Remus shivered yet again.
It was freezing outside, far too cold to be out, let alone out without any sort of winter clothes or layers. In the distance, the warm, glowing light of the Potters’ front porch acted as a guiding star for the trembling 17 year old.
He’d slipped into the night when his house was again too loud, tensions growing too high for the meant-to-be-peaceful holiday season. He didn’t originally have a plan, he didn’t have his wallet, but he wouldn’t have money even if he did bring it.
So he wandered aimlessly for an hour or so, before remembering what James had said, the last day before winter holidays. He had extended an invitation to his house to everyone, knowing at least Sirius and Remus were likely to have a miserable Christmas back where they lived. So he swallowed his pride and walked down the cold, desolate streets until brick buildings faded into barren trees and paved road became the gravel path of the countryside.
He now made his way up James’ driveway. Through the living room window, he could see such a stereotypical, Hallmark movie looking family scene, and if he were honest, it made him envious. Jealous. As much as he tried not to let it show, tried not to indulge those thoughts, James’ whole homelife made him jealous. Why did he get a perfect family? Why did he get a nice house, and money? It stung.
The Potters were in their living room, around the blazing fireplace. Sirius was already there -- practically an honorary Potter by now -- playing chess with James; Fleamont and Euphemia sitting on the couch chatting, mugs of something warm cradled in their hands. The whole moment looked so warm and inviting that it almost made Remus feel wrong for intruding.
With a trembling hand, he knocked on the door.
The door was opened with surprising speed by Fleamont, as if they were expecting someone at this hour. As if they were expecting him.
“Ah, Mr. Lupin,” Mr. Potter exclaimed merrily, “come in, come in- James, Remus is here!”
Remus entered the foyer shyly, kicking off his boots and nodding to Fleamont gratefully.
“Good evening, Mr. Potter, thank you for letting me in,” he muttered, avoiding eye contact. It wasn’t like him to be shy, but he figured since he was intruding, the least he could do was act shameful about it.
With his usual energy, James came bounding into the front hall.
“Hiya, Moony! Happy Christmas,” he said brightly. “Mum! Is the kettle still hot? Come on in, I’ll make you a cup.”
Remus can feel his mood instantly lighten; James’ cheerfulness infectious. He follows him into the kitchen, Sirius trailing close behind.
Once given tea and a spot on the couch, Remus settles easily into the dynamics and vibe of the evening.
“Sorry for intruding,” he apologises quietly, only for all 4 other voices to quickly and sternly (yet kindly) shut him down and reassure him that he’s more than welcome here.
Remus could argue that this may be the best Christmas eve he’s ever had; surrounded by friends who feel more like family than any blood relative ever could. He may not be able to stay with them forever, but being in the moment right now, filled with so much love and security, is more than enough.
