Somehow, even with his wounds from the battles and barely making it out alive, it seemed like Neji's chains had been broken after the war ended. His cage had been opened when the seal had disappeared from his forehead, his Byakugan rendered unusable for the rest of his life– he was free now, and Lee loved seeing how happy he was, bright smiles decorating his partner's lips every day. No more fear or shame on his soul.
They didn't need to keep up the act of being ‘just eternal rivals’ in public anymore, and his boyfriend didn't think twice before holding his hand or kissing his cheek in middle of the village, entwining their fingers as they walked around; no matter how serious Neji looked, the taijutsu master knew him well enough to notice the overflowing joy in his soul, how it seemed like his body was lighter somehow. His mere soul.
Perhaps his pace was slower than it'd ever been, his body still recovering from it all months later, but Lee had never seen his boyfriend so happy. He was able to finally spread his wings and fly away from his uncle’s claws, from the complex traditional politics of his Clan, and he'd taken the chance without thinking twice.
And Lee got to wake up every morning alongside the love of his life, snuggling with him for some minutes before it was time to train– and maybe be late for his own schedule, sometimes charmed by Neji's playful kisses and hugs. Honestly, he did like getting distracted by such things and nothing serious; plus, the brunet understood how important his training routine was and let him go after a bit, waving him goodbye before lazily covering himself with blankets once more until the sun finally appeared in the sky.
In no time they'd adjusted to living together, though in the middle of physical therapies and missions the taijutsu master realized a very special date was coming up– their fourth anniversary. Many people had told them they had to get married, but they were happy just like that; there was no need for any paperwork to make their love ‘official’. If Neji wanted to have a wedding, Lee would oblige with a grin, yet that wasn't the case.
His boyfriend didn't quite like big celebrations or events, rather enjoying the littlest things of life instead of showing off.
So when he woke up on the date he was expecting with excitement, and his partner immediately curled up on his chest to forbid him from waking up as usual, the taijutsu master didn't even try to break apart from his hold. Neji hummed and kissed his cheek, getting comfortable on top of him without a single word. There was a sleepy smile on his lips, a gesture that became bigger as Lee returned the embrace.
“Handsome, do you know what day is it today?” he whispered, receiving a curious lavender gaze in response. His partner was still more asleep than awake, it seemed. “It has been four years since you asked me to be your boyfriend! Four years since you have made me the happiest man on the planet! I love you so much!”
Recognition flashed through Neji’s eyes by then, a blush spreading through his face in a heartbeat. Lee kissed his cheeks and then his lips, chuckling when the other man remained silent through it all, receiving the affection and retuning it to some extent. Too groggy to produce any kind of meaningful sound or word, still trying to say something quietly– judging by the stronger hug, by the entwining of their fingers together. It was still too early anyways, so the taijutsu master simply remained still, letting his partner get as comfortable as he desired.
They'd perhaps do something later, but for now cuddling for a while was just fine.
