A Million Space Heaters

Summary:

Coat guy and protag hang out, kinda slice of life.

Protag tries to find many ways to cure the cold they're both afflicted by, even if no solution is permanent.

Chapter 1: Chilly

Chapter Text

You arose from bed, to your surprise, feeling quite cold.
The shivers running laps up and down your spine. Putting on a second sweater and still feeling a near constant chill. You almost agree with your housemate, despite the sun’s persistent attempts at whole Earth annihilation. You’re still sitting there, feeling frozen head to toe.

Thankfully, the man with many coats would agree. This is probably quite normal.
Just means you need something more to stay warm, no biggy, the both of you can crowd around the space heater.

See? You’ll be better in no time. You can already feel the warmth from here.

He cautiously turns to see you. Voice rather quiet, only stopped by the occasional chatter of his own teeth.

“C-can we turn this thing up? We d-don’t have to but..”

“I don’t think it’s working v-very well.. The knob is so c-c-cold to the touch..”

He has a point.

Is amazon still running? I can’t think of any other way to get something like this..
Oh wait, the internet’s definitely dead. Been a couple weeks since the sun started killing people. This guy’s the only person you’ve let in. Nice fellow, plus him being here means no getting murdered by that creep outside.

At least find something.

Going across the hall to the kitchen you check everywhere you could. The cabinets have chicken noodle soup packets. You have a stack of hot chocolate and coffee powder packets in the corner-.. Finally some lemon tea bags and a jar of honey.
Everything’s stored away at the top left cabinet. Normally this stuff would prepare you for winter. Lemon tea for working days and hot chocolate when the season’s gloom finally caught up to you.

But the world is ending, coming apart, combusting into violent flames and withering away. You saw what happened to your neighbour. Do you want to die afraid? Constantly paranoid? Never get a chance to use this stuff?

Doubt you could make it to winter anyway so bottom’s up.

Boiling the water.. Since there’s no milk left you’ll just put less than usual. Let it keep its flavour.

Suppose you could put beer instead, but let’s save getting drunk for later.
You stop the kettle before it gets too hot. This’ll be a good temperature.

The floorboards creak as you make your way over.

Seems he’s inched closer to the space heater. Eyes closed, is he asleep?

You give him a little tap on the shoulder “Do you like chocolate?” you hand him the cup.
“Oh, um, yeah, t-that’d be nice.” his fingers slowly grasp the handle, still shaking. He grabs it by the base once he realises it won't burn him.

Some sleep doesn’t sound like such a bad idea right now actually. Still not completely warm but cozy enough.

It’s like you both have your own sun now, since the planet has failed to provide fully functioning bodies for the two of you. Now reliant on humanities inventions, things that are crisping up and fading away into nothing as we speak.
Even while the planet burns, maybe the two of you can make some nice memories in the meantime.
Before your world collapses, leaving the universe alone,
never to be gazed upon again.
