Chapter Text
The fire crackled steadily in the fireplace, and the scent of a freshly cooked meal mixed with the earthy aroma of the cool autumn air. Every evening at 6pm sharp, Wumuti and his pack gathered around the table in the cozy dining room of their small cabin, which was tucked deep in the woods, away from the main part of town. Dinner was always a time of structure, a reaffirmation of unity. Wumuti, head alpha, always sat next to Hyun, their only beta, who sat across from Rui, their second alpha, who always sat next to Haru, their only omega. They ate together, cleaned together, and each of them helped the other find their place. It was a familiar rhythm in the pack house, with the pack bond humming soft but steady. But tonight as the evening wore on, Wumuti felt the smallest inkling of a pull in their pack bond. So small, that he couldn’t quite place who exactly it was coming from.
As the last of the dishes were stacked after dinner, Wumuti’s sharp eyes caught the subtle signs of fatigue in Haru’s posture. He was hunched over, moving slower than usual. His scent is off… bitter, Wumuti thought. Without a word, his mind reached out, threading a gentle but insistent connection through their pack bond woven directly to Haru.
Haru, come on, you’re not looking well.
Haru jumped and blinked, eyes meeting Wumuti’s gaze. The silent communication between them did not go unnoticed by Rui and Hyun. His cheeks were flushed, and his body felt chilled even though the fireplace was fully lit. Haru gave him a small smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’m fine, hyung. I think I’m just tired… you know how rough my presentation was.”
Which was not a lie. Just one month ago Haru had presented, and it threw the entire pack for a whirlwind. Haru had really struggled, and was still struggling to get used to the new dynamics. The new scents, his own scent, the need to be close to his pack… it was different and his mind and body were scrambling to keep up. He was exhausted. The pack link was the most confusing of all, often overwhelming when the pack was trying to communicate from a distance. At first, it had been hard to tell where his thoughts ended and the pack’s began. However, he has slowly gotten used to it, although not perfect.
Wumuti’s forehead creased with concern. His mind probed gently, reading into Haru and sensing how the omega’s body was starting to fight off whatever illness had gotten into his system.
You should head up to the pack room, Haru. We’ll all be up there shortly after we finish cleaning up. You need rest.
Wumuti felt the pack bond pulse. The pack room was their sanctuary, a place where their bonds were the strongest and a place they could go to when the world became a bit too much. Haru hesitated, not wanting to mess up their nightly routine of everyone helping to clean up. His eyes flickered toward Rui and Hyun, not wanting to leave them to finish the chores alone.
“Pup, you need rest. Please go. I promise we’ll be there soon” Hyun softly exclaimed, running his hand through Haru’s hair.
He stood slowly from where he sat in the dining chair, wobbling slightly. Hyun caught his elbow to steady him but Haru still felt dizzy with fatigue.
“Go rest, little one” Wumuti said, voice firm but gentle. His commanding aura was soothing and made Haru feel reassured in a way he didn’t fully understand yet. “We’ll take care of everything here” he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to Haru’s warm forehead. Haru wrapped his arms around Wumuti’s waist, burying his face into his neck where his scent gland was. Fresh rain with a hint of pine filled his senses. Wumuti’s arms wrapped around him instinctively, and for a moment the world around them faded into the soft hum of the pack’s strong connection. Wumuti was no stranger to this stage of an omega’s presentation recovery. It was the body working hard to stabalize and the mind reshaping itself to fit into the intricate strings of a pack. Fatigue and even illness was normal, yet Wumuti’s protective instincts grew each time the faint feeling of fatigue rippled through the bond.
-
By the time the three boys made it to the pack room, it was late but the house was clean. Rui opened the door quietly, careful not to make too much noise. The room smelled faintly of all four of their scents, with the scent of cinnamon and apple, Haru’s scent, being the strongest. Haru was curled up on one of the large blankets near the bed, breathing slow and eyebrows pinched together. His scent faintly smelled of fever, Rui noticed, but not enough to make a cause for concern. Wumuti felt the pack bond settle as he sat beside Haru, softly brushing his knuckles alongside his cheek.
“He’s okay,” Rui whispered from the doorway, keeping his voice low.
“Yeah,” Hyun said, glancing over. “I’ll go start the bath. It’ll help all of us settle. Come help me, Rui hyung”
Before stepping out, Hyun gave Wumuti a quick grounding scent, maple quickly wafting through the air. Relax, it said silently. Wumuti softly pulled at the bond as a quiet thank you before turning back to the sleeping omega. Just then, Haru’s eyes opened, blinking blearily yet his gaze finding Wumuti almost immediately. The moment their eyes met, Wumuti felt Haru’s quiet awareness tug at the thread of connection.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you,” Wumuti said softly.
Haru stretched and shook his head, “It’s okay… I felt you nearby.”
“Of course you did,” Wumuti said, a small smile forming. “How are you feeling?”
Haru yawned and stretched some more. “Just… tired. And weak. But I think I’ll be okay tomorrow. I’m not dizzy anymore”
Wumuti nodded, still keeping the bond open in search for any sign of deeper distress. “That’s normal at this stage. What you need now is rest.” Haru couldn’t help the small blush that appeared on his cheeks. There were a few beats of silence, then his voice brushed softly into Wumuti’s mind through the bond… hesitant but clear.
Could you… maybe… scent me hyung?
Wumuti once again brushed his knuckles against Haru’s cheek. “Of course, pup. You don’t even have to ask” he said quietly.
Wumuti pulled Haru up into his lap, supporting his back and placing a soft kiss to Haru’s lips before brushing his lips along Haru’s jaw. Haru couldn’t help but shiver, bringing a hand up to grasp at Wumuti’s shirt sleeve. Wumuti shifted closer, pressing his face into the crook of Haru’s neck until their scents merged naturally. Haru couldn’t hold back a whimper, Wumuti’s scent of fresh rain grounding him in an overwhelming way, sprinkled with trust and authority. Haru then let out a soft breath, shoulders finally relaxing as the feeling of comfort sank deep into his chest. Haru’s own scent strengthened in response and Wumuti let his own scent deepen just enough to wrap around it.
When Wumuti pulled away, Haru was barely awake.
“Better?” Wumuti chuckled.
“Yeah…” Haru whispered, “Thank you hyung.”
Before Wumuti could respond, Hyun’s voice called from down the hall. “Bath’s ready! Get in here before Rui floods the bathroom with bubbles!”
-
The pack washed up quickly. When they finally returned to the pack room, it was well past midnight.
“Hyung, can we please sleep in tomorrow?” Rui whined. “I don’t think we’ll be behind on winter preparations by missing one morning!”
“Good one, Rui. No. Winter is coming fast and you know it,” Wumuti scowled, although he couldn’t help the way his lips twitched up into a small smile.
“Yes sir!” Rui said sarcastically, putting his hand up to his forehead in a mock-salute. Lightheartedness flowed through the bond.
“Get some rest,” Wumuti said as he placed a lingering kiss on the other alpha’s lips.
“What about me?!” Hyun dramatically exclaimed. “I’m the one who drew the bath and without me being Rui’s supervisor you all would be drowning in bubbles!”
“Drowning?” Wumuti questioned. “That’s a bit excessive don’t you think?”
“No,” Hyun pouted, tugging at the bond.
“Come here” Wumuti whispered as he pulled Hyun into a tight hug. “Thank you baby, I love you” he said as he peppered kisses across Hyun’s face, leaving one last kiss on his scent gland making him shiver.
The four of them settled down into bed, with blankets layered together. Wumuti turned back to look at Haru, who was already fast asleep. He rested his arm lightly against the omega, curling under his torso and pulling him in against him. Haru sighed softly in his sleep, feeling the most content he’s felt in a while. Knowing all of his packmates were with him made their bond pulse with a sense of safety. Everything felt right. Like home.
-
The edges of dawn barely started to unfold when the pack alpha awoke the next morning, if you could call it that. He couldn’t sleep. His instincts were telling him he needed to go check the perimeter after neglecting to do so last night. But Rui was already awake. “I already did it hyung,” Rui whispered, seeming to read Wumuti’s mind. Wumuti turned his head, surprised. “You were fretting over Haru all night. I wanted to take some responsibility off your shoulders. You do so much for us alpha” Rui murmured, his eukalyptus scent emitted a feeling of loyalty that settled the tension in Wumuti’s chest.
Wumuti pulled him close so that their foreheads touched, while rubbing small circles on his arm. His mind reached through the bond to Rui.
Thank you, honey. Did you sleep at all? So much for you wanting to sleep in…
Rui smiled sheepishly.
I got a few hours hyung, don’t worry about me.
Haru woke up to the fluttering of the pack bond, inhaling the subtle scent of fresh rain that always clung to the pack’s home. The fatigue that had gripped him the night before was gone and his head felt clear. When he sat up, he noticed Wumuti and Rui having a seemingly silent conversation.
Hyung…
Both packmates turned to catch Haru’s gaze, eyes tired yet alert.
“You look better,” Wumuti said with a small smile.
Haru nodded, rubbing his eyes. “I feel better too. Thank you, hyung.”
“Good,” Wumuti said. “Because we have some preparations to do today. Winter is coming,” he announced, firm but kind.
Haru crawled over, sprawling out on top of both alphas. “But it’s so warm in here, and it’s so cold out there,” he whined loudly while shoving his face into Wumuti’s scent gland. Playful energy buzzed through the bond. It momentarily pulsed with shared infatuation because of Haru's laughter. Wumuti felt almost paralyzed, having to take a deep breath to clear his mind of the dizzying effects of the bond at its strongest. They had business to attend to. He placed a kiss against Haru’s lips before getting up, much to the dismay of both boys who whined simultaneously.
Wumuti looked over at the empty space in the room. “Where’s Hyun?” He asked.
“When I came back from completing the perimeter check he was in the kitchen. He said something about starting breakfast early since he couldn’t sleep. You know how he gets…” Rui said softly. “I told him to come back to bed, but…” he trailed off.
Wumuti sighed and ran his hand down his face. “Okay, let me go see what he’s up to.” He hesitated, before smirking, “You two don’t get too rowled up without me…”
“Hyung!” Haru cried, laughing. Rui added, “No promises!” While dramatically laying his entire body weight onto Haru.
-
Wumuti padded quietly down the hall where the smell of blueberries wafted through the air. He paused before stepping into the kitchen, trying to sense how Hyun was feeling. Tiredness, but nothing more… maybe he really just couldn’t sleep, Wumuti wondered. Wumuti stepped into the kitchen, curious to see what Hyun was making. Hyun felt his presence and turned around, eyes sparkling.
“Hyung, I made blueberry muffins. I know Haru loves them… I wanted to do something special for him. They’re still warm if you want one,” Hyun exclaimed, the tips of his ears turning red. Pride swelled in Wumuti’s chest. The bond pulsed once, then stilled. Hyun walked up to Wumuti and wrapped his arms around him, laying his head on the top of Wumuti’s.
“Y’know hyung, you can treat yourself sometimes too. Everything doesn’t have to be go go go all the time…” Hyun mumbled, scent spiking with reassurance.
“I know,” Wumuti said, lips pursed while returning Hyun’s hug. But Hyun didn’t miss the way Wumuti’s eyes kept flickering to the kitchen window.
Wumuti thrived on routine. Disruption of his pack’s routine makes him anxious, and the past 24 hours have done exactly that. Leaving Hyun to continue his baking extravaganza for his baby omega, Wumuti threw on his winter coat and walked outside. He exhaled a long breath, watching it turn into mist before fading. He looked around at the trees and noticed they were already shedding the last of their dying leaves. He stayed out there for a long while, long enough for his fingertips to lose feeling. The world felt dull and quiet in the way it only does before snowfall, even as the first rays of sunlight had started to make their way through the trees. Worry spiked once again in his chest. The wind’s been from the north for two days now. That means snow within the week, he thought to himself. They were going to have a long day if they wanted to play catch up with mother nature.
Boys, get your winter clothes on. We have a lot of preparation to finish today, Wumuti announced through the bond, voice firm leaving no room for argument.
Not even 30 minutes later, all four boys were standing outside the cabin, stomachs full of blueberry muffins.
“Alright,” Wumuti started, scent heavy with gentle authority. “Snow is likely to fall in the next few days. That means we need to stock up. Firewood for the hearth, pantry stores, herbs, everything.”
The rhythm of work came easily, each member of the pack falling into a familiar flow of orders. Rui and Hyun carried firewood and split logs, stacking them beside the cabin. Wumuti packed and labeled the dried herbs they had grow months prior and prepared the garden for winter, fingers turning red from the cold despite his gloves. Haru muttered calculations to himself about inventory as he organized supplies in the shed. Wumuti moved between them, overseeing and assisting, though not overbearing, making sure no detail went unchecked. The cold was creeping in faster every day, and there was still so much to do. His jaw was tight not out of irritation, but rather worry. Haru noticed. He always did.
Between trips hauling bundles of kindling, he looked over to where Wumuti stood by the woodpile, scanning the treeline with a distant expression.
“You’re worried,” Haru said softly. For once, Wumuti didn’t deny it, although he said nothing. Haru felt the bond was pulled tight… stiff.
By lunch time, the ground was hard against their boots from the cold and their cheeks were dusted with pink. Rui argued loudly with Hyun about how high to stack the firewood. Haru tripped over a stray log and Rui catched him, both of them laughing so hard they couldn’t breathe. Wumuti stood off to the side, watching them. His worry started to ease as he saw how well they worked together. This was the reason Wumuti sometimes had to push them. Not for control, not for sheer authority, but for moments like this. By late afternoon, the woodpile reached shoulder height, the pantry shelves were full, and the garden boxes were sealed for winter. Their muscles ached, but they were satisfied. Wumuti looked over at what they had accomplished and felt the tight coil of anxiety finally loosen. They were ready. Or, ready as they’ll ever be, at least.
-
The warmth of the cabin burned at the edges of their fingers as they stepped inside. The pack had gathered in front of the fire, all of their energy burned out. Haru sat near the flames, hands outstretched towards the warmth. Hyun leaned against the couch, eyes closed, while Rui absentmindedly played with Hyun’s fingers beside him. Wumuti sat beside Rui, watching the embers in the fire. The scent of fresh rain wrapped around the room, comforting and reassuring. The pack bond thrummed with pride at what they had accomplished.
Rui leaned his head against Hyun’s shoulder. “We got so much done today,” he sighed contently.
“We did,” Hyun agreed. “More than I thought we would.”
Rui stretched his arms over his head with a loud yawn, “This means we get to sleep in tomorrow, right?” He said with a bitten back smile.
The pack alpha chuckled, shaking his head. “We’ll see.”
But the edge in his voice was gone. The weight that had hung over him all day, the need to prepare and control every detail, had faded in the warmth that surrounded him with his pack. Wumuti could feel them through the pack bond… the low hum of trust, contentment, and safety. He reached out, threading through the pack bond to all of his mates.
I love you. I wouldn’t be here without you.
