Mr. Mistoffelees, ever the nervous cat, constantly worried about being ambushed when he went out.
Hell, he worried about being attacked when he stayed in.
Because of this, he'd often self-sabotage, killing his opportunities for connection out of fear of getting hurt.
Victoria was the first person he didn't feel nervous around, really.
