Work Text:

Rook brushed down Darvin’s armor, folding the cloth over and tucking it into his belt alongside his sword in its sheath. The weeks following Elgar’nan’s fall had been spent recovering, but now it was only a matter of time before herself and the others were supposed to go out and be paraded as the heroes that stopped the Evanuris and the Blight.

She smoothed her hand over the griffon on her front sash. At least, she presumed the Blight had been stopped somehow. With no more Archdemons, it seemed preposterous to imagine something like that now.

He seemed to be reading her mind. “Copper for your thoughts?”

“Yeah--” She flicked her eyes up to meet him before moving to straighten up his collar. “Do you think there will be any more Blights now that we saved the world?”

She felt his hand rest on her waist. “I think we’re allowed to sit out the next one.”

“Well, yeah, but I still wonder what’ll happen. The Blight’s still out there, but we stopped the Sixth. So…”

“I think you’re allowed to take your mind off it for a while; but if there is another Blight, the Wardens will take care of it. They always do.” He tilted his head to let her worry her hands up to tidy his brows, giving her a look with his eyes closed and a shake of his head. “C’mon. Relax.”

     “I am relaxed.”

“No you’re not - you always get this nervous when we’re about to do something big.” She felt him poke her side. “Is someone nervous about going out in public?”

Rook shook her head and let out a long, faux sigh. “You got me. I’m positively terrified of being seen as the hero after a life of screwing up.”

“That’s it.” She watched him open his eyes to look at her, leaning in. “Everyone here’s screwed something up. But I think you’ve done plenty to make up for it too.”

“You’re right.” Rook leaned in further, putting their foreheads together. “And we did save the world, after all.”

“And Thedas owes us a nice reception, more than anything else.”

Rook took a moment with her head against Davrin’s, taking the moment with them and them alone before going out to face the unknown with nothing to slay. Her hands moved from his face to hold onto him by leaning them over his shoulders, and she felt his hands move up her waist to bring her in closer.

“I always liked the Grey Warden uniforms.”
