After all I need you to have enough energy for tonight,” Jack winks.

“What’s happening tonight,” Dennis mumbles as he shuffles into the kitchen. Black scrub bottoms on with a baby blue t-shirt, which looks to be a size to small. He stretches and yawns revealing a sliver of pale skin.

Robby chokes on his coffee, “Well pet, if you’re not careful we’ll be staying home tonight.”

Work Text:

It was Friday, Jack’s day off from work. He’s woken up early this morning to make sure that Dennis and Robby have more than just coffee before heading into their 12-hour emergency department shifts. While Robby typically cooks for the three of them on their shared days off it’s either Jack or Dennis that makes sure they eat on the days they work. Jack because he always wakes up early and wants his two men to start the day with full stomachs and Dennis because he’d spent to many days in med school skipping breakfast and now that he doesn’t have to go hungry he won’t. Both men have made it their mission to make sure that Robby eats more than just coffee and energy bars through the day, and breakfast is the only meal they can always control.

“Thanks for the coffee darling,” Robby kisses Jack on the temple as he picks up the steaming mug from the counter. He’s dressed in his scrubs and navy PTMC hoodie to keep away the early morning chill. His backpack is sitting next to the door ready to go.

Jack laughs, “We’re going out. It’s Friday, so date night. Hope you’re both excited for bowling.”

“You know,” Dennis hums and he begins to butter a slice of toast, “Spending my evening handling balls sounds like a good way to unwind.” This time it’s Jack who chokes on his orange juice. Dennis grins smugly around his toast and turns to pour himself a coffee.

Jack makes sure that both men finish eating before ushering them out the door to work. He’ll go grocery shopping and then spend most of the rest of his day reading new medical case studies.

Robby and Dennis head out to the parking garage of their apartment complex. Dennis throws his backpack into the back of Robby’s blue Subaru Outback before climbing into the passenger seat. “Want to choose the music this morning pet?” Robby asks him as they buckle in.

“Sure,” Dennis connects his phone in and moments later A House in Nebraska by  Ethel Cain begins to play through the speakers.

Their shift is almost over when Dennis gets a text from Jack in their shared group chat.

Jack: Don’t forget that we have plans tonight. Denny if you have to drag Mikey out of there you do that okay?

Dennis: yessir o7

Jack: I have no idea what o7 means.

Dennis: lamo old man, it’s like a person saluting

Mikey: Why am I the one that needs dragged out of here

Mikey: Denny is always the one who can’t stop himself from getting distracted, not me

Dennis: it’s called ✧ADHD✧

Mikey: I’m pretty sure we’ve all got that

Mikey: Otherwise, we would be shit at managing the chaos in the ER

Jack: Just get out of there on time. We have plans tonight.

Dennis: ahh yes, balls

Mikey: stfu, I’m trying to work here pet and you’re distracting me

Jack: It’s called bowling sweetheart.

Dennis grins at his phone before sliding it back into his pocket. He knows that he’s being a brat, but there’s only about 45 minutes left of their shift and Dennis can’t wait to spend the evening with his boyfriends. Dennis only has a bit of charting left before handing his patients off to the night shift. Across the workstation area Dennis can see Robby smiling down at his phone, reading glasses perched at the bottom of his nose about to fall off. Robby looks up and meets Dennis’s eyes, Dennis winks and Robby flushes before turning abruptly away towards the north corridor of the ER. The three of them have been together for a little over two and a half years now and Dennis is still thrilled every time he can make one of them flustered.

Dennis is grabbing his bag from his locker when he feels Robby behind him. “Ready to go?” Robby asks.

“Yup,” Dennis closes his locker and turns to smile up at him.

They walk out to Robby’s car parked in his coveted attending spot in the garage. As Dennis starts to buckle himself in, Robby’s hand on his thigh stops Dennis. “You were distracting me on purpose today pet,” Robby says as he leans in to kiss Dennis. “That shirt makes you look like a snack.”

Dennis nips at Robby’s lower lip, “Well, I’d let you gobble me up, but Jackie want’s us home on time to go out.” Dennis pulls back smugly, “We better not keep him waiting. He seems really excited to play with balls tonight”

Robby groans and faces forward to start their 15-minute drive home, “You’re a brat.”

“Mhh, but I’m your brat so you love me.”

“Yes, I do love you pet.”

The rest of the ride home is in silence, but there’s an electricity in the air. Dennis knows he’s playing with Robby, and he can’t find it in himself to care. Dennis gets to their door first and slips his key in to unlock it. Throwing the door open he can see Jack sitting on the couch dressed to go out in dark wash jeans and a green button down, sleeves rolled up to the elbows and the top two buttons undone. Jack’s holding his tablet most likely reading new case studies while he waits. Robby comes in behind Dennis closing the door quickly and dropping his bag next to their shoe rack.

“How was your shift?” Jack asks looking up. Ignoring the question Robby back’s Dennis up against the wall across from the door and boxes him in. He leans in and roughly kisses Dennis shoving his hands up the younger man’s shirt.

“While I do love the show we have lane reservations Mikey,” Jack stands and pulls Robby away from Dennis by the back of his hoodie. Robby whines but turns to kiss Jack quickly.

“Sorry Jackie, but our pet has been teasing me all day with that shirt.”

Dennis grins at them from where he’s still backed up against the wall. “I swear it wasn’t on purpose, but maybe I should wear it more often.”

Jack sighs, “You two, go get changed out of your scrubs. If you’re not back here and ready to go in ten minutes you’ll be in trouble, and not the fun kind.” Dennis whines and both men scramble towards the bedroom in a rush to get changed.

Nine minutes later they’re ready to go. Robby has changed out his scrubs and hoodie for jeans and a faded band t-shirt, brown bomber jacket thrown over his shoulder. Robby has also combed his beard, laying flat the hair that he’d been running his fingers through all day. Dennis is now in black joggers, and a red cable knit sweater. The hair on the back of his head pressed flat from when Robby had him pressed up against the wall. “Come here and let me fix your hair sweetheart,” Jack reaches a hand out towards Dennis. The younger man takes a step forward and turns slightly so Jack can re-fluff Dennis’s hair. “There you go, all set.”

Jack leads the others out into the hallway and towards the car. Robby drives again, but this time Dennis slides into the back seat and leaves the front for Jack.

When they get to the bowling alley Jack finds them a lane while Robby and Dennis grab shoes. Jack chooses the second to last lane on the far side of the building. It’s quieter with only a group of teenagers on one side with the other side empty. All three change into their bowling shoes and Robby starts to put their names into the computer: Michael, Denny, and Jack. “I’m going first if that’s okay,” he says to the other.

“That’s fine with me,” Jack says from his spot on the couch.

Robby grabs a blue bowling ball as the pins set, Dennis watches him get into the correct stance and then rolls the ball down the lane. The screen flashes ‘Hit’. Robby rolls his second ball and this time ‘Spare’. “You’re turn Denny,” Robby backs away from the lane to sit on the other side of Jack.

Dennis stands and makes his way to the ball rack. “Um, I don’t actually know how this works,” Dennis flushes slightly embarrassed.

“Oh,” Jack lets out a laugh. “Why didn’t you mention that you’ve never been bowling?”

Dennis is fully blushing now, “You just seemed so excited to bring me, and I didn’t want to ruin that.”

“Sweetheart, we love sharing our hobbies with you. Anyways this will be fun, Mikey can teach you how to bowl, after all he used to be one of the best bowlers in Pittsburg,” Jack brags.

Now it’s Robby’s turn to flush, “Just because I taught you how to bowl doesn’t mean I’m one of the best.”

Dennis turns to Robby with his infamous puppy dog eyes and a pout, “Will you please teach me Mikey?”

Robby stands back up to join Dennis at the line, “Okay, you’re going to want to chose a small ball. Probably a size 10.” He hands Dennis a yellow ball before putting his hands on Dennis’s hips and positioning him correctly in front of the lane. A girl in the lane next to them goes to release her ball, “Okay, it’s common courtesy to not release a ball at the same time as the person next to you, so wait until she’s done and then throw it under arm aiming  towards the middle of the pins.”

Dennis pulls back his arm and them swings it forward releasing the ball as he goes. “I hit three pins!” He says in awe.

“Good job darling. You get one more ball to throw,” Jack points out.

The evening continues with the three of them taking turns, Robby, Dennis, and Jack as they make it through all ten frames. Dennis gets a hang of it after a few frames and begins teasing the other two men whenever they only hit a few pins, even though he is still doing significantly worse than them. After Jack bowls his last ball the computer screen takes a moment to calculate final scores. ‘Winner Michael 248!’ flashes at the top of the screen with digital confetti. After a moment, ‘Second Place Jack 203’ and ‘Third Place Denny 112’ appear beneath Robby’s win.

Jack bumps Dennis’s shoulder as they change back into their shoes, “That was great for your first time. Did you have fun?”

“Thanks, and yeah, it was really fun. We should come again some time.” Dennis grins at the other two, “I always enjoy playing with balls when you’re both around.”

Robby smacks Dennis lightly on the back of the head, “You just can’t help yourself can you?”

“Nope,” Dennis pops the p as he stands. “Lets get you two home. It’s past Jackie’s bedtime.”

After returning their rental shoes they head back out to the car. Robby unlocks the doors with the clicker once they’re close and Dennis heads around the other side to get into the back seat. Before Dennis can even pull the handle he feels hands on his hips, Jack quickly turns him and presses Dennis up against the car door, Robby crowding up on Dennis’s right side. Jack captures Dennis in a heated kiss as his hands begin to wander. Jack pulls away after a moment to catch his breath and Robby grabs Dennis’s chin, tilting the shorter man’s head up and towards Robby’s own kissing Dennis.

“You’re a tease sweetheart,” Jack murmurs along Dennis’s jaw. “No wonder Mikey didn’t want to go out tonight.”

“Guess, we’re not going out for ice cream then?” Dennis teases.

“No way pet, we’re taking you home right now,” Robby pulls away and opens Dennis’s door. He waits for Dennis to climb in before closing it and kisses Jack quickly before they both get into their respective front seats.

The drive home is quiet, all three men trying to keep their composure. They make it up to the apartment where Jack unlocks the door. Once in, Robby almost perfectly repeats the scene from earlier in the day pushing Dennis back up against the wall. Robby kisses Dennis deeply, hands running up and down Dennis’s torso while Dennis clutches at Robby’s face. Jack crowds in behind Robby this time with his hands on Robby’s hips, “What do you say Denny, do you think we should give Mikey a good time tonight? After all he’s been so good and holding back all evening.”

Dennis breaks the kiss, hands still on Robby’s face, “Yes sir, I think daddy deserves a good time. He was so good all day.”

Jack reaches around Robby to grab Dennis by the back of the head and pulls him in for a kiss, “Well then baby, let’s get daddy into the bedroom where we can all get comfy.” Robby moans and Jack pulls away grabbing both Robby and Dennis’s hands leading them towards the bedroom.
