Work Text:

Dear Diary.

People say that loving someone is hard, but confessing your love is harder.

Final exams are coming up, and after that, I'll graduate from school. I don't know if after graduation I'll see Chan again. I wish I was a little more confident to confront him. But I can't—my heartbeat fastens around him and words seem to get stuck in my throat. He's so handsome and kind, and on top of that, he's the captain of the basketball team. Every girl likes him.

I wish I could just go and ask him to be my boyfriend.

Why is it so hardddddddd… but it's fine, I still have some time left, so I should just focus on his upcoming match. I gotta support him. After all, he's my future boyfriend.

Seungmin giggled at his own words before closing his diary and safely putting it in his bag. He yawned, eyes heavy, as he slumped on his bed, drifting into dreamland.

The next day, Seungmin was woken up by his mother's shouting. He groaned, but when he saw the time, it was past 7:30 and school starts at 8:00. He got up quickly, running towards the bathroom to do his morning routine.

After checking himself one last time in the mirror, Seungmin finally went downstairs, eating breakfast while his mother scolded him for not sleeping on time.

But Seungmin didn't pay attention. He was only thinking about Chan—how Chan was going to play in tomorrow's match and how he would shout at the top of his lungs to support him.

Finishing his breakfast, Seungmin quickly picked up his bag, waving his mother goodbye.

Seungmin ran all the way to school. He was late, thanks to his wonderful habit of sleeping in. He rushed towards his class, and being the luckiest on the planet, the teacher was already there.

"Oh… Mr. Kim, it's too early for the class,"

Mr. Jang spoke sarcastically.

His math teacher. He fucking hated him.

The whole class's eyes were on him—some gossiping, giggling, or giving him side-eyes. But Seungmin didn't mind, until he saw Chan also looking at him.

Life is brutal, isn't it?

This was the first time Chan had noticed him. Like this. Getting scolded by the teacher.

He let out an awkward laugh before bowing in front of the teacher.

"I'm sorry, sir."

The teacher nodded since Seungmin was only 5 minutes late. He went towards his seat, cursing Mr. Jang in his mind. Fortunately, the whole class went back to paying attention to the teacher again.

Finally, the torture of math ended, and Seungmin already found himself exhausted. He wasn't paying attention in class—how could he, when Chan was in the same room?

Neither he liked math nor Mr. Jang, but the only reason he suffered through that torture was Chan. Because he could see him all the time.

When lunchtime came, Seungmin found himself in the library, the quietest place. Even though he sucked at math, he was pretty good in other subjects, and that's why Mr. Jang hated him—because his grades were the lowest only in math.

When Seungmin found his favourite seat, the one behind the bookshelves, he quickly sat down and took out his diary to write something.

Dear Diary.

Life is cruel, but my fate is the cruelest.

For the first time in my life, Chan noticed me—but at the wrong time. Mr. Jang, that fucker, was scolding me again for being late. I swear he holds a grudge against me.

Okay, but on the bright side, Chan noticed me. Isn't it great… I'm so happy. I wish he would notice me tomorrow too. I can't wait for tomorrow's match, he looks so good while playing. Like—how can someone be so good at everything?

I think I'm falling for him more and more with each passing second.

Seungmin closed the diary as he checked the time—lunchtime was already over. He quickly stood up from the chair, the next class was literature, and today he had a test too, for which he didn’t want to be late.

Seungmin ran out of the library, leaving his diary forgotten on the table. He didn’t even notice Chan entering the library, he was in such a rush.

Chan walked across the shelves, trying to find a random book to kill some time. He picked one up, walking towards the seat where Seungmin had been sitting previously.

When Chan noticed the diary on the table, he picked it up, looking for the owner’s name. He didn’t mean to open it, but as soon as he did, he quickly got the owner’s name.

Kim Seungmin.

Chan chuckled softly as he remembered what happened today in the first class. Seungmin was an interesting guy—at least for Chan. He had noticed Seungmin, the boy too loud while cheering to go unnoticed.

He had seen him daydreaming, doing silly things which Chan had always found cute. Because for Chan, Seungmin looked like a puppy—a cute one.

He had always wanted to talk to the younger, but he had never gotten the chance since they only shared one class, and Seungmin was always late to math.

Chan’s hands hovered over the page, wanting to flip it, but at the same time, he didn’t want to read someone’s personal stuff. So, being a gentleman, he closed the diary and placed it in his bag, thinking he would return it to Seungmin later.

School finished in the blink of an eye. Seungmin’s literature test went great—it must have, since he studied so hard for it. Seungmin grinned as he walked home.

After finishing dinner, he went to his room, wanting to write something in his diary. He looked into his bag only to find it missing.

He panicked. The diary had all his secrets, and he couldn’t let anyone read it. He remembered the last time he took it out was in the library. Thinking the librarian must have picked it up, he sighed.

"I’ll look for it tomorrow," Seungmin muttered to himself before slumping on the bed.

He couldn’t stop thinking that someone might have picked up his diary and read it.

……….

Chan groaned as he lay on his bed and closed his eyes. He had been practicing for tomorrow’s match, and now all he wanted was to sleep peacefully.

But as soon as he remembered Seungmin’s diary, his eyes opened. Taking it out from his bag, he thought for a while. He was curious to read what was inside, though he also felt guilty.

In the end, curiosity won. He opened the diary and was shocked.

The only thing Seungmin mentioned the most in the entire diary was him. Chan blushed whenever he saw his name written there.

Seungmin had practically only written about him—to the point it didn’t even seem like Seungmin’s diary anymore.

Reading it, Chan knew Seungmin liked him. He also realized he had feelings for the younger—more than admiration—and now it was confirmed.

He had noticed Seungmin had written about not being confident enough to confess. So Chan, being a good guy, decided he would do it for him.

Chan grinned at the thought. Tomorrow’s match was going to be fun.

……….

The corridors buzzed with students as the bell rang. It was lunchtime. Seungmin quickly packed his stuff and ran towards the library to look for his diary.

He prayed the entire time that he would find it.

When he asked the librarian about the diary, the man simply shrugged, denying there was any diary left behind.

So Seungmin went to the teacher who kept lost items.

No luck.

Seungmin groaned in frustration. Chan’s match was about to start, and he couldn’t miss it. But he also had to find his diary.

Sighing, he chose to watch the match first—he could look for his diary later.

As soon as Chan noticed Seungmin in the crowd, he smiled. Of course, it went unnoticed by Seungmin.

Chan had already planned everything. He was just waiting for the match to start so his team could win.

Seungmin settled into a seat in the middle, since the front rows were crowded with girls shouting loudly.

He rolled his eyes at them, focusing on Chan instead.

The whistle blew to start the match. Chan, like always, was amazing. Every time he scored, Seungmin was the loudest to cheer, making Chan chuckle.

The match ended with Chan’s team winning. The team cheered, and Seungmin did too. Chan made his way to the bench with a smirk on his face.

His bag was laying there, and while girls crowded him with water bottles and gifts, Chan’s eyes were fixed on the puppy boy.

He took Seungmin’s diary out of his bag and started walking towards Seungmin’s seat.

Seungmin’s heart pounded as he saw Chan walking towards him. He didn’t even notice the familiar diary in his hands.

"Hey, Seungmin!" Chan spoke loud enough to get everyone’s attention.

Seungmin’s eyes widened, his heart stammering in his chest.

"You wrote that you’re not confident enough to confess to me directly," Chan said as he finally stood in front of him, holding the diary.

Seungmin felt words catch in his throat. Chan had read it. Every single word. Heat rushed to his cheeks.

"That’s why I wrote my answer in here," Chan said, returning the diary.

Seungmin quickly flipped through the pages until he found the one. Right where he had written about being confident enough—there was Chan’s answer.

He blushed hard.

"I like you too. Be my boyfriend, Seungmin."

Chan said out loud, making everyone gasp. Seungmin felt himself burning with blush.

"I-I’ve been... dying for this moment," Seungmin finally stammered, burying his face in his hands.

Chan gently removed his hands and pulled him into a hug.

Everyone cheered for them, some girls rolling their eyes in jealousy.

Chan pulled away, looking at Seungmin.

"It’s bad manners to read someone’s personal stuff." Seungmin gave him a little punch.

"And it’s bad manners to stalk someone and write about them," Chan shot back with a smirk.

"I-I wasn’t stalking you… it was a coinciden—"

Before Seungmin could finish, he was cut off by Chan’s lips on his.

Everyone cheered even louder at the kiss. And Seungmin realized… his secret diary had just written the beginning of his love story.
