Do Your Best Ritsuka-san!: The Story Only Cut

Summary:

You are the last Master of Chaldea, tasked with restoring mankind. If you mess up the world is FUCKED. So, no pressure Ritsuka-san.

Story only cut of my F/GO Quest, which can be found here: https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/do-your-best-ritsuka-san-a-fate-grand-order-quest.1139770/

Notes:

So, this is my first time doing this sort of thing. Hope this isn't too redundant and that y'all like this. The earlier chapters are going to be much rougher, due to me writing them a while back. You can also check my Quest on SB to see the choices that drove the story forward, like how the Questers turned Ritsuka into a snarky Tsundere (emphasis on dere), in the Character Creation.

Chapter 1: Prologue: Section 1

Chapter Text

Chaldea Security Organization Compound, Adare Peninsula, Antarctica
January 5th, 2017

"Alright Ritsuka-chan, why don't you sit in this chair right here and put on the VR headset. ~" said the gaudily dressed woman in front of you named Da Vinci, flashing you a cheeky smile.

"Please don't call me that. We don't even know each other that well yet." you reply with a hint of annoyance.

"So, you're open to getting to know me hmm?~ Maybe we can chat over some tea later. See you in 20 minutes Fujimaru-chan!" she titters enthusiastically.

"Don't call me that either!"

You take a seat in a futuristic looking chair Ms. Da Vinci had gestured to earlier and secured the VR headset onto your noggin. Da Vinci then restrains you on the chair, a safety precaution she said, which didn't help your nerves.

This was the final test you had to finish before you could be certified as a Master, a Novice Master, but you would be a master nonetheless. Various diagnostics flashed before your eyes once the headset turned on.

— Base Sequence: Human Genome Confirmed.
— Registered Alignment: Neutral-Good

You try not to get too antsy, sure this was your final test that determined your future at Chaldea, but there was no way you could screw up and be sent back home with nothing but your shame. You worked for only the last 48 hours, but they're the hardest you've ever worked goddamnit!

— Welcome to the Chaldea Security Organization, working for the future of all mankind.

Gods, all you were doing was riling yourself up… Deep breaths Fujimaru, deep breaths…You then wince once you feel a prick on your finger.

— Fingerprint, Voiceprint, and DNA authentication cleared.
— Magical Circuit Assessment Complete. Total of 22 Circuits of average quality found.

That last part didn't sound promising… No. Don't let your mind wander. Deep breaths.

— Username matched. You are recognized as a member of the primates.
— Nice to meet you, Ritsuka Fujimaru. You are our final visitor for today.
— The time limit for this exam is 20 minutes. Defeat the enemy construct before the time is up. Servant Skills, Spells, and Curses can be accessed via your Mystic Code.
— Temporary Regulation: Senior. Contracted Servants: Saber, Lancer, Archer.

This is it. This. Is. It. These 20 minutes would determine your future as a magus. It's now or never. "Time to make it or break it…" you mutter under your breath.

— Activating Heroic Summoning System FATE. Good luck, Ritsuka Fujimaru.

The last thing you hear is the whooshing of machinery as the world goes black.

— — — — —

Your eyes open after much effort and you are greeted by a vivid blue sky devoid of clouds.

You feel soft earth and grass on your back. Running your hands through it, you can make-out individual pebbles in the gritty topsoil. It feels so real for a virtual recreation.

You also feel the distinct sensation of wind on your face. It isn't the harsh wind of the South Pole though. It feels like the mild spring breezes of your hometown Kobe.

You also hear a voice calling out to you in the distance, but you can't make out what they are saying.

"Master!"

Sitting up with a grunt, you try to focus on the voice.

"Master!"

Master?

"MASTER, MOVE!"

In an instant, you are scooped up by someone. Now completely lucid, you watch as the place you were lying in only a moment ago was obliterated by a massive stone golem.

The jagged golem was easily bigger than four meters, and you were surprised something so big could be so fast. It was easily keeping pace with your servant, who was running at break-neck speed.

"A Master with her head stuck in the clouds won't last long, get it together!" it was the voice you heard earlier, and it belonged to the man currently carrying you now.

His features were sharp, almost wolf-like and that bestial look was enhanced by his wild shock of hair. He also happened to be shirtless, which exposed his… rather defined musculature. With a blush, you shook those thoughts out of your head, he was right after all, a Master stuck in lala-land was a dead master.

Taking stock of your surroundings, you see that you were in an open valley with no cover, not good. You also see a distinct crimson spear strapped to the back of your current savior, which identifies him as the Lancer servant currently under contract to you. The spear in question was the legendary Gae Bolg, which identified him as Cu Chulainn, the great Child of Light.

"Lancer, where are Saber and Archer?" you ask him. If you wanted to beat this thing, you would need to use all the members of your temporary team to bring it down.

"You'll see very soon!" said Lancer with a positively wicked smile on his face. Passing a small hill, you see two figures pop out. Another man and a young girl.

The man shoots multiple arrows in quick succession. By his bow you can see that he is an Archer, specifically the Iranian folk hero Arash, another very famous hero. His flurry of shots caused the golem to lose focus for just a moment, but a moment too long. The girl, who by default you knew was Saber, then in an impressive show of strength knocked the golem back several meters, before blasting it with a vortex of air revealing… the legendary sword Excalibur?! This girl is King Arthur??!!

While you are wallowing in confusion, Lancer then sets you down, unholstering his spear and advancing ahead of you. He looks back at you and snaps his fingers to get your attention.

"Look alive Master, what are your orders?"

Your orders huh… racking your brains, you remember that Servants and Masters can communicate telepathically. You decide to use this to give out orders, if it works of course.

Alright, can you all hear me?

Loud and clear, Master.
It's a male voice that is different from Lancer's, a bit more mellow. Must be Archer. Your hunch is confirmed when you see the distant bowman give you a thumbs-up.

Yes Master, I can hear you. You hear a voice of a girl around your age with a distinct British Accent, must be Saber.

Oi Master, stop beating around the bush and give us orders.

You hear Saber gasp. Lancer!

You give the blue-haired spearman the fiercest glare you can muster before returning to the issue at hand.

All stupid and unnecessary comments aside, I want Saber to distract the golem since it's already got its attention on you, do not engage yet. Archer and Lancer, I want you to hit it as hard as you possibly can. While it seems counterintuitive, I've got something planned for you later, Saber.

Lancer flashes you another one of his bestial smiles. "Alright, you heard her you two, let's split some rocks!"

As Lancer rocketed off to join the other two Servants. You closed your eyes and began to slow your breathing.

You need some more information on the golem and the capabilities of your Servant, in order to do that you need to use your magecraft.

You visualize a mirror, the same as the one in your home when you discovered your magus powers. After slowing down your breathing to an acceptable level, you imagine yourself shattering it with a punch.

Your eyes and hand begin to burn and your breath hitches, but you soldier on.

"Activate H.U.D."

You feel heat flow throughout your body, and upon opening your eyes, a familiar overlay of information fills your vision, with a couple of new additions.

'Training Golem: Lv. 50, (90,000 / 100,000 HP)'

'Artoria (Saber): Lv. 60, (10,780 / 10,780 HP), NP at: 100% Charge'

'Temperature: 23.8 ℃'
'User's Condition: OK'
'User's Mana: 200 / 200 MP'
'R1 to access Servant skills'
'O to access Master skills'

This was your Magecraft. Not the magecraft that you learned to use, but YOUR Magecraft.

This is what dragged you into the world of Magi, your Heads Up Display. Well, the Mage's Association had called it "Analysis Magecraft"... but it was unique to you and your mom, so you were going to call it whatever the hell you wanted.

It allows you to learn the condition and mana level of anyone you lay your eyes on. Unfortunately for you, this was the only magecraft you naturally gifted at, and more often than not you had no means of capitalizing on this information, which nearly got you eliminated in the first round of trials.

After your eyes adjusted to its new visuals, you see Saber locked in a deadly tango with the golem. Following your orders to a tee, she was parrying blows and drawing the rocky construct towards Archer.

"Saber, get down!" warned Archer as he let loose a torrent of arrows. Unfortunately, the golem seemed to understand his words and moved to dodge.

Arrows were positively raining down upon the valley, more than humanly possible. The golem tried to outrun the storm of projectiles and it seemed like it was going to make it.

"Not so fast you glorified puppet! Focus. On. ME!"

Lancer had finally caught up to the action and shoved the golem right back into the arrow storm. Giving it no time to recover, he draws back slightly before leaping at the stone construct, swinging his spear in a downward arc.

Upon the hit connecting, the entire massive right arm of the golem disconnected from its torso. It seemed like the golem was done for.

You hear the cracking of stone. There is movement from the golem that you can barely register towards Lancer. He seemed to see it though and made a motion to dodge.

The blue-haired spearman barely manages to get out of range before the golem throws an absolutely massive left cross.

The air shuddered from the force of the blow, and upon inspecting the golem further, you could see that it had changed tremendously.

Its exterior, once rough and smooth, had morphed into jagged rock. Its right arm, through some decently strong magecraft, began to grow back! How does rock even grow?!

You focus on your H.U.D. and read what it was now saying about the golem.

'Training Golem (Phase II): Lv. 65, (65,364 / 100,000), ATK doubled and DEF -25% for 60 seconds'

Phase II huh…

You decide that you need to end this now before the golem can recover.

You imagine a metaphorical controller in your mind's eye, and you picture yourself pressing the right bumper. A list of your Servant's skills pop up in your H.U.D. You see that Saber's skills, Charisma B and Mana Burst A, you remark that they boost her attack for herself. Perfect.

Saber, I want you to activate your Charisma and use your Mana Burst. Once I use my Reinforcement, use your Noble Phantasm.

Affirmative Master.

Saber backpedals away from the golem until she is a fair distance away.

"Lancer, back away. You do not want to be in the blast radius."

Lancer nodded and made his way towards you.

With the spear-wielder gone, the golem redirects its attention to Saber, charging directly towards her.

"I will cut you down where you stand."

The golem stops in its tracks. You also stop preparing to cast your Reinforcement for a moment, focused on her every word. Hell you could even see Lancer glance back when she uttered that previous sentence.

"Sacred Sword, release…" Excalibur was then bathed in a vortex of mana, swirling in an enchanting blue cyclone. You couldn't tear your eyes away…

"Hey uh, Master, you good?"

You jump at the sudden voice coming from your left. It's Archer, who is sitting in the grass next to you.

"When did you get here?" you say in confusion.

"When Saber told Lancer to back off. By the way, weren't you casting Reinforcement on Saber?"

"Erm, ye-yeah." you feel yourself flush in embarrassment, but you ignore that feeling.

Going back to your imaginary game controller, you picture yourself pressing the O Button. A menu then appears, displaying the skills that were present on your Mystic Code. Only one skill was present, Emergency Reinforcement B. Reinforcement is a particularly hard branch of magecraft, so you were glad for the precisely regulated amounts of mana provided by the Mystic Code.

Activating your circuits, you close your eyes and feel your hand heat up. Focusing on Saber, you will the mana to flow towards her. Opening your eyes, you see the telltale lines of successful reinforcement covering Saber's arms in a spindly web.

"Now Saber!"

Saber raises Excalibur over her head in acknowledgement and the sword begins to… glow?

"This light is the Planet's hope…proof of the life that illuminates this world." Oh my god. Excalibur was a fucking laser sword.

"BEHOLD!" A massive torrent of mana erupts from Excalibur, producing a powerful gale from the sheer power produced by the sword and shattering the ground beneath Saber.

God… this was the greatest day of your life.

The golem began to move once more, trying to interrupt Saber. But it was way too far for it to do anything. It wouldn't even get close to her.

Lancer had also made it next to you. "I'm getting the weirdest feeling of deja vu…" Wonder what he meant by that.

"Ex… CALI-" A clump of dirt dislodged from Excalibur's shockwaves went inside of her mouth, causing her to collapse in a coughing fit. The golem was nearly to her position.

…Fuck.

"ARCHER, QUICK SHOOT THE GOLEM!" you say frantically.

"...She'll be fine. Trust me, I've got Clairvoyance." he responded, tapping his head to emphasize his point.

"I-um- fine…" you decide to trust him, Clairvoyance does mean he can see the future right?

You also hear Lancer burst out in hysterical laughter, but you decide to deal with that later. Saber's fate takes a bigger precedence.

With the golem 2 meters away, Saber gets the dirt out of her throat and finishes casting her Noble Phantasm.

"Excalibur!"

Swinging her sword, your vision is filled with golden light, with only your H.U.D. breaking through the solid gold.

Man, you wish you could hear her complete Excalibur chant again, without the hacking coughs this time.

When the light faded, you were greeted with devastation. Everything in the direction of Saber's swing was decimated for up to 20 kilometers. Predictably, there was no trace of the golem to be found.

You were suddenly overcome by wave fatigue, causing you to fall to your knees. You glance at your mana level.

'User's Mana: 90 / 200'

You guess that Saber's Noble Phantasm really took a lot from you.

You collapse onto the grass in a heap.

"Master, are you alright?" Huh, since when did Saber get here? She was quite a distance away from you three.

"Yeah… I'm good… Great job you three." you reply, flashing a thumbs up. "Your Noble Phantasm just took quite a lot out of me. I'll be fine though."

"Huh. That's the first time I've been thanked in a while." said Lancer. "Feels nice."

— Assessment Complete. Elapsed Time: 19:25.8. Please remove your VR headset to finish the exam.

"Sorry guys I've got to leave." You say, a little deliriously yes, but you meant every single word. "Hope to see you guys again."

After you remove your headset, you're greeted by harsh white light. You also see Ms. Da Vinci and her identical looking and sounding colleague. Da Vinci said something about 98.8% Servant compatibility and it being the highest she had ever seen. Was it something good? You didn't really know, it was kind of hard to focus right now.

You feel so tired… So, you decide you're just going to take a little nap…

Mash Kyrielight was walking through the halls of Chaldea. She found it calming, so she made sure to always do this before she went on a mission.

Today was also the day of the orientation for the new recruits. She remembered the last time she saw the new recruits came three years ago. Kadoc-senpai was part of that batch. She hoped that the ones that could overcome their weaknesses would become stronger, just like he did.

"Fou, Fou!"

Mash saw the cutesy privileged lifeform she had been taking care of for the past year, Fou. He was gesturing towards the end of the hallway.

"You want me to follow you, Fou?"

"Fou kyun!"

"Alright, lead the way Fou."

He leads her towards the Spiritron Dive room where she finds… a girl.

She has long, fiery red hair, with some of it held in a side ponytail which was fastened with a hairband. Mash kneeled down to get a closer look at her.

Despite being on the hard floor, she seemed to be sleeping quite peacefully. Mash almost didn't want to wake her up.

"...Mmm. Who's licking me?..."

The mystery girl tried shooing Fou away. Fou dodged her hand and continued to lick her face.

Grumbling to herself, the girl opened her eyes, and after looking at Fou for a couple seconds, the redhead turned her head. She and Mash then met each other's gaze.

Her eyes were beautiful. Vivid Amber. It was seemingly innocuous, just a couple seconds of eye contact.

But this moment would stay with Mash for the rest of her life.

— — — — —

You feel something wet brushing along your face. It felt scratchy, like a cat's tongue.

"...Mmm. Who's licking me?..."

You try shooing whatever was licking you away. It seemed to stop for a little while, before returning with a vengeance.

After waving to no avail for a couple more seconds, you open your eyes in irritation.

Right in front of your face was a fluffy looking creature. You couldn't tell if it was a cat, dog, or squirrel.

"Fou kyun!" Awww. You guess you could forgive this little guy for disturbing you. You also see the shadow of a person looming over you.

Turning your head towards them, you find yourself face to face with a gentle looking girl. She has purple hair and eyes, framed by a pair of glasses. She looks to be your age, or a year younger.

Her gaze locks with yours and suddenly there is only one thought in your mind of this girl.

She was the most beautiful person you've ever seen...

A lump began to form in your throat and you felt your face heat up. Since when did you swing that way? You were pretty sure that you liked boys, but looking at this girl, you weren't so sure anymore… Wait, is she getting closer to you?

"GAH! Personal Space, PERSONAL SPACE!" You exclaim, scrambling up and putting some distance between the two of you.

"Ah! Sorry for disturbing you Senpai!" she replies sheepishly with a slight flush of embarrassment.

Senpai… That had a nice ring to it. But maybe she called everyone that was older than her senpai, so you shouldn't get your hopes too high.

The atmosphere becomes awkwardly quiet for a bit. Realizing that maybe this gorgeous girl in front of you might just be a tad socially awkward, you decide to break the ice.

"*ahem* So umm… I'm Ritsuka Fujimaru." you say, standing up and extending your hand, looking away so she doesn't see your probably beet red face. "I'm one of the new Master candidates. What's your name?"

Somehow, the atmosphere became even more oppressive. You were about to panic before she gave her response. "That's a hard question to answer suddenly…" she responds, looking away sadly. "Maybe I'm not important enough for you to know my name…"

Who the FUCK made this girl think that she wasn't important?

"That's not true!" you say, a little too loud for your liking. "You're the first person in Chaldea I've met, that's important enough. Plus, if we're to be coworkers it would be better for me to call you by your name instead of 'Mysterious Glasses Girl'."

That got a chuckle out of her, causing something in your chest to flutter a little, and with that the tense atmosphere that was present earlier disappeared in an instant. "Well I never really get the chance to use my name. People say that I usually don't give the best first impressions. My name is Mash Kyrielight," she responds, taking your hand. "Nice to meet you Fujimaru-senpai."

She gives you a small smile, which you return with a hopefully not too wide smile of your own.

"Anyway, may I ask you a question, Senpai?" she requests.

"Sure, fire away."

"You were asleep, but I can't see why you would possibly sleep on the floor. Can you not sleep unless you are on a hard bed?" she asks, quizzically tilting her head slightly to the side. Cute…

"Well, um, no I guess, I definitely prefer sleeping in a bed. I guess I was just so tired after over-exerting myself in the Spirtron Dive." you answer, scratching your head sheepishly.

You then feel something soft near your ankle and looking down, you see the small animal that woke you up earlier.

"By the way, who's this little guy?" you ask Mash as you crouch down to pet the animal.

"...Oh I completely forgot. This squirrel-like creature is Fou. He's a Privileged Life Form that is allowed to roam around Chaldea freely. Fou was the one who led me to you in the first place, Senpai."

More reasons to like this lil' guy. You give him a quick scratch behind the ears.

"Mkyuuu…" Awww, he was leaning into it. He's so precious.

After that quick scratch session, Fou leaves, walking away to another part of the facility.

"He ran off again. He does this sometimes." clarified Mash.

What a mysterious critter that Fou is…

"Congratulations. Now you shall become Fou's second caretaker." you hear a voice behind and you turn your head to face the source.

You are greeted by a man with bushy burgundy hair in a crisp green suit and top hat. He smiles at Mash.

"There you are Mash. That won't do, you know, wandering without permission." he said, chastising her.

His gaze shifts to you. "Oh, you're already with someone? You are one of the new Master candidates right? The final 48th candidate in fact."

He extends his hand for a handshake. "I'm Dr. Lev Lainur, one of the technicians employed here. And your name is?"

"Ritsuka Fujimaru." you say as you take his hand. Something seems off about this man, but you can't put your finger on it. You decide to forget about that feeling for the time being

"Since you are the last Master candidate here, I assume that you are a public Master Candidate. How long was your training? A year? 6 months? 3 months?"

You look away and mutter a single sentence. "...48 hours…"

"Pardon?"

"48 Hours." you say a bit louder and a tad bit more ashamed.

"Oh you're one of them. Do forgive me, I was being a tad inconsiderate. Please do not be discouraged that you are a public applicant, we will need all of you for the upcoming mission, whether it be elite mages or talented public applicants." his response mollified you a bit. A bit.

"If you have any questions, just ask Mash or myself." He finishes, well you thought he finished until Mr. Lainur began to talk once more. "Though, come to think of it… what were you talking to her Mash? You aren't exactly the type of person to go out of their way to talk to someone. Did you two know each other before?"

"No, I just met Fujimaru-senpai today. I just saw Senpai sleeping on the floor so I went to check on her."

"Ah, another overstimulated one eh." he says, with a grin. "It's to be expected. No one takes well to the Spiritron Dives on their first try. Mash and I will take you to the infirmary after the Director's Orientation."

Right, the new Director, Olga Marie Animusphere. From what you saw on the brochure she was a perfect picture representation of a mage. And from what you saw from what magi called "a picture perfect mage", you could guess that she wasn't exactly the nicest person to be around. Best not to get on her bad side.

"Do you think that I'll be able to sit at the orientation too Dr. Lev?" asked Mash.

"Well… If you stand far away in the back, she'll turn a blind eye, but why?"

"I thought I could take Senpai to the Command Room. It's possible that Senpai could fall asleep again on the way." Now that she mentioned it, you did still feel quite a bit tired. You think the reason you were energized a bit earlier was the fact that you saw Mash for the first time.

Dr. Lev sighed. "If I leave you two alone, the Director will yell at me…" he said with a slight shake of his head. "I should tag along as well, eh? Well if it's what you want to do Mash, then go ahead. Are you fine with this Fujimaru-san?"

"Yep, I'm fine with it…" you respond with a yawn.

"Then let us make haste to the Command Room."

Walking quickly through the sterile white corridors, you weren't sure if it was the fatigue talking or not, but you suddenly had a burning question for Mash.

"By the way Mash, why do you keep calling me Senpai?" you wanted to know if it truly was a unique nickname or not.

Mash stumbled a bit before getting back to the same pace as you and Dr. Lev. There was a luminescent blush on her face.

"Don't worry about it, to her every human your age is her senpai." Ah. You see…

"But it's unusual for her to actually call someone that. It might be the first time I've heard her say it out loud." You perk up once more, a stupid little chuckle threatening to escape your mouth.

"Say Mash, why do you call Fujimaru-san senpai?" he asks, seemingly intrigued.

"The reason? Well, Fujimaru-senpai is the most human-like person I've ever met. For some reason, I feel safe around her."

God, this girl was not good for your health. You've only known her for about 10 minutes and your heart was already in overdrive. At this rate, you're going to get a heart attack.

Dr. Lev laughed. "I see that is important! It looks like you two will be getting along just fine." he says with a jovial smile.

Mash chuckled too, before frowning abruptly. "...If you like Senpai Dr. Lev, then the Director will probably hate her."

"Hey, if she doesn't like me, then that's her problem." you reply. "We've got no reasons to dislike each other yet, so I think we can stay civil."

"That's the spirit Fujimaru-san," replied Dr. Lev. "Once you get used to her she can be very sweet. Alright, ready to go into the lion's den?"

You nod, suppressing another yawn, and the three of you enter the command room.

Upon entering, your vision is bathed with the color blue. In the middle of the room, you see a massive mass of mana inside of a gyroscopic mechanism and upon closer inspection you can see… the continent of Africa?

Before you can ask any questions, Mash began to direct you towards your seat

"Let's see… 48, 48… Ah, here's your seat Senpai, right in the front row." she makes eye contact with you again, expressing concern once more. "Senpai are you alright? You're looking a bit pale…"

You wave her off. "I'll be fine for a little longer." you say with an unconvincing yawn.

As Mash was about to protest, you heard a terse cough of a young woman. Director Animusphere. She looked a lot shorter than you thought she would be.

The white-haired Director impatiently tapped her foot on the ground glaring daggers at Mash and Dr. Lev.

"Looks like that's our cue Mash. No more small talk for the time being." said the doctor.

Reluctantly, Mash left you in your seat, after which, the Director took her spot at the podium in front of the seats.

"Hmph. Well that wasn't on time," she said glaring at you with enough anger to burn a hole through your head. "But it looks like we're all here now. I am Director Olga Marie Animusphere and I welcome you all to-"

As she began her speech, the fatigue that you had been holding back burst forth and unfortunately for you, you would lose this battle against fatigue.

The last thing you see before your head hits the table is the scandalized face of the director.

— — — — —

Master Candidate Fujimaru, get up this instant!

"Mmm. Five more minutes."

How dare you! If you do not wake right now, you will not be brought onto this mission!

"Shuuut uuupp. You ain't the boss of me."

…Out. Get this petulant child out of my sight!

"Get off of me you old hag…"

THAT'S IT! I'M DONE WITH YOU!

*SMACK*

A sharp pain flashes across your face and when you open your eyes, you find yourself in the hallway outside the Control Center, with Mash supporting you on her shoulder.

"Senpai, are you alright?" she asks you, helping you to stand on your own.

You suddenly remember falling asleep right at the beginning of Director Animusphere's speech. And your half-lucid sleep talking. The gravity of your situation hits you like a truck hitting an isekai protagonist.

"...Aw crap…"

"It seemed that you fell into REM sleep the second your head hit the desk. You were snoring and everything too." Mash's observations caused you to feel extremely self-conscious. No wonder you got kicked out of the Control Room…

"Anyways, the entire debacle made the Director so angry with you that she slapped you and forbade you from joining the mission. Dr. Lev told me to bring you back to your room while he calmed down the Director." Mash explained. "The director also tried to pry your Mystic Code off of you, but decided not to after she had difficulty grabbing you."

You sigh. If you weren't fired outright, you figured that you would be relegated to menial work for a long time. "Well at least the slap woke me up completely." you joke, trying not to think about your future at Chaldea.

"It's good that you're so optimistic Senpai," said Mash with a slight smile, it seemed like she was going to continue on until she was interrupted by a familiar fluffy dog-squirrel-cat.

"Oh!" exclaimed Mash as Fou clambered onto her shoulder.

"Fou…" the cute critter began nuzzling his face into Mash's hair affectionately. You wish you had your phone on you so this precious moment could be captured.

"Does he do this often?" You ask.

"Yes he does. He started doing this six months ago, he had finally warmed up to me at that time." she said, reminiscing to herself.

"Fou. Kuuu, Fou!" squeaked out Fou who was pointing his little paw at you.

Mash's smile got a little wider. "Hmm. Apparently, Fou has accepted you as one of his own Fujimaru-senpai." Curiously, her smile then shifted into a look of contemplation. "But can a squirrel who sees a human as a rival exist in this world?"

What?

"He… sees me as a rival?" you ask, a little flabbergasted.

Mash shrugged. "Well knowing him as well as I do, Fou will probably forget about it by tomorrow." she then stops abruptly. "We've reached our destination, this is your room Senpai."

Wow, you were so engrossed in your conversation with Mash that you didn't notice that you had walked quite a distance away from the Control Room.

"...I see. Thanks for bringing me all this way." you say, nervously running your hand through your hair.

"It's fine. If you ask me, Senpai, I wouldn't mind even if it's treating you to lunch." she said coolly.

A small chuckle escapes your lips and you look into Mash's eyes with conviction. "Promise?"

"I promise."

Fou makes his presence known once more with his calls. "Kyun… Kyun!" He climbed off of Mash's shoulder and clambered onto your's.

"Fou says that he'll look after you, that puts my mind at ease." she says, looking at the critter.

Looking back to you, she says her goodbye. "Well, I'm off Senpai. Take care of yourself."

— — — — —

As you waved goodbye to her with what you can only assume is the dopiest smile on your face, you open the door to your room and enter.

"Okay fine, I'm in here so just-"

You see a scruffy looking redheaded man in a doctor's coat getting up from what you can only assume is your bed.

"Whaa! Who are you?! What are you doing here?!"
"Ahhh! Who are you?! What are you doing here?!"

You both exclaimed at exactly the same time, even pointing at each other.

"Why are you asking why I'm here?" the man said. "This is an empty room, where I can slack off in peace! Who in the world gave you permission to get in?"

"This is MY room! If you want to go off and be lazy, do it in some other place." you exclaim irately.

The man suddenly shut up, and when he talks again, he is much more calm. "Your room? …Oh, I see. So you're the last one huh? Took you long enough to show up."

He stood up and offered you a handshake, the third one you had received today. "Well, I guess I should introduce myself properly this time. My name is Romani Archaman, I'm the head of the Medical Department here at Chaldea. For some reason, people call me Dr. Roman instead. But I think it has a nice ring to it."

"It's nice to meet you, Dr. Roman. My name's Ritsuka Fujimaru." you respond, returning his handshake firmly.

Dr. Roman's eyes drifted to Fou, and you could see his eyes light up in excitement. "So this is the mysterious creature I've heard so much about from Mash."

"Alright, shake. If you do it, I'll give you a snack." he said, looking at Fou expectantly, reaching out to him.

"...Fou."

Huh. You never thought an animal could make such a pitying noise, you almost felt bad for the Doctor.

"What's with that? He completely ignored me…" said Dr. Roman sadly. "A-Anyways, since you're here and not in the Command Room, I can safely assume that you got on the Director's bad side. You and I are alike in that regard. In fact, she yelled at me not too long ago."

"What'd she yell at you for?" you ask inquisitively.

"The entire staff was called to assist in preparation for today's Rayshift Experiment, and my job was to make sure everyone was in good health. But since everyone was healthy, I had nothing to really do. The Director didn't particularly like me just standing there. 'When you're here, Romani, everyone slacks off!'" he explained to you. "As such, I've been slacking off here. But that's when you showed up." The Doctor said, pointing to you.

"This is what they call a blessing in disguise right? Since we both have nowhere to go, why don't we spend some time deepening our new friendship, Ritsuka?"

You contemplate this train of thought for a bit, should you spend some time with this lazy doctor?

...

"Eh, sure why not. Just don't do anything weird."

"Then it's settled!" said the Doctor cheerfully. "Hey, since we're friends now, this means that I'm visiting a friend's room!" he adds with a grin.

"We just met. I can't really call you a friend right now." you answer with a hint of annoyance.

"Well then, we've got plenty of time to change that Ritsuka," he tells you optimistically.

"Please don't call me by my first name yet." You respond.

"Right, sorry. Forgot about Japanese etiquette for a sec."

You can respect his optimism, but you highly doubt that he can befriend you that easily.

— — — — —

"...And that's the structure of Chaldea."

Huh, that was actually pretty interesting. "Who would've known that building on a mountain would have been so easy thanks to Magecraft."

"I know right!" responded Dr. Roman enthusiastically. "Transporting materials is trivial thanks to this newly discovered Gravity Magecraft."

He's really good at explaining things. You guess this guy isn't so bad.

— — — — —

You had the Doctor right where you wanted him. Nothing would stop you from getting what you wanted now.

"There's no more options for you now Roman. Just give it up now."

"...No. I can't give up now. I can still come back from this."

You bristle in annoyance. This Doctor sure was stubborn. "Hmph. So be it. I'll just have to get the goods from your dead cooling hands."

"Try me. 66% to my loss still isn't 100%." he still looked determined.

"Let's end this."

For all the marbles, you ready yourself for what you knew was the final time.

"Jan-ken-pon!"
"Jan-ken-pon!"

You threw scissors and Dr. Roman threw…

"Heh. Scissors beats Paper. Hand over the prawn crisps." you say with a look of superiority. "Give them before I launch a gandr at your ugly mug."

"No… It can't be…". Look at this man. Groveling on the floor like an animal. You decide that you'll give him a single shred of mercy.

"Be grateful that you still have the pollock chips. Savor them while you still can." you say haughtily, popping a crisp into your mouth.

Dr. Roman groaned sadly.

"I'll make you regret what you've done to me Ritsuka, I'll make you pay!" He says to you with a fire in his eyes. "Those were my favorite chips!"

"Yeah, yeah, do your worst." you say with a smug smile.

"Fine, I've heard that this film can turn up the waterworks." he says holding up a DVD. "Think you get through it without ugly crying?"

"Obviously. It can't be that bad." you reply confidently.

— — — — —

You were simultaneously both cursing and thanking that the doctor showed you this masterpiece of a movie

Clutching Dr. Roman by the arm, you were crying into his shoulder. You could hear the doctor messily sobbing as well.

"Shouya… Why did it have to be you…" you croaked out in between sobs.

"Why couldn't it have been Kawai!" the doctor exclaimed.

"No. It should *hic* have been Ueno." you reply.

"Maybe… Maybe…" he then gasps. "Oh god… Shouko's going to think it's all her fault."

"Stop it! My heart can't take much more!"

You held each other, embracing one another in your shared grief from the tragic tale of redemption and young love.

"Fou…"

Oh right, and Fou was there for moral support you guess.

— — — — —

"...and that's how Chaldea came to be."

"It's really cool that a single person can create a massive organization for the good of humanity." you reply.

"Yeah, for all his unpleasantness, the previous Director did a lot of good things."

You've come to enjoy the company of Dr. Roman. He was funny and goofy, yet he could also be serious. He was also a pretty good teacher too.

Probably needs to up his janken game though.

"Who would have known that on such a crappy day, I'd get into Chaldea and make two friends in the span of 3 hours." you say, lounging on your bed.

"Two? Who's the second one?" he asks curiously.

"Oh, you already mentioned her when I first came in. Her name's Mash." you respond. "She's a really nice girl." you finish with a sigh.

"Yeah she really is…" he responds with a wistful look on his face. "You seem like you'll be a good influence on her Ritsuka, so make sure to keep her on the straight and true."

What Dr. Roman was going to say next is interrupted by a device on your nightstand that begins to beep.

"Hold on a second Ritsuka, I've got to take this call."

Dr. Roman retrieved the circular device and clicked a button on the side. The device began to glow and it projected an opaque hologram of Dr. Lev.

"Hologram communicators? That's pretty cool." You say.

"Yeah I know right, they're really convenient." replied the Doctor.

"Sorry to interrupt your impromptu bonding session, but we're going to start the Rayshift soon and we might need you in case there is an emergency. A Team seems to be perfectly fine, but I'm detecting some abnormalities from B Team as their heading on down. It's probably anxiety, but I need you to check. Just in case." explained Dr. Lev.

"I feel a little bad for the newbies, Lev. I'll make sure to give them a little anaesthesia." said the Doctor.

"Yeah, hurry up, will you? You're in the infirmary, so it will take you 2 minutes to get here. Get here before Olga blows her top again okay." with that last sentence, Dr. Lev hung up.

"Well this sure doesn't look like an infirmary," you state in mock surprise.

"Yeah, yeah very funny Ritsuka. I'll go get my stuff from the infirmary. And before I go, take this." Dr. Roman presses a button on the communicator before tossing it to you.

"These things are a dime a dozen in Chaldea, so you can have this one as a parting gift. I've reset it to factory settings, so you can put your own contacts in." he explained.

(Communicator Acquired!)

"Alright then, see you later Ritsuka! How about we talk over some cake next time?"

"Sounds good." you reply. "See ya later Doc."

As Dr. Roman leaves, Fou sulks next to your leg.

'Kyuun…"

"Sorry for ignoring you buddy." you say to him while patting his head. "I'll make sure to spend some time with you too."

Suddenly, the lights cut off.

"Huh? What the-"

*KABOOM*

Your blood runs cold. What in god's name was that?

Alarms begin to blare and red emergency lights began to flash as an automated voice rang out on the speakers.

— Emergency. Emergency. A fire has broken out in the Central Power Station and Central Command Room. The Central Area's Containment Wall will activate in 300 seconds. All staff, please evacuate through Gate 2 at once.
— Repeat. The Central Power Station and Central Command Room have been compromised. Please evacuate–

You don't hear the rest of the message. You can only think of that deafening boom. A bomb has gone off in the Command Room.

You think of all the people still in there.

The staff, the Director, Dr. Lev, your fellow Master candidates…

Mash.

You fight to keep your breathing under control, but you simply can't. You've got to get the survivors out as quickly as possible.

"Stay here Fou." you tell your furry companion. "I'll be right back."

Bursting out of your door, you see Dr. Roman, just as panicked as you are.

"Ritsuka, you've got to get out NOW! The containment wall is going to close soon, save yourself." he tells you through shaky breaths. "I'll be going to the Command Room to save as many people as I can and activate the emergency protocol."

"I can't just run away now!" you shout. "You'll need all the help you can get, I'm going with you!"

"Fou!"

Fou climbs onto your shoulder, as if to emphasize your point.

"Didn't I tell you to stay inside buddy?" you say accusatory.

"Fou kyun!☆~" Did he just wink? Probably just your imagination.

"Wh-th-Fine! Enough talking then, we've got to go now!" said Dr. Roman frantically. "Just make sure you get back in time."

Both of you sprinted as fast as you possibly could down the halls, then you both ran as hard as you could into the doors to force them open, shoulder first.

You were greeted with a sight of hell on earth.

Rubble was strewn across the Command Room, and everything as far the eye can see was wreathed in flames. Everytime you breathed in you felt your lungs sear.

"*cough* *hack* IS ANYONE HERE!" you yell as loud as you could manage without collapsing into a coughing fit.

"Ritsuka, there aren't any survivors! The bomb originated here, it's a miracle that CHALDEAS is still in one piece." says the Doctor. He ominously adds another statement too. "This was no accident, someone planted a bomb here in advance."

No way. That can't be right. Someone has had to survive…

— Generator operation has stopped. Power level is critical switching to back up generator. Error unable to switch to back up power. Manual restart needed. The Containment Wall will close in 90 seconds. Please evacuate to-

"...That's not good…" Roman turns to you with a pleading look in his eyes. "Ritsuka, I need to restart Chaldea's power. You need to go now. Please."

You nod, watching Roman disappear down the stairwell.

"..."

Despite what Dr. Roman said, you won't give up hope that someone may have survived. You stick around the disaster zone for just a bit longer.

"*COUGH* Hello! Is anyone here!" you shout to the best of your ability. Damn it, it was getting hard to breathe…

Sorting through the rubble, you couldn't find anything. Not even a corpse. Fou had leaped off of your shoulder earlier, searching in the opposite direction of you. He had similar luck to you when finding any survivors.

Your head was getting fuzzy, each breath took a herculean amount of effort to force through. You were going to leave when you heard something. A small cough you almost missed thanks to the roaring fire.

"I hear you! Hold on, I'll get you out!"

Half running and half dragging your feet, you make it to the source of the sound to find…

"Oh god… Mash!" you see the entire lower half of her body crushed by a massive slab of concrete. "Hang in there, I'll get you out of there!"

"...Senpai…It's alright… You…can't save…me… Don't…mind me… Save…yourself…"

"Like hell I will!" you retort. "I won't leave you here to die!"

The room is then suddenly bathed in an intense red light, and it completely overpowers the fire.

"What in the world?!"

"Ah…" croaked out Mash.

A new announcement interrupted the looping emergency message.

— Alert. CHALDEAS' state has changed. Recalibrating SHEBA's near-future prediction data.
— Unable to detect the existence of Mankind 100 years into the future.

What did it just say? No, that can't be right…

— Unable to detect survivors.

— Unable to guarantee Mankind's future.

Unable to guarantee mankind's future!? Your head was swimming with questions, but you shook them out of your mind.

You activate your H.U.D. and access your Mystic Code's Reinforcement magecraft, using it to reinforce your arms.

"Just hold on for a little longer, Mash." you say trying to reassure her.

'User's Mana: 80 / 200 MP'

You were running pretty low on mana, so you were fairly sure this was going to be the last time you would be using Magecraft for a while, unless you managed to find something that could recharge your mana.

Once the magecraft finished doing its thing, you grabbed the slab and heaved with all your might. It didn't even budge.

"Damn it you stupid rock, MOVE!" you shout in desperation. You have to get her out. You need to.

Your next attempt at lifting the rock is even less successful, as you collapse in another coughing fit before you can even grip it.

"Damn it… DAMN IT!"

— Central area is sealed. 180 seconds until the internal containment procedure commences.

"...they shut off the area… We can't…get out now…"

You fall to your knees in despair. This was it, you're going to die.

You had so much that you wanted to do and so much you wish you could say…

You think of your family.

'Mom… Dad… Kanata…'

You think of the future, the future you would-no WILL have.

You knew the risks you would face when you decided to stay. Now's not the time for self-pity. There's someone else who needs you now, and they were right in front of you.

"Sorry for stopping Mash… I was just a bit… tired." you try and fail to stand up. The lack of oxygen was starting to affect your body now.

"...Senpai…why?... Why would you go… so far… for me?..." said Mash. Her voice was not much louder than a whisper now.

"You've already become someone very important to me. My first friend." you respond as frankly as possible. "I'll figure out something to get you out. I promise. Someone's gotta treat me to lunch once they recover from their injuries."

You tenderly grab her hand. You feel her weakly try to grip yours. "I won't let you go, I swear on my life."

You see the bloodsoaked Mash give you one last faint smile. "...I'm glad I met you…Ritsuka…Sen…pai…"

She closed her eyes, but you knew she was alive from how her grip on your hand tightened. Your breathing slows.

—...Searching for a qualifying Master… Master found: No. 48 Ritsuka Fujimaru.

You could see your life flashing before your eyes.

— …Candidate Fujimaru reset as Master…

You see your first day of primary school.

— …Unsummon Program, start. Spiritron Conversion, start. All systems clear…

You see your meetings with Old Man Tanaka.

— Rayshift starting in 3,...

You see the Chaldea flier flapping in the wind.

— …2,...

You see the kind faces of Mash and Dr. Roman…

— …1,...

"I wish…I could have at least saved you Mash…" you utter one last time. Your world then goes black.

— First Order. Commencing Operation.

Chapter 2: Prologue: Section 2

Notes:

Looking back on these Sections gives me a feeling of nostalgia tbh, even if it's only been around a year.

I was still trying to find a definitive voice for my writing back then, still am all things considered, so some of it is a bit too scuffed imo. I mostly take issue with making Olga Marie too much of a chump, making Mash too assertive, considering the climactic scene that often happens against Salter at the end of Fuyuki being her definitive first step in her Arc, and using too much of the in-game Dialogue from F/GO, which is admittedly a bit lazy. But I've decided to keep the writing itself mostly intact, with only a few edits here and there for the sake of the readers.

For positives though, I did enjoy writing the Orkney Sisters interacting. I honestly wish they could have been picked again for Orleans, but it is in the hands of the Questers where the story commences after all.

Anyways, hope y'all enjoy this too!

Summoning Chant was created by a Reddit User by the name of u/FileLoop, which I nabbed and modified slightly. Also, my dumbass younger self didn't link the post, so here it is now: https://www.reddit.com/r/grandorder/comments/fr4rok/i_wrote_up_an_alternate_summoning_chant/

Chapter Text

Singularity F: Flame Contaminated City Fuyuki
Fuyuki, Japan, circa 2004
Foundation of Humanity Significance: C

"Kyuu... Fou, kyuu..."

You feel something licking your face. Was this the after life or something? It feels really warm for the afterlife.

"Senpai! Please, wake up Senpai!

You hear a voice from far away. It sounds like…Mash…

"She's not waking up… Maybe I should use her official title…"

"Master. Please wake up."

You feel someone squeeze your hand. It feels exceedingly familiar…

"Ritsuka-senpai…Please wake up. Or I-I'll kill you myself."

You inhale deeply. You are distinctly aware of the smoke.

Your eyes shoot open and you quickly bolt upwards, coughing.

You see you aren't in Chaldea anymore.

You were in a burning city, with fire as far as the eye can see. Buildings, homes, and everything in between were destroyed, with only their skeletons still standing.

"Senpai! Thank goodness you're awake! I'm so glad you're alright."

You see Mash still gripping your hand.

"Mash! Are you okaaaaaaaa-" you then notice her… revealing and form-fitting outfit.

She was wearing a sort of tight armored dress which accentuated her rather… stacked assets and exposed her midriff. Her metal skirt was way, WAY too short, which exposed quite a bit of leg and…

Huh. They're black.

"Senpai! You're burning up! Hang in there, I'll get you to someplace cooler."

Mash scooped you up in a princess carry, causing your reddening face to change to a color not unlike your hair and your heart to go into overdrive.

"Mash…please put me down…" you say meekly.

"I beg your pardon Senpai? I can't really hear what you said."

"PUT ME DOWN!" Mash flinches, and reluctantly sets you down on your feet. God, now you felt bad for yelling.

"...Sorry for yelling, Mash. I don't have a fever. It's just that your outfit is…y'know…" you point at her, looking away to try to calm down.

You try sneaking a look, to gauge whether or not it was safe for your heart to look at this gorgeous girl.

"Ah. I can… certainly see why you would be embarrassed." Mash's face was also fairly red now. She takes a deep breath and shakes her head cutely. Nope. Still not safe to look back.

"Impractical outfits aside, it seems that we have more important things to worry about Ritsuka-senpai. We appear to be surrounded."

Surrounded!?

Mash calmly walks past you and grabs what you assume was a piece of debris.

Pulling out of the ground, you see that it is instead a massive cross shaped shield, which Mash seemed to heft without as much as a grunt of effort. She turned to face the possible enemies she detected earlier.

Shambling towards you two inhumanly quickly were 6 sword wielding skeletons.

"GHAAAAAA!" cried out the one in the lead, and the skeletons charged at the both of you.

"Lifeforms identified as hostile. Linguistic communication is impossible." Mash gets into a defensive stance. She looks back at you, and you don't see the gentle girl from Chaldea anymore.

You see a determined warrior, who would fight tooth and nail for you.

"Your orders, Master?"

Your orders, huh? Looks like Mash expects a lot from you.

And you intend to meet her expectations.

"Activate H.U.D."

You browse to Mash's skill section and see what she can do. Her Skill 1, Transient Wall of Snowflakes, boosts her Defense, so you decide to make her activate it.

Mash use your 1st Skill! You instruct her telepathically.

Affirmative Senpai!

"Stats UP! I'm ready." she exclaims.

You need to break apart the skeletons' formation, isolate them to take them out in small manageable groups. An idea pops into your head.

"Crush their formation, Mash. Give them no reprieve!" you yell out.

"On it." Mash squats down and launches herself through the formation.

Mash annihilates the middle of the formation. When Mash returns to her feet there are no traces of the targeted skeletons.

Unfortunately for you, while the skeletons in the back were stopped, the ones in the front were still rushing towards you.

"*tch*"

Running for dear life, you vaulted over several rocks and piles of rubble towards Mash. You need to stick a fair distance near her if she is to protect you satisfactorily. But out of nowhere, a building collapses right in front of you, cornering you.

"What are the odds…" you bemoan to yourself. You frantically look around for an opening to escape, to no avail. Both skeletons were preparing to bring their swords down onto you when Mash swoops in to save you.

"I've got you Senpai!" Mash shouts, shoving you out of the way. You then are forced to watch in horror as both swordsmen proceed to slash up her back.

"Mash!"

"I'm fine Senpai! Just. Stay. Back!" In an impressive display of grit, she ignores her wounds and backhands her attacker into some rubble with her shield, with the skeletons pulverizing upon hitting the rocks at terminal velocity.

You need to treat Mash's wounds quickly, but there were two more skeletons that needed to be taken care of before you could do so. Focusing on your environment, you try to focus your senses, looking for any signs of those bags of bones.

You see a glint of metal slowly approaching Mash, so you focus your H.U.D. onto it.

'Skeleton E: Lv.1'
'Skeleton F: Lv.1'

Bingo.

"Mash, behind you!" you point to the enemies. Mash glances behind her briefly before launching herself one last time.

The skeletons never stood a chance.

— — — — —

You rush to Mash to deal with her wounds.

"Stay still, I've got to fix you up."

Accessing your Mystic Code, you select First Aid and direct your mana towards your Servant.

You watch as her torn back slowly closes itself up, until the only indication the wound was ever there was the blood spilt. Your H.U.D. updated to display this.

'Mash Kyrielight is no longer seriously injured.'
'User's Mana: 60 / 200'

"There… You're all set to go now... Mash," you tell her, as you fall to your knees once more.

You feel so tired now. You really need to replenish your mana soon.

"Are you okay Senpai?" your Servant says, slinging her shield on her right arm and reaching her free hand out. "Does your stomach hurt or is it heavy?"

"None of those Mash, I'm just a bit low on Mana." you respond, taking Mash's hand. As you get up, another pop-up appears in your H.U.D., right by the closest fallen skeletons. "Hey, what are those things?"

'Blaze of Wisdom (All) x5'
'Silver Apple x1
'Proof of a Hero x1'

You trudge past Mash and bend down to pick up the highlighted objects. The so-called 'Blaze of Wisdoms' appeared to be glowing crystals and the 'Proof of a Hero' looked to be an engraved blue and beige disk. The apple appeared to just look like a metallic apple, but you decide to analyze all of these objects before you do anything hasty.

You will your H.U.D. to analyze the objects, with their properties appearing in clear text.

'Blaze of Wisdom (All): Crystallized mana that can be used to strengthen Servants of any class.'
'Silver Apple: A Magical Apple that is brimming with mana. Can be used to restore a decent amount of mana in a pinch.
'Proof of a Hero: Proof that you have been acknowledged as a hero. Used to strengthen Servants.'

Whoa, that's pretty neat.

"Hey Mash! I've found some pretty useful stuff here," you say, calling out to your self-proclaimed Kouhai.

"What did you find, Senpai?" she asks, her curiosity piqued.

"I found some stuff that can strengthen Servants. I also think that I found a solution to my Mana problem."

You pocket the Blazes and the disk and raise the apple for Mash to see.

"A Silver Apple? How did that get here?" She says, scrutinizing the fruit. "I thought that they could only be found in Greece."

"Well, my Analysis Magecraft says that it's legit. I'll try not to look at the gift horse in the mouth." you reply.

Taking a bite, you found the flavor to be… lacking. "Eurgh… It tastes exactly like it looks…" But you felt Mana flow into you, so you couldn't complain about that. After finishing the entire apple, you check your Mana supply again.

'User's Mana: 160 / 200'

"All topped off now Mash," you say giving her a thumbs up. "God I never want to eat one of those things again…"

"Alright then, let's go Senpai. But before we go, are you aware of where we are?"

You vaguely remember something about a singularity from what little you heard from the Director's speech.

"Something about Singularity, right?"

"Yes, you're right," she affirms. "We were initially tasked with correcting the Singularity we are currently within now, Singularity F. We need to correct this era if we are to return back to Chaldea."

You nod in understanding. "So where do we go from here?"

"I… don't really know…"

...

Huh. Well, you two are certainly in a pickle.

Before you can respond, you feel something at your feet. Something furry.

"Man Fou, it seems like you've stuck to me like a limpet. Thanks for bringing me back to the land of the living earlier by the way," You said, as you let the furry critter climb onto your shoulder. As he nuzzles into your hair, you turn to Mash.

"So…Before we go walking in a random direction I've got a burning question to ask."

"Oh um, go ask away Senpai."

You breathe in before continuing on. "How the hell did you become a Servant?"

"Ah right. You probably already knew thanks to your Magecraft," she replies. "When I was pinned under the rubble, I was visited by a Servant. They had lost their Master in the explosion and they were doomed to vanish. So they approached me with a contract. They would fuse with me and we would both survive. The terms were that they would provide me with their powers and Noble Phantasm and in return I would help to eliminate the cause of the Singularity."

"Do you know who they are?" you ask once more.

"Unfortunately, no. I wasn't able to hear their True Name."

You sigh. "Well, I suppose I've wasted enough of our time. Let's start going… West."

Mash nods and you both set off towards the center of the city.

— — — — —

You've both been walking in relative silence for quite some time, with nothing but the sound of roaring flames and the smell of smoke to interrupt it. You haven't seen any more of those skeletons thankfully. But thanks to the lack of action, you've run out of adrenaline and your concentration is waning. Hell, you're pretty sure Fou was fast asleep already.

While you are looking at your newly acquired Command Seals, a shower thought pops into your mind through the monotony. "Hey Mash, since you're a Servant, I can strengthen you with these Mana Embers. How would you take in the Mana?"

"Well, I guess I could eat them…" she contemplates.

"How about we test that out?"

"Oh, sure thing Senpai."

You hand the Blazes over, and Mash inspects them before popping one into her mouth and biting down.

"HRMN!? Hot, Hot!" she exclaims as her face flushes and she begins to perspire.

'So they're spicy.' you think to yourself. Mash begins to fan her face with her free hand.

...

'She's making a cute face again…"

All of a sudden, you feel something vibrating in your pocket. You fish it out and find that it is the Communicator that Dr. Roman gave you before everything went to hell.

You remember that he pressed the blue button on the side to accept the call, and upon pressing it you were greeted by a mini Dr. Roman.

"Finally I got through! Hello? This is the Chaldea Command Room, does anyone copy?"

"This is Mash Kyrielight from the A Team with Master Candidate Ritsuka Fujimaru, we copy," replied Mash. "Ooh boy, Mana is really spicy…"

"Mash and Ritsuka thank god you're okay! Ritsuka, didn't I tell you to get out?! Your physical body nearly died! I had to resuscitate you and- Wait did Mash say something about spicy mana? Where did that come from? And how the hell did Fou get there?!"

"It's not important, Doctor," she responds, eating the last Blaze with a wince.

"Anyways, we have arrived safely, with mind and body intact. Rayshift and Master Compatibility are satisfactory, so I'd like you to register Senpai as an official researcher."

"Already on it. I'm surprised you didn't 'lose your existence' Ritsuka. I'm glad for that. But please listen to me next time, okay?"

Lose your existence? You hope that would never happen to you…

"By the way Mash, while I'm also glad you're safe, what's up with that scandalous outfit?! I didn't raise you to dress like that!" added the Doctor. Also did he say raise? Nah, you were probably hearing things.

"I remember Senpai also said something along those lines," answered Mash. "But I couldn't exactly protect her in my Chaldea Uniform. So I transformed into this."

"What do you mean by transformed?"

"Just check her status Doc. You can do that from the Command Center right?" you clarify.

"Her status?" you see Dr. Roman fiddle with something off screen and watch as his eyes become as wide as dinner platters. "Wh-Whoa, whoa, whoa, WHOA! Your physical strength, your magical circuits, everything has improved dramatically! Your parameters are at the level of-"

"A Servant," interjects Mash. "Indeed, I've gained the strength of a Servant by fusing with a Masterless Servant. They gave me their strength to assist with the correction of Singularity F."

"A Heroic Spirit fused with a human… A Demi-Servant," said an awestruck Dr. Roman. "So it finally succeeded… Does this Servant still have their consciousness?"

"No, they gave me their combat abilities before I could hear their True Name and Noble Phantasm. At this point, there's too much that I don't know…" she responded, becoming briefly downcast.

"Hey, look on the bright side. Not every Servant summoned is cooperative. But since you're a loyal member of Chaldea, you're completely trustworthy," said Dr. Roman, which seemed to cheer Mash up a little. "Now back to you Ritsuka. I'm sure you're full of questions, but try not to worry. After all, you've got humanity's strongest weapon, Mash, as your Servant."

"Well I wouldn't say that I don't know about being the strongest…" she says bashfully.

"Nonsense," You say, encouraging her. "You're like a cooler, more purple version of that one American comic book hero. What was his name again?"

"I'm going to pretend that you didn't just say that," deadpanned Dr. Roman. "Getting back on topic, the data indicates that unlike previous Servant-Master Contracts in Chaldea, your contract seems to be a much more powerful than the usual Provisional Contract, meaning that while your Command Seals are more powerful when you use them on Mash, the Seals specifically for you and Mash won't regenerate. Make sure to be careful when using them."

"Roger Dr. Roman," you say with a mock salute.

"Right then, now's a good time to explain the rules of this mission. You currently have two major goals-" The display of the communicator begins to flicker and the audio starts to distort.

"Doctor! You're breaking up!" says Mash, with urgency.

"Huh, so SHEBA's output has become unstable thanks to it being connected to the backup generators. Oh well, I'll brief you two later. I'm getting a strong leyline reading coming a kilometer from your current position, just walk straight and you'll find it. Try to get there, it should stabilize the connection. Don't do anything reckless you two, okay? I'm going to go help Da Vinci and the surviving staff bring the power back as soon as-" Dr. Roman is abruptly cut off as the Communicator stops detecting a signal from Chaldea.

"...Dr. Roman?" Mash says in an uncharacteristically small voice.

You sigh. "Well it can't be helped… Let's get moving Mash."

"Right."

Fou had also awakened by the time the conversation had cut out. He was currently trying to eat your hair.

After waving him off, you decide to ask Mash one more thing before you both continue on.

"By the way, what's a Leyline?"

— — — — —

"Wow, it really is just a big, glowing hole in the ground."

"That's a *snrk* particularly crude way of referring to a Leyline, but you are somewhat on the nose with your description, Senpai."

You and Mash had both hiked a fair distance to the coordinates Dr. Roman had indicated. He was right in that it was in front of you, but his route didn't include the piles of rubble and debris you both had to go around and over. You were definitely giving him an earful for that later.

"The Mana density in the atmosphere is abnormally high," stated Mash. "I wonder what could have possibly caused that and the fire…"

As the two of you finished scaling one last incline to reach the Leyline, you heard something to your left that caused your breath to hitch.

"KYAAAAAAAAAA!"

It was a woman's scream, which meant that you and Mash weren't the only ones here. But she was screaming, and a person who was perfectly safe wouldn't scream.

"That can't be a good sign…"

"Senpai, we've got to get over there quickly!" said Mash. You nod, and the two of you run as quickly to the source of the noise to find… the Director?!

"Wh-what are these things anyways?! Why do these things keep happening to me? I can't take it anymore! Please Lev, save me…"

The Director was having a complete breakdown, curling herself into a ball as 8 skeleton swordsmen closed in on her.

"Director Olga Marie?" says Mash in an almost question like manner.

She gasps and she turns her head to you revealing her tear-streaked face. "Y-you two?! What are you two doing here?"

You and Mash position yourself in front of the Director. "Now's not the time to talk, Director! Mash, engage the enemy!"

"Yes, Master! Awaiting Orders!"

As Mash was readying to charge into the fray, you half drag and half carry the nearly catatonic Director out of the fray. There'd be no reason in exerting this much effort in trying to save her if you didn't get her to safety first.

"H-hey! Get your hands off me!" she confusingly exclaimed, thrashing around weakly in your grip.

"Director, we need to get you out of harm's way. Please don't make this more difficult than this needs to be," you said to the panicking woman.

You didn't have much time to spare, the skeletons were already converging on your position. But, strangely enough, they all seemed to be poised to attack Mash…

A neat little idea materializes in your mind's eye. Yeah, that should work…

You telepathically command Mash once again. Mash let the skeletons get near you. Once all the skeletons are all upon you, activate your Second Skill. Wait until I Reinforce you before attacking.

Affirmative, Master!

You drop Director Animusphere behind a relatively large and stable looking pile of rubble. "Stay here Director, we'll be right back."

Rushing back out to the battlefield, you are buffeted by a surge of wind. Mash has activated her skill already, bathing herself in an ethereal white light, and she is currently being whaled upon by the entire group of skeletons.

You activate your H.U.D. and focus your mana through your Mystic Code, willing it to reinforce Mash's shield arm. Upon its success, you give Mash your signal.

"Now Mash!"

Mash immediately twists her body, before letting out a war cry and swinging her shield in a massive arc.

"EYAAAAAA!"

None of the enemies were able to react, they were too close to dodge or block. Two-thirds of the skeletons were promptly reduced to a shower of bone splinters. Your plan had worked perfectly.

But two skeletons were just out of reach from Mash's

"Two more on your left Mash!" you order. "Take them out!"

She gives a brief nod, dodging the two swordsmen's errant strikes before retaliating with another sweep, horizontally bisecting them in the process.

Just like that, the battle was over in less than 2 minutes.

— — — — —

"How was that Senpai?"

"It was perfect, absolutely perfect Mash," you reply collecting the spoils of battle, 5 Blazes and 2 more Hero disks.

The battle had come and gone quickly. Mash had done an amazing job, and you wasted no time praising her.

"You were like 'Hi-Yah!', then the skeletons straight up evaporated! Then you whipped your shield around the other way to get the rest of the skeletons. I'd say that you went beyond satisfactory," you say with a grin.

"...Th-thank you Senpai…" she said bashfully.

"Anyways, let's go check on the Director," you say gesturing towards the Director.

Wait since when did the Director get right next to you?

"Ah, Director," said Mash, who began to make her way towards the Director. "Are you hurt?"

The Director looked to be mostly okay, but you didn't really know if she was fine mentally. You could probably get Dr. Roman to check once you reestablish contact.

"...What's going on?" she asked

Mash attempted to answer her. "Well, Director, about my situation. The truth is-"

She was then quickly cut off by the Director. "Yes, yes you're a Demi-Servant. It's pretty obvious, no normal person should be able to lift a shield that big. What I want to know is why it's successful NOW of all times."

Well, that was kind of rude. But you suppose that she has a point. You also realize that you forgot to turn off your H.U.D. might as well do it now. But, as you do it something catches your attention.

'Olga Marie Animusphere:
Condition: Dead (0 / 1,000 HP)
Mana: 8,000 / 250'

What in the world was with that? Was your Magecraft being tampered with or something?

"...And YOU! The civilian that showed up late to my speech!"

"Huh? Oh, what?"

"How did you become Master? Only first-class Mages can enter contracts with Servants! There's no way you could have become a Master!" shouted the Director irately.

Mages… you already expected this, it was fine. You'll just give her the 'Now is not the time', which would stop her classism for now…

"What did you do to Kyrielight to force her to do your bidding?!"

This bitch…

"What the fuck?! That was way off base!" You just saved her sorry ass! Why the hell was she being such a jerk?

"Senpai, calm down! There seems to be a misunderstanding, Director," Mash interjects, placing herself between you and the Director. "I'm actually the one who forced the contract."

"What did you say?" said the Director, confusion evident on her face.

"I'll explain in more detail, that way you'll understand." said Mash, who prepared to recount what had happened to the two of you.

— — — — —

"...And after finding and rescuing you, we find ourselves back in the present. No other Master candidates shifted with us. You're the only human we've encountered thus far, Director. But seeing you gives me hope. If you're here, then that must mean there are others who might have shifted too…"

The Director seems to have calmed down after listening to Mash's exposition. After being silent for a bit, she speaks once more. "...There aren't actually. That much I'm certain of," she says, contemplatively. "I hate to admit it, but I know why we were shifted to Fuyuki."

"You do Director?" questioned Mash.

"Well, all three of us share a common denominator. Neither you, me, nor THAT One were actually inside the Coffins," she says.

Continuing along, displaying no remorse towards her statement towards you, she resumed her hypothesis. "Though Rayshifting flesh and blood isn't likely to succeed, it's still possible. The Master Candidates in the Coffins meanwhile weren't transported thanks to the built-in breakers to prevent shifts with a less than 95% chance of success. As such, they never actually Rayshifted. We're the only ones here."

That was… actually pretty easy to understand. "So no help is coming huh…"

"Indeed." she replies. "We can only rely on each other."

This Director was calm and stoic, a far cry from the blubbering and screeching mess you saw earlier.

"Y'know, you can be pretty reliable when you're calm, Director," you say.

Her eye noticeably twitches. "What's that supposed to mean? Are you saying that I'm not usually calm?"

"No ma'am.~" you say in a singsong voice, which only serves to irritate her more.

"Hmmph, whatever. I think I understand this situation more. Fujimaru, since this is an emergency, I'll approve you and Kyrielight's contract. From here on out, you will listen to my commands," she turns to face the two of you. "First, let's set up a base camp. Then, after we are calm and collected, we will search for a Leyline Terminal. There, we will have enough magical energy to contact Chaldea." the Director looks away, appearing to be racking her brains. "Now in this town it would be located in…"

…Did she not see the massive, blue pulsating crack in the ground?

Mash clears her throat, getting Director Animusphere's attention. "Director, you're standing right on top of the Leyline," she stated matter-of-factly, pointing at the ground for emphasis.

The Director immediately flushed red with embarrassment. "O-oh! Right, I knew that, I knew that. Kyrielight, place your shield on the ground, I'll create a summoning circle with your Noble Phantasm as the catalyst."

Mash hesitated for a brief moment. "Are you all right with that Senpai?" she asks expectantly.

"While I'm not the greatest advocate for letting go of the weapon, the quicker we do this, the quicker we can recontact Chaldea. Go for it Mash," You respond.

"...Understood, let us begin, Director."

Mash places her shield on top of the Leyline, and after the director poured some of her Mana into it, it transformed into a completely circular translucent table. How, you might have asked? You tried not to question it.

"Just a little more Mana should do the trick…" muttered the Director under her breath.

As she willed some more Mana into the shield-turned-spectral-table, something in the Director's coat pocket began to glow.

Looking directly at the light, you were beset by a massive migraine.

"Senpai?! Are you alright?" exclaimed Mash, grabbing you as you fell.

"How the hell did I have some of Da Vinci's Saint Quartz with me?" Yelled out the Director, frantically fishing some strange crystals out of her pocket. "And why are they resonating with HER?!"

The rainbow octahedral crystals were glowing with an intense iridescent light.

'It's beautiful…' you think to yourself, before you blacked out.

— — — — —

Mash was on the verge of a panic attack.

Her newly minted Master had suddenly collapsed after resonating at some of Da Vinci's Saint Quartz, which was still somehow on the Director's person after the explosion.

"Senpai! Please wake up Senpai!"

She had never seen anyone react so intensely to the crystals before. Perhaps, her Senpai was even injured thanks to them.

Thankfully, before Mash had to take any desperate measures, mostly involving having the now demounted Fou bite her. Ritsuka-senpai opened her eyes, and was able to stand on her own accord.

Mash breathed a sigh of relief. "Don't scare me like that Senpai… After we make contact with Dr. Roman and the rest of Chaldea, I'm having them send you an ice cold canteen of water."

The Director also expressed her worry…in her own special way. "HOW?! How did you do that Fujimaru, I demand to-"

Confusingly, she stopped mid sentence. Taking a good look at the Director, Mash could see that she had turned as pale as a sheet. She had not taken her eyes off of Senpai.

Mash takes a quick look and is met with the uncharacteristically dull stare of her Master. She still looked to be unconscious, yet she was moving normally, as if in a trance.

She raised her hand towards the summoning circle and incredibly, Senpai began to chant.

I call forth into the deep expanse of time

To heroes of legend, through wishes crystallized

Through the wishes of the individual

Through the wishes of the collective

And through the wishes of civilization

These are the final wishes of humanity.

As I stand upon the infallible boundary, before the brink of its destruction, I call out to you.

Take form from your legend, armed to fight once more

And from the collapse we shall forge a new path.

From that path, we will carve a future

Through you, I shall embody change

And through me, you shall embody will.

To those written into legends, of Heroes and of Villains,

From Men, from Kings, from Gods.

To those who hail to heed the call, I summon you,

Come forth in duty, from desire, from free will.

I ask this as Humanity's Last Master.

The summoning circle ignites into a pillar of golden light, and thanks to her Servant abilities, Mash could detect not one, but THREE Servant Mana signatures.

"What's going on? WHAT'S GOING ON?! And what does she mean by Last Master?!" exclaimed the Director, on the verge of another meltdown.

Mash smiled. "Senpai has summoned some Servants Director. Looks like we'll be receiving some help after all."

One by one, Mash watched as the three Servants walked out of the light.

The first was a young girl, donning a knight's armor and helm, carrying a massive spear and heater shield. A Lancer no doubt.

The second was a stern looking dark skinned man with stark-white hair. He was wearing a long, flowing red coat, but was wielding no weapons, making it difficult to pinpoint his class.

The final Servant to appear was a surprisingly short knight, covered head to toe in crimson and silver plate armor, making their gender ambiguous. They were wielding a sword, which identified them as a Saber.

Once the light died down, Senpai almost collapsed again, but she was stopped by the Lancer, catching her in her arms.

"Whoa! You okay?" she exclaimed. Senpai then tenderly grabbed her hand before slowly stirring.

Something burned in Mash's chest, a feeling of hurt. She didn't know why she was feeling this, but it seemed to get worse the longer she looked at Senpai lying in the arms of Lancer, holding her tight…

Mash shook her head, whatever these unknown feelings were, they weren't important. What mattered right now was Senpai.

She strode up to her Master, and gently squeezed her arm.

"Senpai. It's time to wake up."

— — — — —

Your head was pounding, your brain threatening to burst out of its skull.

You try to reach out to feel anything, and feel something soft. You wonder what it could be…

You then feel something squeeze you arm, and Mash's voice calls out to you

"Senpai. It's time to wake up."

Your eyes slowly flutter open, but instead of being greeted by your purple-haired kouhai, you see a blonde girl with vivid green eyes with a knight's helmet perched on her head.

"'Ello there! You kind of collapsed there for a second," said the girl, her bright smile complimented by her distinct British accent. "Are you alright luv?"

You nod. You also suddenly realize that you are currently holding her hand. Her very warm and gentle hand.

You quickly let go with a blush, pulling away before your own hand would get sweaty.

"You had me worried there for a while, Senpai," said Mash, who let go of your shoulder. Turning to the girl you were holding hands with earlier, she gives her an uncharacteristically cold stare. "I'll take it from here, Lancer."

"Okie Dokie!" Responded the Lancer. Wait Lancer?

You quickly take stock of your surroundings. The Director was staring at the apparent Lancer with her jaw agape. Fou was comically smacking her shocked face, much to your amusement.

You take a closer look at the blond girl. She had some strands of black hair peeking out from under her help, not to mention that she was wielding a lance as long as you were tall in addition to holding a heater shield.

Behind her, there were two more people. One was a short looking knight in full plate armor and the other was a tall, dark skinned man with white hair in a red coat, sitting on a rock.

The man was also wearing a tight shirt that accentuated his rippling muscles…

...

Maybe you were Bi or something.

Ignoring the new revelation about your sexuality, you activate your H.U.D. What you saw astonished you.

'Lancer: Lv. 25'
'Archer: Lv.40'
'Saber: Lv. 50'

"Wait, how the hell did Servants get here?!"

The fully armored knight, now identified as Saber, scoffed. "Great. We got a clueless newbie as a Master."

Their voice was androgynous, and they had a similar accent to Lancer. You couldn't tell if the knight was a man or a woman.

"Hey! There's no need to be so rude sis," said Lancer, chastising the other knight, now identified as a woman.

Saber abruptly stood up and aggressively grabbed Lancer by her shoulder pauldron. "Don't. Refer to me. As a woman. SISTER."

"Hey, hey!" you exclaimed, panicking as you made your way towards the two Servants. "There's no need to fight!"

Lancer held her hand out to stop you. "It's fine Master, it's my fault for making a faux pas. Plus, it's not like Mo's actually going to hurt me, we are siblings after all," She then turned to the knight she called her sister, who was now stuttering in frustration. "Sorry Mo. I won't slip up again," said Lancer, still smiling slightly.

Saber let go with a huff, turning away from Lancer.

"Are you done with your little temper tantrum Saber?" The man known as Archer stated, almost challenging Saber.

"What did you say to me?!"

"I'll take that as a yes," the man says, standing up. "Before you go and assault me, we have more important things to do. Such as making our contracts official."

You realize that Saber was already half-way to Archer before she stops. "...Fine. But this isn't over," responds Saber irately, pointing at Archer to emphasize their point.

Wow. These three were certainly some interesting characters…

"Okay then, I'll start!" said Lancer excitedly. "I'm Gareth, the 7th Seat of the Round Table. Class: Lancer. Nice to meet ya luv!" Gareth flashes you a positively radiant smile. "You are our Master, right?"

"Y-yeah, I am. Nice to meet you too Gareth," you respond awkwardly. You hear Mash muttering about something, but you can't really make it out.

Saber went next. "...I'm Saber. Name's Mordred. Don't waste my time Master."

Man, even though you were taller than her, she made you want to shrink down into a little ball… Wait, Mordred?

"Mordred? As in the Knight of Treachery?"

If Mordred's helmet was off, you would have seen her sending a withering glare in your direction. "So what if I am? What does it mean to you?"

You wanted to run so badly. "W-well you're a very well known and famous Servant, I need to make sure you're the real thing."

You suddenly feel the wave of killing intent dissipate. "You better not be sucking up…" Mordred then turned away in a huff, crossing her arms over their chest, leaving you both relieved and confused. Mordred then unsheathed their sword, and pointed it at you. "This sword is Clarent. The one I stole all those years ago. If this isn't enough proof for you, then you clearly don't know your history."

"I-it's all good Mordred, more than enough proof for me," you respond nervously, which seems to mollify the Saber.

Finally, it was Archer's turn to go next. He scrutinized you, analyzed you. You feel yourself breakout in a cold sweat.

"...What's the name of your father?"

What?

"If you don't want to indulge in the question, it's fine. I just wanted to check if a hunch of mine is correct," he says cooly.

"Um, it's Fujimaru Shirou." You know your dad had some Magical potential, but it was your Okaa-san that had all the stronger Magecraft. What was his interest in him?

Archer seemed intrigued. "That's enough questions for me. I've wasted enough time." he then introduces himself. "I am the Archer-class Servant that has heeded your request. You may call me Emiya."

With that last statement, you H.U.D. updated itself to display your new Servants' names.

Strangely enough though, Director Animusphere was still displayed as Dead…

"...Enough. We have delayed reconnection long enough. Fujimaru, reestablish the link with Chaldea with your communicator."

The Director has snapped out of her reverie and was now frothing mad for some reason. Well, no reason not to listen to her.

You go to your recent calls and select the first and only one you see.

You hear Dr. Roman's voice slowly manifested, getting clearer and clearer by the second.

"...CQ, CQ. Hello, hello? Good, the connection is back. Nice to see you Ritsuka! We can probably send you rations and the like-"

The Doctor's eyes then went as big as saucers. Again. "WHAT THE-!? There are four massive magical signatures near you! Three of them are Servants and they seem to be linked to you! Are you the cause of the FATE System spiking?"

"Something like that. It happened when I looked at some magical prisms that the Director had while she was setting up a Magic Circle using Mash's shield," you answer. You also ask him a question yourself. "By the way what's the FATE System? Is it the reason why multiple Servants are calling me Master when people can usually only summon one?"

"Oh, it's a Heroic Summoning system that the previous Director created. You're right in your assumption that it allows you to have multiple Servants. It's ingenious and- Wait , did you say that the Director was-"

"HUUUUUH?! Why are you the one running the show, Romani?!" The Director became hysterical once more. "What about Lev? Where's Lev?! Put him on!"

"WAAA! Director?! You're alive!"

The Director didn't seem to register what Dr. Roman was saying. "Where is he Romani?! I need to know!"

Mordred groaned. "Shut up woman…"

The Director rounded onto you. "Fujimaru! Have YOUR Servant pipe down and apologize!" She strangely emphasized the word 'your', as if she was bitter towards you in particular.

"Hey I will, alright! No need to be so rude about it." you reply, very annoyed now.

"I don't care about platitudes, I gave you an order! Now DO IT!"

The Director then aggressively shoved you, with enough force to send you back a bit.

"..."

Something snaps within you, and a full day's worth of frustration and stress boils over. Well if that's what she wanted to play, then you could most definitely respond in kind. You shove her back in retaliation, knocking her off balance and onto her rear.

"Wah! Senpai! Director! Calm down!" said Mash in a panicked voice, rushing to separate the two of you.

Mordred began to laugh.

"Mordred. SHUT. UP."

You give the knight your fiercest glare, and it seems to cause them to pipe down. You accidentally activated your H.U.D. too, but you quickly shut it off. However, why did Gareth and Mash look afraid? Whatever, it's not important.

You turn back to the Director, still on the floor in shock. "You were right about having Mordred apologize. But that gives you no excuse to manhandle me."

You grab her by her shirt collar, getting up close and personal with her. "Do that again and I'll deck you."

You were beyond pissed. You didn't know what came over you, but you now wanted to cave the Director's face in. Your day was so shitty already, freezing your ass off thanks to some asshole getting all your clothes and drenching them in water, getting the snot kicked out of you by a particularly nasty Master Candidate for being a civilian, experiencing the stress of nearly dying and not being able to do anything as Mash was bleeding out, and now the recent verbal abuse by the Director. It was a miracle you had any bright spots on this day at all. You were done with taking things lying down.

But when you look the Director dead in the eye, you see something you didn't expect.

You didn't see a pompous Mage who was terrified now that someone was giving them their just desserts, you saw a normal girl. A girl who was scared and confused, desperately looking for a loved one.

…Why were you starting a petty argument now of all times? Hell, all things considered, maybe the Director could be having the shittiest day out of everyone in this motley crew. What the hell were you doing threatening to beat her up while she's hysterically calling for the status of her friend?

You let go of the Director, who looked like she was about to burst into tears. "...Sorry. I lost my temper. It won't happen again, Director. Punish me as you see fit," You give her the deepest bow you could muster.

She stood up, turning away from you, wiping her eyes and chuckling mirthlessly. "Then keep your Servants in line. You are the only person who can protect me, punishment will await at Chaldea," Her eyes were now devoid of any glimmer.

"...Yes Director,"

Gods… You felt like such a piece of shit…

"U-umm, I really feel like I shouldn't be here…" Dr. Roman says in a low voice after being silent for some time. Right, you had a job to do.

"So what's the situation at Chaldea, Doc?" you ask.

"Oh uh, Not good," he responds. "The current surviving staff is 20 people, including Da Vinci and I. I'm the highest ranking survivor unfortunately."

"Where's Lev, Romani." the Director asked quietly.

"...He was in the Command Room, right where the blast originated. There's no way he could have survived the explosion, I'm sorry, Director."

The Director's expression is unreadable. "...20 Survivors… What about the Master Candidates in their coffins?"

"Somehow, they managed to get out of the explosion alive. They're all in critical condition, we had to cryo freeze them to keep them all alive, ethics be damned. I'm not letting any of them die on my watch."

"...Alright then. Give me your report, Romani."

— — — — —

"...And that concludes my report. In summary, 80% of our manpower is lost and all we can do now is maintain basic functions. Currently, most of the staff are focused on repairing the Rayshift tech and maintaining CHALDEAS and SHEBA. As soon as external communications return, we'll request aid and begin repairing the facility."

The Director seemed to recover from your previous… assault and was listening intently.

"Good job Romani Archaman, I would have done the same in your position. As much as I hate to say it, you shall be in charge of Chaldea until we return. Make the Rayshift repairs your top priority. In the meantime, we will investigate the cause of Singularity F."

"Woah, I didn't think you were so brave, Director!" said the Director in adulation. "I thought you said you would rather die before you'd do any field work?"

"...You really don't know when to shut up Romani. I'd like nothing more than to go back now, but that will have to wait until the repairs on the Rayshift technology is completed." She continues her lecture to the Doctor. "This town only contains low-level monsters, and with four Servants none of them will be able to touch us. Accident or not, we Animuspheres pride ourselves on making the best of any situation we find ourselves in. As such Fujimaru, Kyrielight, and I will discover this Singularity's cause, but until Chaldea is restored we will not do anything else."

Dr. Roman nods. "Roger that. Best of luck to you director. We can communicate with each other in short bursts now, so feel free to ask for help when you need it. I'll be seeing you all soon."

With that, the connection shut off, and your party was all alone again, left to stew in its emotions.

— — — — —

The Director decided to head South first, towards the remnants of a bridge at the center of the city.

The journey was uncomfortably quiet, with the only talking you heard being between Mash and Gareth. Something about you being scary and Mash refuting that statement, you weren't really paying attention.

Emiya had stated that he was going to scout ahead, that he was going to the tallest building in the city to gauge the situation. You let him go without much acknowledgement.

Upon the bridge appearing on the horizon, you noticed that it had a very striking resemblance to a bridge from your hometown, right down to its paint.

"...Fujimaru, do you remember why we are doing this in the first place?"

The Director suddenly asks you a question. She hadn't talked to you for the past half-hour, so her approaching you was a sudden surprise.

"Well, something about solving this Singularity to fix human history."

She stares at you in disappointment. "That's it?"

"W-well, I did fall asleep near the beginning of your speech…" you utter uncomfortably.

"You don't remember anything, do you?" She narrows her eyes at you. You take this as a somewhat good sign, since she seemed to be returning back to her normal demeanor towards you, instead of her cold, polite facade earlier. Didn't stop her gaze from boring a hole through you though...

"Eh?" you utter, what did she mean by that?

Mash pops up to your left. "What are you talking about with the Director, Senpai?" She looks a bit worried, which is completely understandable considering the last time you and the Director talked.

"Well, the Director says that I forgot something from her earlier speech."

Mash thinks for a moment. "Right, you dozed off during the speech. But you were still a bit lucid. Are you sure you don't remember anything, Senpai?"

You nod. "Completely sure."

"Then. REMEMBER." The Director was about to poke you in the chest, but she rapidly drew her hand back in a panic. Right, you threatened to punch her the next time she touched you.

"It was a spur-of-of-the-moment thing, Director, I won't actually do it. Just forget about it," you tell her. That seemed to calm her down a bit.

You try to think back to the meeting, racking your brains for any information… You got nothing.

The Director sighed. "Fine. Let me educate you on your misconduct."

— — — — —

Chaldea's Central Command Room
4 hours before…

Director Olga Marie was becoming impatient.

The last Master Candidate, Ritsuka Fujimaru, was 10 minutes late to the briefing, and with every passing second, Olga got more and more agitated. This day had already been stressful, dealing with bureaucrats and the headache that was preparing for the arrival of the new recruits. She couldn't wait any longer.

20 seconds later, three people walked in.

The first person was a lethargic looking girl with vibrant red elbow-length hair, with some of it tied in a tacky side ponytail. She was wearing the standard issue Mystic Code, identifying her as the 48th Master Candidate. Following her was Mash Kyrielight, one of the members of A Team.

Olga was about to chew them out, but stopped when the third person walked in.

Entering with his ridiculous top hat and gentle smile was her only friend, Dr. Lev Lainur. Olga felt her face heat up for a brief moment.

Perhaps she would show some restraint. Only for him.

After Kyrielight led Fujimaru to her seat, directly in front of Olga's podium, the Director cleared her throat and began her speech.

"Not quite on time, but it looks like we're all here now. I am Director Olga Marie Animusphere and I welcome you all to the Chaldea Security Organization. You have all been selected for your rare aptitude for spiritrons and high Servant compatibility," Olga theatrically looked away for a moment before continuing. "Within this facility, you will be reborn as cutting-edge mages, in an unprecedented fusion of magecraft and science."

She looks back at her audience, gauging their response. Some seemed ecstatic. Those were hopelessly naive, but usable. Others were smug with their imagined superiority, bottom of the barrel hacks. And some, like Fujimaru, didn't even seem to be listening at all. Most likely washouts, but then again Wodime also didn't pay attention in the slightest.

"That said, remember this. Although you all possess unique talents, none of you are special. You are all inexperienced rookies, standing at the same starting line," Olga points at a section in the back. "In particular, the candidates from the Mage's Association seem to be acting like students. I will not hold your hand. If you want to succeed at Chaldea, you will follow orders and get results. Remember that everything I say is absolute, and that the status of your family means nothing to me. Every single one of you are just tools to be used to better humanity."

The crowd erupts in an uproar. How bothersome…

"QUIET! I will not allow for any argument!" Olga points towards the civilian section. "I don't see any of the civilians complaining, you so called 'esteemed Mages' should follow their example!"

Fujimaru's head shot upwards suddenly.  "…Yes ma'am!…*yawn*…"

…Did she just yawn? No, your ears must be playing tricks on you. No one would be stupid enough to brazenly show disrespect with their future boss right in front of them.

The recommendation candidates were particularly irate. "This is bullshit! Like hell I'll listen to you!" Shouted one woman.

"Status means nothing my ass! You're overstepping your bounds!" Exclaimed a man.

Olga felt a migraine begin to creep up. She decided to end this pointless discussion.

"I am only telling you what is going on right now. If you don't like it, then leave Chaldea at once. Not that there are any flights to send you home. If you want to trek 6,000 feet down a mountain and 20 miles to the nearest port, you are more than welcome to try," The Candidates all shut up. Ah, blissful silence…

"No dropouts? Good. Seriously, don't make me waste my time on such frivolous manners. Now back to the topic on hand. We at Chaldea have but one mission, ensuring the continuation of Humanity. To date, Chaldea has created a multitude of technologies to assist in this goal."

"LAPLACE, the Omniscient Cyber Daemon. The Global Environment Model, CHALDEAS. The Near-Future Observation Lens, SHEBA. The Heroic Spirit Summoning System, FATE. The Spiritron Calculation Engine, TRISMEGISTUS. Thanks to all of these advancements, we are now able to view Humanity's progress 100 years into the future." Looking into the audience Olga saw that everything was back on track. Most of the candidates had shut up, though she could still feel some hateful glares.

"Now I know what some of you are thinking. 'If you can view the future, surely you can shape it.' That line of thinking is both stupid and flat out wrong. Everything we do can change the future in ways we can't possibly imagine, as such all Chaldea does is observe the future, only intervening when something that threatens all of humanity appears."

Turning back once more, she gestures to CHALDEAS. "Look up. This is CHALDEAS, the crowning jewel of this organization. Through the latest advancements in magecraft we have a completely identical replica of the planet Earth. Through it we are able to view the future of our world and in turn, of Humanity using SHEBA. Normally it would be with teeming lights, indicating the presence of cities and of human life. But now…"

Olga gestures to the staff to power on CHALDEAS. "It looks like this. Six months ago every single light within CHALDEAS disappeared, and now, we are unable to view Humanity's future." Every single one of the candidates became horrified. Good, now they knew just what was at stake here.

"...Pretty lights…"

Okay, now Olga definitely knew she wasn't imagining things now. Was Master Candidate Fujimaru some kind of narcoleptic?

"*ahem* Anyways, our observations indicate that the Light of Humanity was only visible up to the year 2018. In other words, Humanity will become extinct in that year."

If she considered the previous outburst to her words to be an uproar, then what came after she uttered that sentence was a veritable tidal wave of noise.

"Settle down. I SAID SETTLE DOWN! Good. Obviously, this future should not be possible. There has been no economical or natural disaster to justify it, we can't explain how humanity suddenly disappeared. But, we may have made a breakthrough. After reviewing all the data we collected on the last 2000 years of history with LAPLACE and TRISMEGESTUS, we have found an anomaly that may be the cause, Spacial Singularity F, located in Fuyuki City, Japan in the year 2004."

Olga projected the Singularity using the large hologram projector for all to see. She heard some gasps from the audience. "After receiving approval from the U.N., Chaldea has elected to Rayshift into the Singularity and destroy it. Our experienced A Team, consisting of Master Candidates 1 through 8 will clear the way for B Team to arrive and set up a base camp for the rest of you all. Four of the top scorers from the Spiritron Dives will be shifting with A Team to gain experience, a sort of 'hit the ground running' scenario."

"I have high hopes for all of you, as does the rest of Humanity. You are all practically soldiers, as such you will obey all orders and be ready for a fight at all times." The Director pauses, before retrieving her PDA. "The Master Candidates that will accompany the A Team are as follows."

"Candidate No. 9: Takeshi Tohsaka."

"Candidate No. 14: Keith Walters."

Candidate No. 29: Maria von Stauffenberg."

"Candidate No. 48: Ritsuka Fujimaru."

*THUNK*

*SNNNNNOOOOREEEE*

Olga let out a sigh of barely concealed frustration. How did this girl get 98.8% Servant Compatibility?

"Master Candidate Fujimaru, get up."

*SNNNOOOORRREE*

The Director felt a blood vessel begin to throb in her forehead. "Master Candidate Fujimaru, get up this instant!"

Fujimaru stirred slightly. "Mmm. Five more minutes…"

This imbecile… "How dare you! I don't care that you are a top scorer, if you do not wake up right now, you will not be brought on this mission!"

Fujimaru looked up and looked Olga dead in the eyes. "Shuuut uuup… You ain't the boss of me," That elicited a few chuckles from the audience.

'You are a professional, Olga Marie. A professional…' The Director did everything in her power to not throttle this brat.

"Security, get her out. Get this petulant child out of my sight!"

Kyrielight rushed out of the audience towards Fujimaru. "That won't be needed, Director. I'll escort her out myself."

"I honestly don't care what you do Kyrielight, just get her out of the Command Room."

She then grabbed the disrespectful Fujimaru by the shoulders and escorted her off the premises. Olga was a fool to see any potential in her.

"Thanks for getting that old hag off me Mash…"

...

…She didn't care anymore, she was going to give Fujimaru a beatdown.

"THAT'S IT! I'M DONE WITH YOU!"

Olga smacked the disrespectful girl across the face and began grabbing onto her. The Director even attempted to rip off Fujimaru's Mystic Code, only stopped by Kyrielight. And someone who grabbed her from behind.

"Olga, calm down!" Lev was trying to restrain her, much to the Director's chagrin.

"Let go of me Lev! I'm going to teach that brat a lesson."

"Please Olga, just breathe! We have more pressing concerns at the moment."

She stuttered out a half-hearted deflection before ceasing her resistance.

"Fine. Fujimaru's replacement will be No. 47: Gabrielle Summers."

"...WHAT ARE ALL OF YOU GAWKING AT?! GET TO YOUR POSITIONS!"

Back in the Present…

"So uh, did you really have to talk about everything that happened during the orientation? Like, couldn't you have immediately just said the information you wanted me to know?" you ask.

"Sh-shut up! If I want to tell you some background information, then I'll tell you some background information! Without it, I would just be telling you some random terms you won't even understand."

"Well I suppose that's true… But I'm pretty sure you're embellishing a bit, I'd think I'd remember saying something as stupid as 'Pretty Lights'."

"But you did say that Senpai."

"Not another word Mash. Not another word."

The Director's monologue had certainly shed some insight on why you were all here. Now knowing the gravity of the situation, you see that what you heard from Mash was a very gross oversimplification. If you failed to find the source of the Singularity, humanity might go extinct in about 11 months.

You were snapped out of your rumination by a light coming from Mash's shield.

"The rations have arrived, Senpai." Mash then reached towards the back of the shield and pulled 3 pre-prepared meals and canteens.

From inside of her shield.

"...How?"

"I was a bit surprised too. Turns out that this shield has a compartment within it, which the Doctor can use as an anchor point for deliveries. I discovered it when Fou climbed into right into it."

As if on cue, Fou pops his little head out of the back of the shield. He hopped out and onto Mash's shoulder, just as he did last time, and tried to grab one of the rations.

"No Fou, don't be greedy. I'll give you some of my food later."

Mash tosses you and Director a bag and canteen each. Upon opening yours, you find a simple ham sandwich within it. It was nothing special, but food was food after all. The water was nice though, really great for your sandpaper dry throat.

While you were chewing idly, you felt someone tap you on your shoulder. It was Gareth.

"Hey uh, Master. We've arrived at the bridge."

Looking ahead once more, you are greeted by the bright red bridge you saw earlier. Now that you were up close to it, it looked much, MUCH bigger than what you saw earlier. The bridge was easily twice as big as the one from Kobe.

Gareth then asked you a quick question. "B-by the way… Master, do you happen to have Mystic Eyes?"

"Mystic what now?"

"Mystic Eyes. When a Mage's eyes gain Magical Circuits and are imbued with great power."

"Well… I don't think so?" you reply slightly flabbergasted. "That stuff sounds cool and all, but what does it have to do with me?"

"See, told ya she doesn't know," piped up Mordred. "Like I said, our Master is a newbie."

Gareth gave her a disapproving look. "Hey, don't be a tosser, Mo. We're Servants, we exist to help our Master," she finishes that last sentence with a pout.

"It's like you said Gareth, our job is to help our Master. However, that doesn't mean we have to babysit them."

Mordred then turns their helmed noggin towards you. "Are you 100% sure you don't have Mystic Eyes?"

"Yes."

"Despite activating them right in front of all of us?"

"Y-yes?" you respond with much less confidence.

Mordred sighs. "Whatever. You'll probably figure that shite out on your own."

"Mordred, language!"

"Feck off, ya goody-two shoes."

After that exchange of familial love, your party climbed a ramp and onto the bridge itself.

Right there to greet you in the middle of the bridge was Emiya, leaning on a destroyed car.

He was surrounded by the remains of numerous skeletons, which he probably killed with his… swords?

"Oi, you're an Archer, right?" questioned your mercurial Saber. "Why in the bloody hell are ya using swords?"

"Took you long enough Master." he says, completely ignoring Mordred. "By the way, I found some stuff you might find useful on the bodies of these monsters."

Archer tosses you a small pouch. Opening it, you find 6 Blazes of Wisdom, 3 of those Hero disks, and 2 strange blue gems.

Putting the rest of your stuff into the pouch and pocketing it, you ask Emiya for the debrief.

"So, what did you see?"

"There is a veritable sea of skeletons roaming around Shinto. While us Servants might be able to kill them all eventually, some might get past us and put you and your companion in danger. As such, I advise against going this way and we should go back the way we came," explained the sword wielding archer.

Mordred groaned in annoyance, before being elbowed in the gut by Gareth.

The Director contemplated this for a hot minute. "While that is very insightful, how do you know the name of that part of Fuyuki? You were just summoned here right?"

Emiya stands up straight. "Well, your FATE System has somehow restored my memories of a previous Grail War I participated in. I knew this town like the back of my hand."

Well that was certainly a reassuring thing to hear.

Then, Emiya's breath hitches. He projects two shortswords and throws them at you.

OH GOD HE THREW HIS SWORDS AT YOU!

You duck at the last moment, and looking behind you, you see something terrifying.

A dark figure, cloaked head to toe in sickly purple shadows, had just swung a katana at your neck. Emiya had just saved your life by getting you to duck.

His swords completely bisect the figure, who fades into a pile of jet-black dust. They then RETURN to him like boomerangs.

"Damn it. Looks like they've found us."

"THEY?! WHO'S THEY?"

As if to clarify, your communicator began to ring. You fumble with it for a second, before pressing the accept call button.

"RITSUKA! We've got a truck-load of bad news to unload to you. But first, you need to get out of there! Whether it's by fighting or running, it doesn't matter! Two enemy Servants have arrived at your position and are trying to box you into the bridge!"

The Director turns as white as snow. "Servants?! What are they doing here?!"

"They seem to be from a previous Holy Grail War, but something seems to be gravely wrong with them!" Dr. Roman rapidly explained.

Before anyone could move, the two Servants the Doctor said were coming arrived.

From the south, came a hooded woman, surrounded by the same shadows that engulfed your attacker. She was wielding a long pole-arm and walked almost leisurely towards your party.

From the north, arrived a completely black figure that you could only barely recognize as a human. Its right arm was grotesquely large and bulging, twitching in all sorts of directions. It looked like his arm was about to explode.

"Shit! We're surrounded! We've got no choice but to prepare to battle everyone!" you exclaimed.

The Lancer began to laugh maniacally. "You really think that you stand a chance against us? Pathetic! Let's mutilate them Assassin.

"...What a bother…"

In that single instant, both enemy Servants launched themselves at you. You only have a moment to act and you need to do it now. You activate your H.U.D. and prepare to give orders.

As you prepared to make a split-second decision, something pops into your mind. Assassins usually have Presence Concealment, and high ranks can only be detected by Clairvoyance and Intuition.

You happen to have two Servants with just those Skills.

You give out orders. Emiya, Mordred! Deal with Assassin! Mash, Gareth! Take care of Lancer!

Yes Master!

Emiya manifests a bow in the span of 2 seconds and launches several… swords at him…

Well it seemed to work, so you won't question it.

The hapless Assassin was skewered by a variety of blades and was finally launched backwards into a car after being pierced by a zweihander.

There was no trace of the Assassin left, but there was none of that dark dust that appeared when the previous Servant that attacked you.

"That bastard is still alive, Master," said Mordred, drawing closer to you. "He could be anywhere. Archer! Keep your eyes peeled!"

Meanwhile, Mash and Gareth were locked in a deadly melee with Lancer.

Gareth and Lancer were parrying blow after blow, trying to gain the upper hand. Mash tried to jump in multiple times to help, but was easily rebuffed by Lancer, who easily dodged her strikes.

Mash then went for a wide swing, which actually almost hit Lancer.

"Feh. How annoying." scoffed Lancer, who ducked down to avoid the strike.

The enemy Lancer then lands a powerful kick on your kouhai, sending her flying. Mash lands on her back and is slow to get up.

"Now that fly is out of the way, let us dance, fellow Servant of the Spear," she said, half-snarling.

"...You talk too much Miss."

Gareth launches herself at Lancer, and with a powerful thrust, she launches a torrent of prana from her lance.

Unfortunately, while the attack was certainly powerful, it also obscured Gareth's view. To your horror, Lancer had snuck behind Gareth.

"Gareth, behind you!"

With the experience of a seasoned fighter, she drew back her lance and swept it towards Lancer in a single motion. However…

"Oh god…"

Gareth's lance was diverted by Lancer's spear, and as she overshot past her adversary Lancer ran her spear through Gareth's shoulder.

"Ghh!"

"My, my.. That is a deliciously pained expression you are making Lancer." She pulls her spear out as roughly as she could, causing Gareth to scream out and drop her shield. "Let me see you squirm!"

You could see Mordred grip her sword tightly, not doing everything in her power to not bolt towards Gareth.

"Don't Mordred," said Emiya.

"Ya think I don't know that fuckface," replied Mordred through gritted teeth. "You focus on your job too."

Shit! You need to get pressure off of Gareth. Mash, get the enemy's attention!

Yes Master!

Mash quickly closes the distance, looking to knock Lancer away with a backhand. Lancer blocked the blow, with a growl.

"You troublesome insect. Since you can't wait your turn, I'll crush you like the insignificant piece of shit you are!"

She began to whale on to Mash, showering her with a flurry of blows, with every hit knocking her back ever so slightly towards the edge of the bridge.

You were about to order Mordred to assist her when Gareth suddenly gets up.

Gripping her lance, mana begins to flow from her.

"Hmph. Now I'm ticked off."

Her magical energy began to spike dramatically, and you soon realized just what she was doing.

Gareth, wait just a second.

Eh?

You quickly and meticulously reinforce her lance arm, the tell-tale neon green lines crisscrossing its entirety.

Now wreck this bitch up Gareth. You say telepathically with a wicked grin.

Language, Master. But much obliged.

Loading a canister into her weapon, the tip of her lance became sheathed in prana.

"Here I go!" she yells, looking to skewer the enemy Lancer.

Lancer momentarily stopped her assault on Mash, her eyes growing wide upon seeing Gareth charging at her. She tried to dodge, but by then it was already too late.

Slamming into Lancer's side, Gareth rapidly stabbed her over and over again, with each thrust releasing a jet of prana, exacerbating Lancer's already debilitating wounds.

"Now the finishing blow! Ira Lupus!"

Gareth finishes Lancer off with one last upward strike, with the last prana release being the largest. Upon making contact with her, Lancer freaking DETONATED, being reduced to bloody chunks that rapidly turned to dust.

"Eww… Now I'm covered in blood…" said Gareth with a whimper. "Gross…"

Right next to you, Mordred relaxed ever so slightly. She even chuckled a bit.

Now all that you had to do was find Assassin…

Your blood goes cold. You can feel the chill of death upon you and your chest begins to feel like there is something crushing it.

Before anything can come of it though, Mordred throws her sword at something behind you and Emiya fires off more swords.

"Zabani-grk!"

Mordred calmly strides up to the shadowy figure, pinning him under her boot. "You've caused me a lot of unnecessary worry. Now begone."

She then stabbed Assassin through the head, twisting her sword to make sure that Assassin is truly dead this time.

As the enemy faded away, you released a breath you didn't realize you had been holding in.

— — — — —

"Hmph. Seems like you have potential." The Director, with Fou in her arms strode past you towards Gareth. "Keep up the good work, Fujimaru."

Placing Fou back down on the ground, the Director held her hand out to Gareth's wound and healed it for her. Unlike the magecraft from your Mystic Code, the wound was completely healed, with even Gareth's blood going back inside of her and her armor repairing itself.

"Blimey! I'm back in tip-top shape. Thanks Miss!" said Gareth, flashing her signature bright smile.

"It's of no concern, Lancer.," replied the Director. "Now Fujimaru, I think that it is time to reestablish-"

The Director's order is interrupted by the clanging of metal on metal. Right next to her a sword was sticking out of the bridge. Followed by another, and another… and 10 more…

The already dark sky was blotted out by a veritable storm of blades, and they were all on a course to hit your position.

"TAKE COVER!" yelled out Emiya.

Mash rushes over to you and the Director. "Senpai! Director! Get beneath my shield!"

You were terrified, and you could do nothing but just wait for the maelstrom to end, forced to listen to the numerous blades hammering Mash's shield.

After what felt like an eternity, the storm abated. Mash peeked out. "...It seems like the attack is over."

Your terror subsides. What was that? Who could have done this?

"Director, you can let go of me now."

"What?" The Director soon realized just what she was doing, and let go with a blush. "Y-you saw nothing."

"Sure as hell felt something though. ~"

"Shut up Fujimaru!"

Emiya, Mordred and Gareth emerged from the ruined carcass of a wrecked semi-truck.

"Uwaa… that was scary…" said Gareth, quivering with each word uttered as she retrieved her shield.

"What kind of wanker shoots swords as projectiles?!" said an exasperated Mordred.

Emiya was silent. Looking only towards the south-west, you followed his gaze and saw four more objects flying towards the bridge.

Emiya looked like he was about to panic. "Four of them?! We won't be able to get out in time… Whatever! Everyone, get off the bridge! I'll take care of the Broken Phantasms!"

As he said that, he projected a sword that looked like a drill and fired it. You noticeably felt your mana level drop after he did that though.

"Broken Phantasms!? What do you mean by-" Before the Director could finish that sentence, she was scooped up by Gareth.

"Come on now luv. It's time to go."

Mash saw what Gareth was doing and began to carry you in a princess carry as well. Trying to keep the blush off of your face as Mash gripped your thighs, you found that you didn't really have too.

Despite noticeably lagging behind Gareth and Mordred, Mash was running really, REALLY fast. Your face was buffeted by wind and you're pretty sure some of your hair went up your nose.

Emiya still hadn't moved from his spot. Every time he shot one of those drill swords, you felt more and more mana drain from you. Soon, you felt exactly how you felt in the command room, tired and delirious.

You look at your Mana level in the corner of your H.U.D.

'Mana: 75 / 200 MP'
'Replenishment is heavily advised'

What a shame, you could really have gone for one of those shitty tasting silver apples…

Looking lazily to your left, you see several brilliant explosions. Your vision had gotten fairly blurry though so you couldn't exactly figure out what was going on.

You hear your Director arguing with someone. Something about replenishing your mana…

The last thing you saw before you blacked out for the third time today was another projectile coming towards the party and one last bright flash of light.

— — — — —

"Master? Master, wake up!"

Her Senpai had just blacked out for the third time today, and once again Mash felt like she was about to lose her composure completely.

Emiya had stayed back to deal with what he had called Broken Phantasms. According to the Director they were equivalent to high-yield military-grade bombs, able to annihilate anything in their blast radius. However, in order to destroy them, Emiya had to launch several Broken Phantasms of his own, having to fire four of them.

Thanks to that, by the time everyone had gotten across the bridge, Senpai was already dangerously low on Mana.

As the enemy Broken Phantasms exploded in brilliant flashes of light, the Director was desperate to solve the dilemma.

"Shit. Kyrielight, fetch me Fujimaru's communicator," ordered the Director. Mash complied, frantically rifling through the pockets of her Master's Mystic Code.

Finding it, she passes it to the Director.

"Ah, Director," said the Doctor. "It seems like you all are safe. Now about that bad news-"

"Not now Romani! We need to replenish Fujimaru's Mana and we need to do it fast." ordered the Director. "Send some of the surplus Golden Apples our way."

"Oh-um… The room they were in is… well…"

The Director sighed in frustration. "What happened, Romani?"

"The room they were in is currently buried under 5 feet of concrete rubble."

Mash heard the Director mutter vehemently underneath her breath.

"Fine then. Are there any notable points of interest in the area?"

Dr. Roman's eyes dart across the unseen screen, before stopping in a particular spot.

"There's a relatively intact workshop 7 klicks northeast of your position, you might find some potions or something in there."

After saying this, the Doctor began to narrow his eyes, before they widened and his expression became one of utter terror.

"Something's coming."

On cue, one last projectile streaked across the jet black sky. Mash could make out every last detail on it.

It was a sword, shaped exactly like a drill. There were only two swords shaped like that, and that sure wasn't the sword of King Gilgamesh.

"Caladbolg…"

"CALADBOLG?!" the Director had begun to panic once more.

If it was anything like the Caladbolg of myth, there was no way anyone here could get out of the blast radius in time.

Mash couldn't do anything again… just like when Senpai was dying right in front of her in that accursed Command Room. She was powerless to do anything…

"Stand back, Shieldy! I'll use my Noble Phantasm to divert the projectile." yelled out Mordred, who pushed her back.

"But then Senpai will fall into a coma!" cried out Mash. Senpai had little mana left, if Mordred fired her Noble Phantasm now…

"A coma we can wake her up from the second we get mana! So stand back!"

Mordred raised her sword to activate her Noble Phantasm, but before she could do so, another streak of light intercepted the Broken Phantasm.

"ANSUZ!"

Caladbolg detonated prematurely, bathing everyone in light.

Looking for the source of the spell, Mash spies a feral looking man in blue and white robes standing on a large pile of rubble and holding a distinctive wooden staff. He gave off the distinct Magical Signature of a Servant.

"Well look what we have here. Some wanderers."

He hops down and begins to meander over towards everyone.

"I assume the unconscious red-head with the dynamite body is the Master right?" he says, giving Senpai a look, his eyebrow raised. Mash moved herself defensively in front of her. If this man was after Senpai's body, she didn't care that he saved them. She would protect her Master.

"Hey! Stop looking over Ritsuka!" vehemently protested Dr. Roman. "Do that again and I'll- HOLY SHIT! THIS GUY'S A TOP TIER SERVANT!"

"O-oi! If you're here to just ogle our Master, then you can buzz off!" said Gareth, with an uneasy conviction in her voice, pointing her lance at the unknown Servant. "Who are you and what do you want with us?"

"To help you, and in exchange I ask you to help me."

Mordred strode past Gareth and got right in the mysterious man's face.

"Why the hell should we trust a loony like you? How do we know that ya don't have any sick ulterior motives?" she accused, shoving her finger into the man's chest.

"Ooh, feisty! To answer your question, I can get your Master to wake up and I can assist you all in your quest to resolve what happened in this place. In return, you help me defeat the head honcho of this place, you wayward Saber," he proposes, a sly smile creeping onto his face. "Plus, it helps that you're all indebted to me, I did just save all your lives free of charge."

Mordred looked like she was about to punch him, but was quickly pulled away by Gareth before she could do anything.

The man turns to the Director. "If I could be allowed to Ms. Wayward Spirit, I can temporarily fix the girl's Mana problem."

"How do you intend to do that?" questioned the Director. "And why are you calling me that?"

"No reason. Anyways, I intend to do it like this," He points his hand at Senpai. "Berkano."

When the man said that word, a symbol flashed above Senpai. A green rune.

Senpai began to stir. "Mmm… What happened, Mash? Did we get out? How'd I get more mana?"

She grabbed onto Mash's arm, dragging herself up.

"The Caster Servant of this Holy Grail War."

Emiya walked over to the party. He seemed visibly winded. "Sorry about earlier. I ran out of Prana and couldn't deal with the last Broken Phantasm."

The newly identified Caster chuckled upon seeing Emiya. "Man, who would've thought that I would see you with that coat ever again, Archer."

Emiya scoffs, looking at the wolf-like man in disbelief.

"Who would've thought that I would see you wearing something other than spandex and be without your faithful spear, Cú Chulainn."

Chapter 3: Prologue: Section 3

Notes:

So. Magical Ruby, the good ol' gremlin Kaleidostick. I don't regret her addition to the team one bit, she's a good source of comic relief for the squad, not to mention one of the reasons that this Ritsuka doesn't black out every few seconds due to Mana Deprivation.

But upon checking the Singularity F Map, the place that Ritsuka and the Questers picked her up in, Rin's House, is supposed to be a smoldering crater. A bit of an oversight on my part, but this was a while back, so I guess kid me just decided to roll with it.

What's done is done though, no use moaning over it now.

I also quite liked most of the heart to hearts here, though I personally feel that they are quite dated. Some of the dialogue made me cringe personally, but you guys be the judge of that.

Anyways, hope y'all enjoy this one.

Chapter Text

"Wha-what?"

You had just woken up from your impromptu blackout, so maybe you were hearing things but…

"Did you just say that the Servant in front of me is Cú Chulainn, but he's a Caster?" You ask, gesturing at the man you were pretty sure was supposed to be a Lancer.

The man bows. "The one and only, you little lady. Got put into a Caster Class thanks to my side-job. Got to ask though, are you of age? Don't want to be flirting with a minor."

"I'm 17." you respond, bristling with annoyance " You have a reason for being here other than finding out if I'm legal or not, right? Why did you save us?"

"True, true. We can flirt later," he replies somewhat apologetically. You already greatly preferred his Lancer Version.

You also check your Mana levels, as you weren't light-headed anymore.

'Mana: 125 / 200 MP'

Huh. So that was that warm feeling you felt earlier. You should thank Caster later, even if he was... unsavory.

Dr. Roman spoke up. Mash must have nabbed your communicator while you were out. "Now back to the topic at hand. Caster, you offered a deal, right?"

"Indeed I do, mage from across reality. You lot aren't from around here, and you don't look like you seem to be allied with Saber's clique judging from the fact that you turned Lancer over there into a fine red paste. I commend your technique, young lady," That last remark caused Gareth to laugh and rub her head in embarrassment.

"I also sense no ill intentions from any of you, but just to make sure, who are you?" He asks. "What organization are you lot affiliated with?"

The Doctor began to explain. "Well…"

"...and that's the gist of what the goal of Chaldea is and why we're here." summarized the Doctor. "Before we continue though, let me clarify something, Caster. You're the sole surviving Servant of this Holy Grail War, is that correct."

"Yep," he replies. "After the entirety of the city went up in flames, something happened to the grail. Corrupting mud sprung out of the grail, and it did… something to Saber."

Gazing off into the distance he continued explaining. "The crazy bastard went on a rampage, defeating all the remaining Servants one after the other, turning them into her lackeys through the mud. To make matters worse, those skeletons began to pop up in droves. Can't go anywhere in this place without encountering a horde of them."

He returns his gaze to the group. "Now this botched Holy Grail War can only end in one of two ways. One Saber kills and converts me. Two…"

"You kill Saber and the War ends," Interjected Emiya. "It's why you zeroed in on us. You can't take her out yourself, so you want us to help you."

"Heh, someone's knowledgeable. If I hadn't known better, I'd have thought you had been miraculously uncorrupted. Yeah, you're right on the nose in that assumption. But it ain't exactly a bad deal is it? Your goal is to fix this anomaly and mine is to end this madness. Seems mutually beneficial."

"That is a rational proposition," stated the Director frankly. "But then who will be your Master?"

"The attractive young lady over there," replied Caster, pointing to you. You half considered punching him in the gut. "No offense Ghost Lady, even though you've got amazing circuits, you've got no aptitude to be a Master. Being dead also isn't exactly helping your case. Is it some kind of curse?"

The Director huffed angrily. "Shut up! Why do you care? Fujimaru, he's in your hands. Use him- Wait what did you say before that?"

"What? Don't say that you didn't know you were dead."

You blanched in disbelief. "Wait, she's actually dead?! I thought the Mana here was just screwing up my Magecraft!"

"Pssht, there ain't enough mana in the atmosphere to interfere with even low-tier Mystic Eyes like yours. Yeah, she's 100% dead."

You looked to the Director in concern and saw that she was weakly chuckling.

"I'm… I'm not dead. I'm right here! Human souls aren't even able to Rayshift, they would just dissipate. So your claim is bullshit Caster!" she finished, pointing at him, a panicked look in her eyes.

"...Director. Do you remember the bad news I was about to share before we were interrupted?"

The Director quickly turned to Dr. Roman, with wild indignation. "Not now Romani! I don't need you to butt in right now! That can wait until after we've cleared up this stupid mistake!"

"I'm afraid Caster is right, Director," Another voice cuts in on the Doctor's side. It was that Da Vinci woman who oversaw your Spiritron Dive earlier. However, there was no trace of the cheery persona that she had shown you earlier, there was only a tired and weary woman.

That got the Director to stop her tirade. "Wh-what?..."

"We've found your body within the rubble. Cause of death was catastrophic head trauma. To say your body wasn't in good condition would be an understatement. If you want to come back to Chaldea, I need you to listen carefully-"

The Director wasn't listening, with every word that Da Vinci said, her breathing became more and more panicked, beginning to hyperventilate. By the time Da Vinci began talking about the condition of her corpse, her knees buckled and she violently vomited the contents of her stomach onto the ground below her.

"Director!" Mash quickly went to her side, catching her midfall.

You didn't blame the Director for reacting so intensely, it was perfectly understandable. You wouldn't know just how badly you would react to the news that you had been dead the entire time.

"Da Vinci! What the hell?!"

"She needed it to be given to her straight Romani. If we had beaten around the bush, we would have gotten nowhere."

The two staff at Chaldea begin to engage in an intense argument, and you begin to get stressed out. Not helping things was Mordred, IMMEDIATELY deciding to loudly and obnoxiously ask for the both of them to shut up, with Gareth nagging her to shut up in turn.

With the noise mounting, and an intense pounding in your head forming, you decide to pull the plug.

"ENOUGH!"

Everyone goes silent.

"Arguing with each other is going to get us nowhere. Right now we need to calm the fuck down and focus on getting stuff done. Doc, while I was half-passed out, I heard you say something about a Magus's Workshop. Could you tell me where it is?"

"Right. It's 7 kilometers northeast of where you currently are. It's a western-style mansion, no way you could possibly miss it."

You nod in acknowledgement. "Alright then, can you walk, Director?" You ask, holding your hand out to assist her.

She meekly nods, taking your hand. "Then let's go. We'll head to the workshop to resupply and regroup before we make our next move."

— — — — —

If the walk after your fight with the Director was uncomfortably silent, then it was now oppressively so. Everyone had something or another on their mind.

Most of all was Director Animusphere, and rightfully so. She was basically a dead man walking.

As you trekked past all the burning and wrecked houses. A particularly big one reveals itself on the horizon.

"The Doctor was right. I'd have to be blind to miss a house like that one."

A rustic, two-story mansion revealed itself, only looking slightly charred from the fire. One wing looked to have collapsed, but the rest of the house looked to be in fairly decent condition.

"Hold on you lot," said Caster. "Got to disable the bounded field."

While Caster got to work, you got a good look at the state of the rest of the party.

Mash looked downright depressed. You couldn't put your finger on it, but maybe it had something to do with her showing in the fight against Lancer.

Gareth looked concerned, constantly shifting her gaze between Mash, Mordred and the Director. You could empathize with her worry.

Speaking of Mordred and the Director, you still couldn't see what Mordred's face looked like, but judging from her body posture, you could tell that she wanted to do something rash. You didn't know what it was, but you sure as hell hoped she didn't do it now.

As for the Director… She was a mess. Her hair had become disheveled and her eyes puffy and red. She had a classic 1000 yard stare, not responding to anyone.

Finally, Emiya seemed to be deep in thought as he looked upon the mansion. You could swear that you saw a fleeting look of wistful nostalgia from him.

"Alright! I've got it. Let's head in now."

Passing the gate, you see that the once carefully maintained garden had become a crackling bonfire. Too hot to even approach.

The door to the mansion was slightly ajar. You pull it open and enter.

Inside was a trashed living room. Bookshelves, dishes, various decorations, they were all scattered about haphazardly.

"Alright everyone, we'll rest here for an hour," you say, taking a seat on the dusty couch. "After that, we reconvene here to discuss what we'll do next."

You fetch your bag with all of the materials you have acquired in the past 2 hours. "Before you go though, have some Blazes. They'll strengthen you once you absorb the Mana," Giving each servant, sans Caster, two Blazes each, everyone then went off to do their own thing.

Mordred and Caster went off to watch for enemies outside, most notably the enigmatic enemy Archer. Emiya and Mash went off to look for supplies in the other rooms. Gareth and the Director both took seats on the other couch across from you, with the armor-clad girl desperately trying to comfort the catatonic Director.

As for yourself, you didn't know what to do. All you wanted to do was lay down on this couch and sleep, but you didn't know when anyone would need you for something.

You sigh, sitting up straight. Might as well go help Mash and Emiya in their search for supplies, considering it was what the party was here for anyways. But you stop once you get a look at the Director.

She wasn't even trying to care anymore, simply staring off into the distance while Gareth was haplessly trying to lift her mood.

"Y-you're here now! Isn't that enough proof that you're alive?" Her impassioned voice fell on deaf ears.

There were many disadvantages to having the Director catatonic. Despite the fact that she often panicked in tense situations, she was usually quite competent when it came to leading, getting people to listen to her and making decisive decisions. Plus, if she's a lethargic mess, she'll be a liability in battle. You couldn't babysit her if you were swarmed by enemies or focused on Servants.

But the primary reason for you doing what you planned to do was much more simple and fairly irrational. She was in a shitty situation that blew yours out of the water, who gave a damn if she was a bit abrasive. She was hurting and you just wanted to ease her mind, if only a little.

You dig into your pocket and fetch the other half of the sandwich that Chaldea had sent. It was slightly squashed and a tad bit too warm, but its condition was still passible. You stand up and move over to the other couch, taking a seat next to the Director.

"Hey. I know you're probably not in the mood for food, but since the contents of your lunch are probably sizzling on the pavement near the bridge, I figured you could take mine."

The Director takes the sandwich and just… stares at it wordlessly. Not the best reaction in the world, which took you back to square one. But while you were racking your mind for what to say next, the Director croaked out a single sentence.

"Why? Why are you wasting your time and effort on a doomed person like me?"

You sigh. "Because I don't intend for you to stay a doomed person, okay."

She stares at you with her dull eyes, unbelieving. "I won't be able to return no matter what happens. As soon as this Singularity is resolved I will cease to be, nothing will save me."

"You don't know that. There might be things we may not have considered, plans we haven't taken yet. There's always hope you know," you respond.

The Director lets out a humorless laugh. "You're too naive for your own good, Fujimaru…"

"And what's wrong with that?"

She stops, staring at you once more. "I'll never give up on you, even if you think you're too far gone. Call me naive, call me a stupid kid, I don't care. It won't waver my conviction."

You muster up your resolve, and say one last thing. "My father taught me that great people always keep their promises, no matter the circumstances. So I'll promise you this Director. I'll get you back to Chaldea, I swear this on every fiber of my being." you say with 100% confidence.

The Director's expression is an indecipherable mask. She stays silent for about 10 seconds, just staring at you. You feel a bead of sweat trickle down the back of your neck.

After what felt like an eternity, her gaze returned to the sandwich in her hands, unwrapping it. She takes a shaky bite, before her face scrunches up in disgust.

"Urgh… this tastes disgusting…"

Yet she continued to eat.

She stops briefly, looking back at you. "You will keep your word, right?"

"Hey, I already said I would. I did swear on every fiber of my being y'know."

A small smile becomes visible on her face, and she laughs, sincerely this time. The Director mutters something under her breath, you hear her mention your name.

"Pardon me, did you say something else?"

"Yes. Thank you, Fujimaru," Her eyes now have a small glimmer of life in them, a good sign.

"No problem Director."

"Now," she says, slowly getting to her feet. "I have to relieve myself, as strange as it is. Your horrid sandwich was so bad, it somehow managed to upset my nonexistent stomach."

You chuckle. "Pretty sure there's no working plumbing left in the city. You sure you can't just go outside?"

"I will do no such thing," she responds, giving you a disapproving look.

The Director disappeared, going upstairs to find a toilet.

Gareth was staring at you with her jaw slightly open, and you feel a bit annoyed.

"Hey, if you're gonna keep your yapper open, might as well put something in there," you say, place one of the Blazes in her hand into her mouth.

"Mmph, oh sorry," she replies, swallowing the Blaze without a care in the world. "I shouldn't have been staring. But that was a smashing pep-talk, Master."

"You really think so?"

"Yep. While I was mucking about, you cheered Miss Director up with some brilliant rhetoric. You looked cool there luv," Gareth adds, giving you her usual bright smile.

"But, I agree with the Director on the count that you are a bit naive," she adds, chastising you. "You usually shouldn't make a promise like that unless you already have a concrete plan. But from what I've seen from you Master, you'll figure something out and definitely keep your promise."

Wow, she was just like an older sister. You'll try living up to her expectations. "Thanks for the vote of confidence Gareth. Make sure to keep an eye on the Director for me, will you?" you ask of her, making your way towards where Emiya and Mash had gone.

"Of course luv. Hope you find some good stuff with Archer and Miss Shielder!"

— — — — —

Fujimaru was right, Olga might as well have been relieving herself in a sink.

But while she was alone, she now had some time to think.

Fujimaru was naive and crass, that much she knew. But…

"Hmm. She didn't have to do that…"

Olga sighed, weren't the two of them fighting just an hour ago?

"I'll get you back to Chaldea, I swear this with every fiber of my being."

She gave her some hope, as small as it was. It doesn't mean she has to get buddy-buddy with Fujimaru, but she should repay her kindness. After all, Fujimaru had proved herself to be competent enough through her dispatch of two enemy Servants and it was good to have a trustworthy subordinate in a situation like this.

Perhaps she'll stop nagging her for the time-being. Well, as long as Fujimaru didn't say anything stupid.

After walking a short distance, you see that Emiya and Mash had gone downstairs, where the door to a basement was open.

Upon entering you see them rifling through several boxes at the moment. Emiya was browsing through a crate full of…

"Holy crap, are those precious gems?"

Emiya looks up. "Ah, you're here Master. Here to help?"

"Yeah. The owner of this house must have been loaded…"

"Most likely," He points towards where Mash is. "You can help Mash with her side of the room if you want."

Your gaze follows where he is pointing, where you see your kouhai digging into a box, her back to you. "Will do," you reply to Emiya.

Sauntering over to Mash, you arrive to see her engrossed in sorting various artifacts and eating a Blaze. "These blue gems seem useful…" She puts the last of the crystal into her mouth. "Ugh... I wonder if I can absorb the mana in a different way…"

"Whatcha doin' Mash?"

She jumps in surprise. "Ack! S-senpai! When did you come here?"

"I came here a minute ago. So, what can I do to help?"

"Oh, uh, you could start over there I guess, Senpai," she replies, pointing towards a small pile of cardboard boxes.

"Okie dokie."

Opening the first box, you find nothing of note, only some old clothes. As such, you put everything back and gently placed it off to the side. Going through the rest of the boxes, you find that they are all filled with old toys, miscellaneous expired reagents, and holiday decorations. You treat them the same as the first box, carefully stacking them atop each other.

"Well, there's nothing here. Mash, any luck on your end?" you turn to her.

You couldn't see her face, but she seemed to be staring despondently at a box.

Peeking inside the box she was staring at, you see some more gems. So why did Mash look so sad?

You tap her on the shoulder. "Hey. You good Mash?"

She didn't respond. "Helloooo. Earth to Mash," you say, waving your hand in front of her face.

"Eh? Oh, sorry Senpai, I spaced out for a little while," she turns to you, with a painfully forced smile. "Anything happen while I was distracted?"

"No. Looks like something's weighing on your mind. Are you alright?"

"I am Senpai," She was straining to maintain her smile.

You lock your eyes with her. "Please be honest with me Mash. Are you okay?"

Her smile falters. "I-I'm sorry for lying," She averts her gaze, shame evident on her face.

"Hey, it's nothing to be ashamed about. I just want to know if you're in the right state of mind."

Mash looks back at you. "...I know that this is inconvenient considering our position, but I have bad news. Even though you've been commanding so well, I'm a weak and defective Servant. I was barely able to keep up in a Servant battle and I… can't use my Noble Phantasm."

"...So? You've been a good enough Servant. You'll definitely be able to get stronger later, so what difference does it make?"

"It's not that simple Senpai!" she exclaims. "I was useless against Lancer, all I could do was take her hits. And call it gut instinct or the power of hindsight, but if I had access to my Noble Phantasm I could have stopped the Enemy's Broken Phantasm without anyone getting hurt or you passing out. If Caster wasn't there or if Mordred was injured, then thanks to my incompetence you would have-"

You interrupt her with a light chop to the head.

"Ow! Senpai, what was that for?!"

"Oi, it's not good to dwell too much on the past," you tell her. "What matters now is that everyone got out of there alive."

"We'll figure something out, alright. Noble Phantasms aren't mastered in only a day after all. Until then, let's focus on the present."

A slight flush appeared on Mash's face. Why was th-

You're holding her hands…

You quickly let go. "S-so remember that okay!"

Mash smiled. "Thank you Senpai… I will stop dwelling on the past and I'll definitely try to unlock my Noble Phantasm soon!" She says with new vigor.

Damn… That smile should be a national treasure…

"Enough flirting you two. There's one more pile over there, Master."

"FLIRTING?! WHO'S FLIRTING?!"
"F-flirting?! I'm not flirting?!"

"Heh. That's one trope on my bingo card," Your opinion of the Archer dropped substantially.

"Eat shit, Emiya!" You throw an emerald at his face.

He lazily dodges the gem. "Get on with it, Master.~"

Cursing him under your breath, you walk over to the last pile of boxes. Right in the front, there was a wooden chest that looked like it would fit perfectly within an RPG. You removed a crate perched on top of it and found that it was unlocked, so you opened it and took a peek inside. Huh, there's nothing-

*Thwack!*

"Woo-wee! Looks like I'm finally free!"

Your head was fucking throbbing. What the hell was that?! You thought you heard a woman's voice…

Getting back to your feet, you find yourself face to face with a… stick?

"You're a guy and you're already bonded with someone who doesn't want to share, so that leaves you, carrot-top!"

The stick resembled a wand from a vintage magical girl show, but it moved fluidly, as if it was alive. It turned towards you.

"Anyways kid, I wanna make a deal with you. I'm the Magical Stick of Justice and Love, Ruby! Wanna become a magical girl and save the universe? It's a good deal if I say so myself!"

"I'm sorry what?"

The stick named Ruby gasped. "Oh this is horrible! What kind of girl doesn't want to become a Magical Girl?! If I had eyes, I'd be bawling right now!"

"Yeah, magical girl shows weren't the thing for me, I was always more of a fan of sappy shoujo and mecha. If it's any consolation, I watched a couple episodes of Sailor Moon."

The sentient magical girl wand named Ruby was currently up in your face. "Mecha is lame! It's only mindless destruction and convoluted storylines with no depth!"

...

Heresy. This piece of plastic was a heretic.

"Hmph, well magical girl shows are formulaic and overly saccharine!" If this thing disses your interests, then you'll diss its interests in turn.

"Wow, someone is rude! That shows that you weren't paying attention to any of the Sailor Moon episodes you claimed to watch."

You restrained the instinct to snap the thing in half. "That's rich coming from you! I bet you've never even looked at a mecha anime in your life! You probably don't know the difference between a Gundam and an EVA!"

Emiya looked like he was about to burst out with laughter. Fucking asshole.

"S-senpai. I think you should calm down. Isn't it just anime?"

You whirl around to Mash. "No Mash. It's more than just anime. I must defend Mecha's honor," This was serious business. Once everything is over, you'll definitely show her the joys of Mecha. Or maybe Shoujo if she didn't like it.

The thing huffs. "Such an impertinent kid… Well, since you're the only available human alive I sense. I guess I've got to form a contract with you, as unpleasant as it is…"

You sigh. "And why would I do that?"

"Oh nothing. Just the ability to have INFINITE MAGICAL ENERGY."

…Well that certainly got your attention. But, you still have some skepticism about the deal. This thing definitely seemed like a shady individual. "What's the catch then? I know for a fact that you have an ulterior motive."

"What? I just want to get out of this place, and you want to save the world. I'm just an average altruistic kaleido-stick. Plus, there aren't any class-cards at the moment, but that's beside the point," Ruby begins to wiggle in an irritating fashion. "And I'm not lying about the infinite magical energy. All of my power could be right at your fingertips, but only if you form the contract."

You carefully weigh your choices. On hand, you'd have to deal with this thing's biased anime taste and annoying demeanor. But on the other hand, you would have something to deal with the mana problem you are experiencing, and a possibility for a plethora of other powers. You had scanned Ruby once she began her monologue, and found that she had JAW DROPPING stats.

'Magical Ruby Lv. EX
Mana: Immeasurable
ATK: Variable
DEF Mod: Indestructible'

You wondered what variable attack meant… Also why was Emiya facing the wall now?

Well, whatever. You'll ask him why he did that later. "Fine. I'll bite. What do I have to do, Ruby?"

Ruby let loose an annoying chuckle. "Well first, CATCH!"

"Gah!"

Mash tumbles into you, knocked to the ground by a swift strike to the knees by the stick, causing both of you to fall.

"WHAT THE FUCK, RUBY! What was that-... for…"

Mash had begun to get up, and somehow she was… straddling you…

You can feel her thighs on your body…

And at that moment, your brain had left the universe.

"@*&$&$#^*@&!^#&*!#^*(!&#(&%!()&!!?!?!"

"SENPAI! You're bleeding! Oh my god, did you get a concussion?!"

You can vaguely feel Ruby swab your face and mutter something about step 1, but you were too busy being trapped within your mind in equal parts confusion, delight, and horror.

Mash gets off you to your disappointment and relief. "Emiya! We need to get that thing now!"

"Sorry Mash, no can do."

Mash looks flabbergasted. "Wh-what do you mean?!"

While not turning around, he begins to lecture her. "Ruby over there was doing exactly what she was asked to do. Judging from the sound Master made, something happened that caused her to bleed. And collecting blood is the first step in a… certain Three-Step Contract I discovered during a Holy Grail War in London."

"Huh?! Then she should have just asked Senpai for some blood! There was no need for her to get concussed! And why aren't you turning around Mr. Emiya?!"

"Oh, just a gut feeling."

"What the heck is that supposed to mean?!"

Ruby began to laugh once more. "Ufufufu… Oh that nosebleed wasn't caused by a concussion Ms. Shielder…"

And suddenly you regain clarity, and there is now only one thought on your mind.

You shoot upwards with newfound vigor, wiping the remaining blood off your face and healing the blood vessels with a little mana.

You feel nothing but infinite contempt for the wand. You roughly grab it by the handle. "Listen here you little shit. When I'm through with you, you're going to be nothing more than a glorified pink plunger."

"And that's Step 2!"

Huh?

"Now… How were they? Pretty plush right?" You then try to snap ruby in half over your knee, but only have a sore leg and hand for your troubles. And speaking of your hand…

"WHY THE HELL ARE YOU STUCK TO MY HAND?!"

"Oh it's nothing, that's just Step 2 of the contract taking effect!" The wand then came close to your ear and began talking in a whisper. "But that's not important right now. You like the Shielder, don't you? Not in the fling sort of way, but you truly and sincerely love her. It's why you reacted so intensely to her touch. Am I right?"

Your face begins to burn. "Sh-SHUT UP!" You try to throw Ruby, but then a jolt runs through your body.

Emiya turns around. "What's going on? The contract should have been finalized already."

"Senpai? Are you alright?"

You don't notice Mash's remark. You see your other hand moves entirely on its own, gripping Ruby's staff.

Ruby chuckles once more in that goddamned pretentious tone. "Ufufufu… Step 1: Master is certified by blood. Step 2: Contract is activated by contact. Step 3: Contract is finalized and is kickstarted via a maiden's love. Now, for the final touches.~"

If Ruby had a face, she would have been making eye contact with you. "What is your name?"

Your mouth begins to move on its own. "Rit-Ritsuka Fujimaru!"

The second those words rolled off your tongue, Mana began to surge around you.

"Heh. Master Registered! Now I'm at your service! Now then, let me show you the power of the Prisma Trance!"

Mana begins to cover your entire body, and you feel your clothes begin to change.

"Compact: Full Open! Expanding connection into Alternate Realities!" The Mana began to fade, and now all of a sudden, your clothes now felt… different.

"Now, Introducing the New Kaleido Ruby…. Prisma Ritsuka!"

Your uniform has now completely changed. Your jacket had now gained pink accents, its sleeves had disappeared, you somehow had a cravat, and a bifurcated light pink cape was now attached to your collar. Your pleated skirt had now gained an extra layer and had become exponentially more frilly. The boots you were wearing became thigh-highs with wing-shaped accessories attached to the ankles and your tights became… significantly shorter and much more pink, which unnerved you quite a bit. And for the cherry on top, a white headband had spontaneously manifested itself onto your head.

"Ruby… What the hell are these clothes?"

"I combined your current Mystic Code with myself! You should have some cool new skills along with stylish magical girl fashion, what do you think?"

"...Why are they so tight?" you say, struggling to breathe. "I'm pretty sure these are 2 sizes too small…"

Ruby's mood took an immediate nosedive. "Oh. Right, I forgot you already hit puberty. Don't worry, I'll fix it." She then perked right back up, as if her mood drop had never happened. "After I get these JUICY reactions!"

"Ruby you bitch!"

*THUNK!*

Mash fell to the ground, passed out and her face scarlet.

"MASH! Don't go into the light!"

Ruby contemplated for a second. "Huh, I never thought that tight clothes could restrict oxygen flow to that extent…" She then used your arm to wave herself around, and you could now mercifully breathe.

Your clothes hadn't really changed much, with only things being that your clothes were the right size and your tights were a bit more modest.

You rush over to Mash, who seemed intact but you had to check over just in case.

"Awawawawawawawawawawawawa…"

Yup, she's fine. Just a little frazzled for some reason. You bring her up into a sitting position against a wall.

"See, she's okay," said Ruby.

You turn towards her in indignation. "Why the hell couldn't you just do the contract in a normal way?!"

"Hey, if you were trapped in a box for an immeasurable amount of years, wouldn't you want to spice things up a bit?"

That caused you to become quiet. "...Well. That still doesn't excuse what you did."

"Roger Master! So, what do you think?"

You stand back up and look over your outfit.

"It's not bad, but it's a little tacky in my opinion."

"No, not the outfit itself. Your new skillset."

Huh? Your skills changed?

You activate your H.U.D. and what you see makes your eyes become as wide as dinner platters.

"What the-?! Woah! I got a major power boost!"

"Ufufufu! How ya like that? This is but the cusp of my power! Through training, you can unlock many more-GAH!" While Ruby was busy gloating, Fou appeared from out of nowhere and bit onto her.

"Help me, Master!"

You debate the merits of helping Ruby. On one hand, she initiated the contract with you in a manipulative and embarrassing manner. On the other hand, she gave you this sweet form…

"...Fou, please stop biting Ruby."

Fou ignored you.

"Well I tried Ruby. Sorry I can't help you."

"Abandoned in an instant! How could you Master?!"

While those two were spending some quality time, you wondered how exactly did Fou get here…

"He came out of Mash's shield, Master."

Huh, it's almost as if Emiya had read your mind. When you look at his face, he looked… dead inside.

"Emiya, are you alright?" you ask the shell-shocked Archer.

"Oh it's nothing Master, I'm just regretting turning around and experiencing the 3rd most terrifying and confusing feeling in my entire life." he responds, a little too blasély for a normal person.

"Errm okay… You seem a little too calm, are you sure you're freaking out?"

"Being calm and frank in tense situations is a coping mechanism of mine. Currently, I am suppressing the urge to scream into the sky and commit seppuku at the same time."

That was certainly an image…

"So… What was the confusing and terrifying feeling you experienced?"

"It really doesn't matter right now." he finishes succinctly. "The past doesn't matter."

"Hmph. Well now you made me overly curious for nothing…"

"Not the face! NOT THE FACE!"

— — — — —

After Mash was reawakened, she proceeded to separate Fou from Ruby by bribing him with a piece of bread. After that, you all went back up the stairs.

Unfortunately for you, Mash was refusing to look at you. At first, you thought you had done something to piss her off, but you knew for a fact you had nothing wrong. Plus, you would occasionally catch glimpses of her staring at you, mouth slightly ajar, like she wanted to say something but was unable to get the words out. Was your outfit making her uncomfortable?

You bring Ruby closer to you and whisper to her. "Hey, Ruby. Is it possible for you to make my outfit more conservative?"

The wand flippantly turns you down. "Psh, this is conservative! You should see what my sister Sapphire makes… her…" He sentence dies, but she then continues on as if it never happened. "A-anyways, this is basically conservative for a magical girl anyways. No need to change it."

You were a bit concerned with Ruby's spontaneous mood-swing, but you decided to shrug it off for now. "Well you sure have a loose definition of the word conservative…"

"Hello there Kyrielight, Archer, Fuji…maru…"

The Director had come back from her bathroom break. She looked marginally better now, but since the Director looked like she was desperately trying not to burst into laughter, you felt like you wanted to slug her again.

"N-nice dress Fujimaru…*snrk*..." she tittered out, hand over her mouth.

Gareth peeked in out of curiosity. "Woah! You're right Miss Director." She gives you a thumbs up. "It looks good on ya luv! I especially dig the cape." Man, she was just too sweet sometimes…

Out of the corner of your eye, you see Mash visibly droop downwards. Huh, you wonder what that's about.

You walk over to her. "Are you good, Mash? Still feeling light headed from your spill earlier?" Now that you think of it, why did Mash collapse earlier?

Mash shakes her head and mutters something underneath her breath. You can't catch it. "'Scuse me Mash, but, you're going to have to speak up a little."

"...You look good, Senpai…"

Thank you, Ruby. Thank you for everything.

"Huh. I think I can see the appeal of the genre now. Cute moments with both the heroine and the rival all in one sitting!"

Scratch that, you still wanted to throttle Ruby.

However, after Ruby spoke, the Director and Gareth began to freak out. Mostly the Director though.

"Did that wand just talk?!"

"Master. Let go of the wand, it might be dangerous." she says, entering a combat stance.

"Hey. Calm down you two. This is Ruby, the reason I'm in this get-up. Somehow, I've entered a contract with her." you raise her up to greet the others.

"Nice to meet you all! Hope we can all have fun together!" she says waving her… head?

"How is it alive?" questioned the Director getting up close to scrutinize Ruby.

"Hey! Don't you know it's rude to question a magical artifact's sentience?" responded the stick with a huff.

Gareth stood down, but was still looking at Ruby warily. "Well, if you say so Master…"

"Alright as much as I'd like to hear everyone's critique on my outfit, how exactly do I turn back, Ruby? If I'm running for my life, I don't want to be tripping over my cape." you ask her.

"Well, you aren't exactly going to be running whenever you're in this get up, but okay. I honestly don't see why you like that soulless uniform though."

"Soulless?! How dare you insult Chaldea's uniform!" said the Director in annoyance.

Ruby completely ignored her.

"Oh, it's not like I prefer my uniform. I just don't feel like wearing it right now, I'll put it back on once we enter combat."

"Fiiiiine."

Ruby then detached from your hand, her handle disappeared, and mana surrounded you once more. When it dissipated, your uniform was now back to normal.

The Director gave you a confused look. "Why would you go into battle in THAT outfit? Is it some sort of powerful mystic code that only happens to look ridiculous, while having great power within?"

You remember the ludicrous things you saw when you appraised the outfit.

"Pretty much."

Ruby began to laugh. "Awww! I guess you aren't so bad for someone uninformed in the ways of the Mahou Shoujo. So despite that, you're probably my favorite Master so far!"

"Thanks I guess… Anyways, I'll go check up on Mordred and Caster before we leave. You guys just rest up for a little while longer."

Mash calls out to you. "Senpai, you haven't rested at all though. Shouldn't you stay here?"

"I'll be fine Mash. Just get some shut-eye while you still can."

As you walk outside, you think your eyes might be playing tricks on you, but you swear you can see Mash reaching out…

— — — — —

"Ruby. Why are you following me?"

"You're my Master! Of course, I'll follow you. Plus, I've been starved of any meaningful connection for SO long. Honestly, silence can get very unbearable sometimes and now that I have someone to talk to-"

As Ruby babbled on, you couldn't help but wonder why she was trapped in that chest in the first place. She also said something about a sister of hers, and got upset when she said her name. You should probably discuss that with her at a later date.

"-and that's how I created my imaginary friend Citrine!"

...

…You feel like you missed quite a bit of context.

As you step outside, you can't see Caster or Mordred anywhere. Now where could they-

"Oi. I'm right here."

Rapidly turning to your left, you see Caster leaning against the wall. "Nothing's shown up on the Bounded Field yet and Mordred sees nothing if you're wondering." He then points at Ruby. "So who's your new friend?"

"I'm Magical Ruby! Master's new partner, nice to meet you sir!" She responds enthusiastically.

"Wow, this one seems both polite and rude at the same time, talk about a paradox."

"By the way Caster," you ask him. "You said that Mordred was acting as a look out right? Where is she?"

Caster just simply points upwards. Ah, so she was on the roof.

You thank him and walk a short distance away from the house. Satisfied with the distance, you cock your head upwards towards the roof. What you see… surprises you.

Mordred has her helmet off and is staring off into the distance. She… looks great. From her general demeanor and voice, you expected a rugged woman covered in scars. Instead, she just looks like a normal teenage girl, her bright green eyes complimented by messy blond hair. She and Gareth look remarkably alike, guess they really were sisters.

Mordred's eyes inexplicably meet yours.

An awkward silence holds for a solid 30 seconds…

In an instant Mordred's helmet is back on and she disappears from the roof in a cloud of dust and reappears right in front of you, grabbing your collar.

"...Why the fuck were you looking at me like that, MASTER." Holy shit, she looked PISSED.

"H-hey! I was just surprised you had your helmet off Mordred."

She pulls you downwards and closer to her face. "Bullshit. You were thinking of something else. Tell me what that was and I'll let you off lightly with a broken jaw."

"You're surprisingly good looking and you look a lot like Gareth!" you explain frantically.

"...That's it?"

Mordred seemed confused. "Y-yeah… Honest."

Mordred was silent once more, before she lightly pushed you. It looked like she had just tapped you on the shoulder, but you still went a full foot backwards.

"There. Now we're even. Now don't stare, it's annoying." she then stalked away, going into the mansion.

After Mordred was out of an earshot Ruby piped up again. "Wow. Two tsunderes in a party. Never thought I'd see the day."

"Please don't start Ruby… Wait, what do you mean by two?"

Ruby began to whistle suspiciously. She better watch herself…

Heading back to Caster, you see him chuckling. "That knight sure is a hellion, eh? I'm fairly sure that you didn't just come here to gawk at your Servant though. So what did you come to talk about?"

"Well, I want to know the current situation of the Grail War and the city itself. Got to be informed right?"

"True, true. Well then, what do you want to know first?"

You think to yourself for a second. "Hmm… Tell me more about Saber, the Servant we need to beat and what she's guarding."

"Oh man, where to start…" he says, chuckling once more. "To put it straight, she's a monster. Immune to most Magecraft, massive Magical Circuit output, raw skill with the sword, insane durability, she basically had the skills to kill every single one of us 100 times over."

"You said HAD, did something happen to weaken her?"

"Perceptive I see. Yeah, she HAD the skills to kill us 100 times over. Now, she has all the skills to kill us 5 times over. A massive improvement if I say so myself."

"I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not…."

Caster raises an eyebrow. "I'm being completely serious. Taking on all the other Servants has taken a massive toll on her. Her recent battle with Berserker was the biggest factor in that. The massive lout really gave her a good beating and she seems to barely be able to control him. Plus, the mud from the grail has weakened the power of her sword, so all-in-all attacking her while she's still recovering will be our best chance."

"It probably is. Plus, defeating her will probably fix this Singularity," something pops into your head. "Wait, Caster, you seem to know a lot about Saber. Did you happen to find out her True Name? I heard that figuring out a Servant's true name can help with finding a way to defeat them."

"Was waiting for you to say that. Well worry not, I figured out her name before this war went to shit," Caster pauses for dramatic effect. "Saber's the wielder of the Legendary Sword, Excalibur. The King of Knights, Arthur Pendragon."

"So King Arthur really is a girl…"

"Huh, how'd you already know? Isn't her identity supposed to be her closest guarded secret?"

"I mean I think I saw her in a simulation once, but I'm not really sure if it was the real deal."

He contemplates for a moment. "Okay then, let's try to confirm. What did she look like?"

"Well, she was blond with green eyes, wore plate armor over a blue dress, just as strong as you said she was, oozed charisma, a bit short and looked like she was about 15 to 16 years old. Is that correct?"

Caster grinned. "That's right on the money actually. Well, before she got corrupted that is. Anyways, if we must attack her, it should come in the next 12 hours. Her base of operation is at a cave 20 kilometers northeast of here. Within that cave is the Holy Grail, the entire reason for this war. However, we need to get past both Berserker and Archer to get to her."

You remembered one of Caster's throw-away remarks from earlier. "The enemy Archer is the same person as Emiya right? You said something about that right? Plus, he also seems to have the same sword-based skillset."

"Yup. That bastard has given me headache after headache, even before he became Saber's personal hunting dog. He's most likely guarding the entrance to the cave, so in order to get to Saber, we need to go through him."

"As for Berserker, he should be easy enough to avoid, thank the gods. If was able to rampage freely, he could easily kill everyone in an instant. He stays near the former Einzbern Mansion, Even when he decides to give chase, the second he gets 10 Kilometers from the mansion, he turns back. All we have to do is just avoid him and we should be fine."

Einzbern? That name felt familiar, you remember hearing that name in the last lecture you received at your training before you departed. To quote your lecturer, the family helped create the Fuyuki Grail War System and were known for the manufacturing of one thing, Homunculi. And as you recall, Homunculi have no souls within them…

"...Caster. I have to ask you something. Is it possible for a human soul to be transplanted into a homunculus?"

Caster looked slightly confused. "Yes, if the right magecraft is used."

"Can you do it?"

"Yeah, provided I have enough time… Why do you ask? I think I know what you're trying to say and I don't like it."

You give Caster a confident smile. "Let's head inside Caster. How about we discuss our next plan of action, raiding the-

*CRASH*

Mordred had fallen through the roof…

"Huh. Maybe I shouldn't have knocked out those screws."

Goddamnit Ruby…

— — — — —

Mordred was a bit frazzled. Normally a person staring at her slack-jawed was a sure-fire sign that they were scrutinizing her, looking down on her. But, it seemed that her Master was… admiring her.

Now there was nothing wrong with that, but it came out of nowhere. Plus she just had to compare her to Gareth… they didn't even look that much alike.

She found herself inside the mansion and saw her fellow knight and half-sister talking enthusiastically with the Shielder. Honestly, that purple haired girl looked so much like that self-righteous prick, even acting like him before the stick went all the way up his arse. Yet despite being fused with that asshole, she still didn't even know how to use his Noble Phantasm. Well, she planned to change that soon, but it would have to wait for now.

Well shit. She and Gareth really did look similar… It was definitely the hair and eyes…

...

Whatever, it didn't matter.

Mordred goes out a window, returning to the roof. She heard her Master talking to that Caster dude directly below her, along with another voice, Master had called her Ruby right?

She didn't really pay much attention. Just munching on her last ember and resuming her look-out job.

"...The King of Knights, Arthur Pendragon."

That got her attention. What in the world were they doing talking about Father?

"So, King Arthur really is a girl…"

...

…Why the hell did she think that this kid had any potential? How dare she. How dare she demean her father like that! Did that bitch really think that she knew the King of Knights?! If she wasn't her Master, she would have killed her right then and now.

The blue-haired Caster replied, asking for confirmation. Feh. No way in hell she'll even get one description close to Father's actual appearance!

Crap, she actually managed to do a fairly decent description. That meant that Master had managed to see a really good impostor, a recreation of Father, or the real-deal, unlikely as it was. Oh, and she owed Master an apology she guessed… Wait, no she didn't. She didn't even say any of the stuff she was thinking to her yet.

Caster went off on a tangent on Saber's lackeys. What did they have to do with Father? Apparently though, that scrote that attacked everyone on the bridge was an alternate version of that irritating, oxymoronic Archer. In order to get to Saber, they needed to kill him, he was in a cave, blah blah blah… Well, she would enjoy annihilating that piece of shite later.

That Berserker guy though piqued her interest ever so slightly. From the looks of it, Berserker seemed to be a strong fighter, and there was nothing she loved more than crushing a worthy opponent. But disappointingly, Caster seemed to be persuading Master to stay away. Well, she was a newbie after all, and newbies often…

No way. It seemed that her Master was pretty ballsy after all. Sure for some reason she was after homunculi, but she still wanted to go right up to Berserker's base.

Well then, she should probably go back inside. Those two, or three, will probably head back inside soon-

*CRASH*

"Huh. Maybe I shouldn't have knocked out those screws."

Master was looked at that Ruby thing with disappointment so palpable, she could almost touch it.

"So how much did you hear, ya wayward Saber?" said Caster.

"Enough. So when do we leave for that homunculus mansion?"

"After I inform the others." replied her Master. "And Ruby, don't mess with stuff when you're bored, okay?"

"Gotcha Master!"

She gestured to Mordred and Caster. "Let's go guys. We're going to discuss what to do next."

— — — — —

After heading back inside, you found the others all discussing amongst themselves. In particular, the Director was talking to Dr. Roman and Ms. Da Vinci on your communicator.

You can't exactly make out what they're saying to each other, and before you're able to get close enough to hear anything, the Director hangs up.

You take a seat on the couch. "Alright everyone. We're going to have to move soon. Did Dr. Roman or Ms. Da Vinci say anything of interest?"

"..."

She looks lost in thought, so you snap your fingers to gain her attention. "Hey, you in the right headspace, Director?"

"I am. I'm sorry I didn't answer. Da Vinci had called me, or rather you. She said that if I wanted to get back to Chaldea, I would need to contain my soul in a container. Luckily, Romani had found some intact homunculi in the remains of the Einzbern Mansion using SHEBA."

Huh, looks like Chaldea had the same plan you had. Before you could interject though, the Director continued on.

"However, there is a Servant there, Berserker class. And it's not just any Berserker, the Servant in question is Greece's greatest Hero, Heracles."

…Well shit. Things were certainly much worse than you thought…

Mordred wolfwhistled. "Now this is getting interesting!"

Mash's eyes bugged out of her skull. "Heracles?! THE Heracles?!"

The Director nodded. "While his Spirit Origin has been severely weakened and his observed parameters are much lower than usual, he is still a force to be reckoned with. As such I have elected to avoid it altogether."

"Director. Unless we go there, you are going to DIE when all is said and done. If we don't get you a vessel, you can't go back."

"I know Fujimaru. The mission takes priority. You are Chaldea's only remaining Master, we can't risk you. I know that you made a proposition to me, but you will have to rescind it. There are more lives at stake here than just mine, Fujimaru."

You find yourself at a loss for words. She… was willing to throw away her life to complete the mission?

Mash looked downcast. "Director…"

She gave Mash a semi-confident smile. "Hey, I'm not gone yet, save the goodbyes for later."

You can't let her do this. You can't let her. You WON'T let her.

"...We're not going to do that, Director."

Her eyes harden. "Don't make me order you Fujimaru. You've gone beyond what you were required to do, I won't let you kill yourself in a suicide mission."

The two of you stared each other down, both unwilling to give an inch.

Mordred butted in. "Suicide mission my ass. If the worst comes to worst, I'll use my Noble Phantasm to annihilate the fucker."

"Mo, read the room…" said an exasperated Gareth.

"What? I'm just saying."

"Ufufufu…"

Ruby, who was silent along with Emiya, made her presence known. "You think that I'll just let Master get killed by an overgrown pile of muscles? It'll take more than some hard swings to get past my barrier."

"Barrier?"

"Yeppers! A Rank and guaranteed to stop almost all magical attacks!"

The Director looked skeptical. "Do you really expect me to believe that?"

"Hey, you don't exactly know what I can do! Only Master and Mr. Topless can see the extent of my abilities."

Caster nodded in agreement. "That thing right there is monstrous, dripping in magical energy. If she wanted to, she could force her Master to kill everyone in this room."

"Which I won't do, thank you very much!"

"I'm also pretty sure that the only thing that can break through it outright would be beams of pure concentrated prana."

The Director still looked unconvinced. She lets out a drawn out sigh.

"2 minutes. Convince me in 2 minutes or less."

Hmph. Alright then, let's convince her.

"Director, you're the head of Chaldea. If we lose you, the organization will be sent into chaos. We need you."

The Director's expression does not change. "No, you don't. Da Vinci can do all I do better and more. I got this job through sheer nepotism. Hell, even Romani is more qualified than me with his degree he got in quantum physics 'for fun', " She spat that last part out bitterly.

"Still, you're our leader. Your leadership skills will be needed once we get back."

The Director scoffs. "What leadership? You've done things that were more leaderlike than I have."

Crap, she's getting pessimistic. "The Doc said so himself, you've never done any field-work. Maybe you would have been more calm and collected if you were back at Chaldea."

"Maybe. But that's not what happened. Romani did the exact same things that I would do in that situation. I'm not unique. Don't delude yourself into thinking that I'm not."

Your eyebrow twitches. Why the hell is she wallowing in self-pity now?! What happened to the strong willed Director earlier?

"Director, this might be the only chance we have to save you. I'll need you to cooperate."

She was unyielding. "Which is why I need you to convince me Fujimaru."

You don't know what came over you next to blow up at her again. "You are the DIRECTOR! You know the ins and outs of Chaldea and you know things that no one else knows. Chaldea is your organization, isn't that enough reason to save you?!"

…Her eyes harden. "Wrong again. It was never mine and I know nothing. Your time is over. Don't question me again."

She gets up to leave, and your chance to save her slips away…

No. You won't let her fade away. This woman might have made you want to rip your hair out in frustration and panicked at the slightest sign of danger, but you had the chance to save her.

You remember just how inconsolable she looked when she found out that Dr. Lev was dead…

You'll never forgive yourself if you let the Director give up here.

You grab her sleeve. "Fujimaru, let go of me. I told you-"

"Please."

You let go and bow as deep as you possibly can, even deeper than the bow you gave her earlier.

"...Please let us save you, Director."

"Why are you so adamant about this? Do you have some sort of ulterior motive to go to that castle?"

…That hurt you. A lot. You thought that she trusted you, even if it was only a little. Whatever. You'd still save her, nothing would change that. You'll show her that you are someone she can count on.

You continue, still in your deep bow. "I have no reason. All I heard was a way to save a person, so I took it. If I had a motive, I'd be found out right away. I can't lie to save my life. I know facing Greece's Greatest Demigod is stupid and frankly suicidal, if we can do this you can go back. Chaldea needs all the help it can get at the moment and you are our greatest asset with all your connections to the Mage's Association."

"Please Director. Just give me one chance."

The atmosphere is so thick with tension, you could cut it. After what felt like a lifetime, the Director finally answered.

"...Berserker is to not be engaged. The second Berserker gets near your position, I want you to get out. No questions asked. I'll accompany you. Now excuse me, I have to relieve myself once more." You look up to see the Director going back upstairs.

"Whew! For a second, I thought we would have to knock her out!"

"Ruby, I'm not in the mood right now."

"Well, excuuuse me for trying to cheer you up…"

— — — — —

Damn it. Goddamnit!

Olga slid to the floor. Why couldn't she have just kept her cool! Maybe then Fujimaru would have understood that she was trying to keep her alive!

She didn't think that the girl who had looked so unflappable could look vulnerable, she looked so hurt by her words...

She was used to seeing people look crushed from a bruised ego, but Fujimaru looked like Olga had personally put down her and her entire family.

Then surprisingly, Fujimaru immediately did a 180 and pleaded to her in that same tone she used earlier when the girl tried to give her a pep talk. Next thing she knew, she had already relented to Fujimaru's request.

"I'm useless… I can't even convince one girl to not bother with someone like me…"

Well, there's no helping it now. An Animusphere makes do, no matter the situation. She'll make sure the kid gets through this.

Despite technically being dead, she still felt the presence of her Magical Circuits. She aimed her finger towards a window and casted a single mid-level curse.

The curse obliterated the window, and Olga felt no worse for wear as she watched it dissipate into the night. She was glad to know that she could at least do THAT.

Olga sighed. "I haven't had the time to do anything like that in a while. God Fujimaru, you're going to give me a permanent migraine…"

— — — — —

You collapse in a heap onto the couch. Doing that really took a lot out of you emotionally…

"The Director was right, you know," said Emiya. "It would have been more efficient if we had just ignored Heracles entirely."

"Hey! You don't have to be so callous Emiya!" interjected Gareth.

"No. He's right."

Mash and Gareth look at you in disbelief. "Senpai, you did the right thing. I'm sure the Director would have done the same thing for you."

You don't know the validity to that statement, but you would like to believe it.

You sit up straight. "Alright then. I've committed to this and I'll make sure that this ends with the Director in a new body."

You look at your Servants. "I've got the gist of a plan, but I need to know what you all can do. Knowing is half the battle after all."

Predictably, Mordred talked first. "I can fight anything you want me to, even that Heracles git. I've got my Mana Burst, which should cut him down to size. However, if you really wanna bring out the big guns, let me use my Noble Phantasm, it'll obliterate anything in its path. In summary, just place me in the front, it's all you need to do to get the most out of me."

Next was Gareth. "Well, I might not have Mordred's raw power, I can safely say that I'm pretty strong. I've got this skill that makes me hit harder after I've been hit in turn and I've got a C rank in Battle Continuation. I'm also naturally fast, with A Ranked Agility. So, I'd say that I'd be best used as a skirmisher to support Mo and Ms. Shielder or as an errand girl to retrieve key items."

Emiya uttered a short phrase. "Trace on."

After he said those words, the two shortswords you had seen him using earlier manifested in his hands. "I have a certain type of Projection Magecraft. It allows me to create imitations of Noble Phantasms, which while weaker than the originals, function very similarly to them," He willed the swords to disappear. "As for my parameters, I am below average in terms of physical prowess. But I will do anything that you order me to do, Master. I will only voice complaints if I can't possibly do it."

At the mention of copying of Noble Phantasms, Mordred noticeably brought her sword closer to her, which did not go unnoticed by Caster.

"Sorry Saber, he probably already has your sword. The Archer that we'll have to fight later used it to defeat Lancer and Rider."

Mordred slowly turned her head towards Emiya. "...Don't use my sword as an arrow or I'll kill you."

"Duly noted."

Caster then began his turn. "Well, I've got access to the 18 Norse Runes. And before you ask why an Irish Servant would have access to Norse Runes, my teacher elected to teach them to me. Something about them fitting more for fighting on the frontlines. I can use them for a variety of things, so make sure to make good use of me, Temporary Master."

Finally, it was Mash's turn. "Well, I can make everyone a bit more durable and if I focus hard enough, with your prompting Senpai, I can use my mana to create a temporary shield for myself. Other than that I'm just a barrier for everyone."

That wasn't true…

Mordred puts her head in her hands. "Shite…" The knight glared at your kohai. "You and I are going to have a talk outside." she said, shoving her finger into Mash's chest.

"I-I don't want to fight, Mordred!"

"And there-in lies your problem."

"That's enough now Mordred," you say. "Ruby, you're the last one. What can you do?"

"Weeelll, I can do a lot of things! I can make your ideas come true if you're determined enough, I can provide you with infinite mana, upgrade your skills, and OH! I can also see the future!"

"You better not be pulling my leg here Ruby, or by the gods I'm going to-"

"Relax Master, I haven't lied yet. Now just let me scan you real quick…"

Ruby goes in front of you and seems to appraise you.

"Well that seems promising! Looks like once we get to that Castle, we have 35 minutes to search before we need to leave."

"Are you sure that you're not just pulling things out of your ass?" you say with a heavy dose of skepticism.

Ruby sighs and talks to you in an uncharacteristically tired voice. "I told you Master I would never lie to you. Mess with you, yes. But lie to you and potentially put your life in danger, no. Plus if you die, I'm stuck without a Master once more, and I'm not that stupid."

Ruby seemed sincere enough, so you elect to believe her. For now at least.

"Well then, with that out of the way, here's the plan…"

— — — — —

After the Director returned, she gave you back your communicator.

"Contact Chaldea, Fujimaru. They need to be informed so they can observe us."

Complying with her order, you contact Dr. Roman.

"Ah, Ritsuka! Good to see that you're- What the hell is that thing?"

"Hello, suspicious looking ginger! I'm Ruby!"

"What… are you?"

Ruby wiggled enthusiastically. "I'll tell you if I feel like it later."

"This is Ruby," You say. "I found her in this mansion's basement. Despite her ridiculous appearance, she's quite powerful."

"Hey! I'm not ridiculous, you are, ya Magical Girl hating wet blanket!"

"Okay, ignoring the sentient and powerful magical artifact, the Director seemed adamant in not going to Einzbern Castle and frankly I agree with her," He sighs, scratching his head absentmindedly. "But guessing from your expression, you've managed to convince her and you're already preparing to go…"

The Doctor looks you dead in the eyes. "Stay sharp, Ritsuka. While he's weaker, you're still facing Heracles. Chaldea will be your eye in the sky, we'll inform you of anything should something come up. Take care."

With that, he hung up.

You addressed everyone. "Time to go."

As you all walked outside towards the gate, Caster began to frown. "Hmm. I'm detecting a fairly large group of skeletons, heading towards the mansion at a rapid pace. I count… 30."

"Hah, finally some small-fry…" exclaimed Mordred. She grabs Mash and drags her along. "C'mon Shieldy. You're always complaining about how weak you are, so let's have you get some REAL experience. No one else comes in, the two of us will be more than enough."

"Okay…"

You give Mash a quick thumbs up, wishing her luck, causing her to give the smile you've already gotten so fond of.

"Are you fine with Saber doing this, Fujimaru?" asked the Director.

"Yep. I trust Mordred's expertise. But if things do go a bit south, I'll heal either of them," You do hope that your judgment is correct…

— — — — —

Mash was… a bit overwhelmed.

"See those 5 boney blokes over there? Try to kill them all in a single sweep."

Mordred had already decimated half of the enemy group, and was now busy directing her in combating the rest of the skeletons.

Mash tried to comply with the knight's directions, but only managed to get 2 of the highlighted 5.

"Failed. Do it again, correctly this time. Only 13 left now."

Her shoulder was aching. She was barely able to keep up with Mordred during her rampage, and Mash had tired herself out.

"Hyahh!" This time, Mash changed up her technique, making her swing less wide while keeping the same arc. Through this, she managed to hit five at the same time. Mash felt very satisfied with that outcome and looked to see what Mordred thought of it.

Mordred looked positively pensive, though that was offset by her violently crushing the skull of a skeleton under her boot. "Hmm… Do it again. I need to see it once more."

Mash nods. "I see!" She complied with her demands, swinging exactly how she swung before and once again hitting five skeletons all at once.

"How was that Mordred?" asked the purple-haired girl, eagerly awaiting the knight's response.

"..." Mordred was silent, absent-mindedly skewering the last two skeletons on her sword. She pulled Clarent out of the last skeleton and pointed it at Mash.

"Why are you holding back?"

Eh?

"I'm sorry, but I don't understand."

"You're holding back, it's like you don't want to kill these things," She tilts her head at Mash. "Why is that? These things don't feel the slightest bit of remorse or pain."

"I… don't know, Sir Mordred…" Why did she hold back? She knew she was scared of battle, but she didn't know that she was unconsciously holding back…

"Well then, if you don't know, then I'll have to show you."

Senpai and the others began to approach their position.

"Nice job Mordred and Mash. Good job clearing the-"

Out of nowhere, Mordred grabbed Senpai and… held her sword to her neck?!

— — — — —

Mordred had caught you completely by surprise. You didn't expect her to do something like this, did you really misjudge her this badly?

"Mo! What the hell are you doing?!" called out Gareth. She had a look of shock plastered onto her face.

She tried to go to her, but was stopped by… Emiya and Caster?

"Damn it! Not you two too!" exclaimed the Director. "Going to have to do this myself huh?"

The Director aimed and fired a curse at Mordred's hand. Sadly, it did absolutely nothing.

"Magic Resistance is a fickle thing, Miss Director," Mordred stated matter-of-factly, seemingly blàse about this situation.

"Ruby, do something!" you say in desperation.

"Nope."

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN, NOPE?!?!"

"'Cause I saw this happening when I scanned you with my Secret Device™. This literally doesn't affect the mission, so this is either a comical misunderstanding or…"

"A test."

Caster interjected with a response of his own. "Didn't take you for the charitable type Saber, what prompted you to do it?"

"I ain't doing this out of any sort of kindness," she said, removing her sword and shoving you towards Mash. "It was pure logic. Shielder is the weakest fighter out of the five of us and I wanted to see if she had the resolve to not hold herself back, since it's that shit that's preventing her from using her Noble Phantasm."

She glared at her. "Judging by her lack of response and merely standing there like a bloody idiot, the answer is no."

Mash wilted at Mordred's withering judgment. You felt the urge to defend her.

"That's enough Mordred. You've made your point, now please back off."

"...Senpai. Mordred was right. I did nothing while she had you at her mercy, I'm useless."

You are momentarily lost for words. Mash just looked so… despondent.

"Ah shite, I think I might have overdone it…"

"Oh, what made you think that?" deadpanned Gareth.

"Well whatever," said Mordred. "If you're all mopey, that's even worse so I'll make it up to you."

In an instant, the knight dashes towards Mash, swinging her sword.

Directly at you.

Mash is barely able to deflect her blow. "Wh-what are you doing?!"

Getting behind Mash, you are once again shocked so badly that you're tongue-tied.

"Ooh! So that's the angle she's going for. Careful Master, she's swinging for your neck."

"This isn't the time to joke around Ruby!"

Mordred rests her sword on her shoulder. "I'm doing nothing. Just trying to kill Master with everything I've got. That way, you can just beat the shit out of me to your heart's content. Of course you wouldn't be able to do that if I went all out, so I'll go a bit easier on you."

"But don't even think that for a second that just because I'm going easy on you that this'll be a cakewalk. Hell, if I feel like it, I'll even give you a taste of a fraction of my Noble Phantasm's power."

Her sword was then sheathed in red lightning, and with her free hand, she gestured to Mash, taunting her. "Give me everything you've got for real this time. Master's life depends on it. Hell, maybe if you fight hard enough, you won't be so weak anymore."

You see Gareth, holding her head in her hands sighing in frustration. It looked like this had happened before for Gareth to have that type of reaction.

Mash was trembling, she looked like she was about to puke. That alone filled you with white-hot anger.

"You've overstepped your bounds, Mordred. By the power of my Command Seal-"

"Stop!"

Your Command Seals went inert once more.

Mash looked at you, desperation in her eyes. "Please allow me to be selfish just this once, Senpai. I'll take on Mordred, and this time I'll protect you. Please."

You were taken a bit aback. She was being very irrational, but you could understand her sentiment. However, you couldn't let Mordred run amok, so unfortunately you had to-

Remember that barrier, Master?

Huh? Was that Ruby's voice?

Yep, it's your pal Ruby on our personal telepathic channel! If you have the barrier you don't have to worry about any of Mordred's half-assed attacks, and I'm sure she knows this considering the look she gave me.

Really?

Yes, really. However, your Shielder doesn't know that. So if I'm active, you don't have to worry about getting hit and your Servant can get some much needed development. Whada ya say?

Fine.

That's the spirit!

You grab Ruby's now fully extended handle and after being sheathed in mana once more, you are in Ruby's Magical Girl Outfit.

"You're not actually considering doing this are you Fujimaru?!" exclaimed the Director. "No matter how altruistic Saber's intentions are, they're still trying to kill you! Just use a Command Seal and be done with it!"

"Just trust me Director," you say. "I haven't let you down yet."

Mordred chuckles. "Nice to know that you're taking this seriously, Master."

Mash looks back at you gratefully, and prepares for battle.

"A-awaiting your orders Master!"

Chapter 4: Prologue: Section 4

Notes:

Alrighty, we're nearing the end of Fuyuki now.

This Chapter a bit more comedic than the previous ones, due to the Sections that made it up being a bit of an Interlude before the Salter and EMIYA fights, along with the looting of Einzbern Castle going off without a hitch in the dice rolls. Those will be the subject of next chapter, so y'all can look forward to that next week.

As for a retrospective, I feel like I was starting to hit my groove as a writer in these sections. I personally feel that there was a significant jump in quality by this time, especially in the dialogue. Hopefully y'all feel the same about that too.

Chapter Text

"Activate H.U.D."

Your overlay appears once more, with some new changes. Your green U.I. was now much more saturated and the text was now a completely different font, probably courtesy of Ruby. But you would have to admire those changes later, you had to support Mash.

From what you saw from Mordred earlier, it would be suicide to engage her in a straight up fight. But it would be even worse if Mash stayed put and fought defensively, as judging from Mordred's demeanor, she would not take that sort of strategy lying down. As such, you elected on a compromise.

Mash, activate your 1st Skill! Stay close and only counter when you see an opening, don't initiate any attacks!

Affirmative Senpai!

As Mash activated her skill, Mordred charged.

Instead of slashing with her sword like you expected, Mordred launched herself towards the two of you with a flying kick.

With a deafening clang, Mash was knocked slightly back. The aggressive knight then followed up the strike with a powerful swing of her sword.

Mash was clearly affected by the impact of Mordred's blow, wincing in clear pain from the strike on her shield.

"Hmph. Even though I was going easy on you, I still expected you to fold thanks to your inexperience. Well, I guess I was underestimating you a bit. Won't happen again."

While Mordred was monologuing, Mash used this as an opportunity to preemptively attack her according to your orders. However…

"Woah there mate! It's rude to interrupt ya know. I worked hard on figuring out what sort of intimidating shite to say."

Mordred casually dodged Mash's swing, before delivering a swift kick to her abdomen, sending her flying past you.

"Mash! Are you alright?" you exclaim in concern, running to her side.

"*KOFF!* I'm… fine Senpai… GET BACK!"

She pushes you behind her and intercepts another one of Mordred's strikes.

"Hmm. I'd give that parry a 6 out of 10. Ain't nothing wrong with it, but nothing special either," After that last bit of advice, Mordred relentlessly sent a flurry of blows towards Mash, with her just barely being able to keep up.

"Huh, maybe I should have attacked so much. Well it ain't no skin off my back. Parries ain't the only thing I should be checking!"

Her torrent of strikes became more and more intense, yet Mash stood strong.

"Oi! Ya gonna attack yet? We don't have all-"

*CLANG*

While Mordred was attacking, Mash thrusted the edge of her shield into Mordred's face, caving in her helmet. But since she went to attack instead of defending, Clarent slashed across Mash's shoulder.

"GHRK!" cried out Mash, who quickly disengaged and drew herself closer to you, breathing heavily.

Mordred just stood there, unmoving. Then, she retracted her helmet.

Her nose was pretty much broken, and blood was streaming down her face, marring her normally fair features. But despite that, Mordred had a manic grin on her face.

"Okay, okay. Now that was some good stuff. The determined challenger finally lands their first blow at great cost to themselves. Typical underdog story," she snaps her nose back into place with her free hand, with a sickening crack. "Fine. I'll stop with the teacher bullshit. There was a reason I never got a squire after all."

You didn't realize this before, but Mordred was only swinging her longsword with one hand. Now, you could see clear as day that she was gripping the sword with both hands.

"Let's get serious. For real this time."

With that declaration, she charged at Mash at a much greater speed than before, and in an instant, she was in Mash's blind spot. It was a miracle Mash was able to react…

With every single blow, you could see that Mordred was putting more and more force into her swings. Mash was straining every time both of their weapons clashed.

'Crap this is bad.' you think. 'If this keeps going, she's going to get overwhelmed!'

Mash! Try to create some space!

Y-yes Master!

Mash then, through some insane stroke of fate, managed to hook Clarent onto the edge of her shield and THROW Mordred a fair distance away.

Ya think your Girlfriend knows any Judo?

SHUT UP RUBY!

With that quick moment of reprieve, you access the upgraded First Aid skill on your H.U.D. and use it on Mash.

As you watch Mash's wound heal, out of the corner of your eye you see… Mordred's wounds healing?!

"Looks like yer not good at controlling your skills yet Master. What a shame too, could've saved the scar Shieldy gave me," she said, with her nose returning to its normal position.

It's an AoE skill, so don't worry Master it wasn't your fault. It's just that Mordred counts as a member of your party. Said Ruby, in the back of your head.

Well shit…

Mordred then jumped right back into her assault on Mash, reinvigorated. But it was a two-way street and Mash was right back in it, stonewalling Mordred.

"Gotta say, you've kept up quite well Shieldy," stated Mordred. "Can't say you're at the level of Bors or even Gareth, but you're getting there," She followed up that compliment with a pommel strike directly to Mash's head and another kick to the gut.

"Gah!"

After being knocked away once more, Mash tried to retaliate with a quick sweep, but it was quickly diverted and Mash was slammed head-first into the ground, creating a small crater in it.

"C'mon. Right after I praised ya, you went up and did a rash attack like that," A care-free smile crossed her face. "Ah this is nostalgic, this reminds me of my first spar with that prick Lancelot…" Mash struggled to get up, but was kicked once more, being sent flying back again.

Fortunately for Mash, the healing skill still seemed to be active, mending her wounds. However in your H.U.D. you see that Mash's 1st Skill had expired, and that she would be exposed if Mordred attacked once more. You weren't going to let that happen.

Mash, quick! Activate your 2nd Skill!

Mash didn't respond, only looking at you and nodding her head. As Mordred once again tried to close the distance, Mash's mana surged and she was then surrounded by a pure white sheath of prana.

Mordred attempted to swing through regardless. She was rewarded for her effort by being launched back a significant distance.

"Ohoho! Now that's much better!" exclaimed Mordred after she skidded to a stop. "I'd say you earned this, fair and square! You might be able to eat it, but what about Master?"

At the base of Clarent's blade, structures not unlike vents opened up. You then see… blood dripping out of the knight gauntlets. The second it touched the sword, the lightning that arced around her sword reappeared with a vengeance.

It grew until it was a massive mesmerizing pillar of red, violently writhing electricity. You couldn't take your eyes off of it…

"This is the evil sword that destroyed my father. Stop it if you can, Shielder! CLARENT BLOOD ARTHUR!"

— — — — —

Time slowed to a snail's pace for Mash. Within it, Mash could make out a variety of things in her vision.

She saw Gareth breaking free of Emiya and Caster's hold, trying to get to Senpai, while the two rushed to stop her.

She also saw the Director diving for cover. Mash didn't exactly blame her, even though Mordred's Noble Phantasm was weaker, it could still kill her.

Mordred's Noble Phantasm…

Senpai had given her a chance, and she was squandering it. If she didn't do anything, Senpai would die…

She had to unleash it. She NEEDED to unleash it!

Even if it's fake for now, if she isn't able to, they would both disappear!

It would be her own fault if the girl that cared so much for her died right here… She could never accept that!

So she raised her shield up to the heavens and cried out with all she had.

— — — — —

Seconds before Mordred's Noble Phantasm hit, Mash let out a downright anguished scream.

"AAAHHHH!"

Raising her shield, you watch her slam it into the ground forcefully, and something downright beautiful reveals itself.

A massive shield of rainbow light shoots out from where Mash slammed her weapon, completely enveloping both Mash and yourself in the process.

When Mordred's attack came into contact with the spectral aegis, it didn't just hit it, it was outright absorbed. And with a dull thrum, all of the energy was then expelled.

The reflected wave decimated everything in its path, and once the smoke cleared, the nearly intact mansion, that had probably survived so much up until now, was now almost completely destroyed.

Mash was breathing heavily, clearly fatigued. "I… I did it… Senpai."

"Yep, ya did!" said Mordred, who smacked her good naturedly on the back, nearly bringing the poor girl to her knees.

"Wait Mordred, how the hell did you get here?!"

"Oh, I had a hunch that this would happen, so after I launched my Noble Phantasm a quarter of the way, I drew back my sword and booked it towards the two of you," she replied, waving you off. "But I didn't think that it would completely repel my attack, even in its weakened form. Ya sure are a strong Servant."

Then she rested her hand on Mash's shoulder and looked at her with a cold smile. "Now, never make me do this mentor shite ever again. It burned me the fuck out."

"Y-yes Mordred. A-and I'm sorry for breaking your nose and helmet…"

"Oi, this was a fight. Don't apologize, it's stupid."

"Okay Sir Mordred!" replied Mash, with a quick salute.

"Feck off ya damn Girl Scout..."

Letting go of Ruby and returning back to your normal uniform, you greet her with the brightest smile you can muster. "Great job Mash, that was amazing!"

She gave you a rueful smile. Huh, you thought that she would be happy with unlocking her Noble Phantasm. Why is it that…

Ah. Right, she didn't know.

"Yes, I unlocked my Noble Phantasm, but I also unnecessarily put you in danger," Mash bowed deeply, not looking at you. "I'm sorry, Senpai. I'm a sorry excuse for a Servant. Please punish me for my transgressions as you see fit."

Crap! Now you definitely can't tell her about the barrier!

You look to Mordred to help, surely she'll assist in-

You find yourself looking at the SMUGGEST shit-eating grin upon Mordred's face.

Damn you Mordred, damn you.

Surely Ruby-

"Ufufu! This is going to be great!"

You kick yourself mentally for even considering her.

You braced for impact. "Uh… I'm sorry to break it to you Mash but… I wasn't in any real danger."

She blankly looks up at you.

"Eh?"

— — — — —

"Uuuu… Now I feel stupid…" said your kouhai through a pout, trying to ignore Mordred who was leaning on her knees, doubled down in laughter.

You patted Mash on the back. "It's okay, you're not stupid. Plus, I thought you looked cool back there," This time she smiled with a bit more joy, warming up your soul in the process.

While you were basking in Mash's happiness, you saw Gareth walk over to Mordred.

You never thought you'd see her look… empty. She strode right up to her fellow knight and began slowly pounding her fists onto Mordred's armor.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid…"

"Um… Is she okay, Mordred?" you ask her.

"...Shite. I've REALLY pissed her off this time ."

Gareth looks blankly at her sister. "Language. Stupid, stupid, stupid…"

"Well, she should be fine in a couple minutes," said Mordred. Something catches her eye and her expression sours. She tries to have her helmet return to no avail, with it screeching in exertion. Mash's strike seemed to have done a number on it. She clicked her tongue in annoyance.

"It's gonna take a hot minute for that thing to repair itself… So what the hell are ya lookin' at Archer?" she said to Emiya, daring him to answer.

"...Nothing. You just reminded me of someone I was once close to," he replies looking away.

"EWW! Gross!"

While that conversation was going on, your communicator rang once more.

"Ritsuka, I've detected a massive surge in Mash's Magical Circuit activity. We've also seen a massive shield made out of light on SHEBA, what was that?"

"Ah the Doctor is here!" interjected Mash. "How are things going back at Chaldea?"

"Oh, we've managed to clear the rubble to the storage room. If you want the Golden Apples, you can ask for them. Honestly, I was pretty surprised when we found that all of them were intact. Anyways, back to the issue at hand. Was that the Noble Phantasm of the Servant you bonded with?"

Mash nodded. "Yes, I think so. However, I… still haven't invoked its True Name yet."

Mordred momentarily stopped trying to push Gareth away. "I'm sorry, what? You activated that git's Noble Phantasm and you STILL don't know its name?"

"Stop bullying Mash you stupid, mean idiot…"

"Hey, just get off of me already! I already said I'm sorry!"

"You didn't know its name, but you still activated it on pure instinct?" Wow, your kouhai was awesome…

"That itself is an achievement, Kyrielight," said the Director who had finally made her way over, holding Fou in her arms. "You managed to release a Noble Phantasm with just a wish. You didn't have a desire to discover its True Name, and that is why it responded."

The Director smiled. Holy shit, she's SMILING. It wasn't like the small grins she had given you earlier, she was full-on ear-to-ear smiling. "Heh, what an inspiring tale, it's like something out of a fairy tale…"

Mash blushed. "D-director…"

"Oh, don't mind me, I'm just teasing. I'm just pleased that you are able to use your Noble Phantasm now," She then went back to her usual self. "Still, it's quite inconvenient that you don't know the True Name, I'll think of an Incantation for you."

The Director pondered for a moment. "Hmm… It's a Pseudo-Deployment of a Noble Phantasm and it's unique to you…" She looks back at Mash. "How about Lord Chaldeas? I vaguely remember that the Noble Phantasm of the spirit you're bonded to started with 'Lord', other than that I don't actually know much about the Servant in question."

She pointed at Mash. "Chaldea is a name that has an important meaning for you, so if you combine those two, you get a decently strong incantation."

You glance at your kouhai. "What do you think Mash? Wanna use it?"

Mash smiled again, punctuating it with a small nod. "Y-yes, thank you Director!"

"Lord Chaldeas… I think it suits you perfectly, Mash!"

"Sorry Doc, I kinda forgot you were still here."

"Ehhh?!" Dr. Roman began to sulk. "I got ignored even though I went out my way to check on you all…"

"Hey Master, who's the gross looking carrot-top?" asked Mordred.

"AND WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP INSULTING MY APPEARANCE?!"

"It's okay Doctor," said Mash. "You aren't gross, only a bit weird sometimes."

"...Take over Leonardo. I'm going to go cry in the corner…"

Mash blanched. "Dr. Roman?! Are you alright?!"

"Just give him a second Mash, Fujimaru-chan. Romani will be back in a bit."

— — — — —

Some time later, you and your party were about 2 kilometers away from Heracles's indicated territory.

"A-alright Ritsuka, you're about to enter Heracles' domain. I want you to be on high alert. The Homunculi we detected should be in the basement of the castle. *sniff*"

"Doc, were you actually crying?"

"N-no I wasn't! It was just allergies! No way getting called weird affected me in the slightest!"

You kind of doubt that…

"Well, alright then… Catch ya later Doc," you say, hanging up.

"Aight. Everyone stand in an orderly line," said Caster. "Time for you friendly neighborhood rune caster to work his magic. ...Gods, I didn't even mean to make a pun…"

With that, he pointed his staff at you, muttering Norse phrases that you couldn't quite catch.

When he cast his magecraft onto you, you feel a peculiar sensation, as if cold water was being poured down the back of your shirt.

"You're good to go, Master. Who's next!"

While Caster was busy masking everyone, you pondered how you all got to this point.

You all had to fight several other groups of skeletons, and you found out several things about the Servants under your employ. Namely that Caster fights way too close to the front for a class known for being squishy, Emiya almost never uses his bow against mobs, Mordred gets way too into slaughtering your enemies, and Gareth looked really cool when she was in the zone.

Speaking of Gareth and Mordred…

"Gareth, how many times do I gotta apologize?! It all ended up well in the end, so why are ya still mad?" said the exasperated Mordred.

"Hmph! You're too reckless y'know, you almost gave me a heart attack! At first I thought you were just being your normal hot headed self, but then you ACTUALLY used your Noble Phantasm! If you really wanted to, you could have broken past both Mash's Noble Phantasm and Ruby's barrier and you could have really killed Master!" She ended that reprimand with a pout, turning her head away.

"Geez fine, what do you want me to make it up to you."

"...Make me a muffin."

"*GROOAAN* WHY?! I suck at cooking!"

"You can't be as bad as big bro. His attempt at mashed potatoes still makes the cook in me have nightmares..." she replied with a shudder.

"UGH! Fine!"

Those two really were siblings. It brought up good memories you had with your brother when you were younger. The incident with the disaster-level attempt at cooking udon never failed to get a chuckle out of you…

"Everyone, stop," Emiya held out his hand. He wordlessly projected his bow and created one of those spiral shaped sword-arrows you saw him create on the bridge.

He aimed southwest and it launched off into the night sky. After a few seconds, it exploded quite a fair distance away.

"Hey Archer, what was that about?" asked Caster.

"He's close. We need to hurry, keep it down everyone. The noise should keep him away."

In the distance, you see the treeline rustle ominously, with one particularly big tree even falling over.

Archers sure have amazing eyesight. You're very suddenly glad that you have him on your team…

Ruby, I should change into the Magical Girl Mystic Code. You say to the wand. Emiya's Projection will undoubtedly use up quite a bit of Mana, and if I run out at the wrong time it could end very badly.

Already on it Master, just grab my handle already.

Unlike the previous two instances, the swap to Kaleid/Liner Chaldea was much more muted. Looks like Ruby made it bright and flashy earlier because she wanted to put on a show, glad to know she knew when to tone it down.

"C'mon everyone. We don't have much time to waste."

— — — — —

The rest of the trek was dead silent, with only Emiya's arrows breaking the quiet gloom.

Upon arriving at the entrance of the castle, you took in its massive size. It was easily twice as large as the mansion you looted earlier.

You give out orders for the operation. "Alright, just like I explained earlier. Emiya, stay on the roof and keep drawing Heracles away from here with your Broken Phantasms, keep me updated on the situation. Caster, support Emiya and keep him in tip top condition until I call you for the Soul Transfer. Mordred, Gareth, you two loot as much stuff as you can, here's a bag Dr. Roman sent for that purpose. Director, Mash. You two are with me. Our 35 minutes start now, so let's make the most of them."

Mordred kicked the door down and everyone except Emiya and Caster entered, and you all separated into your own separate groups.

The two sisters immediately began rummaging through the cabinets near the entrance, looking for anything of value. You walked past them and stopped in the massive living room, contacting Chaldea again.

"Doc, we're in. This place is massive, and since we're on a time limit, I'll need you to guide us to where the homunculi are."

"Right, I'll pull up the map right now. First, you need to head to the left…"

— — — — —

Walking through the dark halls, with only the flickering fire from outside to light the way, you feel a bit tense.

Countless "what-ifs" swirled around your head. What if you didn't find the basement in time, what if you had led everyone into a death trap. What if there were no homunculi…

No. No unnecessary thoughts. Just focus on the plan you made, Ritsuka.

Archer, status report.

So far, Berserker hasn't gotten close. You should still try to hurry up Master, Caster hasn't done much and he's just talking my ear off.

Caster, don't distract Emiya please.

Hey, I'm just bored. It's not like doing anything that is seriously bothering him.

That elicited a small chuckle from you. Okay then, make sure to keep me posted.

That exchange soothed your nerves a bit, but you still need to stay vigilant…

"Alright, you're close now." said Dr. Roman. "You should see a door to your right. Open it and go straight down."

Lo and behold, there was a door right where Dr. Roman indicated. You checked the handle and found the door to be locked.

"Mash, knock down the door please."

"Yes Senpai." Mash turned the door into splinters with a single strike, revealing a pitch-black corridor.

"Who-boy!" exclaimed Ruby. "It sure is dark down there! Let me just…" In an instant, Ruby's head lit up in a brilliant flash of light.

"So you're a flashlight too Ruby?" you say. "Is there something you can't do?"

"Deal with that rodent on your shoulder…" grumbled the sentient wand.

"FOU!"

"Fou says that he wants to chew you into dust, Ruby."

"Why thank you Shielder…"

You decide to put a cork on this lovely conversation for the time being. "Alright, enough chit-chat everyone. Are we almost there Doc?"

"Just about, Ritsuka. You should see several pools scattered around the room."

Sure enough, there were many pools in the dank basement. Waving Ruby around, you see some things floating around.

"Mash, Go left. Director, go right. I'll go check the pools ahead. Ruby, up the brightness."

"You got it Master!"

The room was now almost completely illuminated, and you could make out several details of the room. Namely just how BIG the pools were.

Looking at the first pool, you see a large mass floating within. It looked… weird.

It was a pale white mass of flesh, looking more like a golem than a person.

"Umm Doc, didn't you say that there were homunculi in here?" you ask him, pointing your communicator at the thing.

"Oh that actually is an INTACT homunculus, just one that has a bit of defects in it." he replies.

"Well that's a hell of a defect…"

"It looks like mochi, Master. How about you eat some?" interjected Ruby.

"Nah, I'll pass on that."

Going around the edges of the pools, you see more of the same fleshy, defective homunculi floating about, though one of them seemed to be a deep onyx instead of pallid white.

"Are there any homunculi hidden underwater?"

"Just stick me in the pool, I'll check."

Complying with Ruby's suggestion you stick the… well stick into the pool.

Hmm, could that be a- nah, that's just a detached arm. Nothing in this pool!

You pull her out. "Alright then, how about we do that for the two pools."

"That's fine with me! The mana-rich water feels nice.~"

Repeating the process twice, you find… absolutely nothing. Well, this part seemed to be a bust, so you decide to go check on the others.

Going over to the Director's area, you see her inspecting one of the homunculus-golems with an appraising eye, having dragged one out of the pool. Her eyebrows are furrowed in concentration.

"...Fujimaru, do you think that these homunculi have vocal cords?"

"You're not seriously considering going into one of these things are you?"

"If worse comes to worst, I might have to."

"EHHH?!?! Are you serious, Director?!" exclaimed Dr. Roman.

"Probably. Now wipe that stupid look off your face Romani," replied the Director with a grimace.

You imagine the Director flipping out in this body. A shiver travels down your spine.

"Well then! Let's make sure that outcome doesn't pass! Ruby, would you mind?"

"Hey, I already said I was fine with it. No need to ask again."

Checking out the Director's pools, you also find nothing. The possibility of the Director getting into one of the hulking homunculi was getting closer to becoming real, and as powerful you think she would be in that body, you think it would be good for the Director of Chaldea to be able to fit through the doors.

"Senpai! Director! I found something!"

Ah, right in the nick of time.

You half walk, half jog over to your kouhai.

Mash had fished the homunculus out of the pool and you saw a… naked lady.

"GAH! Sending some clothes over right now!" cried Dr. Roman, looking away with a massive blush on his face. "Leonardo!"

Her skin was pale as snow, and her empty eyes a bright crimson. She also had… shapely legs and-

Fou climbs onto your head and looks down onto your face, blocking your vision and snapping you out of your stupor. You mentally thank Fou for preserving your common sense as he jumped over to Mash, taking that as your cue to look away.

"Senpai, you look flushed again. It is pretty hot here though, do you need to step outside for a bit?"

"No, I'm fine Mash," you reply, with a nervous laugh.

"Ufufu…"

Not a word Ruby.

Yes Master.~

"Huh, a Justeaze Model." stated the Director. "I'd never have thought that I'd see one of these…"

"Are they any good?" you ask, not daring to look.

"Very, they are essentially a Magical Circuit in human form, which makes them able to do things humans and even normal homunculi can only dream of."

"She kind of looks like you too, Director," said Mash.

You decide to sneak a quick peek, just to confirm.

"Y'know, she actually does…"

Crap, this is gonna make things awkward later. You try to wipe the memory of the homunculus's body from your mind.

"That is merely a coincidence. It's nothing to fuss over," states the Director matter-of-factly.

"A-alright, I've sent the clothes," said Dr. Roman. "Now get the homunculus dressed and find somewhere safe to initiate the transfer."

"Roger dodger, Doc!"

"Hey Gareth! What are these things?"

Gareth turned her head towards her sister. She seemed to be holding a glowing rainbow crystal of some sort.

"I dunno Mo. Seems like a catalyst. You should still toss in the bag, maybe it could be important."

With a shrug, Mordred throws them in. The two of them had managed to find a decent amount of supplies. It wasn't enough to fill the bag even half-way, but Gareth liked to think that was because Chaldea sent a bag that was too big.

"Man is there really nothing here?" said Mordred. "I even checked for hidden spots in the wall…"

"Mo, you just randomly kicked holes in the wall and shouted 'ah-ha!'."

"Hey, it usually works."

Gareth chuckled. Mordred had changed quite a bit since the last time she saw her. When she met her before that fateful day when she left Camelot, Mordred had seemed so sad, so angry…

"I'd never thought someone as prideful as you would go out of their way to help someone."

"Oi, I already said that it was a calculated and rational decision, I wasn't being overly nice."

"Says the knight errant that always made decisions without a care for logic.~"

"SHADDUP!"

It had been a while since Gareth had laughed this hard.

And a while since she talked to her sister.

"By the way, you found out I was your sister from your memories of a past Grail War right?" asked Mordred. "I definitely remember Mother not telling you about it…"

"Yes, it was a Grail War in Paris, a tragic and sad tale best saved for another day. Anyways, We've dawdled long enough." finished Gareth, placing some engraved disks full of magical energy into the bag. "We should get going, we have about 15 minutes left, so let's loot a bit more on the ground floor before we rendezvous with Master."

"Heh, I like the sound of that!"

— — — — —

Caster was bored.

Of course, it wasn't like he had the right to, but sitting next to the stoic hardass occasionally shooting arrows was bound to make someone bored.

"Hey Archer," he asked while replenishing the man's personal mana supply. "Can't you use a different Noble Phantasm for your arrows instead of Caladbolg?"

"Why do you ask?"

"Well aren't there more powerful ones you could use?"

Archer continues the conversation without as much as glancing at Caster. "Like what?"

"Gae Bolg?"

"Narcissist."

"Hey, it is pretty strong when thrown." says Caster, hyping up his spear.

"Yes, but it takes more time to project, time that we may not have." As if to make a point, Archer instantly projects another Caladbolg arrow and fires it within a blink of an eye.

"Yeah, yeah…"

With that, the roof is silent once more, with the two of them left to scan the treeline, the exact thing Caster wanted to avoid. Gah, if only he was a Lancer, then he would be in that forest fighting Berserker himself, no doubt that he'd be able to handle Berserker in that weakened state. Damn that old man and his schemes!

…Well it seemed like Berserker wouldn't be coming back for a couple of minutes, so what was the harm in a little small talk.

"So what do you think of your Master? Better than that Tohsaka girl?"

"...She's alright. She is hopelessly naive and willing to throw herself into danger to help others, but you can't help but feel enamored with her enthusiasm."

"Nah, not in the sentimental way, the OTHER way."

He glances at Caster warily. "What other way?"

Caster smiles. "Personally, she's a 7 out of 10. If she was legal though and a couple inches taller, 9 out of 10."

Archer lets out a strangled sound, nearly dropping his bow. "W-what?! Stop saying such nonsense!"

"Yep. So how about you? I saw her looking at your chest a couple of times at the mansion, so you might have a chance y'know."

"SHE WHAT?!?!"

Archer looked absolutely disgusted, which elicited a smirk from Caster. "Man, I didn't think you'd be such a prude, you a virgin or something? If you want her to stop, just ask her."

"...I'm not a virgin, and I will discuss things with her."

"Looks like I struck a nerve. ~" said the blue haired man with barely concealed amusement. "Someone seems very sensitive regarding their sex life. What, did you have your first taste in high school then never got any action ever again?"

"..."

Caster cackled with mirth. "Hoo boy, I fucking knew it!"

"That's enough unnecessary small talk, Berserker is circling back," said Archer, his face still flushed. "Don't talk now."

Glancing to where Archer was aiming, Caster saw the trees falling a couple miles away. Launching another explosive arrow, he watched the rustling of the trees stop… then continue towards the castle.

Oh that wasn't good…

Caster sees Archer steel himself, launching two more arrows in quick concession. They seemed to not affect the shape in the slightest but at the last second, the form in the trees moved to the right, away from the castle.

Caster released the breath he was holding in. "That was close… So should we call Master? It seems like your Broken Phantasms aren't distracting Berserker all that much any more."

"Indeed. I'll contact her."

— — — — —

"I've sufficiently clothed the homunculus Senpai, we should be good to bring her out of the room now."

The homunculus that Mash found was now dressed in Chaldea's standard uniform, and now you realized just how TIGHT the uniform was around the chest…

You self-consciously tug at your own jacket.

With Mash scooping the homunculus up in a bridal carry, you lead everyone out of the basement.

*Crash!* "Ah-ha!"

You exited the room to see Mordred, with her helmet now repaired, punching a hole in the wall.

"Damn, I thought it would work this time…"

You find your Saber pulling her fist out of the wall, with Gareth standing off to the side with an amused smile. "Looks like punching doesn't help either Mo," her gaze meets yours. "Hey luv! Have you got one yet?"

As if on cue, Mash and the Director emerged from the door. Gareth's eyes ping-ponged between the Director and the homunculus in Mash's arms.

"Y'know, it kind of looks like you Ms. Director."

"So I've been told…"

Before you could hear the rest of the conversation though, Emiya contacts you.

Master, we may have to leave soon.

Your brow furrows. How close is he?

Berserker got within 5 kilometers. I don't know how much longer the Broken Phantasms can distract him for.

Thanks for the info Emiya, meet us at the front door.

You clear your throat and address everyone. "I've just received a status update from Emiya, Heracles is getting too close for comfort. Mordred, Gareth. Put a cap on the looting, it's time to leave now."

You glance at Dr. Roman. "Doc, what's the fastest way out of here?"

"Northeast, Ritsuka."

"Gotcha, let's go everyone," you say.

Mordred looked like she was about to protest, but instead she just sighed. "Man, I feel like I was THIS close to finding a hidden stash…"

That aside, the party quickly makes it to the door. Meeting up with Emiya and Caster, you follow Dr. Roman's directions.

"Hey, it kind of looks-"

You interrupt Caster. "Less talking, more walking Caster."

The brisk walk was filled with nervous tension, exacerbated by Emiya's launching of Broken Phantasms.

It stayed that way for almost an hour.

"You're almost out everyone." interjected Dr. Roman. "Just a kilometer to go and you're out of Berserker's territory."

In the distance, you could make out burning buildings. Looks like the Doc was right.

You allow yourself to relax just a bit for now…

Suddenly skeletons appear!

Suddenly the skeletons disappear, all 10 of them obliterated in an instant by Mordred and Gareth. Weren't these things a threat at one point? Maybe you would have been able to go into what Emiya called Shinto now…

"Alright, you guys are now officially out of the vicinity. There's a relatively intact school there, you can rest up there once you complete the transfer," said the Doctor.

You let go of Ruby, and a wave of fatigue hits you. "Ah… it feels like I've been through the wringer, and I didn't even do anything."

"You're still green Fujimaru," said the Director. "I'm guessing that you haven't had the opportunity to practice Magecraft all that much. Your circuits have most likely not seen much use, and the strain of using too much mana, being contracted to many Servants and… whatever the hell Ruby is, might be catching up to you."

That seemed very likely…

"Hey! I'm no THING. I'm much more than that!" retorted Ruby with what you think is a pout. "Don't make me shoot you with a laser!"

"You can do that Ruby?"

"Yep! Pure Prana too!"

Hmm, maybe you should try that with Ruby on a skeleton later…

"Please don't look so enthusiastic, Fujimaru…"

The walk towards the school was uneventful, with only the occasional skeleton popping out of the woodwork and getting shattered to bone chips by one of your Servants.

Arriving at the destination, you see that the school had certainly seen better days.

Everything to the right side of the gate you entered was completely annihilated, leaving a massive crater in its wake.

You catch Emiya looking at the fairly intact main building with a look of longing. Scratch that, it was a look of nostalgia.

"Seems you really have a history with this city, Emiya," you say. "Was your previous Master a student here?"

"Yes. In fact, we've destroyed the remnants of her house earlier."

"So… You looted the house of your previous Master without a hint of remorse?"

"She would have understood, after a fair bit of complaining of course."

You decided to take his word for it.

Entering the school, you order Mordred to kick down the door of the closest classroom and have Mash lay the homunculus down gently on to the floor.

You gesture for the others to back a bit away and usher in Caster and the Director.

"Are you ready Director?"

"Of course not…" said the Director, her nervousness readily apparent.

"Hey, being a Caster isn't exactly my main job, but I was pretty damn good at magecraft," responded Caster. "It'll all be over in two minutes. I'll make sure it's done right. But if it makes things any better, I'll refrain from chanting. I heard that sort of thing can make people nervous."

The Director tried psyching herself up, taking a deep breath then smacking her palms against her face. "Alright, alright. What should I do first then?"

"Just lay down, right next to the homunculus and we can get started."

— — — — —

Olga complied with Caster's directions, lying down next to the homunculus and holding its hand.

He placed his hands over both of the bodies, and closed his eyes. An unknown rune flashed above her. She was unable to make it out due to her current position, but it really didn't matter.

Caster's mana swelled, and Olga is suddenly beset by a searing pain all over her body. She feels herself moving slowly towards the homunculus.

If Olga thought that her previous pain was bad, then it was nothing compared to what happened once Caster's mana spiked once more.

Agony. Sheer agony.

Olga felt like her body was being stretched to its limits, about to snap in half at any moment.

Tears filling her vision, she stifled a yell, forcing it down. She could tell that it was almost over from the new warmth that she felt within herself, so she decided to bear with it.

"Alright, Miss Wayward Spirit, one last rune and you're in the clear."

Only one more? Thank god it's only-

Olga was beset by the greatest pain she had ever felt in her life. Her entire body felt like it was being immolated in molten metal.

She let out a scream of pure, unrelenting pain. With every passing second, it got worse and worse. She wanted it to stop, for the hurting to stop…

And just as she felt her body was about to hit its breaking point, it did just that.

It stopped.

Taking a moment to get her breathing back under control, Olga felt… different.

She felt a bit heavier, and she now felt an intense dryness in her throat. Her clothes also felt different, so she looked down and saw…

Chaldea's uniform… It worked. It actually worked!

She forced herself up, with a great deal of effort, though she probably didn't need to with Fujimaru offering to help like the altruistic blockhead she was.

"Director, are you alright?" she said with a concerned tone, reaching out to Olga. "You were screaming bloody murder. I'm pretty sure Gareth damn near pissed herself."

"NO I DIDN'T! SERVANTS CAN'T EVEN USE THE BATHROOM!"

She took the redhead's hand. "I-I'm fine now."

Huh, her voice was deeper. That would take some getting used to.

Olga glanced back at Fujimaru, who was no doubt about to make another smart-ass comment. She was wrong though, instead Fujimaru… was blushing?

"Does it really sound that masculine?" she said, now feeling a tad self-conscious.

"N-no. It's just that your voice reminded me of someone. Nothing more! HAHAHA! Ha..." Fujimaru finished that statement with an unconvincing nervous laugh.

Christ she was right, she really couldn't lie to save her life… Well at least she didn't sound disdainful.

"Fine then, keep your judgment to yourself," said Olga with a dismissive wave of her new hand. She then made eye contact with Fujimaru.

Fujimaru then sheepishly scratched her head. "You seem relatively well-adjusted to your new body. I was sure you'd be freaking out."

"I've now got a body and a chance to return back to Chaldea. That's more than enough reason for me to be in a good mood, despite the painfulness of the ritual."

Olga continued. "I want to thank you, Fujimaru and Caster" The blue-haired man then smiled slightly at those words.

"Despite our fairly hostile views of each other, We might have gotten off on the wrong foot, so forgive me for wanting to have a redo." she held her hand out. "I am Director Olga Marie Animusphere, and I welcome you to Chaldea."

She shakes Olga's hand with a gusto. "Master Candidate No. 48, Ritsuka Fujimaru, glad to be on the team," she stated, a dopey grin on her face.

She was strange for a mage, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world, all she needed to do was work on her sharp tongue. She'll make a Master out of her yet.

"Ehehe… This sure is heartwarming!"

"Don't kill the mood Romani."

"Sorry Director…"

— — — — —

After watching the Director get sucked into the homunculus, which looked extremely painful, it looked like she was no worse for wear.

She still acted and spoke like the same old Director, but there were plenty of differences.

First, you discovered that she was significantly more durable and had stronger magical circuits from what you saw from your H.U.D. She was also taller than you now by about a couple of inches.

Secondly, there were minute differences in her appearance. Her eyes were now bright red, her skin as pale as snow and her hair was now undone and slightly shorter. Other than that, she looked mostly the same. It sure was an interesting coincidence that the homunculus she was in looked so similar to her.

Finally, her voice…

What could you say, it just sounded really, REALLY nice. You doubt that it will sound just as nice once the Director begins yelling at you again, but you decided to enjoy it while you still can.

What the hell was wrong with you? This was your BOSS you were talking about, you shouldn't be fantasizing about her voice. What were you, some sort of weirdo who gets off to a person's voice?

Leaving your reverie, you see the Director walk up to you. Well, it was more like a slow shuffle. The Director could definitely walk, but she was a bit shaky on her feet at the moment. As such, you've elected to have everyone rest at this school for a little while to let the Director get her bearings.

"Fujimaru, may I borrow your communicator again? I'm thinking of having Romani send some things over."

"Sure, knock yourself out." you reply, tossing it to her.

"Why don't you just stand up and hand it to me? It's much easier too."

"Well…"

…At that moment, Mash was fast asleep. And she was resting her head on your shoulder.

You don't know how it happened, but the second you sat down after the Director's transfer, you found yourself becoming your kohai's impromptu pillow and you were now freaking out mentally. While summoning her Noble Phantasm hadn't taken away much mana from you, it was a whole different story for Mash, and currently she was recovering some of that lost mana.

Her soft breathing was absolutely deafening next to your ear. Maybe that's why you had a weird thought about the Director, Mash being so close to you made it difficult for you to think straight…

The Director sighed. "I don't know if you're being stubborn or overly kind at this point…"

She then left to do her own thing. Hell, everyone had left to do their own thing. Emiya and Caster went to the roof of the building to scout and get some fresh air, Mordred and Gareth went on a quick walk around the building, with Ruby tagging along to presumably bother them, and the Director, yourself, and Mash had decided to stay in the classroom.

Well, you decided that you would go to Emiya and Caster, so unfortunately, you had to leave Mash here alone.

"Hey Mash," you say quietly, tapping her. "Could you um… get off my shoulder?"

She half-opens her eyes, you see that they are unfocused and she seems to be staring through you.

"Mmm…"

Her eyes close once again, falling fully asleep and going limp once more…

And her head missed your shoulder, landing onto your lap instead.

"Eeeeeee…" your face heats up once more. You resist the urge to run your hand through her hair…

"Senpai…"

You pause, hearing your kouhai call out to you.

"I can cook just as well as Gareth, Senpai…"

So she was having a dream about cooking for you? That was certainly novel… But you wonder why Gareth was in there.

She turns towards you, her eyes half-open once more and a pout plastered onto her face. "Uuuu… I'll defeat you next time…"

Ah, a rivalry. You wonder where it began…

She was now making the most PRECIOUS face imaginable, and now you couldn't hold yourself back!

You remove your jacket, folding it up as neatly as you can. Then, you proceed to give Mash a quick head pat.

"Ehehe…" Mash seemed to like it. You barely keep yourself from squee-ing from the sight of her content smile.

After that, you gently pick up her head and place it on top of your folded jacket.

"...So do you swing that way Fujimaru?"

You flinch, then see the Director looking at you with an amused smile, a backpack now hanging on her shoulder.

"N-not really. I think I still like guys too. I think…"

"Well it doesn't really matter to me." said the Director with a shrug, tossing back your communicator. "Sexual orientation doesn't influence how hard a person works after all," She then gives you a pointed look. "However, don't let thoughts of romance distract you from your mission. You seem like the person to be caught up in that sort of thing, Fujimaru."

"Did you have bad experiences with romance, Director?"

As the Director sputtered, you clarify before she can launch you to kingdom come. "Just joking, though honestly I could probably say the same for myself. Anyways, I'm gonna check out what Emiya and Caster are doing. Keep an eye on Mash for me please," you hear the Director mutter something about you giving her another migraine as you leave. Maybe you should ease up a little…

Or not. She really was fun to tease after all.

— — — — —

After a bit of searching, you find a nearby stairwell. You climb all the way to the top and open a door leading to the roof, finding Emiya and Caster.

Caster was sitting on a water tower, seemingly without a care in the world, while Emiya scanned the horizon.

"Hey, what's up Master," said the blue-haired man. "Nice to see you without the jacket."

"Oi, my eyes are up here," you retort, before taking a seat near the fence. "So, what are you guys doing?"

"Archer's on lookout again like the worrywart he is. As for myself, I'm just trying to get some fresh air, although that's hard to come by with all this smoke…" he continues, raising an eyebrow questioningly. "So why are you up here Master?"

"Mostly the same thing. I haven't much time to rest here, so I thought some fresh air might do me some good. But, I also have some questions."

"What kind of questions?"

"Well… I'm kind of a novice in this whole Mage thing. I've only got about 2 days worth of training and I've been a Master for less than 4 hours. I figured I should ask you since you're a Caster and because you seem more patient than the Director."

"...What?" Emiya suddenly turned around, flabbergasted. "So you're saying that you're a Mage that has only trained two days in her life and who's only experience as a Master was the fights we had 2 hours ago?"

"I mean basically. I only found out about Magecraft a month ago."

Caster then lets loose a hearty laugh. "Oh man, I knew you were green, but I didn't know you were THAT green! And you still killed Lancer and Assassin! I'd hate to see you, no scratch that, I'd LOVE to see you get more experienced. Who knows what you'll do!"

Well at least he wasn't looking down on you.

Emiya on the other hand just looked at you, seemingly disappointed. "So that's why you just stood back and did nothing. Even though you had a Mystic Code with seemingly infinite mana, you had no way to take advantage of it."

"H-hey! I can use Gandr! Even though it takes me 2 minutes of concentration to cast…" you mutter that last part to yourself, but judging from Caster's growing laughter and Emiya's exasperated sigh, they heard it.

After Caster's laughter died down, he wiped his eyes. "Ah, it feels nice to have a reason to laugh again… Alright then young lady, ask away. We have plenty of time after all."

You think to yourself on what to ask first, before settling on one that seemed good enough.

"What's with you saying I've got Mystic Eyes?"

Caster grinned. "Well cause you have them. Now I don't know what kind of Mystic Eyes you have, but I know that they're on the lower end of the power spectrum. You can tell from the dim, uniform glow they give off."

"Though, I am curious. What do you see with your Mystic Eyes?"

"Oh, I just see some information, namely the constitution and mana levels of anyone and anything I see," you reply. "I can get information on my and your guys' skills, check my own constitution and mana, and even check the weather. For some reason though, my H.U.D. seems to resemble a menu straight out of a video game…"

"What's a video game?" asked Caster.

"Maybe I'll explain it to you later once we get back to Chaldea…"

"Alright then. Anyways, from your description, you seem to have high-tier Appraisal Mystic Eyes. It isn't that much different from normal Magecraft, but they can be pretty handy if used correctly and you're using them fairly well from the looks of it. There's probably a way you can supercharge them to get more information-"

You perked up at that remark.

"-Buuut if you do it incorrectly, you'll most likely blind yourself for life."

And that excitement was dashed in the blink of an eye…

Caster chuckled. "Oh Master, you're adorable. It's funny seeing you get all excited like a child on their birthday."

"...Go to hell…" you say with a slight pout.

"Okay! Any other questions?" he says expectantly.

You think once more, before settling on your next question.

"Could you teach me some Magecraft, Caster? It doesn't have to be something too complex, just something that could help us down the line."

Caster scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "Well, I'm not sure I'd be the best teacher… All I know are runes, and those typically take more than just an hour to master."

Well that was a bust. Before you ask another question, Emiya walks over to you.

"I know a thing or two from back when I was alive," he says. "If you want me to teach you, I'll give you a quick crash course."

"Really?" you say with a grin. "You'd do that?"

"I'd rather not have my Master die because of a rookie mistake."

"Man, way to ruin my vibe…"

He takes a seat right next to you, grabbing a pipe from… somewhere. You're pretty sure he didn't project it, so you wonder where he got the thing.

"You know what Reinforcement is right? Where one pours mana into an object to strengthen its structure?" he says.

"Yeah, I've used it several times already via my Mystic Code."

Emiya projects a copy of that same pipe, after handing the original to you. "Well you don't have your Mystic Code on you right now, and in the future you might find yourself without it or Ruby to bail you out. So as elementary as this seems, it could very well save your life in the future."

"Imagine the object you are trying to reinforce as a chalice in your mind's eye, and imagine your mana as a liquid you use to fill up the chalice. Pour in too much, the cup overflows and the object destabilizes. Pour in too little, the Reinforcement will be woefully inadequate and could wear off at any moment."

Emiya then demonstrated on his copy of the pipe, with the distinct green-lines of a successful reinforcement crisscrossing its surface. He looks at you expectantly. "Now you try, Master."

You gulp. Firing up your circuits, you try to control your breath and try to picture what Emiya described.

No dice. All you could think of was a tacky plastic cup… However, an idea pops into your head. You activate your H.U.D. and think of Reinforcement again.

You are then greeted with a sort of meter, not unlike the pitching meter of those baseball games that Kanata always loved to play. 'Well I'll be damned…' you think to yourself. You begin to concentrate and pour your mana into the pipe.

You watch as an indicator on the gauge you saw slowly went downwards, feeling your mana flow into the pipe as you tracked it.

Then suddenly, the indicator shot forward very quickly, causing you to stop pouring mana prematurely. Crap, you forgot how fast those pitching meters were… It might take a little while to get used to the timing.

"Master, why did you stop? Also, why did you flinch so hard? Did your circuits act up?"

Emiya begins to fuss over you, which honestly felt pretty nice. "I'm fine Emiya, just got a bit surprised that's all."

"By what?"

"Something that popped up on my H.U.D."

He nods, then takes your pipe, inspecting it closely. "Hm. This is fine for a first attempt. However, you'll have to pour mana for a bit longer next time. I'd have you try again, but I'd probably drain your mana supply trying to get you to perfect it, so maybe you could try it later when you have the time," He then stows the pipe away… somewhere.

"Now onto another beginner Magecraft, Magic Circles…"

— — — — —

Aside from your half-decent reinforced pipe, your forays into other branches of Magecraft were… less successful…

"Maybe you should just stick to Reinforcement, Master," said Caster, pity in his eyes. "I've never seen someone fail at drawing a circle so badly…"

"SHUT UP!"

"How did you manage to erase your own memory? You were pointing your finger at me," said Emiya.

You felt like curling up into a ball and disappearing…

"Well, the issues with your Magical Circles can be fixed with practice. Remember, it's all in the shoulder, don't move your wrist. As for the Memory Altercation… I think you should see the Director for that, she might be more knowledgeable on that subject than I am."

Despite your frankly spectacular failures, you felt that you learned quite a bit on Magecraft. If you could get the Magical Circles down, you could make your own Bounded Fields for defense. Though they would be fairly weak, Ruby could probably strengthen them.

The less said about your piss-poor attempt at Memory Altercation, the better… If some civilian saw you practicing Magecraft, you were SCREWED.

"I think that's enough for now, I don't want you to lose too much mana."

You glance at your Mana Level.

'Mana: 120 / 200 MP'

Huh, you did use quite a bit of mana. Guess you should take Emiya's advice.

Another thought crosses your mind as you take a seat.

"Hey Caster, we still haven't formalized our contract, have we?"

A look of realization passes his face. "Y'know, you're right," He hops down, and saunters over, taking a seat next to you.

He flashes a wry smile. "How about you start it then?"

"Alright then… Will you, Caster Servant, Cu Chulainn, join me in my goal of saving the world?"

"I will. I am bound by your will, Master."

You feel your Command Seals sear, and you feel just a little more tired. Contract successful you guess.

"That was certainly much simpler than I thought it would be, I thought that I'd have to say more," You remark.

"Nah, contracts are surprisingly simple. Hell, as long as both parties are willing, contracts can be formed with anything that has magical energy."

Well that was good to know.

"Since you're contracted to me, I think I can strengthen you now," you state, fishing some Blazes from your short pockets. "Have some too, Emiya," You give both of them two Blazes each.

Caster inspects one of the Blazes before crushing it in his hand, mana flowing into him with a small burst of energy.

So cool…

"Tryhard," said Emiya dismissively, casually popping one of his Blazes into his mouth.

"C'mon. I don't want to eat those things…"

"Is the great Cú Chulainn scared of a little crystal of mana?" taunted the dark-skinned Archer. You couldn't tell if Emiya was teasing Caster or saying it out of spite…

"Go fuck yourself Archer. I ain't scared of anything," dead set on proving Emiya wrong, Caster ate his other Blaze with an audible crunch.

He immediately retched.

"Ugh! What are these things?! Why do they taste overly fermented beans?!"

An amused grin crossed Emiya's face. "Well, they're an acquired taste," he says smugly. "Who knew that the Child of Light hated the taste of natto?"

That got a laugh out of you, despite how stupid the jab was. Maybe it was the way he said or maybe it was the tone of his voice, but you found it so funny.

And very familiar… He reminded you of your dad whenever he decided to get a little snarky. You chuckle to yourself, you decide you're going to call him and your mother once you get back to Chaldea.

"You're a real piece of work, aren't you Archer," said the blue-haired man with barely concealed annoyance.

"Think of it as payback for that earlier inappropriate question."

Caster then turned away with a huff. "I bet you were a one-pump chump anyways…"

Emiya gave him a downright ICY smile.

"Do not discuss such vulgar things like that in front of Master, Caster," Emiya then… projected his swords?!

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" exclaimed Caster, twirling his staff.

Then the two buffoons began fighting!

"Hey, stop it you two!"

"Well I'll say you're certainly Archer, you even have the same annoying fighting style!"

"And you are using your staff as if it was your spear."

Were they ignoring you?!

"I said stop already!"

"I'll end this in one blow."

"I'd like to see you try Archer!"

"STOP FIGHTING OR I'LL COMMAND SEAL YOU BOTH!"

After sorting out your two rowdy Servants and chewing them out thoroughly, you take a seat, exhausted.

"Why do you two hate each other so much?"

"I just don't like him, Master." said Emiya. "And this version of him is somehow still more bearable…"

"I don't hate this version of Archer," states Caster. "He's just so wound up all the time, and I can't resist taking shots at him."

You sigh. "Alright… please just don't do this again…"

The three of you sit in silence for a couple of minutes, before someone opens the door to the roof.

It's Mash, who was holding your Mystic Code. Her face was also a bit red for some reason.

"S-senpai, you shouldn't take off your Mystic Code yet. Ruby isn't with you right now, so you shouldn't be without any protection. You never know when you might need the Evasion spell," she says, handing it to you.

"Thanks Mash," you reply, putting the uniform back on. "Have a good nap?"

"Yeah…"

She stands there awkwardly for a few seconds, before taking a seat next to you.

"...So what shampoo do you use Senpai?"

"Pantene, why?"

"...No reason…" Mash's face got a little more red for some reason…

Caster breaks the awkward silence. "So… are you sure there's nothing between you two?"

"What no! We just met each other today, there's nothing between us! Nothing at all. HAHAHAHA! HaHaHa… ha."

Okay that wasn't your best moment…

"Senpai's right Caster, there's nothing between us," your kouhai stated, though she sounded a little melancholic. A look of realization then crossed her face. "Ah, right! Mordred wanted me to get you Senpai. Seems I almost forgot."

"Why'd you forget Shielder?" asked Emiya.

"...No reason. Apparently, Gareth found some Blazes while she was looting the school's infirmary and Mordred said that there might be more artifacts here according to her Intuition."

Interesting, so there could be more resources here…

"That seems promising. C'mon you two, let's go."

Getting back to the ground floor, you're greeted by Gareth and Ruby.

"Hey luv! You've got a good rest?" she says with a smile.

"It was alright." You then see Gareth holding a variety of bottles and a couple small packages. "Whatcha got there?"

"Oh these things? They're some medical supplies. Sure you can heal yourself with a bit of mana, but you don't want to waste mana on flesh wounds. So I figured that I'd get you some antibiotics, bandages and rubbing alcohol."

Wow, at this point she was more of a big sister than you were. "Thanks Gareth," you tell her, as she puts the medicine and 6 Blazes into the bag.

However, Ruby seemed to be miffed. "Wasting mana? I've been giving Master infinite mana! She's never going to run out as long as she's got me."

"Well, maybe sometime down the road, Master won't have you. So I just want to be prepared for that possibility."

Ruby bent back, as if to retort, but stopped. "Nah, I shouldn't say that. Don't wanna raise death flags… Crap, saying that is its own death flag!"

Death flags? What was this, a visual novel?

Mordred then walked into the room. "Aight, since you're here Master, that means we have the okay," She points to you, Mash, and Caster. "Master, Shieldy, and Archer, you're with me. Caster, you're with Gareth and the stick."

"The stick?! I have a name you know!"

Mordred then ushered the three of you outside, in the opposite direction of where Gareth's group was heading.

Mordred let out a sigh. "That damn stick… How could an inanimate object have such a rotten personality?"

"Well when dealing with those types, it's best to not hold things too personally, it'll just make it easier for them to insult you."

"Go fuck yourself Archer," Mordred muttered something about her helmet not looking stupid. Looks like you were going to have another discussion with Ruby…

Heading to the only other intact building, Mordred kicked the door down again and turned to the three of you.

"Archer, you and I head to the north side. Master, you search the south side with your girlfriend."

"WE'RE NOT DATING!"

With the two of you both thoroughly embarrassed, you headed south.

"Man, why does everyone think we're a couple?" you say to Mash, after having been silent for a good five minutes. "Are we really that close?" Though you wish you two could be more, it was important to respect boundaries. Plus, you've only known Mash for about a day, even if you already held a torch for her it would be too rash to jump into a relationship. Hell, you didn't even know if she felt the same way…

"Well, I heard that stressful situations could allow people to be more open and through that, become closer," said Mash. "Maybe that's what happened between us Senpai."

"Maybe," you reply. "Alright, I've got this room, you check the room next door Mash.

After scouring the entirety of your side of the building, you found absolutely nothing.

"Man, I really thought there would be more stuff here…" You say, munching on a donut you found.

"Senpai… Should you be eating that?"

"It's a little stale, but they were still in their box, so it should be fine."

"...Whatever you say Senpai…"

"Want one?"

"No thanks Senpai."

"Your loss."

Waiting at the entrance for the others, you were famished, so stale or not you were eating the donuts.

Scarfing down the donut in your hand, you reach for another and devour it too.

"Master. What in god's name are you eating?"

Emiya was looking at the box of donuts in disgust.

"Some donuts I found in a classroom," you reply. "Is something the manner?"

He grabbed the box and in an instant the box disappeared.

"Hey! What did you do Emiya?!"

"The right thing."

As you sputter in confusion, Mash strides up to Emiya and places her hand on his arm, a look of adoration on her face. "Thank you Emiya, for doing what I was too afraid to do."

"No problem Mash."

But your donuts…

While you were moping, Mordred returned, looking similarly dejected from her body language.

"Damn it, I really thought there was more stuff in this school."

"Well there were only about 4 Magi in this school, and I'm fairly certain that only one ever actually brought stuff to school."

Mordred grumbled in frustration. "Whatever… let's see if the other group had any luck."

Shuffling back to the main school building, you see Gareth, Caster, and Ruby talking animatedly.

"...and I say that Master's best quality is her kindness!" says Gareth.

You don't really think that you're that kind. You just try to be courteous to everyone…

"Damn, now I feel bad for thinking about only her body…"

You sneak up behind Caster. "...What was that about my body Caster?"

"You've got really nice legs?"

*THWACK*

"Sorry for hitting you Caster…"

"It's fine Master, let bygones be bygones."

You really need to control your temper.

After checking in with Gareth's group, you found that she had also found nothing. So with everyone in tow, you all made the trek towards the cave where Saber was.

"Plus you've already apologized about three times," said Caster. "Your sincerity isn't in question."

"I KNOCKED YOU UNCONSCIOUS! HOW IS THAT ALRIGHT?!"

"Exactly. Bygones."

Mordred and Ruby didn't stop laughing until everyone had left the school and you had nearly given poor Gareth a heart attack.

The Director however, seemed to be fussing over you with Emiya. That was kind of out of character for her…

"Why in god's name would you punch your own Servant?!" she exclaimed.

"I'm sorry, Director…" you respond meekly.

"Don't you 'I'm sorry' me! You broke your wrist!"

"Exactly Master. You had your Mystic Code, meaning you could have reinforced your arm. Then you REALLY could have hurt him."

"Archer!"

"Hahaha! Man, someone really wants me dead!"

Desperate to change the subject, you turn to Emiya. "H-hey Emiya, since we're about to fight an alternate version of you, how would you go about it?"

The Archer ponders for a moment. "Hmm. I would get overwhelmed if there were multiple Servants ganging up on me and had blocked all my escape routes. Not to mention, I would have no time to snipe the enemy Master if I was locked in melee combat. So perhaps that can work."

Huh. What a simple strategy.

"So, we just have everyone rush him?"

"Essentially. Hell, if we're lucky enough you won't even need to use Ruby."

Ruby then interjected. "True.~ You do want to save your energy for the Saber fight after all."

"Right… Saber…"

Mordred, believe it or not, had been in deep thought ever since the party had left the school. You suspect that had something to do with the corrupted Servant.

You gulp in nervous anticipation. Saber was a corrupted version of King Arthur, no doubt that Mordred was itching to fight her…

"Hey, one thing at a time, Mordred. We'll deal with Saber after Archer, so don't let your mind wander.

"...Loud and clear, Master."

Entering the cave, you see that it's not exactly what you'd define as a 'cave'. It was more like a cavern.

The ceiling was so high, you couldn't even see it through the murky gloom and the air so damp, you could feel water on your face.

You grab Ruby and transform, lighting up the cavern and revealing a multitude of stalactites and even a small lake.

"Did anything like this exist in Fuyuki City?" asked Mash to no one in particular.

"Maybe," replied Emiya. "This seems half-natural, and half-man made, like a workshop."

Sadly, the quiet introspection was soon interrupted by the sound of rattling bones.

Mordred, Gareth. Take care of those skeletons.

You've got it.
Yes, Master.

With the two rushing into the fray, you see that the six skeletons they were about to fight were… different.

They had a steely gray look to them, not to mention they were twice as tall and wielded two swords instead of one. Despite that, they fell all the same to Mordred's relentless strikes and Gareth's calculated blows.

Well, they looked cool, if that's any consolation…

"There goes my personal hit squad… *sigh* and after all the effort I had to go through to summon them. Dragon Fangs aren't exactly the easiest thing to find."

That voice… It sounded like Emiya, but… off somehow. Then you see him, perched on a stalagmite.

No way… That face, that spiky hair…

Those eyes…

"Fancy meeting you again Caster. And you've allied yourself with quite the colorful cast of characters. An alternate version of myself, two Knights of The Round Table, and three interlopers. Should be a hard battle, but I'll be able to manage."

"Ah, Archer, always the loyal follower. How about we end this?"

Before everyone can launch into battle. One word slips past your lips, and you aren't able to stop it.

"Dad?..."

"I KNEW IT! I KNEW YOU WERE MY DAUGHTER FROM AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE!"

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU KNEW?!"

Emiya had a feeling you were his kid?! Since when?! Wait…

You… checked him out when you first summoned him!

"GAH! NOOOO!!! I'm not into incest!"

"DON'T SAY THAT! IT MAKES THINGS WORSE!"

Caster butt in, but it was a welcome butt in. "Uh, guys. I'm pretty sure we should be taking this more seriously."

Crap, he was right… The Director was boring holes into you with her withering gaze.

Mordred put her hand on your shoulder. "I feel you Master, sudden revelations about being related to someone can overwhelm a person. Though I will say that I reacted differently during mine…"

"So that's it huh? Just going to treat me as a one note punchline?!"

The blackened Emiya then launched a hail of swords at the party forcing you all to dodge, with Mash electing to just grab you and the Director and block the rain of steel with her shield.

"Fine then. It'll make it all the easier for me to kill you all."

You take a deep breath and smack yourself on the face. Time to focus, possible familial relationships and you unintentionally lusting over a version of your father can be sorted later.

Right now, you have a job to do.
