Simple Silence

Summary:

Just a short story where Onigiri cleans Snare Drum’s room.

(Feb 24 2026 update: Contains outdated headcanons! You can still read this for fun, but don’t guarentee some of this stuff to reappear in future fics)

Work Text:

Knock Knock!

“Come on in.”

When the door opened, Onigiri entered. Originally, the hotel-cleaner intended to clean up Snare Drum’s bedroom because they did the same with the other hotel guests’ rooms. However, when they entered, they noticed the small instrument to be sitting near her desk. Looking closer, she had eye-bags on her face as she was staring at her homework.

It’s actually quite impressive that as a college student, Snare also passed an audition for a reality show. Sure, she didn’t get in the competition, but of all the objects in the world, and of the thousands of them who applied to join a show for limitless power, she was one of the 26 who got accepted. And it couldn’t have been done Onigiri! Who not only helped her with her audition, but also happened to be accepted into the show as well!

Though that’s the thing. As much as Onigiri wanted limitless power as Snare Drum does, he’s a bit relieved that neither of them got in. Snare was already pushing herself to do so much work right now, so poor little rice ball couldn’t imagine her if she was both a college student and a reality show contestant. Especially a reality show that’s a long competition.

After a moment of thinking and blankly staring, Onigiri actually came closer to Snare, to which they both made eye contact.

“Oh, sorry!” Snare said nervously. “Don’t mind my desk right now. I know you’re gonna clean up my room, but I need to do work for my classes.”

The jelly donut waved it off, signaling it was okay. Then, she pointed towards the rest of Snare’s room, requesting to clean those parts, to which the drum nods.

While Onigiri was busy dusting the walls, Snare stared back at her desk. Feeling extremely tired, she ends up falling asleep in her chair. Surprisingly, the rice ball was quick to notice that, and quickly switches tasks. She went to Snare Drum’s closet and searched for a small blanket. Then, it grabbed said blanket and placed it on the little drum’s back. As he made sure she doesn’t wake up, he quickly returns to dusting the walls. And as it continued to clean the rest of its friend’s room, it also went ahead to contemplate some thoughts.

She enjoys the time she spends with Snare Drum. Not just because they’ve been friends for years, but also how they remained friends. It was the silent times they enjoyed together the most. About how Onigiri doesn’t need to say many words and Snare immediately knows what they want. Despite being bilingual, Onigiri would much rather speak as little as possible. And barely speaking runs in both their families too. In Onigiri’s case, he and his parents were naturally quiet. Their communications were more physical than verbal. They talk to each other 10 sentences at most per day. Dinner didn’t need a full length conversation, just needing all three members to be present and the food to be tasty.

For Snare Drum’s family, it’s a little more complicated. Their silence is different from Onigiri’s family. And Onigiri doesn’t like admitting it, but it’s not very fond of her parents. They haven’t done anything too horrible to her, but they could be a bit off-putting in ways that are hard to explain. And it knows that because it used to work as a maid for their household. Snare comes from a wealthy family. She’s not rich, especially compared to people like Camera, but her parents have pretty good annual income. Therefore, hiring a maid isn’t out of their budget. And while the two of them saw Onigiri as just a housemaid, Snare Drum saw them as an older sibling, even though she already has three of them. And Onigiri felt the same way about not just Snare, but her two other siblings. (Two instead of three because her eldest brother already left the house before they could meet him)

When Onigiri finally finished cleaning, they looked back at Snare, who was still sleeping. Quietly, they left her room, smiling softly at the little sister they never had.

Notes:

To start off this account, I just decided to go for a simple, tiny story. This was originally gonna be a drabble but then it’d be too much of a challenge considering I need to make it exactly 100 words. But I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
