Work Text:

And, to I ask, do what end do we fight? Certainly, we hope to keep our lives, but is that a realistic hope against the horde of Stalrito? There are those among us who propose migration, leaving entirely for the lands south of the Great Chasm. Few, if any Rito, have ventured there in millenia, but perhaps we can find ourselves a new home there. The burden of the decision has fallen upon me and a few of my close confidants. We all know that there are no correct decisions here, that every decision we make will become a disaster. I can only hope that the desperation we face is remembered. – From the Selthāturi Codex, page 31. The next few chapters go on to describe the deliberations about migration. The Selthāturi Codex’s relationship to the Second Selthāturi Codex, however, is unclear. Most historians posit from differences in the writing style that they are of differing authorships.

Kain felt the wind flow through his feathers for the first time in centuries. There had been some poor Hylian fisherman from Meldu Village whose boat had gotten tossed about in a storm, eventually leading him to come ashore far further north than he had intended. He likely would have returned to tell the tale, if not for the fact that a few of his Stalrito had happened to be walking along the beach at the time. Kain had had them inject his Gloom into the man, and a few hours later, Kain had embodied himself. Certainly, it was a weak body; Kain knew that he would need more power if he was to achieve his goals. The magics surrounding Ganon’s body, for example, were set out by the Hero and the Princess in days long past, and Kain did not doubt that he would be unable to break them in this form. After all, as a spirit in the Gloom, was he not simply an extension of Ganon? Certainly, Kain was his own person, but for the purposes of the magic, the distinction would be purely academic. There was also the matter of his fellow spirits. Kain knew that it would be for the best if certain elements of his intentions escaped their notice. What they did not know certainly could not hurt them, and he did not wish to bother himself with unnecessary interference.

He had spent a few weeks enjoying the feeling of having a mortal body once more as it slowly shifted to match his own form. It was an inevitable part of embodiment, but Kain relished in seeing his feathers grow out, watching the Hylian’s arms shift to wings, and feeling as he grew closer to his proper nine feet in height every day. He had not tried to fly until he was complete, but now he crossed the Great Chasm into Hyrule proper. The Rito had fled across the chasm long before, fleeing his Stalrito. Kain knew that they were still around, but he could at least use this body to discover what had become of them. As he saw the basalt pillar with what appeared to be traditional Northern Peninsula architecture, Kain knew that this would be the place. They had picked a suitable place to settle, certainly; perhaps drier than they had been in before, but the temperature was much the same. The mountains to the north even reminded him of his own homeland. Kain came down and landed.

A short Rito with red feathers stuck a spear in his face. “You! Put on some clothes, you freak!”

Kain chuckled slightly. What was there to hide, exactly? His cloaca was well-covered by feathers. Besides, none of the Hylian’s clothes would fit him now. Kain took a glance down at the Rito, noticing he had quite nice thighs. He bent down and picked up the Rito by the talons, drawing on a bit of the Gloom for some added strength. Kain was certainly much larger, but with the Gloom’s help, it became nearly effortless.

“Stay here,” Kain began, setting down the Rito on his head. “I’ll be sure to have some more business with you on my way out.”

At that, Kain walked across the rope bridge into the settlement proper, the click-click-click of talons on wood following him. Unfortunately, it seemed that the red-feathered Rito did not know what was best for him. Kain saw as he flew overhead, clearly going to report the incident to someone else. Perhaps it would mean that there would be someone even more fun to toy with, however. Kain continued walking, beginning to ascend the stairs. Rito all around gawked at him—whether it was the nudity, his sheer size, the iron prosthetic over his beak, or merely the sight of a stranger, Kain couldn’t tell—and he had some fun with them. A woman had her fledgling placed on her head, a man was dumped into a barrel of water, and Kain made sure to flip over the table of butter in the general store. That was when a gray-feathered Rito approached him, bearing a sword. It was well-made, certainly; it seemed that Rito steel had gotten better in the intervening few centuries. There was also the matter of the fact that the approaching Rito’s entire left wing was without feathers, save for a few scant patches.

“Stop right there!” the approaching Rito demanded. “You’re under arrest!”

Kain chuckled. “Cute,” he began, before walking up to the gray-feathered Rito. He had perhaps a foot of height on him. At that, Kain knocked him to the ground, bending over. “You’re quite fun. I imagine I’ll keep you.”

Kain licked at the gray-feathered Rito’s face. Looking down at the rest of the body, the first thing that Kain noticed was his tesra. It seemed that he was First Warrior of this settlement. This would be quite interesting. Looking further down, it also seemed that the First Warrior had quite the nice ass. Kain gave it a good slap, as he should, before more guards arrived with spears. Perhaps the most fun thing to do now would be to simply leave the fisherman in charge of dealing with this situation. Kain ejected from the body, coming out in an ooze of Gloom that slowly dripped downwards before finding its way north. He found himself in contact with his fellow spirits once more. Unfortunately, without a Stalrito in the area, he would have no way of keeping an eye on how well the fisherman did at managing the situation. Kain had had his fun, however, and that was what was important.
