It was a quiet night just outside of the safe haven.
The so-called “Angel” was by herself, hanging out in the caves, having some alone time, and watching for any intruders.
So far, she hadn’t seen anything, which was good.
“Cathy?”
A small voice says.
Cathy turns behind her to see her little porcelain, redheaded friend had walked up behind her.
“Oh, hi Poppy.”
She says, kneeling down. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to check on you.”
The little doll says, climbing into Cathy’s hand. “You haven't come back for a while.
Cathy smiles softly, picking her up.
“I appreciate it.” She says. “How are the others doing?”
“They’re doing fine.”
Poppy says. “They’re all either resting or relaxing.”
“Good… and… how’s Daisy?”
Cathy adds, a bit nervous.
Poppy smiles.
“Daisy is doing better.” She says. “She’s resting peacefully, and that’s helping her heal.”
She says.
Cathy smiles.
“Good.” She says. “I hope she recovers soon…”
Poppy nods. “Me too…”
Cathy looks back out into the caverns.
“I can’t imagine what it must be like…”
She says quietly.
“Suffering down here… for years…”
Poppy didn’t say anything.
The two were quiet for a while, taking in the calm-ish atmosphere.
“Listen…”
Poppy says, placing a tiny hand on hers.
“I… I just want you to know how much we appreciate everything you’re doing…”
She says softly.
“Me, Theo, Kissy, the girls, all of us…”
She smiles. “You’re amazing, Cathy.”
She says. “Any other employee couldn’t, and surely wouldn’t… do half the things you have…”
Cathy smiles back.
“Well… I’d do anything for my family…”
She says.
“And not just Theo… you, Kissy, the girls, Sam, everyone…”
She says gently.
“You’re ALL my family now.”
Poppy moves closer, hugging her softly.
Or, well, as much as she could.
“You’re a real angel.”
She says.
Cathy sighs, holding the tiny doll close to her chest.
“I’m no angel…”
She says. “I’ve just been trying to help everyone… lord knows you all deserve it after the hell you’ve been through…”
Poppy was silent for another moment.
“But you are!”
Another voice says.
They both look behind them, seeing that Sam had found them here.
“Cathy… you ARE an angel.”
He says, walking closer.
“You rescued me from the little menaces, and saved Theo, and protected us from the monsters, and so much more.”
He says.
Poppy giggles.
“That sounds like an angel to me.”
She says softly.
Cathy smiles gently.
She still didn’t believe it…
But if it’d humor them…
“Thank you.”
She says. “You guys are very sweet.”
She extends her free arm for a group hug, to which Sam obliges.
As the three of them embraced, Cathy felt happy.
She might not feel like an angel, but whether or not she did, she was to them.
