The Loneliness of a God.

Summary:

What happens when a tiny little spirit creature makes Doorman realize just how alone he truly is in this mortal plane.

Notes:

This is a sort of art trade that ive been chewing on between kinktober chapters since the 12th... IM FINALLY DONE OH MY GOD.

Work Text:

It was a cold and gloomy night in the Cursed Apple, rain pitted against the window as chilly air threatened to freeze it over. The Doorman was currently sitting in his bed, sipping a mug of tea, and reading a book with a fire lit in his fireplace. One that shouldn’t be possible in such an apartment but the Baroness bent and contorted to his will. The smoke drained from the fireplace into a new realm, though he made sure the matter would be returned to this world eventually, just elsewhere. Somewhere less bothersome.

Doorman would be halfway through his book as he heard a thud, deciding to ignore it until it was followed up by the sound of what was like little claws scratching against the glass of his window. How bothersome…. He loathed to put down his book but whatever pest it was seemed intent on ruining his evening. Great, He’d walk out to see whatever the disturbance was. He thought his room was far too high up for anything like raccoons, and a bird would be unable to claw at the window like this creature had. How strange indeed.

Doorman opened the door, looking around and seeing nothing before looking down at his feet and seeing a pitiful looking bat. It was most definitely bleeding, it seemed exhausted as well. Perhaps it was trying to get through the glass to the warmth inside, creatures like these weren’t exactly known for their comprehension of things such as glass. He’d groan softly, what an annoyance. He however couldn’t find it in himself to leave the thing out to die, picking it up and carrying it inside. Shutting the door behind him and shivering at the air that had come in from outside, heavens, how did the little creature not have frostbite?

“Let's get you warmed up little guy.”

Doorman stated rhetorically, carrying the little creature who seemed too weak to fight its way out of his grasp to the bathroom. Running warm water in the sink and waiting for it to fill up, when it did he would gently set the bat in the warm water. It seemed startled at first until it realized how nice the warm water was to which it relaxed. Doorman would check that the water was shallow enough for it to keep its little head above the water before leaving it there to soak for a moment. Opening a door to the library of the Baroness, which was presently closed to guests, to find a book about different species of animals. He had read it before, recalling that the author was quite fond of bats and they had their own section in it.

He’d come back, skimming through the book to the section on bats, looking through it for whatever species it looked most like. Blinking as it almost looked like a Flying Fox mixed with a Vampire Bat, which was peculiar as neither species was found anywhere remotely near the Cursed Apple. Looking down at the little creature that almost seemed to be using the water to wash itself off and chuckling softly.

“Are you some sort of spirit creature?”

“Chirp”

“Oh… Alright then?”

Doorman chuckled softly at the way the creature almost responded to him? Perhaps it was indeed some sort of spirit creature. He would have to ask Mina if this was one of her bats that got lost, she would be worried sick if it was one of hers. He’d notice that one of the creature's wings was very clearly broken, moving a hand to gently look at it, earning a sort of growl or well… More like a squeak of pain from the creature, frowning softly and reaching a hand to open his cabinet, grabbing a first aid kit and looking through it. It would have what he would need for a creature of this size.

“Let's get you cleaned up and get your wounds dealt with, then perhaps get you fed.”

“Chirp”

He’d chuckle softly at the chirp of approval at the being fed part, moving to gently help it clean off its wounds. Frowning at how many it had, whatever had gotten it did not want to let it go. Getting it as clean as he could before pulling it out of the bath and starting to dry it off. Grabbing medical tape and a few wooden dowels from the kit, using them to make a kind of splint for its wing and wrapping it in a towel. Grabbing it and carrying it to the kitchen via one of his doors. Humming as he looked through a fridge and finding a fruit cup, grabbing it and going through a door back to his room. Moving to sit by the fireplace and setting the bat by it to warm up, loosening the towel a bit and offering it a fruit cup.

“You look like a sort of fruit bat? Perhaps this might be to your liking… Though thinking about it, if you're one of Mina’s bats you would probably prefer blood wouldn’t you?”

Doorman’s question would be answered when the bat stared reluctantly at the fruit cup, turning to look back at him as though he was out of his damn mind. It let out a chirp at the mention of blood, him rolling his eyes as he looked at the little thing. Deciding to be lazy this time and just summon a bottle of blood from a portal door. If this was a simple spirit creature it wouldn’t be able to handle his divine blood, or perhaps it would get hooked on it and he didn’t want to return a bat to Mina that was now addicted to his blood.

Doorman poured some blood into the lid that was on the fruit cup, humming as he watched the bat eagerly go for that instead. That was apparently exactly right. This furthered his assumption that this was most likely one of Mina’s bats. He’d have to catch her as she went to open her shop for the day. Chuckling softly about how peculiar the idea of a non-nocturnal vampire was, though it wasn’t like many people were shopping for a new fashion statement in the dead of night. Mina was however in enough demand that she most likely could get away with that if she had decided to change her schedule to be more aligned with her new life.

Doorman sighed softly, looking at the little thing feeding and wondering why it had chosen to come here while being so clearly hurt. He couldn’t even come up with an answer as to how it got up here in the first place. That didn’t matter now, he would ensure the creature was safe and warm until he found its home. The Baroness welcomed all guests after all.

Doorman would eventually go to bed, the little creature would cling to him. Resting on his chest as the two rested through the night quite peacefully. The next morning however would eventually come, the sun peeking into the shaded alleyways of the Cursed Apple. Illuminating all for the day. He’d shower and get ready far earlier than usual today, he had an errand to run before he could get to work after all. The walk to Mina’s shop would be quick, him arriving and knocking on the door. The bat currently resting on his shoulder. It wasn’t surprising that it was still asleep, it was recovering from a lot after all.

The door would open to reveal a very obviously tired Mina, her rubbing her eyes as she blinked sleep away. Still being in what she slept in presumably, a silk robe that was black and embroidered with her logo. Eventually once she was fully awake she would look at Doorman, her brows furrowing before her eyes drifted to the bat with the little splint, that would immediately cause them to soften.

“Who is this?”

“I’m not sure… I was hoping you would’ve been able to enlighten me… Is it not one of yours?”

“No. Mine are all red, is that a spirit creature?”

Mina’s statement would be furthered by the swarm of bats who all came to see what the commotion was at this hour. She’d groan softly as quite a few of them found their spot on her shoulders, a few more resting on top of her head.

“I suppose it is? It’s unlike any other bat I've seen, the species it appears to be a mix of aren’t even native to New York.”

“I see. Likely some type of spirit creature then yes… Have you gone to the Barony? If you came to me I assume it’s some sort of vampire. Perhaps they would have an answer for you.”

At the mention of the Vampiric Barony the little bat would growl, clawing into Doorman's shoulder and earning a wince from the man. He supposed that was a no to that.. The creature seemed to have a sort of hatred for it. That could only lead him to think of one vampire who also felt that way. But surely not? Drifter was never one to have a pet and even if he did, why would it fly to the Baroness when injured? Surely he was not the person that Drifter trusted the most, but usually spirit creatures follow their owners deepest thoughts. How peculiar.

“With how much that thing hates the Barony you’d think it was Drifter’s.”

Mina would chuckle softly and Doorman would nod, before shaking his head to rid himself of that line of thought, it was silly and likely very implausible. He’d sigh softly, it most certainly was connected to the Drifter in some way but the question that left was:

“I suppose it must be, but why would his spirit creature come to me instead of him?”

“Cause it knows what's best for it?”

At that the Doorman would laugh, it was true he most certainly couldn’t imagine the Drifter of all people bandaging the little bats wing. He never seemed to show that kind of care for anyone or anything, it would be unlike him to change for a pet. He wouldn’t be surprised if the bat had found Drifter and clung to him. Drifter wouldn’t be bothered to shoo it away and they would become bonded. That idea earned a soft chuckle from the man. Drifter growing a soft spot for a creature he never even wanted to keep around in the first place? Quite amusing indeed, mildly implausible, but amusing.

“In all seriousness spirit creatures only follow the desires of whomever they bond with. If the little guy does belong to Drifter then perhaps he’s fond of you.”

“Drifter? Fond of me? The last time we talked he threatened to kill everyone in my hotel.”

Doorman left out the part where he might’ve been taunting him prior. What Mina didn’t know couldn’t hurt her after all. Though thinking about it perhaps he was? Him and Drifter weren’t particularly the closest but they’ve had quite a few interactions over the centuries, some less bloody than others. Though most were quite filled with carnage… Perhaps that was what Drifter was fond of about him if anything? Their shared violence over the years? But those days were long behind the Doorman, opting to observe humanity through a more helpful job. Besides, Drifter disdained him for that. He recalled the look of hatred that glinted in his eyes the last time they had fought over Doorman leaving behind the life of bloodshed. He most certainly wasn’t fond of Doorman, no matter what his spirit creature does.

“I’m almost certain Drifter is more fond of the viscount than me.”

He’d muse, earning a quirk of a brow from Mina.

“Now I know you’re most definitely lying. Perhaps you don’t think he’s fond of you but there might be more to him than meets the eye. From what I know from being around him is that he tries to pretend he doesn’t care, and that he’s fine with a life of drifting around with no name or home but sometimes I see the way he looks longingly at the warmth of the Baroness. Almost like a lost puppy, it's kind of sad.”

She’d move a hand to pick up one of her bats scratching it behind the ear and earning a content little chirp from it.

“Regardless, that isn’t one of mine, good luck looking for the little one’s home Doorman.”

She’d smile warmly at him before closing the door and disappearing back into the shop, most likely to go back to sleep for a few more hours.

Doorman would return to the Baroness with the little creature perched on his shoulder contently. Feeling quite fatigued but he had work to do, not being entirely sure what he should do with the creature while he worked before recalling something that he had to get to accommodate certain spirit creatures. He’d summon a large cage into his room, it having far more than enough room for the bat. It was made to accommodate a multitude of spirit animals regardless of size.

“I’m sorry but you must stay here while I work… I do not know that you will behave while I'm gone.”

Doorman chuckled softly, the bat seeming to huff in protest. He’d decide that he wouldn’t be heartless today however, going to grab a pillow and setting it in the cage on the floor, knowing the bat most likely wouldn’t be able to rest the way it normally would in this state. Gently setting the bat down on the pillow before stretching and finally deciding that he should in fact get ready for the day. Closing the cage and walking over to his dresser, grabbing a uniform and walking to his bathroom to change into it. He’d walk out, looking over at the bat and smiling softly at it, it had drifted off to sleep near immediately it seemed… Poor thing. He’d have to come back while on his break to make sure it was fed.

The first half of the day would pass by fairly uneventfully, he had hoped that someone from the Barony would stop in today. The bat seemed to have a clear distaste for the Barony but that wasn’t entirely uncommon amongst vampires in it. Perhaps he would have to take it there just to check to see if anyone could recognize it. He wished he didn’t have to make the trip there, in truth never liked them either. They were so… snobby, even for his tastes and he dealt with the uber wealthy every. single. day. That was one of the few things he could agree with Drifter on… Weird. Why was he thinking of him at the moment? Nevermind that he needed to go make sure the bat was alright and see if it needed to be fed or not.

“I’m back.”

Doorman stepped into his room, though he didn’t hear any sort of chirp nor acknowledgement in response to his presence. Starting to worry as he rushed over to the cage, immediately seeing that it was fine, still breathing just in a deep slumber. Good… He couldn’t have some little bat ruining his streak of caring for every guest that sought refuge in the Baroness. He had to admit the little creature was quite cute… It appeared to be so at peace regardless of how most spirit animals would be on edge in a situation like this, separated from their owner and hurt. Perhaps the little bat didn’t have an owner it was bonded to? He hadn’t considered that but it was a possibility. Though there weren’t many spirit creatures that lacked an owner. And those that lacked one were often swept up by FairFax industries to be studied or sold. How strange indeed…. Perhaps that was how the thing got injured? Trying to escape capture. So many mysteries to be considered about the little thing, it was quite thrilling!

Doorman would be drawn from his thoughts by the softest little grumble, it appears he had awoken the bat. What a shame he didn’t intend to interrupt its slumber. Chuckling at the way it seemed to rub at its eyes in a similar fashion to the way a human would.. Perhaps it had been bonded and a vampire slayer had found its owner… That was… a saddening thought. What if the little creature was all alone now... That didn’t matter, he would turn his attention to unlocking the cage and opening it. Chuckling at how the bat immediately moved to climb onto his arm, noticing the way it immediately tried to bite into his wrist to feed. Now that wouldn’t do.

“Now, now little thing, don’t go biting off more than you can chew. I wouldn’t want you growing addicted to my blood, how would I return you to your home if I did that? Well if you even have one.”

Doorman would muse, holding the bat more or less by its scruff and summoning a bottle of blood and a small little bowl that was meant for dipping sauces. It appeared to be a decent portion size for such a small creature however. Though after the third bowl he had poured for it he had realized that no, it in fact was not a good enough size for the creature. Perhaps he would need to just give it the entire bottle. He’d chuckle to himself at that however, that certainly wasn’t possible, the bottle that held the blood was of similar dimension to a wine bottle. It was bigger than the bat itself.

“Where is all of that blood even going, you greedy little beast?”

Doorman teased while pouring it a fifth bowl, finding this so amusing. Perhaps the only blood that would satisfy the little bat was his own? That would however be his last ditch effort, he doubted it would ever get to that point. The creature would have to drain the Baroness of her entire supply of blood to get him that desperate.

“I had a few second thoughts that you were Drifter’s earlier but if you’re still this hungry you must be his.”

Doorman chuckled softly before pausing and staring at the thing blankly for a moment.

“If you’re his and you were this injured…. Is Drifter…?”

Had he been injured or worse killed? The thought should’ve filled him with joy but it didn’t. For some strange reason it filled him with a sort of worry and dread. For as much as they bantered and fought he trusted Drifter more than any mortal, they had known each other for centuries and he was by far the most tolerable of the vampires. Had he died it wouldn’t have been without a fight. The fact that he hadn’t heard anything about it was reassuring in a sense. He must be alright, he’d just need to wait for him to come and pick up this little spirit.

“Who am I kidding, Drifter wouldn’t let himself die, such a wretched beast would fight tooth and nail to keep living. And even had he died half of New York probably would’ve gone with him. We just need to wait for him to come back for you I suppose, well assuming you're his.”

The creature would chirp at him, having noticed that he was clearly worried. Such a delightful creature really, Drifter was hardly deserving of such a sweet little thing. Though he shouldn’t put all of his eggs in one basket, perhaps he would visit the Barony to see if anyone had put out a notice of a missing spirit creature. Just to be safe, if anything. He hardly wanted the Barony to try to accuse him of stealing someone's spirit creature when all he was doing was trying to nurse it back to health.

“I must get back to my work, was that enough for you?”

To which he would earn a satisfied chirp as it pushed the bowl away from itself. How amusing, the thing was so adorable. He would be sad to see it go, but he knew better than to keep a spirit creature away from whomever it was bonded with for too long. Perhaps he will put out flyers after he finishes his work tomorrow… Yes, that would surely bring some type of result. If anything he might at least get a call from Fairfax Industries about it if they were the ones who were trying to hunt it down. He would most certainly have to give them an earful on their treatment of spirit creatures.

Doorman would start to stand up though before he could the bat would cling to his sleeve, climbing up it and eventually finding its way to his cap. He’d hum with amusement as it made its way underneath his cap and seemed to settle there. The damned thing was annoying with the amount of work he had to do to find its home but the creature had endeared itself to him. He supposed it wasn’t the most wretched thing he had ever encountered… Perhaps if it no longer had a home he could keep it, he did on occasion find himself feeling lonely. But those moments were fleeting truly, though it might be nice to have a spirit creature to sit with him as he read. Perhaps it would enjoy being pet idly. It was a nice thought, maybe he would need to get a spirit creature of his own even if he did find the bats owner.

Doorman made his way back to his station at the front desk, the bat still peacefully sleeping atop his head. The weight of it was somewhat comforting, it felt far more heavy then a creature of its size should be though he supposed they were kindred in a way, he made no sense from a mortals perspective either and it was simply pointless for them to try to understand either of the two. That was the one thing that amused him about Fairfax, they tried so desperately to understand things that were simply beyond them.

Though eventually his shift would end and he would start to make his way to the Barony, figuring he could ask around and get some sort of answer. He’d let the bat stay under his hat, having not been bothered to change out of his work uniform. Why would he anyway? They weren’t important enough to deserve such a luxury. When he would arrive he would be met with the stench of overly strong perfumes and colognes that were a decade out of style at minimum. The bat would stir at their arrival, it likely smelled it too, it was over powering. It almost hid the reek of iron and death from whenever they had the chance to feast. It was quite dreadful… He’d ask around about anyone missing a spirit creature though he received one of the same few answers every time.

“Not that I'm aware of, no.”

“Perhaps… I’ll ask around.”

“Like any of us would be so irresponsible to lose such a precious companion.”

And so Doorman left the Barony with more questions than answers, and a renewed hatred for the Barony. He wouldn’t be going back there any time soon unless he was requested to honestly. He was left slightly confused at how such a little creature could have such a resounding hate for the Barony and yet nobody seemed to be aware of it… It was strange, were Drifter to have some sort of spirit creature the Barony would’ve known, they’ve been trying to catch and dispose of him for about as long as he’s been turned… He’d feel the bat stirring under his hat again, taking it off and allowing the thing to crawl onto his shoulder since the sun had set a while ago, sighing softly and looking over at it.

“You are quite the mystery, nobody at the Barony was even aware of your existence. As far as vampiric spirit creatures go you appear to be quite unique.”

Doorman sighed softly, the mention of the Barony earning a growl from the little thing which he would chuckle at. Oh, how he needed such amusements to make his work at the Baroness bearable. Perhaps he could just… Stop searching, what would the harm be? No, he mustn't think like that, it was cruel to take such a creature away from its home for so long.

“Well, let's get back to the Baroness so I can start making those flyers, hmm?”

“Chirp.”

“Well aren’t you just an agreeable little thing.”

Doorman would muse with a soft chuckle, finishing his walk back and sighing softly once he reached the Baroness. Creating a door that led to his room, and groaning contently as he was finally allowed to unwind for the day. The spirit creature would surely be able to handle ten minutes without those flyers being made… He’d yawn softly, kicking off his shoes and nestling into his bed, the bat gliding down gracefully next to him. The little thing couldn’t fly and yet that didn’t seem to bother nor stunt its resolve any. It would cuddle up to him shortly after he had gotten comfortable. Him smiling softly down at the thing and moving to scratch behind its ears gently. It would seem to practically melt at that, and wasn’t it just adorable. His resolve to find the things home was rapidly dissolving… He’d need to get those flyers up tomorrow night at minimum. Groaning as he’d have to get up, the bat clinging to his sleeve as he walked over to his desk, it slowly climbed up onto his shoulder.

“Alright, let’s get started, yeah?”

And with that Doorman would start his work on making a stack of flyers, grabbing the needed supplies and carving a stamp to make the resemblance of the bat so he could easily make multiples without having to worry about sketching out the bat on each one. So that’s what he’d spend his entire night doing, stamping each piece of paper with a bat before writing. ‘Lost spirit creature looking for its home!’ and in finer text ‘If it belongs to you or a friend come to the Baroness for further information.’ He figured this would be good enough. Meanwhile the entire time the little creature would be sitting on his shoulder, seeming nice and comfy there as he worked.

“Are you even aware of the amount of effort I’m putting in to find your home right now?”

Doorman chuckled softly, though the little creature would chirp at him and rub its head against his neck, perhaps his efforts didn’t go unappreciated after all. He’d groan softly as he saw the sun peaking out from behind his curtains… Had it really been that long? Perhaps he would need to take the day off, and have one of his followers fill in for him. He’d telepathically give the orders before getting up and setting the bat onto one of his pillows before walking to his bathroom and changing into something a bit more comfortable. A little nightgown that he would admittedly never let anyone see him in but how could he sleep in anything else really? It was so sinfully comfortable. He’d slip into the cool sheets, swiftly finding himself getting comfortable before noticing a cool little creature cuddling up to him. Peaking an eye open to see the little bat cuddling up to his chest, it very clearly seemed to be appreciating his warmth. It was strange that it was so cold.. How had he never noticed this before? Perhaps it was the amount of layers he normally wore. That could be very plausible.. And it would’ve made sense for the little thing to have been cold when he found him. It was practically cold enough to snow outside, he was surprised it hadn’t yet.

“Poor little thing here, let's get you warmed up.”

Doorman mused softly, pulling up the blankets a little more so the bat would be covered aside from its head. Hearing it let out a soft almost purr like noise and assuming that meant it was quite pleased with this. That was good, he most definitely could relax like this… Perhaps he didn’t need to sleep, but right now the temptation was far too strong. He drifted off to sleep with the slowly warming little bat curled up against his chest and they both rested for a long while. Perhaps the two had both longed for company and not had any in a long while. One yearned for home and the other yearned for someone who could level with him. Though not all good things could last forever, this he knew. In his dreams visions of the bat finally going back to its loving home came to him. They filled him with a sort of grief, a grief of the company he had once shared with it. However they also filled him with a bittersweet sense of joy, seeing a creature he cared for returned to people who loved it likely far more than he ever would be able to.

Doorman awaked with a sort of sadness he hadn’t felt in a long while. The feeling that had once filled him at the passing of long time friends before he had decided it was best to keep a safe distance from any mortal. He needed to get up and put out those flyers, but as he tried to stand something stopped him. The soft little grumble of a creature that was being disturbed from its slumber… Perhaps he could wait a little bit longer, for the bats sake obviously. It was still recovering and needed its rest, and he didn’t want to wake it at the moment. It appeared to be so peaceful, he almost envied that… He would need to take off the splint to make sure there were no infections and its wounds were healing properly. He wasn’t aware of how to care for spirit animals properly or if they even healed at the same rate as normal ones? Did being away from whoever they were bonded to weaken them? If it did he would most definitely need to get the little creature back to its home soon… If it didn’t have one would it return to the spectral plane…? How he wished the thing could talk, he had so many questions that needed to be answered.

Eventually though the little creature would awaken, it rubbed its face into his chest and let out a soft yawn. It was oh so adorable how he wished he could just pinch its little cheeks. Though he feared if he did he might hurt the thing, it still seemed so fragile… What a dilemma he was facing.. He would power through however, he has practiced self restraint throughout the centuries, this would be no different.

Though the little thing would eventually stir from its slumber, it being some time around lunch, humming softly and he gently petted it. It was nice honestly, just lying there and petting the little bat who seemed to be eating up every second of the attention. It let out soft purr like noises which he knew definitely shouldn’t be possible for a bat… Closing his eyes and groaning at the thought of having to get up and hang the flyers he made. Perhaps he could eat a bite first.

“Let's get you fed and clean those wounds before I go put out the flyers, yeah?”

“Chirp!”

Ever agreeable the little thing climbed up onto his shoulder, being careful not to scratch him as it did. He would get up eventually, walking over to the little kitchenette he had in his room and grabbing a few bottles of blood from the fridge, it was usually empty but the door of it connected to any one of the fridges in the Baroness. Quite convenient for him honestly. Grabbing a larger bowl and filling it with blood before putting it down on the counter and watching the bat climb down his arm to get to it. He’d chuckle before getting all of the ingredients to make a sandwich, humming as he started putting it together and being more than content to just eat in silence with the little bat.

Eventually though the two would finish with their respective meals, but Doorman had one last thing he wanted to check before the two left to put out the flyers. Gingerly moving to unwrap the bat's wing and seeing that while it was still a bit misshapen the wounds were mostly healed over aside from a few less sightly scars. He was just glad that the little thing was okay and seemingly had no infections. Though he would grab his first aid kit, using a little alcohol pad to clean off some of the scars which needed a bit more time to heal and grabbing new wooden dowels, using them to brace the wing back into a more natural shape before bandaging it up again.

“There we go, good as new.”

The bat would simply lick his hand in return, how adorable. Doorman would leave it there on the counter for a moment, going over to his dresser and grabbing more casual clothes to wear while he put up the flyers. Making sure to grab something with a large pocket in case the bat wanted to come with. He had a feeling it would and he most certainly didn’t want the thing getting frostbite from the cold air. Eventually retreating to his bathroom to change into the clothes, coming out once he was done and looking over at the bat with a soft smile, offering his hand to it.

“Are you coming with me to put out flyers?”

Doorman’s question would be answered as the bat scurried up his arm. Quickly finding the collar of his jacket and hiding underneath it, seeming almost ready to brave the cold winter air. He’d go to grab the stack of flyers before making a door to the outside, shivering as he quickly stepped onto the street. He would need to stop by the hardware store to get some nails. He had retrieved a hammer but for some reason they did not have any nails. It was a trivial issue, a mild annoyance at worst if he was honest but he was loath to be outside any longer than purely necessary. And he was sure the shivering bat on his shoulder thought the same, it curling deeper underneath his jacket. Of course it would favor being on his shoulder instead of in his pocket, why did he even think he would need pockets for it? He’d chuckle softly, nearing the hardware store and being grateful it was so close. Though they still had a long day ahead of them regardless.

Doorman stepped inside the hardware store, savoring the warmth of it and sighing softly. Making his way over to where the nails were and grabbing the cheapest pack and walking to the clerk. He’d pay for them before putting the pack in his pocket, suddenly being grateful for how large his pockets were regardless of the fact that this was not the original intended use for them. He supposed some things did work out for the best after all even if some would consider them a waste.

Doorman spent most of the day walking around the Cursed apple, nailing flyers to posts and hoping that it would bear some kind of result. All the while the little bat sat peacefully under his coat on his shoulder. Shielded from the sun and the cold air. It had snowed while the two were asleep. Not enough to coat the city in a beautiful layer of snow, only enough to clump together in alleyways and leave the streets slick with ice. Bothersome really, it made the whole ordeal much harder than it was originally meant to be, but he would be fine, besides he had put on a pair of boots meant for walking on icy streets.

Eventually his task would be finished and he would make his way back to the Baroness, being grateful to see her warm glow and the ivy that had gone dormant for the winter. Perhaps he should consider hibernating like he used to… Winter was such a miserable time after all. Though as nice of a thought as that was, he knew it wasn’t something he could do. The Baroness couldn’t be left unattended after all.
Doorman made his way into the Baroness, appreciating the warmth of it. The bat also seemed to prefer it as it immediately peaked its little head out to look around. He’d take an elevator up to the level his room was on, stepping out of it and humming contently as he approached his room. Unlocking it and stepping in, immediately shedding his coat and hanging it up on a coat hanger, the bat huffing at the removal of the warmth it provided.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure the room warms up in a moment.”

It was a little chilly after all, the room's heater wasn’t on while he was gone, that would be a waste. He’d untie and kick off his boots before walking over to the heater, turning it on and hearing it immediately hum to life. Knowing that it wouldn’t be enough to swiftly heat up the room. He’d walk over to the fireplace, stacking a few logs into it before grabbing a little bundle of pine straw, setting it atop the logs and lighting a match, flicking it atop the pinestraw and watching as the fire slowly started burning. He’d move to offer a hand for the bat to climb onto humming as the bat gladly climbed onto it and chirped at him. To which he would scratch behind its ears. Being far more than content to sit by the fire like this with the little creature for a long while.

Doorman had stopped paying attention for a moment before feeling two little pinpricks on his hand, huffing as he looked down at the little bat lapping up his blood and rolling his eyes. He figured it would be no harm after all. The more time that passed the more likely he thought it was that the little bat didn’t even have a home to go back to, and he was more than willing to keep it at the Baroness. If that's what the thing wanted after it healed, he would need to find someone who knew more about spirit creatures. Perhaps he could ask Calico, from the few times they had met in passing they had talked about Ava and how she would most certainly outlive Calico. Though Mina would likely be the better choice he had already bothered her about this and he knew she was very busy. Perhaps he could get in contact with Calico and invite her over for tea. She was always delightful company whenever he had the chance to just sit and chat with her. For now though he’d just let the little bat feed as much as it’d like as the two warmed up by the fire. Yawning softly and just continuing to pet it, he most certainly wouldn’t sleep this much normally but he was so tired. The cold weather really takes it out of him.. Especially when he warms up again after spending all day out in the cold. His nose and cheeks tinted red by the chilly air slowly turning back to a normal shade.

“Such an exhausting day, no?”

“Chirp.”

“Would you like to get some more rest?”

In response to that the little bat jumped down and started climbing towards his bed. He’d chuckle softly at that, what a greedy little thing to assume that was where it got to sleep. What if he had decided not to let it sleep there. They both knew however that he was a sucker and would in fact let the little creature sleep wherever it pleased. He’d get up, grabbing a change of clothes and bringing his usual nightgown to the bathroom. Changing into it and stepping out. Chuckling as he saw the bat already sprawled out on the bed, appearing to be quite comfortable.

“Well, didn’t you just go ahead and make yourself comfy.”

“Chirp.”

“Don’t sass me, I can make you sleep in the crate if that’s what you’d prefer.”

To that the little bat would give him the biggest puppy-dog eyes, and how could he say no to that? Sighing softly as he walked over to the bed, getting comfortable under the sheets to which the bat would immediately cling onto him, seeming to bask in his warmth. He’d look down at the little creature, frowning softly. How could he possibly part ways with it? Perhaps if its owner came he could see if they would let him visit the little thing every so often. That would most likely be the best of both worlds, besides, he wasn’t sure he had the time to take care of the little guy.

Doorman would be drawn from his thoughts as the little thing started to purr against his chest. Huh. The little bat really was full of surprises, it always left him guessing about what would come next. Not that he was particularly mad about that though. It was genuinely nice to have something to spare him from every day feeling the same… Perhaps he really did need to find the thing a home if it didn’t have one. He had never grown tired of the Baroness, she always offered something new each day. And yet now he suddenly was? He found himself quite perplexed, was he really tired of the Baroness or did he just need to change something up. A new routine might mix it up. He’d have to give running charity balls another chance. He had done so once and it was a disaster. Perhaps if he was growing stir crazy that would help…?

No, he just needs to rest for now. He can worry about whatever else was plaguing his mind tomorrow for now all he needs to focus on is drifting off to sleep and not crushing the little creature which was snuggled up to his chest. He could manage that for now. He’d manage to fall asleep eventually, though he wouldn’t dream.

The next day Doorman woke up to frantic banging on his door, disturbing him and the little bat who growled softly at the disturbance. He’d gently scratch behind the bat's ear to soothe it before getting up and swiftly changing into his work uniform, not having the time to spare to do his usual morning routine. How bothersome. Eventually he’d get to the door, opening it and seeing his most loyal employee, or well perhaps follower would be a better term for it? Blinking and wondering what the hell could have happened to have them disturbing him at such an ungodly hour, he had checked his clock and it was around two AM.

“Tell me my dear, what's wrong?”

“It would appear that Fairfax has seen your posters… They have documents that say that they have the right to take in any spirit creature that has no home or is lost.”

“Very well then, I had assumed something like this would happen. Walk with me.”

To which he would start walking down the hallway, leaving the bat in the room outside of its cage. The thing seemed perceptive, it would know to hide most likely. Humming contently as his follower trailed shortly behind him. Five paces to be exact. He wasn’t sure why his followers had picked up that strange little habit, he had tried to dissuade it at first but it seemed that they were doing it as a sort of show of their respect to him. However much he appreciated the thought he tried to tell them it was wholly unnecessary, that didn’t stop them though so he learned to ignore it.

“Mortals think that they have a right to things that are above them, it’s so troublesome. Fairfax will be consumed by their own greed sooner or later. They should not be meddling with souls that are best left to rest. Spirit is stronger than they know, one wrong decision and a curse could destroy them from the inside out.”

“Are you going to give them the bat? It seemed like a sweet little thing from what we've seen of it!”

“Of course not. They can’t even prove that we still have it, and without some variety of warrant they will most certainly not be rummaging around. I’m also sure there is a clause in whatever documents they have that specifies that the spirit creature must be a certain size that would be deemed dangerous if improperly handled. I will ask to see their documentation if they don't take me at face value when I tell them its owner had retrieved it.”

“We didn’t even think to ask to see their documentation…” The follower would add meekly, earning a soft chuckle from Doorman.

“Don’t worry about that. I’m sure they sent a specialist and armed guards, if not monster hunters, you would most certainly be right to be afraid of them or doubt yourself. I however am not, they hold no power here.”

Doorman would simply state, being entirely unphased by Fairfax Industries. Though he understood why any human would be. They were the most powerful corporation out there, and a major thorn in his side. This wouldn’t be the first time he had to grit his teeth and tell them to leave. A long time ago they had come and demanded to study the supernatural nature of the Baroness. Wanting to figure out how it maintained so many souls. He of course had to tell them to leave and stop pestering him. They were quite a bit smaller then. More-so like an annoying little mosquito. That's when they picked up that kid prodigy and became the most wealthy company in America, if not the world. That's when they had made a few more attempts to study the Baroness. They had also tried to get permission from the government. Though thankfully that had never gone through with some protesting… He despised Fairfax, but he was no stranger to dealing with them.

He’d eventually arrive in the lobby where a woman in a lab coat stood with what seemed to be a contracted member of the Baxter Society and some contracted body guard that seemed to hold no loyalties. He could most definitely understand why his followers were not thrilled to approach such… Uninviting people. He would have groaned if it weren’t deemed improper to address such “important” people like that. Putting on his best customer service face as he approached the group.

“Yes? What was so important that you felt the need to summon me from my chambers.”

“We saw the flyer, you know that you are required to turn in all spirit creatures to Fairfax Industries within a week of finding them correct?”

“Well! That's most certainly good news, because it's only been.. Hmmm… Two and a half days since the day it found me. And better yet its owner had already come to retrieve it. She was terribly grateful. It was so sweet to see the two reunited. Truly gives you hope for this wretched world.”

“Give up the bullshit Doorman. Fairfax has had its eyes on you for decades. So has the Baxter Society.”

“What? Little old me? Are you sure you have the right person, I am simply a humble servant of the Baroness. Nothing more, nothing less.”

Doorman would smile through gritted teeth, noticing the way the woman glared at him, and seemed to be sizing him up. He had known that at some point he had fallen under the radar of Fairfax Industries, but he was not in fact aware the Baxter Society had also taken notice of him. How amusing! He would hardly consider himself a monster, well, in this life at the very least. In fact he had done his best to be charitable and kind. Most of his present followers didn’t even start out as such. They were people whose lives he saved that had pledged their loyalty to the Baroness for saving them. Truly an endearing lot, he loved them like a family he had never had. It truly was enlightening as to how mortals could grow so close with their families and have circles of people who they loved.

“We know you still have the bat. Give it up before things get ugly.”

“I do not. Though if you’re so intent on that then allow me to see your documentation first. I am almost certain that you would not just be given the permission to search properties willy nilly on false pretenses that there might be some danger there. And even so if there were something truly dangerous wouldn’t you have just left that to your buddy over there from the Baxter Society. Seems far more qualified to deal with such a thing than you.”

“I am qualified, you dick.”

“With all due respect you look like you wouldn’t know how to turn the safety off of a firearm if it was set right in front of you.”

Doorman mused, she by no means was skinny nor frail. But she looked like it had been a long while since she had last left the lab. She was toned more-so than most humans, but that was most likely the bare minimum if she was working with spirit creatures. She would be eaten alive if she was weak. There did however appear to be signs of a time where she was perhaps weaker. Scars being littered all over her, some might even find such a thing to be beautiful. Perhaps he would’ve if this wasn’t someone who worked under such wretched people. It appeared that it had worn off on her as well if personality said anything about it.

The lack of retort Doorman got from that proved that he was indeed most likely correct. Quite amusing to see the dejected look on her face if he said so himself. Regardless she still had to either show him the documentation or she would not be permitted any further into the Baroness, lest he call security. That would get ugly quick.. And he didn’t want the police swarming the Baroness, that would simply be bad for business.

“Either show me your documentation or go back to whence you came. I have work to be doing and I will not be bothered any further over a spirit creature that isn’t even here anymore.”

With that the three would leave, muttering things about ‘this isn't over’ and ‘we’ll be back’ he truly didn’t care for that idea. Dismissing his employee and telling her that he would be taking the day off again and to inform the others, he walked back to his room. He truly needed to make further progress on either finding the things home or officially adopting it.

Doorman stepped into his room, not seeing the bat and being mildly confused. Perhaps it had heard the mention of Fairfax and hidden as he had expected it to. Truly a cunning little creature. He’d smile warmly to himself as he looked around. Eventually finding the little bat curled up behind a row of books in his bookshelf. Yelping in surprise as he picked it up.

“Found you.”

Doorman chuckled softly at the bat that seemed panicked for a moment, before it calmed down. Nuzzling into his thumb and letting out a soft noise that was much akin to a purr. He’d sigh knowing that time was running short and Fairfax would most definitely get a search warrant. If not through normal legal means then through bribery. Something needed to be done fast, he wouldn’t let the little thing fall into their hands.

“I shouldn’t be getting so attached to you little thing.”

He’d observe dryly, frowning as he himself acknowledged that he really shouldn’t. It was a risk that he couldn’t afford to be taking and yet he found himself inexplicably drawn to the little creature who had taken up so much of his time as of recent. Perhaps it was due to his recent longing for someone or something that could be in some way considered an equal to him. One that doesn’t need to worry about death or decay.

Or perhaps he had just grown soft over the years he had settled to observe humanity. Perhaps he was finally picking up on their sympathies and emotions. He understood now why so many considered emotion to be a weakness. But what a delightful one it was. It was truly a troubling dilemma, to decide between trying to distance himself from such feelings or just fully embracing them and allowing himself to feel.

Doorman would be drawn from his thoughts by the bat nosing at his thumb, it appears the little thing had noticed that he was stressed. What was he doing? How had he let the idea of having a companion ruin any fortitude that he previously had? Was he really that pathetic all along? A fledgling god trying to pretend to be far more than he was? Nevermind that, he needed to do some work regardless of the fact that he had taken the day off. Letting the bat climb up his arm as he went to sort through a pile of letters. Cutting each one open with precision with his letter opener before growing lost in thought once more, and before he knew it he had nicked through one of his white gloves. He was off his game more than ever it appeared. Though this action was much to the bats delight, it scurrying down his arm and eagerly cleaning the cut for him.

“I suppose you haven’t eaten yet… Well, indulge yourself then, I wouldn’t want the blood going to waste anyways.”

He’d use one hand to open the remaining letters as best as he could, eventually finishing opening them and starting to go through the stack. The bat was still happily feeding as he did. Though eventually he would hear his phone ringing, groaning and going over to it. The bat climbed up his arm for more stability. He’d pick up the phone, wondering who it could possibly be.

“Hello?”

“Hello, is this the Doorman?”

“Why yes it is.”

“This is the national commission for spiritual matters, it has come to our awareness that you are illegally in possession of a spirit creature that you refuse to hand over to the proper authorities?”

“Oh, that’s what this is about.” Doorman groaned, looking at the bat and snickering silently. “No, as I had told the Fairfax associate, its owner had come to pick it up. I did not get their contact information however.”

“I see you are still going with that story. I hate to tell you this but due to past disagreements with Fairfax they will be issued a warrant to search the Baroness for it within the week. I hope you understand but the risk of vampiric spirit creatures running around without proper care isn’t something that can be taken lightly.”

“I understand, but I assure you there will be nothing to find. This is a colossal waste of time on both ends.”

“I’m sorry for the inconvenience though there isn’t much that can be done about it now… Between you and me I believe Fairfax paid a few people off to get the warrant.”

“I figured as much would occur. I hope you have a good day.”

“You too, good luck dealing with Fairfax.”

And with that Doorman would set the phone down, ending the call. How frustrating, this was the last thing he wanted to deal with at the moment. It’s not as though they would be able to find anything, worst case scenario he would temporarily send the bat to the in-between realm. That he so often sent people too for… Less kind reasons. It would be no trouble at all to hide the bat, but what would be trouble is reassuring his guests that nothing was wrong. He supposed it would be best to have his employees post posters about such matters. How troublesome, he didn’t want to burden them with further work but some things are inevitable. He’d swiftly leave his room, the bat still on his shoulder. Making his way to the employees quarters. Telling them what was going on and to spread the word, giving one of them some extra money to go to Paige's store and grab paper to post about. It wasn’t as though they didn’t have paper but he knew they didn’t have nearly enough to create the amount of flyers necessary. Telling them to write on the flyers that Fairfax was simply observing the Baroness’s spiritual nature and that there was nothing to worry about before heading back to his quarters. He still had bills to pay and file after all. Sighing as he sat back in his desk's comfortable chair finally after having to run around so much. Finding it to be incredibly cozy and looking at the bat which was still comfortable nestled on his shoulder.

“You're far more trouble than it's worth.”

“Chirp!”

The bat would respond, nuzzling closer to Doorman. He’d chuckle softly at it, moving a hand to scratch behind its ear as he used the other to go over the letters. Tomorrow will most likely be a long day. He knew whatever day they would come wasn’t confirmed but he also knew damn well that Fairfax would never pass up an opportunity to obtain a new vampiric creature to study. The thought made him sad, the little thing being stuck in a lab. It being cold and unfeeling. He already knew how the little thing seeked warmth, such a setting would not be suitable for it.

“Don’t worry, as long as I have any say in it, Fairfax won't lay a finger on you.”

That would earn another appreciative chirp, sighing contently as he decided to get as much work done as he possibly could before Fairfax came to sniff around the Baroness. Truly troublesome. Perhaps he should also take a moment to look at the bat's wing. He’d finish the bill he was paying before getting up and taking the bat over to where he had the little first aid kit. Moving it onto his counter and taking off the splint, only to find that the wing was fully healed.

“Well I'll be damned, guess the extra magic in my blood would do that.”

Doorman chuckled softly, watching the bat chirp contently before starting to fly around the room. It was truly heartwarming in all honesty. Seeing the little thing fully recovered and very obviously doing much better. All that was left now was to keep Fairfax away from it and find its home… Or find it a new home.

“Think you’re ready to fly back to wherever the hell you came from?”

Doorman chuckled softly, walking over to the balcony door it hand came to and opening it. Shivering as he felt the cold air outside. The little bat would fly over to him, landing on his shoulder and licking his cheek before flying away. Oh… He didn’t know why he had expected it to stay. But for some reason he had. Perhaps it did have a home it needed to return to. That thought filled him with a sort of bittersweet sadness as he closed the balcony door. It would go to its home now, and Fairfax wouldn’t have expected it to be free now. This was most likely the easiest outcome. That didn’t mean that it still wouldn’t be saddening, he wasn’t sure why it was but it was a kind of sadness he hadn’t really felt before. He had a family here and yet he still felt lonely. Perhaps it was just that same loneliness creeping back. He’d manage it, he had before what would be different now.

A week would pass. A week in which he wasn’t troubled by Fairfax… It was starting to make him grow uneasy… He did not know Fairfax to ever let such a thing go… That was when he finally had a chance to read the news. Multiple Fairfax employees found dead. Mangled beyond recognition, the same way Drifter would have. He felt a sort of relief fill him at the reassurance that Drifter was still alive, well, he felt that way until the familiar sound of clawing at the door could be heard. He knew who it was, only one person could manage to make such an intolerable level of noise.

Doorman would make his way to the door, opening it and being greeted by exactly who he expected to be there. Groaning softly and forcing a curt smile.

“Drifter.”

“Hello Keys, I can see ya’ missed me just from yer expression.” Drifter would taunt, moving a clawed finger to pick at one of his teeth. Flicking a piece of entrail onto the ground in front of the Baroness. Great. Now he would have to have the steps cleaned with how much of Drifter's recent kill was starting to cover them.

“Might I ask a strange question…”

“Hmmm?”

“Do you have a spirit creature?”

“Suppose ya’ could call me the spirit creature, loved tha’ nightgowns by the way. Compliments your complexion.”

“What…???”

“Ya’ heard me mon cher, thanks for tha’ save.”

Drifter would grin lazily at him before moving to press a kiss to his cheek, transforming into that same bat form that was oh so familiar and lingering for a bit so he would very clearly get the message before flying away into the night.

“What the hell.”

Doorman would groan. Not being sure if he was blushing from humiliation or something else entirely… Moving a hand to rub down his face and staring up into the night sky. What a humiliating thing to learn. He had done all of that with the man that he had sworn up and down hated him… He had done all of that with Drifter? And yet all of that was dwarfed by something that sat heavy on his mind.

“Did he just… Kiss me?”

Doorman would rub his hand over where he had kissed, residue of blood and whatever else had left a mark. How would he deal with the feelings that were brought up from this? He didn’t even know what it meant to feel this way. Being incredibly flustered as he walked back into the Baroness. He needed to wash up for the night. Whatever the hell that was would be something he’d need help unpacking later. For now he needed to relax and rest. He had a feeling that regardless of Drifter’s help his troubles with Fairfax were far from over.

He’d do it all again though. Even knowing that it was for Drifter. Especially knowing that it was for Drifter. One of the few people that had been near his equal over the centuries. He’d do it over and over again. For misery needs company, and one person had been his company for a long time. He was grateful even if the two didn’t show care for each other in any sort of normal way, he was grateful. Perhaps the next time they crossed paths he would make Drifter repay him for this. Perhaps indeed. Next time. There will be a next time.
