The Afterimage of Spring

Summary:

Kihyun photographs light the way some people memorize prayers—obsessed with endings, with the moment things slip away.

Minhyuk stumbles into the photography club with ink-stained fingers and too much laughter for the quiet darkroom, and somehow, everything begins to shift.

Some photographs are about what was. Some are about what might be.
And some capture the exact moment everything changes.

Chapter 1: aperture

Notes:

this story grew from a single image: minhyuk’s laugh caught on film, blurry and bright, the kind of accident that changes everything.

i wanted to write about noticing—how love can feel like light slowly finding focus.

thank you for reading, for pausing with me in the red glow of the darkroom. 🌷

Chapter Text

The darkroom always smells like dust and oranges.

Not real oranges—just the phantom scent that clings to fixer and film, like citrus through fog. Kihyun likes that part most. The moment before the image appears. The pause between nothing and proof.

He moves through the dim red light with a precision that comes from obsession. The water ripples, prints sway gently on the line, and time itself slows to match the rhythm of a heartbeat measured in shutter clicks.

This is where Kihyun photographs light the way some people memorize prayers. Not the light itself—never that obvious—but the way it dies. The moment before sunset bleeds into dusk. The second after a door closes and the hallway dims. He's obsessed with the almost, the just-barely, the not-quite-anymore. His camera sees in exhales.

He doesn't hear Minhyuk come in. Not right away.

There's the soft thud of a bag against the floor, then the unmistakable sound of someone breathing too loud for this room. Kihyun turns, the chemical light washing half his face in gold.

Minhyuk stands awkwardly by the sink, sleeves rolled up, grin too big for the quiet.

"I didn't think it'd actually be this dark," he says, voice soft but bright. "Kind of defeats the purpose of photography, doesn't it?"

Kihyun blinks once. "You're the senior project, right?"

"That's me," Minhyuk says, extending a hand that Kihyun doesn't take because his own are wet. "Minhyuk. Engineering major. I break things for a living."

"That's comforting."

"I fix them sometimes," Minhyuk offers, undeterred. "Eventually."

Kihyun almost smiles. Almost.

Later, when Minhyuk has already knocked over a bottle of stop bath and exposed an entire roll of film to sunlight because he thought the changing bag was a regular bag, Hyunwoo finds Kihyun reorganizing the chemical shelf for the third time.

"He's going to drive you insane," Hyunwoo says, arms crossed over his broad chest, but there's fondness in his voice.

"He already has."

"Good. You needed someone to mess up your perfect system." Hyunwoo grins. "Besides, he asked if we develop memories here. How could I turn that down?"

Kihyun doesn't look up from his contact sheet. "Sounds exhausting."

But he's learned that the most important moments always announce themselves quietly.
