Translation Book

Summary:

A translation book for phrases and terms I use in the "Hero of Nobody" series.

Notes:

The translations go like this.

Thing to be translated - "Basically what the tyranid is conveying" - Actual meaning

Work Text:

Battlemaker - "The evil that feeds on battles." - The Tyranids are aware that the Warp contains four big entities that each feed on a certain thing. Their word for Khorne.

Creator - "The one of us who can create more." - A Norn Queen.

Deathcry - "The cry that makes more creators." - What is called the Hydra Effect, that triggers bioships, on the death of a Norn Queen, to calve.

Descendant Hive - "The group that decimates resistance on a planet." - Tyranids see Genestealer Cults as extensions of the Hive, and once they have served their purpose, it is only natural for them to be absorbed back into the Hive. The Tyranids aren't entirely sure why they fight back.

Diseasemaker - "The evil that feeds on disease." - The Tyranids are aware that the Warp contains four big entities that each feed on a certain thing. Their word for Nurgle.

Flamepool - "The place that changes us." - To mirror the Starpool, Tyranids use the Flamepool. Stars are difficult to catch, while fire is much easier to make, much more tangible. The Flamepool allows the Tyranids to mutate, and for the Hive to test out new ideas.

Gripperclaw - "The claw that allows climbing." - The Hero of Nobody has one "claw" that is specifically built to help ascend. It has a similar function to a Spring-loaded camming device, it is located where the metacarpal pad on a cats paw would be.

Guidance - "Orders." - The direction a synapse creature gives to the rest of the swarm.

Hive - "Our group." - This used to refer to a Tyranid Hive, that would work like you would expect a hive to work, with a queen, workers, drones, but as you can see it doesn't work that way anymore. It is now interchangeable with some connotations of the word "swarm".

Invader - "The creature that lets us travel onto ships." - A boarding worm.

Memorymaker - "The evil that feeds on knowledge." - The Tyranids are aware that the Warp contains four big entities that each feed on a certain thing. Their word for Tzeentch. They communicate about memory in the same way we do about knowledge.

Place of Evil - "The place where the evil four reside." - 'Evil' is not something usually understood by a Tyranid. Not in the way we do. For a Tyranid, evil is being wasteful. Going out of your way to tear your food apart. To rip and tear and not eat. They kill trillions, but they consume.

Pleasuremaker - "The evil that feeds on excess." - The Tyranids are aware that the Warp contains four big entities that each feed on a certain thing. Their word for Slaanesh.

Shimmering Lights - "Remembering." - How the Tyranids think of remembering.

Starpool - "The place our memories go." - The collective whole of the Hive Mind can hold the memories the Tyranids collect, and then some. Tyranids, on instinct, pull and grab memories in an ever flow. If one had to visualize it, it would be like pulling a star from the sky to take a look.

Swarm - "The group of a lot of us." - A group of Tyranids, that's moving ever outwards to expand. Swarm can mean two different things. Either what the Imperium calls a Hive Fleet, or referring to the Hive itself.

The Burden - "All of our memories." - Tyranids are not able to hold all of their memories that they obtain, as there's far too many. The Burden is however many memories a Tyranid is able to hold on their own.

The Connection - "How we communicate with each other." - Referring to the method that allows swarms to communicate and absorb information.

Traveler - "That ship we use to travel on." - What they call a Narvhal.
