Work Text:
For as long as she could remember, one of Evelyn's favorite hobbies had been making flower crowns. It just brought them a sense of calm, really. Usually, after they were finished, one of two things happened to them. Either she threw them into the sea, or gave them to friends, maybe family. Of course, they always wilted eventually, but hey, it was the thought that counted, right? That's what she had always been told.
So, she sat in the middle of Time's Hyrule, making flower crowns for friends once more.
"Hey," a voice greeted, startling Evelyn out of her thoughts. Turning around, she saw that it was Hyrule, who sat next to her, looking at the pile of flower crowns at their feet. "I didn't know you knew how to make these, honestly. Do you even have flowers in your era?"
Evelyn just shrugged, finishing up the one that they were making. "I learned from a friend." She explained. "And yes, we do have flowers in my era. I haven't seen very many on Outset though…"
Hyrule nodded. "Huh, nice."
A comfortable silence settled over the two, with Evelyn getting to work on the next crown, and Hyrule just watching, deciding not to say a word. With the cool breeze brushing by the two of them, the silent company of a friend, and the faint banter of the Chain (she hadn't wandered off that far from the Ranch), Evelyn felt at peace. The texture of the flower stems was comforting, too.
After a few minutes, Hyrule spoke again. "So, what do you think you'll do with them afterward?"
Evelyn just smiled, looking back up at Hyrule. "You'll have to wait and see, for that." She turned back to their work.
Hyrule chuckled, but besides that, he was silent. For a moment, anyway. Because after just a few seconds of silence, he asked, "did you know that fairies consider flower crowns a form of protection?"
Evelyn blinked, processing this new information. After spending more time than was necessary trying to think of a good reply, all they said was "what?"
Hyrule nodded. "Yeah. Specifically, those made with real flowers, and not fake ones. They say that there's a form of natural magic in them, and wearing one is a symbol of protection, as well as trust from the giver. It's a beautiful thing, really."
"That's sweet." Evelyn replied, setting down the (now finished) flower crown into the pile. She looked over said pile for a bit, then came to a decision. She took out a flower crown.
The crown was made of yellow roses, although Evelyn knew it was a bad idea to make it out of them, mostly due to the thorns. In her defense though, she'd tried to make the crown in a way that it'd hurt Hyrule as little as possible.
She handed the flower crown to Hyrule. "I thought that you might want yours first." She told him.
He froze for a moment— not because he was scared, Evelyn guessed, but because of what Hyrule had just told them about flower crowns. Then, he smiled, gratefully taking it.
"Thank you." He told them, putting the crown on his head and bowing it slightly. "I appreciate it, seriously."
Evelyn smiled back. "It's nothing, really. I just wanted to do something for my friends. Besides, this is a hobby of mine."
"It's still nice of you to do," was the reply that she got.
They decided to just nod. "Do you think the others will like their crowns, too?" She asked, gaze drifting to the pile of six other flower crowns.
Hyrule nodded. "Yeah. You're pretty good at these, y'know."
"Thanks,"
"Of course. Now, let's get back before Wolfie comes looking for us." That was a statement Evelyn couldn't disagree with, so she nodded. Weren't they forgetting something, though? A flower crown, maybe?
No matter. Evelyn just picked up the ones they had made and ran after Hyrule, excited to show the others her hard work.
