————————————————————————

It was a brisk October morning, which was a relief for many considering the persistent heat that ate away at much of their September. The woman’s wail was loud, permeating the sounds of the quiet lab, still sleepy in lieu of the sun that currently hides behind the buildings and hills, not yet peaking through the windows, and the lack of coffee. The dew on the grass isn’t quite cold enough to frost, but it’s a near thing. As Dr. Lorraine is prepared to give birth, she is encouraged to breathe. She pushed and breathed and heaved for three hours and… he was stillborn.

Greif-riden, she took the body. At times like these she was glad to be a scientist.

It probably wasn’t the best idea, morally, and also it had a near-nonexistent chance of working. The original experiment failed anyway but… oh, what choice did she have? And so, with a small team of her best, he was alive. He was growing. He would live, and be
a little different than many.

we 53R0 was over a year old now, about as healthy as he could be. It was around that time that 70457 was grown… nobody knew where her fetus came from. Much like 53R0, she was genetically modified. He was made such that a demon would appear, pointed ears, horns (as small and dull as they were at the time), and a tail with a heart-shaped tip. 70457 was based on a moth, two little developing wings, four arms, and two fluffy little antennae.

*~*~* *~*~* *~*~*

The staff had taken to calling them nicknames, based on their codes. 53R0 was Fero and 70457 was Toast.

*~*~* *~*~* *~*~*

Fero and Toast were older now, him seven and her six. Their codes not used in years, nearly forgotten, and they were being taught the typical education for children of their ages in the area. They were both raised by Dr. Lorraine, who was his biological mother and her adoptive mother. She went home to sleep, as she had a life outside of the lab as well. There were a few lab workers who lived there, who tended to them when they needed it.

There were two sleep-in-scientists that they didn’t encounter often, mainly because they worked on a different project, Dr. Leo and Dr. Hart. Dr. Leo was a man of average height in his mid-30’s, short reddish-brown hair and a short beard, a rectangular face, and boxy eyebrows. He had centralized heterochromia in his right eye, which nearly looked like a star upon closer inspection. Because of those baby blues, Dr. Hart often called him “starboy”.

Dr. Hart had medium-length hair, a mullet, but in a cool way and not a crusty old redneck way. It was a deep, navy blue, a tuft of it nearly in his eye at all times. It was near shoulder length, but only just. He had pale skin, pale from far too few hours outside, working in the laboratory instead of allowing himself to enjoy the sun. His eyes were gold, with irises a very dark purple, nearly black. He had a near perpetual 5’ o clock shadow, due to forgetfulness. He often wore a blue shirt, darker than his hair. It was a muscle tee with an atom on it. He wore a soft yellow belt, and green pants. His lab coat was calf-length, and cutoff at the sleeves, as if he had an obsession with showing his arms. During experiments though, he wore a proper one. He was two years and a month younger than his partner.
