Chapter Text
Steve slumped over the table, averting Jane’s gaze, his eyes instead fixated on the window. It was raining and gray outside.
Jane was sitting on the other side of the table, mulling over a book of puzzles. She heard Steve sigh and looked up at him.
“Hey Steve, what’s wrong?”
Steve was quiet for a minute.
“I just…. I just can’t shake the feeling that the world would be better if I didn’t exist at all.”
“Aw don’t say that, you’re the most wonderful person I know.” Jane reached over and held Steve’s hand in hers, gently squeezing his fingers. He squeezed back.
Steve sighed again. “Yeah I know I’m not…. a bad person, I just feel like my existence itself is causing everything else to fall into ruin like…. a butterfly effect.”
“…..Nothing is falling into ruin Steve, we’ll be fine. I think you read too many of those cosmology books.”
Steve grumbled a little bit and removed his hand from Jane’s. He shifted his position to bury his face in his hands. “Yeah… yeah you’re probably right. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
There was another moment of silence.
“I don’t like seeing you like this, Steve.”
Steve grimaced. “I know Jane… I’m sorry… I try to be positive but it’s hard to hold it in constantly.”
“Wait, do you feel like this all the time?”
He didn’t respond.
