Sae glared daggers at his phone that he clutched with an iron grip. His ‘generous’ mentor Luna had given him a ticket to watch a youth team match between FC Barcha and Alavés, both teams were indeed strong and he figured Luna only invited him to strengthen his already impressive analytical abilities.
However his mentor failed to inform him that they wouldn't be travelling together to the venue even though they were staying at the same hotel in Barcelona, all he received was a text ‘Aren't you here yet? You're gonna miss the game.’
That jerk.
Luna was so selfish, he was 25 and had a nice car but of course he wouldn't offer Sae a ride to the stadium. When he figured Luna left without him he had to quickly scramble to call a taxi from his own pocket. He will make Luna regret messing with him once he joins the main team in Re Al as their chosen striker. Sure he is 16 now but he has plenty of time to improve and demonstrate his value for the team.
After the awkward ride to the stadium and pushing past the grey coloured crowd that made it difficult to navigate. He found out that he just made it before half-time. Looking for Luna would be challenging since everyone looked the same, instead he focused on searching for his seat and his self-centered mentor would be sitting beside him.
Shuffling through the audience he eventually made it to his spot. Luna sat beside him with his arms folded and a smug expression. “You should try leaving earlier next time, less hassle that way.” The scion laughed to himself. Sae could feel the anger bubbling up, he knew his mentor enjoyed teasing others to fish for reactions but he kept his face neutral and did his best to not let it bother him and replied.“What did I miss?”
Luna pouted that Sae didn't take the bait but shook his head. “Not much, a lot of them have a decent understanding of their position and plays but they're lacking that raw untapped talent. All except for that new guy there apparently.”
Sae turned his head the moment the forward from barcha leapt up and kicked the ball whilst in the air, as his foot made contact suddenly the young striker's whole world burst into colour, everything that was previously a mix of grey shades now had life, he grabbed the railing to hold himself steady as the overwhelming sensation took over his mind completely.
The rest of the crowd stood and cheered as Bunny Iglesias had scored the first goal of the match, right before the half time whistle blew.
Sae was breathing heavily, in this world of grey if your world is filled with colours after looking at a person then that meant you had met your soulmate. Sae tried to wrap his head around that he met his soulmate and they played soccer too - how lucky. He always wondered what his soulmate was going to be like but he needed to know more about him, just looking at him wasn't enough.
The scion reached for the younger player's shoulder which effectively snapped him back to reality. “Yeah that goal was pretty good but you look like you've seen a ghost.” Sae turned to Luna, his face now filled with colours he doesn't know the exact names of. Some people studied the shades of grey to find out what colours their features are but Sae didn't have time to care for anything other than soccer.
Luna continued “Hmm, the Barcha player is acting a bit odd too don't you think, what is he looking for?”
Sae's eyes darted down to the pitch, trying to ignore the crowd's loud cheering. His soulmate was acting strange looking around for something-
Then it hit Sae like a train.
His soulmate doesn't know who filled his world with colour. His world probably lit up the moment he looked to the fans to celebrate. His eyes frantically look around and turn to see if anyone would give him a sign but no such luck.
“He's acting odd because he doesn't know who his soulmate is-”
Luna stifled a laugh behind his free hand
“That's got to be the worst, finding your soulmate in an audience and not knowing who it is. Poor kid, well you can't win them all.” he shrugged nonchalantly.
Sae wasn't the type to just give up, he turned to face the scion. “I'm his soulmate, when he kicked the ball suddenly everything became bright, what do I do? I need to talk to him, I-”
His mentor stopped him from overthinking by holding his hand up. “Easy now, let's go through this slowly. What colour are my eyes?”
Sae shrugged “I don't know, I never studied colours before since I didn't think I would meet my soulmate.”
Luna rolled his eyes “my eyes are green, can you make a comparison, find something else that's green or rather the same colour as my eyes?”
Sae looked around and stared at the pitch and pointed “the field…it's a bit darker but kinda the same.”
The star player of Re Al clicked his tongue and pulled out his phone, quickly calling a number saved, but Sae couldn't see the name from where he stood. The person answered surprisingly quickly.
Luna's voice was rather calm and that was reassuring. “I'll meet you inside, oh and do me a favour and grab that clueless Bunny with you, I have someone who wants to meet him.” With that he ended the call.
Sae wasn't sure who Luna was talking to but he watches sadly as Bunny is leaving the field with his team.
The scion, after hanging up the call, throws it back in his pocket and grabs the younger player from under his arm. “Come on, let's go meet your soulmate. You got about 10 minutes to talk to him and convince him you're not a liar.”
As they made their way down the halls Sae watched as the mentor for Barcha looked at him curiously before whistling.
“I remember you, you're Sae Itoshi, scouted by Re Al a while back. Good to see ya kid.”
Barcha's mentor was nothing like his at all, polar opposites. This guy seemed genuinely friendly, how strange.
Sae entered the room behind the mentor and saw Bunny sitting on a table, head turning only to see the younger player enter the room. Luna pats Sae's head before leaving. “Don't mind us, we're going to be talking in the other room, you two be nice.”
Bunny waves at them “see you soon Lavinho.” Ah so Lavinho was his name Sae thought. As soon as the door clicked shut Bunny turned his focus back to Sae.
“Soooo Lavinho said you wanted to speak to me, did you want an autograph or something” he laughed.
Sae froze. It was true he did want to speak to Bunny but he didn't think at all how to word this conversation. He remembered his mother talking about the importance of soulmates but he didn't understand what to say or do.
Bunny paused, kicking his feet from the awkward silence. The younger player sighed believing he had nothing to lose.
“Hey I know this is going to sound ridiculous but you're my soulmate, I saw you on the pitch right before you scored and everything became colourful. Then I saw you look around and thought the same thing happened to you?”
Suddenly the Barcha player looked more invested. “Yes exactly, when I turned to look at the crowd bursts of colour appeared everywhere but I don't know who caused that…so it was you, a forward from a rival team.”
This was admittedly true, they were technically rivals now but also soulmates.
The thought was still so unbelievable, no matter how many times he went over it, Sae doesn't think he'll ever get used to telling himself that he has found his life partner.
Bunny chimed in once more
“So does that make us boyfriends like Lavinho and Luna?”
Sae stared in silence. Luna and Lavinho? Sae wasn't even aware that Luna even had a partner but it did make sense, since the scion spoke like he could already see colour very well.
The Spaniard laughed “you didn't know? Yeah Lavinho and Luna always sneak around during half time to make out. Still if you're really my soulmate then I think we should also seal the deal.” Bunny hopped off the table and took a step closer to Sae, he was a little shorter than Bunny but Sae could still reach.
He grabbed the Spanish player by his Jersey and pulled him into a quick kiss, Bunny's lips were surprisingly soft. Only when he pulled away he noticed Bunny's cheeks matched the colour of his eyes, he didn't understand what was wrong until he saw the hand extended out for him.
Bunny meant a handshake, not a kiss.
Sae slaps a hand over his face and groans in frustration. The Spaniard quickly composed himself “wow that was- haha, really good, I can't believe you skipped two whole zones, handshakes and hugs are optional for Sae Itoshi.” Bunny teased without any ill-intent.
“Don't make this into a bigger deal, you were the one talking about our mentors making out a moment ago.” Sae quickly defended.
Bunny laughs but notices his phone alarm go off and he swipes away the notification before handing it to Sae.
“Quick, put your number in and we can chat later, half time is almost up and I need to get back on the field.”
Sae nodded carefully and gave his phone number to his…partner? Is that the correct label?
Bunny was pleased and rushed out “if I get a hat trick, then we should go on a date for real.”
Sae hides his amusement, he only knew Bunny for a few moments but from what he's gathered it seemed like a relaxed person.
When Sae was ready to leave he spotted Luna with his hair more messy, his shirt was unbuttoned from the top and he had dark marks over his neck.
Remembering what Bunny had informed him earlier, it was Sae's turn to be smug for once. “Did you enjoy the half-time break? Did you talk about anything interesting?” Luna's head snaps at Sae, glancing at him whilst rubbing at his swollen lips.
“Let me tell you something, if Bunny is anything like Lavinho then you're in for a wild ride. Come to think of it, I was around your age when I found out about my soulmate.”
Sae agreed that Bunny was full of energy, however he was certain he could manage both his soulmate and his dream of being the world's best striker.
