Chapter 1: write me letters,

Chapter Text

"your friend, naoya"

naoya crumpled up the paper he was writing, throwing it into the paper-filled can besides his desk. none of it sounded right-- he always struggled with writing his feelings down, but this has to be perfect.

he ripped another piece of notebook paper from his half-empty journal, cringing at the sound of the tear. he started it off.

"dear kazami,"

no-- scratch that, too formal. they're friends.

"dear tomohiko,
there's been something i've been meaning to tell you for awhile now."

great, straight to the point. might as well rip the bandaid off.

"i like you."

nope. what is he, a teenage girl writing to her crush?

actually, its close enough. whatever, keep it.

"as in, i like you more than a friend. i hope that doesn't make things weird between us. i really do like you, and if you dont like me the same way back its totally fine! we can still be friends if you want. i just wanted to make sure i told you eventually. cause, you know im not the best at keeping secrets and i don't wanna accidentally let it slip, haha!"

how is he still awkward through a letter?

"anyways, please tell me how you feel about this. i know you might try and pretend i never gave you this, but i just want to know your response. please dont freak out!!!!"

this is his best draft so far, and he's running out of paper to spare. he has to make this good.

"yours truly, naoya"

god, thats so corny-- no matter, its there and its staying. he quickly folds the letter, hiding his confession behind a thin curtain of lined paper. he would find an envelope, but then his mom would ask what it was for, and he'd rather die than tell her. so, plain paper it is.

he tucks it into his backpack, praying that he might forgot of it's existence tomorrow. but he's thought it through, and there's no backing out. he even set a reminder on his phone for tomorrow.

his plan? give it to tomohiko while they're walking home together. that way, he'll have the whole night to think about naoya's letter.

that also means naoya has a whole night of waiting for a response. great.

he dreads the waiting, already feeling unease settle in the pit of his stomach. he was never one to be patient, especially when it was something he really cared about. and this is probably one of the most important things he's done.

but he knows tomohiko. he knows that he won't throw away over ten years of friendship because one of them is utterly smitten for the other, right? maybe it'll be a little awkward, but they've had bumps in the road before. it'll all be okay.

everything will be okay.

that's what naoya tried to tell himself as he laid down and tucked himself into bed. tomorrow, everything will be okay.

he did his best to ignore the growing pit in his stomach, uncertainty and unease crawling their way into his brain.

as naoya drifted off to sleep, his last thought rang out in his head.

tomorrow will be a good day.
