Work Text:

Lavender Brown sometimes liked to walk around Muggle London. She lived in the Wizarding district of the city, but liked to see the lights and the cars and all the things different from the magical world she belonged to.

Lavender was interested in many things that most other witches and wizards didn’t respect very much. Like divination, which many considered to be too soft a branch of magic, if not usually outright fake.

So when she saw a Muggle magic shop, Mystic Market, she was interested. There was a subset of Muggles who had overlapping interests with her, on things like divination and spiritual balance. Things other wizards generally considered too superstitious to consider, rather than real magic.

Lavender opened the door a bell jingled and was immediately hit by the smell of incense lightly burning, pleasant and unoffensive. At the other end of the store there was the check out desk where a cute ginger girl sat by the register. The ginger woman, the owner, Lavender assumed, smiled and waved her in.

The walls of the store were filled with a section of different things; such as multicoloured crystals, candles of multiple sizes and colours, sticks of incense, a variety of teas, bundles of sage, and books. Books about star signs and charts, books of palm and tea leaf readings, dream interpretations, books about meditation, books about the Goddess and modern neopaganism, etc.

Lavender had found a section with multiple packs of tarot cards and had become to browse those when the woman from the desk came up behind her. “Can I help you?” the store owner said kindly.

Lavender was startled slightly, having not heard her walk behind her, and she blushed as she turned around to see the ginger woman’s freckled face and blue eyes looking patiently at her. “No, I’m good, thank you,” Lavender said. “I’m just looking at the tarot cards, you have some nice designs.”

“You like tarot cards? How long have you been using?” the woman asked, smiling curiously.

“Oh, long time now, since I was in school,” Lavender said, her checks still warm as the woman moved closer to her. She knew she had to be careful about how much she said, the woman was clearly a Muggle.

“Well, I’ll be at the desk when you are ready,” the owner said before walking back over to the register. Lavender continued to browse for a few more minutes before finding a pack of cards she liked and heading to the check out.

Lavender went to pay for her cards, only fumbling with the Muggle money a little, which got a light laugh out of the ginger. What’s your name?” the woman asked as she held Lavender’s receipt.

“Lavender,” she answered.

“Lavender,” the woman responded, giving another chuckle. “Well, my name is Hazel.” Hazel handed her Lavender’s receipt, causing Lavender’s to blush again when their hands touched. “Well, have a nice day, Lavender,” Hazel said.

When Lavender walked out of the store she looked down at the receipt, her heart skipping a beat when she say a phone number written on it. Well, she’s going to have to ask a friend to let her borrow their phone, and teach her how to use it.

Notes:

I love the idea of HP witches and wizard interacting with Muggle New Age and neopagan subculture.

Lavender likes gingers, she doesn’t care whether they are boys or girls.
