In this light

Summary:

In the quiet hours of an amber afternoon, Akaashi learns that he was never unworthy of love. Not when Bokuto keeps choosing him, again and again.

Work Text:

In the court, Bokuto is the embodiment of power.

Fiery. Bombastic. Brutal, even. Passionate, most of all.

Akaashi adores this Bokuto. This is the Bokuto he fell in love with. The one who makes him feel alive, who generously brings people up along with him in his light. He wants the world to know this Bokuto, to see just how bright he shines.

However, there is also a Bokuto he wishes to keep to himself. The one who touches him so very gently, who brushes his hair out of his face, who kisses him with such tenderness it almost makes him cry.

He does not deserve this Bokuto. To be the recipient of such affection is something only a person who saved a million people in their past life merits. But for as long as he’s allowed to have this, by a stroke of luck, as long as Bokuto would let him, he will treasure it, lock it in a safe box, and keep the key in his heart.

“Keiji, baby,” Bokuto sings into his collarbone, his hand cupping the back of his neck.

“Koutarou.”

Bokuto looks at him. The sunlight filtered through the window hits his golden eyes. Akaashi cards his fingers through his hair, some escaping and falling down his forehead. He wishes he’d be the only one to see this particular image.

“Let’s stay here forever.” Passionate still, just in a different light.

“I doubt that will be very practical.”

“Keijiii,” Bokuto says, drawing out the last syllable, smushing his face into the crook of Akaashi’s neck. Akaashi lets out a small smile, a bigger one when he feels a kiss. Then Bokuto is peppering kisses everywhere as his hands make their way to his sides.

“Stop,” he warns, the smile heard in his voice.

“Nope!” Bokuto pushes himself up with one hand and shoves the other under Akaashi’s shirt to tickle his side. Akaashi squirms, trying to push Bokuto off as he’s forced into a fit of unintended giggles, to no avail. “Not until you agree to stay here forever!”

“Koutarou– I swear–!”

“Say it!”

“Fine! We’ll stay— forever,” he laughs, cupping Bokuto’s face with both hands. When he opens his eyes, he’s met with Bokuto staring back at him, a warm smile etched on his face. Bokuto brushes a stray lock from his face.

“You’re beautiful, Keiji.”

Warmth. He leans in at the same time Bokuto does, their lips meeting in a deep kiss. Bokuto crawls himself up right above Akaashi, keeping their mouths together.

How long will this be able to last? How long until the universe realizes this is too good for me to be true?

He spreads his hands across the expanse of Bokuto’s back, trying to feel as much as he can. Bokuto places a hand on the back of his neck, further deepening the kiss. For every gesture he does, Bokuto gives back.

Bokuto pulls away just enough to breathe, his mouth still near Akaashi’s ear. His breath warms the space between them.

Akaashi opens his eyes. Outside, the afternoon softens— everything in the room caught in a slow, amber light.

“Keiji.”

Akaashi hums, words stuck in his throat.

“Stay with me forever, okay?”

Ah.

“Of course,” he breathes, “Koutarou.”
