She cowers, trapped under a frightful gaze. Pain engulfs his shoulder. She can’t breathe. There’s a weight on his chest, pressure and panic mounting. He can’t breathe.
They wake up.
Breathe out together.
Here in their rooms in the Hong Kong Shatterdome. Mako shifts to lie on her back, runs her palm firmly down his left arm, smoothing away tingling nerves. Raleigh lays his right one across her waist, curling fingers over her hipbone, head tucked into her side.
They breathe. Phantom bodies pressing against each other. Taking comfort that they are both here, sharing the Drift.
Another day awaits.
