Proof

Summary:

Wes will get his proof!

Notes:

day 5- polaroid
tw- slight body horror but it's just Danny being a gremlin

Work Text:

Wes has been trying to prove that Danny is Phantom for a year. But no one will listen to him despite how obvious it is! They look the exact same except for the floating white hair, glowing green eyes, pointed ears, elongated limbs, and green tinged skin!

I mean, come one! Wes figured it out after the first two months of Phantom showing up. And even if it wasn’t for the obvious similarities in appearances, Danny disappears from class every time there’s a ghost fight. And Wes has gone to the bathroom after he’s left the room and Danny’s never there!

But when he told a teacher that, all he got was a detention for being ‘creepy’ by following Danny to the bathroom.

But he will succeed! He will not be thwarted! He will prove that Danny is Phantom and then everyone will know that Wes is right. People won’t be able to call him a wackjob conspiracy theorist anymore!

His most recent attempts have been trying to take pictures of Danny and Phantom to see if either of them distorts footage. Unfortunately, while Phantom does glitch out footage, Fenton doesn’t.

So he starts subtly following both Fenton and Phantom around, recording them to see if he can catch a transformation between the two. But they always somehow manage to get away from him before transforming.

And then, of course, because of his stupid luck his camera got fried by a stray ghost ray fired by the Box Ghost of all ghosts! (His phone’s camera had been broken at a previous ghost fight between Phantom and Johnny 13.)

So now he’s stuck with his brother’s stupid old antique polaroid camera. But he will not be thwarted! He will succeed!

So after school, he follows Danny and his friends to the park where he hides behind a tree. He pulls out his phone, thankful that even though the camera doesn’t work, he can still record audio. Unfortunately, because the universe hates him, Danny and his friends aren’t talking about anything ghost related, just the latest Humpty Dumpty album.

They’re about to leave so Wes pulls out the antique polaroid, figuring he’ll at least give it a shot. He ducks around the tree he’s been hiding behind and snaps a quick picture of Danny before ducking back around the tree.

He waits for the picture to develop and then has to fight to keep an exclamation of success from leaving him. Who knew that all he needed to get his proof was an old polaroid?

In the picture Danny and his friends are walking, but while Sam and Tucker look normal Danny’s image is distorted. Danny’s there but superimposed over him is a streak of green in front of his eyes and a blur of white over his head.

Finally, he has proof!!!!

“Hey, Wes.”

Wes freezes, slowly looking up. “Danny.” he says, narrowing his eyes.

“What you got there?” Danny asks, tilting his head to the sides, his friends standing beside him.

“Proof!” Wes says unable to help himself. “I’m finally going to show everyone that I was right!” He shows them the picture, and Danny leans forward to look at it.

“What a nice picture.” he says, a grin stretching across his face.

“Yeah, such an interesting picture.” Sam says. Danny’s grin is still stretching further across his face. Wes can’t look away as Danny’s grin grows beyond normal proportions. Danny’s mouth opens slightly, and that’s too many teeth for a human mouth.

Wes takes a step back, gulping. “Well, I’ll be on my way.” he says.

“Not so fast.” Tucker says, an easy grin on his face. Wes tears his gaze away from Danny for a second to look at the other boy. Tucker holds out a hand. “Can I see it up close?”

Wes clutches the picture to his chest. “Not right now.” His heart is starting to beat fast, but surely it’s just because he’s excited to finally have proof?

Danny steps closer, and Wes’s back hits the tree he’d been hiding behind. “Come on, Wes.” he says, plucking the picture from Wes’s tight grip, it slips right through Wes’s fingers. “Tucker just wants a closer look.” He turns to hand the picture to his friend, but before Tucker can take the picture, green flames engulf Danny’s hand and the picture turns to ash. “Oops.” Danny says, and Wes bites his lip to keep any embarrassing sounds from escaping. “My bad.” Danny says, turning to him.

“Though maybe,” Sam says, “you should ask before taking someone’s picture next time.”

“But—” Wes starts, but Sam cuts him off.

“Afterall, you never know what someone might use it for. It could just be to embarrass someone, or…” she continues, narrowing her eyes at him, “it could be used to get someone into trouble with say… some stupid government agents with a terrible fashion sense.”

“Or,” Tucker says, “it might be used to get someone into problems with their parents. Who knows what someone’s parents might do, if they saw the wrong picture. Don’t you agree, Wes?”

Wes’s mind spins. Are they talking about the Fentons and the GIW? About what they’d do if they saw the picture? But surely they wouldn't do anything, clearly Danny isn’t a full ghost. But now he’s starting to doubt himself. Would something bad happen to Danny if the secret got out? He’s not sure, but he doesn’t think he wants to find out.

“Yeah, I agree.” Wes says, his voice strained.

“Good.” Sam says.

They turn to leave, but Danny turns back to look at him, “See you at school, Wes.”

Wes can’t respond, his throat gone dry at seeing Danny’s head facing in the opposite direction of his body.
