Work Text:

It was a random Friday night in November.
Tyler was at a party with half his high school classmates — too much noise, too many drinks.
He honestly hadn’t planned to end up there, and he kinda hated it.

So what do you do when you’re uncomfortable at a party?
You drink, even if you’re completely underage.

After a few drinks, everything seemed easier and lighter — he could talk to pretty much anyone, being all sociable and charming.
That’s when he made the rookie mistake of drinking a few more.

Meanwhile, Wednesday was perfectly fine writing her novel at 11 p.m. while Enid complained that she couldn’t even hear her movie on the other side of the room.
That was her plan.
She had no intention of listening to some cheesy love story that made no sense, where everyone was toxic and stupid.

Still, she had to admit — she would have preferred seeing Tyler. Which was… a very strange feeling.
Enid finally stopped complaining and put her AirPods in.
When Wednesday turned her head, Enid was already crying all the tears of her body at the movie.
She rolled her eyes and went back to her writing.

By midnight, Tyler had definitely drunk a little too much.
But everyone else was just as drunk, so it was fine.

The world was spinning slightly, so he decided to sit down on a couch somewhere in the house.
The noise felt far away, and he could finally breathe.
He opened a window to get some real fresh air.

He looked up at the moon hanging in the dark sky, and that’s when his friend Lucas came over to tell him it was time to go home.

“Uh, why?” he asked, a little sad it was over.
“Because it’s past midnight, and that’s the hour your dad told you to be home, cinderella,” Lucas replied.

Tyler laughed and followed him outside.
They started walking back toward their houses.

He looked at the moon again and suddenly got the weirdest urge to see Wednesday. Like, right now.

“Dude, we need to go to Nevermore,” he said, stopping in the middle of the street.
“What? Why?” Lucas asked, confused.
“So I can see Wednesday. Come on.”

Lucas blinked, clearly thinking about it.
And since they were both drunk, this somehow sounded like the greatest idea ever.

“You know what? Yeah. Totally. I’m coming with you,” Lucas said.
So they started walking in the opposite direction — completely forgetting about curfew.
Which was, objectively, stupid.

They walked for twenty-five long minutes through the dark, laughing about absolutely everything.
They had both forgotten their jackets at the party, but somehow they didn’t feel the cold.

When they finally reached Nevermore, they decided to climb the balcony to her dorm room — to avoid being caught.
Which was incredibly dangerous, but again, they were not in their right minds.

Before they started, Lucas suddenly grabbed Tyler’s arm.
“Oh my god, you know what you should do?”
“What?” Tyler asked, turning toward him with total seriousness.
“Marry her,” Lucas said, eyes wide, as if he had just revealed the secret of the universe.

It hit Tyler like a revelation.
Of course! Why hadn’t he thought of that before?

“That’s so truuuuue,” Tyler said, completely serious.
“I knooow! And then I’ll be your wingman,” Lucas added, smiling like this was The Plan Of The Year.
Which, in their current state, it absolutely was.

They started to climb — very dangerously — but Tyler had done it a hundred times before, so he moved mechanically while Lucas struggled behind.

Inside, Enid had just finished her movie and was putting down her laptop, ready for bed.
Wednesday was still writing, completely focused on her novel.
That’s when Enid turned her head toward the window and screamed.
“OMG, there’s something on the balconyyyy!” she yelled, more dramatic than ever.

Wednesday stood up and joined her to see what was happening.
Right on cue, Tyler and Lucas stumbled through the window, laughing.
Enid screamed again — still dramatic as hell.
Tyler and Lucas jumped at the noise.
Wednesday rolled her eyes at the chaos.

“What is wrong with you, it’s one in the morning!” Enid whisper-yelled.
“Are you drunk?” Wednesday added, arms crossed.

“Well, are you drunk?” Tyler shot back suspiciously.
“What? No!” Enid said, confused.
“Well, maybe we are, so shhhh,” Lucas said matter-of-factly.
“Yes, we noticed,” Wednesday replied. “Now, what’s your excuse for showing up like this?”

The boys looked at each other, ready to execute The Plan Of The Year.
They nodded like spies in a bad movie.

“Well, Enid, I’m supposed to distract you while Tyler asks Wednesday to marry him,” Lucas announced, far too drunk to realize he had just spoiled the plan.

“WHAT?!” Enid screamed.
“What,” Wednesday said flatly.

“Yes — will you marry me?” Tyler asked, completely serious, taking both her hands.

Enid looked like she was about to explode, probably expecting Wednesday to say “OMG yes” and run away with him.

“Tyler, you’re drunk,” Wednesday said dryly, trying to bring him back to logic.
“No, I’m in love,” he said seriously.

Enid looked seconds away from collapsing, while Lucas was smirking proudly, convinced the plan was going perfectly.

Wednesday stared at him — even if he wouldn’t remember this tomorrow, she didn’t want to be cruel.
“So?” Lucas asked hopefully.
“Yes, so?” Enid echoed, somehow emotionally invested in this nonsense.

Wednesday felt surrounded by idiots — and not in the good way.
“So absolutely not, Tyler. Use your brain,” she said, glaring.
He kept smiling. “You’ll think about it?”

She sighed.
Enid and Lucas were staring at her with unsettling intensity.

“Fine,” she said reluctantly.
Enid squeaked, Lucas applauded.

Tyler smiled and leaned in to kiss her —
Except his phone started ringing.
It was his dad.

He didn’t answer, but then a loud knock came at the dorm door.
They’d made way too much noise, and his dad had probably called the principal, guessing where he’d gone.
The door was locked, but it wouldn’t hold for long.

Tyler and Lucas rushed back to the balcony and started climbing down.
Tyler stopped halfway, climbed back up a bit, and leaned toward Wednesday.

“So you’ll think about it?” he asked again very seriously.
“Oh my god, yes she totally will and—” Enid started.
“Enid, stop. And I will,” Wednesday lied, knowing he’d spend half an hour apologizing tomorrow.

He smiled and kissed her just as the dorm door began to creak open under force.
Then he joined Lucas, and she watched them disappear into the night.
Romeo and Juliet vibe.

Enid rushed to the door, trying to explain to the principal that nothing had happened — they were alone, playing cards.
The principal, exhausted and lacking evidence, let it go.

Once she left, Wednesday had to endure Enid’s overexcited squealing while insisting she was absolutely not going to “think about it.”

Tyler, on his part, got yelled at by his father — but he didn’t care.
The Plan Of The Year had worked.

He fell asleep quickly, still smiling at his luck.

And woke up the next morning deeply ashamed.
What was he thinking ??

(Though he couldn’t help but smile — who knows, maybe one day...)
