Still in Love still runs even until today.
Ashlock was passing by the tracks while going towards her office when she caught sight of her trainee jogging. She's on dirt somehow, because her running friend today is that of Shinko Windy. A weird duo, but Ashlock wouldn't question it as long as Still in Love is happy.
Casting a glance to her watch, Ashlock decides she still has plenty of time before Tazuna berate her for being late, and steps into the tracks.
Shinko Windy notices her first. The girl slows her pace and waves at Ashlock, causing Still in Love to pause as well and turns her gaze, beaming when she finds her trainer.
"Sensei!"
The two swerve away from their respective lanes to approach Ashlock. The seasoned trainer nods and waves.
"You girls are early. Lovely morning to run, eh?"
Shinko Windy cackles. "Very very lovely! The sun is warm!"
Still in Love smiles at her friend's words. She then bows at Ashlock, her smile never leaving her lips. "Good morning, sensei. It's been a while. Were you going to the tracks or back to the office as usual?"
With a chuckle, Ashlock crosses her arms. "It's been a while indeed, Still. Nah, just to the office as usual. I saw you both running so I stop by."
Still in Love responds with a small laughter. Ashlock regards her trainee, finding no noticeable difference than when the last time they met, and sighs.
It's been about a month since Still in Love retired from the racing scene. After her magnificent wins during two years ago's triple tiara series, she suffered from mental issues, and while her medication was going smoothly, she could never win any other graded races after that. She then decided to retire after trying out only three graded races this year, and as her trainer, Ashlock only ever supported her through the whole ordeal.
At the very least, Still in Love doesn't come to hate running. Ashlock knows her trainee doesn't really like to run. She was passionate about winning, not running by itself, after meeting Mejiro Ramonu and Admire Groove at the start of her career. The former had taunted Stil in Love to win the tiaras just like she was before, while the latter was.. somewhat complicated.
Hostile would've been the first word Ashlock could think of to describe Admire Groove's earliest attitude towards Still in Love. A broody one, that girl, pushing everyone including her own trainer away to reach her own heights. She seemed to dislike Still in Love because they were the two favourites to win the triple tiaras.
But even at that time, Still in Love had talked about her like she was in love, constantly glazing the blue-maned girl as this 'ideal' she wanted to surpass. Her first two wins against Admire Groove had brought Still in Love into a state of euphoria. Her Rose Stakes defeat got her a bit rattled, which caused her to win with only a small margin against Admire Groove in Shuka Sho, but her QEII Cup defeat had outright sent her into a downward spiral.
Still in Love had to take a long rest following the events. She went in and out of the hospital multiple times in the span of six months. When she was stable enough, she repeatedly expressed her regret for not being able to race more, to which Ashlock replied that her health was the most important thing to care about. As her trainer, Ashlock stood by her side, patiently accompanying her trainee towards a full recovery.
And, for some reason, Admire Groove was also there.
She didn't talk much to Ashlock, but she would show up to accompany Still in Love when Ashlock had other things to attend. She'd brought some sweets Still in Love craved during her hospital stay—bringing some food for Ashlock as well. Some mornings, Ashlock would arrive at the hospital to find Admire Groove sleeping on the couch, despite Still in Love being in her stable period so she didn't need constant supervision. Once Still in Love returned to Tracen, Admire Groove never left her side during lunchtime, usually reading on her phone as she waited for Still in Love to finish her food.
The attention and support allowed Still in Love to recover much faster than expected, and she returned to race in a few more graded races last year. She also had a rematch with Admire Groove for another QEII Cup, which she, again, fantastically lost, but now she accepted the defeat with grace and congratulated Admire Groove properly.
Her health still improves and declines like a pendulum, though, so they opted to take this year leisurely, until Still in Love finally decided to retire and focus on herself.
Alas, after retirement, Ashlock often catches Still in Love making her way to the tracks, jogging with whoever available that day. Sometimes she's on turf, sometimes she's on dirt, and sometimes she just watches the other girls running. Ashlock never joined her until today, because usually Still in Love would appear on the tracks when she's already at the office.
"—is sensei coming?"
A call from Shinko Windy shakes Ashlock from her thoughts. She blinks, realizing that she's been silent for too long while the two umamusume are conversing, and coughs to mask her surprise.
"Come again, Windy?"
The wolf-like umamusume tilts her head, ears twitching. "To the party! You know—the year-end party for Thanksgiving! Is sensei coming?"
Ah, Ashlock remembers. Tracen Academy always holds an annual Thanksgiving party by the end of November. Aside from celebrating the holiday, it's also usually used as a 'good luck and farewell' party for the umamusume who retire that year. Farewell for the ones who are already retired, and good luck for the ones who'd end their career in December races. While there's also a Christmas event, it's not as festive as the thanksgiving party, because many of the girls prefer to stay with their family for Christmas and new year.
"Of course, why wouldn't I come?"
Shinko Windy snorts and elbows Still in Love by her waist. "See! Even sensei is coming! You can't not come, Still-chan! You are the main event!"
The comment got Still in Love to wince. She laughs nervously and rubs the back of her neck. "W-well.. you see, this year's party has a theme.."
"A theme?"
"Why, yes, sensei.." Still in Love blushes before continuing. "It's a dance party.. with a 'date'. I, uh.. don't have a date to come with."
Windy cuts before Ashlock could reply. "It doesn't have to be a real date! I'm coming with Biko-chan! As long as we can eat!"
Ashlock raises an eyebrow. Still in Love furrows her brows. They share a glance, knowing how disastrous a combination of Biko Pegasus and Shinko Windy would turn into.
"With Biko, huh? Why not go with Still instead, Windy-chan?"
Shinko Windy quickly shakes her head. "But she asked me to, and I already promised to go with Biko-chan!"
Chuckling, Ashlock turns to her trainee. "Damn, got rejected in seconds. I can find you a 'date', Still, if that's what you want."
Still in Love's face contorts into a grimace. "Please don't, sensei. That's embarrassing."
"Alright, alright. I won't," says Ashlock, but she can't help to smile at an idea appearing in her mind. After all, she's also an umamusume. Having retired for decades and becoming a trainer will never make her forget how her heart used to beat for her 'rival'. The least Ashlock can do is to try.
She notices Still in Love throwing a suspicious look at her. She ignores her trainee, glancing at her watch and chuckles.
"Well, I guess I have to go. Have fun running today, Still, Windy."
"Okay, sensei!"
"See you, sensei."
Ashlock waves at the two as she resumes her walk towards her office. Her left ear flicks, listening to the trots of Shinko Windy and Still in Love returning to the tracks.
She hopes Reira comes to the office today.

"You have a date for the party already?"
Admire Groove looks up from her spot at the bench press, finding Reira Seiryuu approaching her. It's rare for her trainer to join her in her upper-body strength practice session. The brown-haired human usually let the gym PT to coach Admire Groove instead, as she, by her own words, aren't quite well-versed in strength training.
Making sure her weights are placed securely, Admire Groove asks, "What party?"
Reira takes a seat beside her. "The thanksgiving one. You have a date already?"
Admire Groove scoffs. "I won't come. QEII Cup is at November 13th and my retirement in December 18th. The party will be held in November 24th. Too close with both."
"It's just the thanksgiving party. With food. And a dance. It's not like you'd be required to do 100 cartwheels at it."
Scooting out from the bench press equipment, Admire Groove watches her trainer closely. Reira's regular solemn, neutral expression doesn't allow many to peek into her thoughts, but Reira had been her trainer for four years already. Admire Groove had learned to spot any slight difference in her trainer's features to know what she's thinking.
The light in her eyes looks a bit too bright. Reira has an idea that makes herself happy. Admire Groove shivers as she wonders what might be it.
"Again, I won't come. Even if I'd like to, I don't have a date."
"Oh," Reira brightens up, "Ashlock-sensei told me Still also hasn't gotten a date."
See?
"I told you I won't come." Admire Groove growls. "She can find another date."
There's a twinge of pain in her chest that disappears as quickly as it appeared. With another irritated growl, Admire Groove saunters away, approaching the static bike. Her tail instinctively swats in annoyance when she hears Reira following her.
"But it would be such a waste if you don't come." Reira tries again after Admire Groove mounts the bike. "You are retiring too. It's a farewell party for yourself as well. Just for a day, at least you can enjoy the festivities before we train for Hanshin Mare. Don't push yourself too hard, Aruv. Enjoy your time in Tracen while it lasts."
Admire Groove sighs. She should've known that her trainer is very adamant when she wants her to do something. It's a bit annoying sometimes, especially when Admire Groove isn't in the same wavelength as her.
Though, she is right in a way. Admire Groove is also retiring this year. Her knees have had on and off flares after last year's QEII Cup, causing her performance to sink this year. Her doctor had advised her against running for another year, and so she decided to end her career by running in one last QEII Cup and Hanshin Mare Stakes. Definitely not as prestigious as an Arima Kinen or Japan Cup retirement, unlike some of her peers, but she'd rather preserve her own legs than forcing them to do more than they can handle.
The thanksgiving party is always mostly directed for the retiring umamusume in each year. She also had received a letter, usually from the student council to acknowledge her retirement, but Admire Groove wasn't even bothered to open it. She'd rather spend her time training for her final race.
"It's just for one day."
Admire Groove turns to look at her trainer. Reira had mounted the bike adjacent to her, pedalling in a much leisure pace.
"For a once in a lifetime occasion, Aruv! You don't retire every year. You'd be a guest of honour!"
Admire Groove frowns. That is exactly why she doesn't want to go. Too much spotlight in a place that is not a race, and considering the theme, the Student Council ought to make her do something ridiculous as a main event. Then again, aside from her and Still in Love, there are also Tap Dance City, Cesario, Hishi Miracle, and Zenno Rob Roy to retire this year. Hishi Miracle and Rob Roy are quite shy, so they probably won't do much, and Cesario is still recovering for her injury. But Tap will for sure do something even more ridiculous to commemorate her retirement. Admire Groove won't receive the brightest spotlight in the party.
"Ugh, fine." Admire Groove relents. She supposes she can spare a day or two before returning to her training. "I'll come. But what is this about Still in Love's date?"
Reira smiles. "Ashlock-sensei said Still hasn't found any dates for the party. Why don't you go together?"
Admire Groove almost offers Neo Universe, but realizes that the pragmatic blonde must've gone with Rob Roy, and swallows back her question.
"Why do you think it's a good idea for me to go with Still?"
Reira hums and stops pedalling. "Well.. you two were quite prominent rivals during the tiara series, right? And she just retired last month. Think of it as a send-off for your rival—a thank you and a farewell for the three years you spent together. I think she deserves that much. Even if you both didn't really race together much after the tiaras."
Admire Groove presses her lips into a thin line. Of course they didn't race much anymore. She saw Still in Love in a muted blue gown more often than her tantalizing red silks for the past two years. Perhaps it was what first sparked the constant throb in her chest—the sudden change of the beautiful mare running in front of her into a fragile girl resting on the hospital ward. The presence who once haunted her became a presence who sought her out for comfort.
And yet, no matter how different current Still in Love is with the Still in Love who won the triple tiara, she stays the same in Admire Groove's eyes. Still in Love is the only umamusume she once desperately wanted to surpass. After her, no one else ever came close to spark the same thrill in her heart. Even if Still in Love was much more subdued during last year's QEII Cup, Admire Groove felt that familiar lust to win returned to her—just like all their previous year's match. The desire to win, to prove to Still in Love that she can beat her in a race.
So.. despite everything, Still in Love truly was, and is, her only true rival.
She really does deserve a send-off and gratitude from Admire Groove.
"I'll talk to her later." Admire Groove finally says. "Just in case she has another date ready."
Reira beams at her. "Good decision. Let me know if you need someone to accompany you shopping."
"Shopping for?"
"For dresses? Or suits. Whichever strike your fancy."
"I don't—"
"I'll pay."
Admire Groove sighs. Perhaps it would be best to just entertain whatever Reira has in mind.
"Deal."
.
.
.
Admire Groove finds Still in Love at her usual spot in the cafeteria. Alone at a corner, slowly eating her share of lunch with no one else paying attention to her. Admire Groove doesn't need to ask for permission or announce her arrival to sit beside her. Still in Love only looks up from her food, smiling when she finds her usual lunchmate, and greets.
"Good afternoon, Aruvu-san."
"Good afternoon."
After that, no one continues talking. Admire Groove finishes her meal and opens an e-book in her phone, waiting for Still in Love as she eats her share. Still in Love eats in an absurdly slow pace, often spending the entire break just to have her lunch. She once explained that she loves to enjoy the texture of the food. Admire Groove just lets her, not bothered with it, and even come to use the downtime to read novels.
A clang of metal utensils meeting the plate catches Admire Groove's attention.
"I'm done."
Still in Love's small smile is answered with a curt nod.
"We still have time until the next period. Does Aruvu-san have something else to do?"
"No." Admire Groove shakes her head. "Say, Still. Are you going to the thanksgiving party?"
That gets Still in Love to pause. She stares at Admire Groove, confusion in her eyes, before something apparently dawns at her and her face turns into something akin to betrayal.
Admire Groove raises an eyebrow. "Well?"
"Did—" Still in Love inhales, "—did Ashlock-sensei tell you to ask me?"
So, something was definitely discussed between their two trainers. Admire Groove will have to confront Reira for this later. But something tells her her pride would be wounded if Still in Love knows her question didn't come from herself, so Admire Groove continues on.
"Not really. I've been thinking of asking you to go with me, but I thought you'd go with Uni. Then Ashlock-sensei told Reira that you're still alone."
The look of betrayal dissipates from Still in Love's face, changing into a slight blush. She casts her gaze down before nodding.
"Y-yes. Uni-chan had promised to go with Rob Roy. I.. wasn't planning to go, actually. But if Aruvu-san goes, then.."
As Still in Love trails off, Admire Groove nods. "Alright, then. Would you like to go with me, Still?"
Still in Love blushes harder before nodding. "I.. I'd love to, Aruvu-san."
It should be illegal how cute Still in Love looks like when she's flustered. Admire Groove closes her eyes, willing herself not to fumble her words, and asks, "Would you prefer me to wear a suit or a dress for the occasion?"
"..sorry?"
"Yeah, like, it's a 'date'." She repeats while making quotation gestures. "What would you rather see me wear?"
If it's possible, Still in Love's cheeks just become redder. "Um… I think anything would look good for you, Aruvu-san…"
Admire Groove feels heat creeping up her cheeks as well. She coughs, masking her nervousness. This is going nowhere. She should be more forward.
"I know. I think it's more proper if we wear matching attires, though. What are you going to wear?"
"M-me?"
When Admire Groove raises another eyebrow, Still in Love avoids her gaze and mutters. "I think I'd go with a dress…"
"Then I'll find a suit to wear."
"Uhm.. okay."
Right on time, the bell rings to mark the end of the lunch break. Admire Groove puts her phone in her pocket and picks up her used plates. She returns the plates to the kitchen, Still in Love following closely behind her, then turns towards the cafeteria exit. Before she could go far, though, Still in Love calls.
"Aruvu-san?"
"Yes?"
She finds Still in Love fiddling with her fingers by the doorway. The shorter mare is blushing madly, but she looks up to Admire Groove and gives her a wide smile.
"Thank you for considering me as your date for the party, Aruvu-san."
Admire Groove clears her throat. "Yeah, uh. I won't consider anyone else, after all."
Still in Love widens her eyes. Admire Groove feels her face becoming unreasonably warm.
"Anyway.. I'll see you tomorrow."
She swiftly walks away, unwilling to see more of a flustered Still in Love—knowing she herself is having a horrible blush. She hears Still in Love bidding her goodbye as she takes a turn towards the stairs. Once she believes she's out of Still in Love's view, she groans, placing a palm over her face to try to cool down.
And she fails. Miserably.
.
.
.
Admire Groove finished third in her last QEII Cup. It was a good enough result for her, considering how she can barely walk straight after the race. She slipped right after the last corner, causing her to not being able to give her best during her last spurt. She can't catch up to the frontrunner, and Sweep Tosho overtook them both in the last 300 meters.
Her left knee immediately flared, and she, begrudgingly, had to take a week-long rest before her doctor allowed her to train again. It was thankfully not bad enough to hinder her daily life, and so she was able to continue being active around the academy without needing crutches.
Today is the last day of her advised rest period. She was planning to use this day to start jogging around the tracks, but her trainer had a different idea.
And so, here Admire Groove is, inside a boutique with her arms crossed, waiting for Reira who is browsing at the suits.
"Are you not buying something?" Her trainer asks after the fifth sigh she lets out. That gets Admire Groove to raise an eyebrow.
"I thought you were choosing for me?"
Reira stops, frowning slightly. "I'm going to the party with a date as well, you know. Not everything I do is for you."
Admire Groove has to hold herself not to strangle her trainer. "Okay, fine."
With that, she moves from her spot, looking around the boutique, taking a few pieces of garments that catch her attention. She frowns at price tag before shaking her head. Reira had promised to buy attires for her. It was by her own volition to bring Admire Groove to an expensive boutique. If her wallet burns by the end of their shopping trip, it would be entirely her own fault.
"So.." Reira slides to her side when she's about to bring her picks to the changing room. "Are you really coming with Still in Love?"
"Yes. Why?"
Reira shrugs. "Nothing. Will you fetch her or will you just meet her at the venue?"
"She said she'll go to the venue with Ashlock-sensei," says Admire Groove. "I'll go on my own. Unless you want to go with me?"
"Is it okay if I don't?"
"Fetching your date?"
"Correct."
"Yea, it's fine."
Reira nods in satisfaction before leaving. Admire Groove takes her sweet time to try on her chosen outfits, mixing and matching each piece until she comes across a combination that satisfies her. After fixing her own clothes, Admire Groove gives the apparels to the attendee and waits for them to be packed.
The two of them exit the boutique each with a bag in hand. Reira then asks Admire Groove to accompany her some more, insisting that it's better for her knees to walk in normal pace for a long time before jogging in tracks. At this point, Admire Groove just isn't bothered to challenge her trainer, and so just follows along as the brunette enters various stores.
Once Reira is satisfied, night has fallen, and Admire Groove already brings five other shopping bags that don't belong to her. The outfit-shopping had turned into a monthly restock for Reira's apartment. While the brunette didn't ask for help, Admire Groove cannot, for the love of Goddess, see her trainer hauling all her shopping bags on her own, so she took some of Reira's bags for herself.
"Thank you for accompanying me today, Aruv," says the trainer, breathless, after they load her groceries into the trunk of her car. "Wanna go home with me?"
Admire Groove shakes her head. "No need. I still want to sightsee." Also, Tracen Academy is not too far away from here. She supposes she should try a slow jog on her way back before returning to the tracks tomorrow.
"Alright then, I'll see you tomorrow." Reira pats her trainee's shoulder before humming. "Let's take it easy for the next few days. A few small jogs and we'll go for swimming sessions to make sure your knees are okay. How about it?"
"I can agree to that."
Reira smiles at her. With one last pat, the brunette enters her car and drives away. Admire Groove waits until Reira's car disappears into a corner before turning on her heels.
Something caught her eyes back when she was strolling with Reira. But she didn't want to burden her trainer with more spendings, so she decided to return to the shop once Reira went home.
The shine and glitter of jewelleries cause Admire Groove to hold her breath. No matter how many years had passed, Admire Groove still can't get used to luxury. Her previous life in the orphanage didn't allow her to enjoy many things that weren't given to her by her caretakers. In the rare time where she got money for herself, she only ever spent a little for snacks, holding herself from buying toys or interesting books because she wanted to save up to buy her own racing silks.
Even after she moved out to Tracen and received their scholarship, and even after she won graded races and got her own prize money, that mentality persists. As she stands in front of a jewellery store, Admire Groove grips her wallet tightly, reminding herself that she is allowed to splurge a little.
It never hurts to make herself a bit more presentable, no? Also, if she at least got into the podium at Hanshin Mare, the prize money would cover far more than her purchase today.
Steeling her resolve, Admire Groove takes a deep breath and steps into the store.
.
.
.
The event comes too quickly for Still in Love's liking. Despite sitting with Admire Groove every lunch break, and her coming to spectate Admire Groove's last QEII Cup match live, they never actually talked about the party. The only time they ever talked about it was at the first time Admire Groove asked Still in Love to come with her. Frankly, the memory of that invitation in itself already causes Still in Love to blush every time it returns to her mind, so she believes it's best Admire Groove never bring up the topic during their lunches.
But being flustered by only the invitation means Still in Love gets even more nervous by the actual party. She already prepared a dress—one she bought as per her mother's suggestion—but she herself is not ready to wear the dress to the party.
What if it's too much for her? What if it doesn't look good on her? What if it doesn't complement Aruvu-san's suits? What if Aruvu-san doesn't like the dress?
"What if you just keep quiet for a bit and let me retouch your make up?"
Still in Love spares a small laughter at the irritated sentence spoken by her trainer. In front of her, Ashlock stands, a compact powder in one hand and a puff in the other, a slight frown in her face. Yet, the older stallion's serene grey eyes are alight with mirth, and there's an unmistakable twitch at the edge of her lips.
Again, Still in Love laughs. "I'm sorry, dad."
"What was that?" Ashlock snorts, carefully tapping the puff on Still in Love's cheeks. "There. Be careful not to wipe your hand on your face or it'll smudge."
Still in Love smiles. "I'll keep that in mind. Thank you, sensei."
Ashlock nods and throws the compact powder into her purse. She crosses her arms, eyes scanning Still in Love from head to toe, then chuckles and rubs the younger mare on the shoulder. "You are absolutely beautiful. Don't worry too much and just enjoy your time with your friends, okay?"
As Still in Love opens her mouth to answer, Ashlock quickly adds, "Also—If Aruv doesn't appreciate you or makes you uncomfortable, just call me and I'll kick her out."
Still in Love can't help another giggle to slip from her lips. "So much for rejecting to be called 'dad'."
"Well, I don't remember ever marrying your mom."
Ashlock lets out a chuckle and pats Still in Love's back, urging her to enter the venue. Still in Love sends one last grateful smile to her trainer as she walks towards the entrance.
In contrast to the usual thanksgiving party, this year's party is being held outside of Tracen grounds. The student council said it's because there have been many students who achieved big this year alone, and so they managed to gather much more funds for events. If this party goes smoothly, they aim to make the thanksgiving party to be held in venues outside of Tracen for the years to come. Makes for a much more formal, yet proper farewell party.
As per usual, Still in Love doesn't get too much attention. She easily slips between many students, trying to locate people she knows. Neo Universe had left their dorm far earlier, promising Zenno Rob Roy for a trip around the city before coming to the venue, but it doesn't seem like the two had arrived. She finds Cesario sitting at a corner, conversing with Symboli Kris S. Cesario is a good friend of Admire Groove, but Still in Love never really interact with any of the two, so she decides against approaching them and look for someone else.
"Still-chan!"
A familiar voice gets Still in Love's attention. She is immediately greeted with a pair of bright golden eyes and blazing red mane. Loves Only You grins widely as she approaches, while Chrono Genesis calmly waves at Still in Love.
As the two come closer, Still in Love regards their appearance. Loves Only You wears a strapless velvet dress that reaches her knees. Her hair is styled in an updo, leaving her neck and shoulders bare. A gold necklace adorns her neck, topped with a ruby pendant sitting nicely on the center of her chest. At the very bottom, she wears a pair of silver high heels, with pearly straps that hug her calves.
While Chrono Genesis wears a long, off-white dress, covering her down to her ankles. The dress is sleeveless, but a pair of similarly off-white gloves covers her lower arm. Much more modest than Loves Only You, yet the two somehow complements each other.
A smile forming on her lips, Still in Love bows. "Good evening, Rahu-san, Chrono-san."
Loves Only You giggles and clasps both hands in front of her chest. "Oh! You look gorgeous! Why are you alone?"
"Uhm.. Aruvu-san hasn't arrived. We promised to meet at the venue."
"Your date is Aruv?"
At Still in Love's nod, Loves Only You giggles louder.
"Oh, my, I honestly didn't expect Aruv to come."
"Me neither." Chrono Genesis adds. "Isn't Aruvu-san going to race one more time in Hanshin Mare?"
Still in Love confirms. "Yes, she will."
The grey-maned mare rubs her chin with a small crease between her eyebrows. "I saw the Elizabeth Cup last week. Did she get an injury? Her last spurt was so off.."
Loves Only You gasps. "Oh! I saw that too! I thought she was about to fall! Do you know anything about it, Still-chan?"
"Uh, well.." Still in Love trails off. She knows about Admire Groove's knee condition, but she doesn't know if the latter allows her to tell to anyone. After a few seconds of consideration, she decides to only tell them vaguely. "She.. does have an injury in her legs. But don't worry about it, it usually gets better quick."
"Now that you said it.."
Loves Only You and Chrono Genesis continue to talk about Admire Groove, which gradually shifts to other umamusume and other topics in the Academy. The upcoming Christmas event, next year's debut lineup, and so on. Still in Love asks if they are going to debut next year. But both declines, saying they need more time to train, before Loves Only You reveals that Vodka and Daiwa Scarlet are set to debut next year.
A ruckus from the entrance area causes them to stop talking, all interested in the noise. Because they are close enough to the entrance, they manage to listen to the conversation happening. It wasn't too clear, until the shrill voice of Jungle Pocket cuts through the commotion.
"Is that fucking allowed?!"
Someone must've responded with something, because Agnes Tachyon follows through with a calmer, "She's right, Pokke-kun. Fuji Kiseki-san wears something even more outrageous in all of her races. Let's not pretend you didn't show off skin in your racewear as well."
"I beg your pardon?"
The one mentioned appears out of nowhere. Fuji Kiseki needs only to excuse herself one time for everyone to give way to her. She wears an off-shoulder, knee-length purple dress. Modest and simple, unlike her racing attire that somehow got mentioned tonight. Not long after she arrived, the group disperse, leaving only a small number of students by the entrance.
"I honestly always wonder what was in her mind when designing her racing attire." Loves Only You chuckles. "That open window was so risky. Even Ramonu-san had better support."
Chrono Genesis smiles at her roommate. "Maybe she just likes the wind on her chest."
"As I said—Ramonu-san had similar attire but not as bold as Fuji-san. Or maybe something like Aruv and Air Groove-san. They're also good"
The red-maned mare hums then, arms crossed over her chest. "Anyway, is Aruv not here yet? She really does take her time to make her date wait."
Loves Only You casts a glance at Still in Love, who only laughs and rubs her arm. "I-It's fine. Maybe she got caught on something."
"I did get caught at the entrance."
A new voice joining them has the three mares turning, and a collective gasp resounds from them. Admire Groove calmly steps beside Still in Love, knuckles brushing against the shorter mare's hip. She throws a curt smile at Still in Love before apologizing, "I'm sorry I made you wait."
Still in Love, for her part, short-circuits.
Admire Groove—her date for the night, had shown up to the event in an attire that was unimaginable to Still in Love before. From the top, Admire Groove has her hair slicked back, tied in a short ponytail, leaving only her sideburns falling to her chest as usual. Dark-colored mascara accentuates her sharp, heterochromatic eyes. She had discarded her ear covers, opting to wear an intricate golden jewellery on her left ear, adorned with a red ceramic rose at the base of her ear.
Looking further down, Still in Love feels her heart drop to her stomach.
Admire Groove wears a dark blue suit and slacks. Just like what she had promised. But what catches Still in Love's eyes is the lighter blue shirt underneath Admire Groove's suit, unbuttoned from the very top down to half of her stomach, leaving the middle of her chest bare. She also wears an intricate neckpiece with a long string that falls in between her breasts, but Still in Love can't ever pay attention to that with how much skin Admire Groove decides to show off for the night.
A strangled noise resounds from her right. It sounds like Loves Only You, but Still in Love can't make sure considering her own state of shock.
Apparently recognizing Still in Love's disorientation, Admire Groove leans in, taking the other mare's hand in hers. That seems to slightly wake Still in Love.
"You okay?"
Still in Love blushes and looks away. "Y-yes! It's just, Aruvu-san is.. Aruvu-san looks so pretty."
Admire Groove's gaze softens slightly. "So are you. You are breathtaking."
If only she doesn't have a pride to keep, Still in Love would've fallen to the ground.
Someone clears her throat. Just before them, Chrono Genesis smiles, arm linked with Loves Only You who seems to be even more disoriented than Still in Love. The grey-maned mare giggles as she tugs Loves Only You.
"Well, now that Still-chan's date has arrived, maybe we should go, Rahu-chan."
Loves Only You blinks, and gasps, before a blush makes way to her cheeks and she nods rigorously. "Of course! Of course! We'll be on our way! Enjoy the night, Still-chan, Aru-chan!"
The two then departs, but not without Still in Love and Admire Groove witnessing Chrono Genesis's quicker pace and the skittish run from Loves Only You. Admire Groove also notices how the red-maned mare has her ears folded back, but perhaps it's better to not ask and let the two to their own devices.
With a slow sigh, Admire Groove returns her gaze towards her date, and feels her breath, once again, got caught in her throat.
After the fiasco with Jungle Pocket, Admire Groove had to walk around a little to try to locate Still in Love. She had messaged the other mare prior to her arrival, to which Still in Love didn't respond—probably because she was too absorbed in her conversation with Loves Only You and Chrono Genesis. With how mild Still in Love presence is, not many notices her, and so Admire Groove has to search the mare herself.
She found Loves Only You first—the mare's blazing red mane sticking out in between the crowds. She was one of Still in Love's closest friends, and she guessed she might be able to find Still in Love nearby.
She hadn't gotten close enough when some students moved, and she what she saw made her heart skip a few beats.
She saw Still in Love conversing with Loves Only You and Chrono Genesis, with the mare's back facing her. Her orange-ish brown mane was left down, without a veil that usually covered the top of her head. A red ribbon was tied around her left ear. For her outfit, Still in Love wore a dress for the occasion—exactly like how they agreed upon. But the dress she chose had made Admire Groove feeling lightheaded.
It was a red, satin, backless dress. While most of her back was covered by her hair, the open part of her dress reached the gentle slope of her hips, just a few centimetres above her tail. Enough to show the alluring crease of her spine. The dress smoothly fell to her ankles, but one movement and Admire Groove caught sight of the thigh-high slit at the left side of her dress.
Admire Groove had to collect herself before approaching Still in Love. Her blood had definitely gone somewhere away from her head, because she felt somewhat dizzy. It took her at least fifteen seconds before she worked up the courage to walk towards the three mares.
When Still in Love turned to look at her, her heart skipped another few beats. From the front, she found that the red dress had a halter top model, with the red fabric beautifully enveloping Still in Love's slim neck. Her shoulders were bare, milky white skin unblemished, before a pair of dark lacy gloves covered her arm from the elbow downwards.
At least she isn't the only one caught off-guard by their respective other's appearance. She notices the stutter in Still in Love's compliment, before she offers a compliment herself and watches as Still in Love flushes a few shades darker.
She's so adorable. That twinge of pain in Admire Groove's heart returns. But unlike the pain that she felt whenever she saw Still in Love in her hospital gown, it's much more pleasant, with a hint of warmth spreading across her chest.
"Ah—I have something for you."
Still in Love looks up with a questioning glance when Admire Groove reaches back, opening a small waist bag tied to her belt. She takes out a small blue box from the bag—almost making Still in Love faint—and opens it to show a hairpin with sunflower motifs. Admire Groove stares at her silently, as if asking for permission, and only moves once Still in Love nods and lowers her head.
"It's.. not too in line with your clothing theme tonight. But I came across this yesterday and I think.. I think it suits you," Admire Groove says, nervousness creeping in her voice as she clips the hairpin on Still in Love's hair. She clears her throat after she pulls back. Watching Still in Love closely for a short while before she looks away, a subtle redness painting her cheeks.
Touching the newest addition on her hair, Still in Love feels her pulse quicken. The hairpin is firm and cold to the touch. By the look of the packaging, Still in Love believes it must've been at least made from silver. The yellow color looks bright under the light, contrasting the deep red of Still in Love's dress and ear tie.
But there has to be a reason behind the choice of flower. She knows Admire Groove understands flower language—having learned it from her homeroom teacher Air Groove. She must've had something she wants to convey to Still in Love, as she gives the hairpin to her, despite being aware that the hairpin's color stands out between all the red Still in Love wears tonight.
"Thank you, Aruvu-san.. I really love it," Still in Love says with a smile. "You should've told me you'd bring me a gift; I would prepare something for you too."
Admire Groove shakes her head. "No need. It was just.. I felt that it suits you."
The repetition tells Still in Love that Admire Groove truly didn't think much about it. And yet, that makes it even more meaningful for her. For Admire Groove to just came across the hairpin, and immediately thought of her…
Still in Love bites her lips. She lifts a hand to her chest, trying to calm her wildly beating heart.
"So.." Admire Groove coughs again. She avoids Still in Love's gaze as she offers a hand. Only by then does Still in Love realize that Admire Groove also wears a pair of white, cotton gloves.
"Want to look around and find something to eat?"
Despite the rising heat in her face, Still in Love accepts Admire Groove's outstretched hand, and with a giggle, follows the taller mare to wade across the crowds.

The party runs smoothly throughout the night. It opens with a few opening acts of the students singing, followed by the farewell ceremony—if you can even call it that. Symboli Rudolf—once the most esteemed student council president in Tracen history now turned Chairman—gives an appreciative speech towards the retiring umamusume, along with encouragement for the ones who are still actively racing and for the ones who are set to debut the following years.
As there are only six students who retire this year, Symboli Rudolf recites their major wins and congratulates them one by one. She then offers a good luck for Tap Dance City, Zenno Rob Roy, and Admire Groove, as the two stallions will have their last race in Arima Kinen while Admire Groove will end her career in Hanshin Mare Stakes.
Zenno Rob Roy is then called to the podium as a representative of the retiring umamusume. Admire Groove had thought that Tap Dance City would've been the one asked to represent them, but then realizes that Rob Roy is the only one who can deliver a formal yet eloquent speech between all of them.
Then again, it's not Tap Dance City if she doesn't make all attention focused on her.
Just after Rob Roy steps down from the podium, the energetic stallion pounces on the mic, immediately yelling into it.
"Good night, my glorious friends! Umamusume and humans alike! We have gone through such a wonderful time this year alone, and while it saddens me that we have to part ways, I wish to present you a tribute for our beloved academy. As such, I shall present to you, a lovely dance from me and my fellow retiring racers!"
Throughout Tap Dance City's monologue, Admire Groove's neutral expression slowly turns into a deep frown. "What? Fellow retiring racers?"
That gets Still in Love to look at Admire Groove. The taller mare is looking thoroughly confused, so she offers an explanation. "Um.. Tap-san had messaged everyone about it.. that we're going to have a partner dance at the end of the ceremony. Did you not receive the message?"
"What?" Admire Groove repeats, all color gradually draining from her face. "I didn't receive anything."
"Ah, ah, I hear confusion from my dearest Aruv." Tap Dance City suddenly points a finger at her, as if she heard what Admire Groove had asked even if they're located fairly far away. "I have sent you a message, darling, but then I remembered you blocked my number since I asked you out for a date two years ago."
A collective gasp comes from the student body. Still in Love stares at Admire Groove with surprise, confusion, and amusement.
Admire Groove feels the exact moment her soul shatters.
"I also have sent you a letter, but it seems to me that it has not reached you. Perhaps your roommate had chewed it to pieces?"
"Hey! What does that mean?!"
Tap Dance City ignores Shinko Windy's irritated howl and turns to Still in Love. "It is a pity, but my dear Still in Love seems to know about it well. Then, I shall sweep her off her feet and dance to my heart's content!"
"What—huh?"
Before Admire Groove can think further about the situation, a sound of violin echoes from the speakers, denoting the start of a music score. Tap Dance City leaps off the podium. As the six retiring umamusume was called to the front during Symboli Rudolf's speech, it's easy for Tap Dance City to snatch Still in Love, and takes the mare towards the center stage.
Tap Dance City laughs as she leads Still in Love into a dance routine. Still in Love, despite her confusion, follows along, giggling as Tap Dance City manoeuvres them across the floor. At the edge of her vision, she sees the bright blonde mane of Neo Universe, gliding easily with Rob Roy in her arms. She also finds Admire Groove, standing still with the same shocked expression since before, and chuckles before she turns to Tap Dance City.
"Tap-san," she starts, earning a questioning hum from the stallion. "Don't you have another dance partner with you?"
Tap Dance City smirks. She spins Still in Love on her feet, causing the mare to gasp in surprise. After she caught Still in Love in her embrace, she lets her hold loosen for a bit before answering, "I actually went here with Gimlet. But Aruv looked clueless, and I thought it would be a waste to not have both of you dance."
She pauses for a bit, lifting Still in Love's hand and kisses her knuckles. "Moreover, you're the triple tiara winner. You should've been at the centermost of our stage, along with Rob Roy with her triple autumn crown as well."
Still in Love smiles. "But Tap-san also won the Japan Cup. Tap-san deserves the center stage more than me."
Again, Tap Dance City laughs, pulling Still in Love into a full embrace. "You sway me! Though, mayhap I like this better, for both of us to share the center stage!"
Still in Love was about to answer when she sees Tap Dance City's eyes flicker to their side. Just after that, a pair of gloved hands grabs her by the waist, and a body is pressed flush to her back. She feels skin making contact with her own naked back, before threads of cerulean blue tickle her ears, followed by a jaw being pressed to the side of her head.
"Tap-san." Admire Groove speaks; the tail-end of her voice laced with a growl. She slips a hand between Tap Dance City and Still in Love, palm against Still in Love's stomach, before she pulls the mare firmer against herself. "May I take over from now on?"
Tap Dance City lets out a hearty laughter as she swiftly steps away from Still in Love. "Why, this is exactly what I want! Let's dance together, Aruv, Still!"
With that, the stallion departs, her laugh never receding until a maniacal cackle answers her laughter. Waiting for Tap Dance City at the edge of the dance floor is Tanino Gimlet, who catches her into her arms, and the two circle around each other before returning into the dance routine.
Still in Love hears a harsh blow of air as she gets spun around. A hand catches her own and the other snakes around her, causing her to shiver as a gloved hand rests at the small of her back. She looks up to find Admire Groove, a slight scowl tainting her face.
She somehow looks even more beautiful while irritated. Still in Love wishes Admire Groove can't feel her quickening heartbeat from under her thin dress.
"I thought Aruvu-san didn't get the memo to dance?" She tries to ask to elevate her own nervousness.
"I didn't." Admire Groove's reply is clipped. Carefully, she takes a step back, ears flicking around to listen to the music and the dance steps of the other girls around. "I remember this music and the dance, though. This was played during last year's dance competition, wasn't it?"
"Yes, it was."
Admire Groove lifts and extends her hand, allowing Still in Love to spin on her feet. The taller mare pulls her closer again, putting a hand on her waist, and Still in Love raises her own hand to rest on Admire Groove's shoulder.
"Did you really get a dating request from Tap-san?"
Admire Groove groans as she leans forward, firmly holding Still in Love who leans backwards. "From what I heard from Cesario, it was a dare. She played truth and dare with Kris, Gimlet, Shakur and Fine. Had to take someone out for three dates, and somehow they managed to pull my name out of everyone in the academy. So, she started terrorizing me for a date."
Still in Love giggles, imagining how stressful it must've been for Admire Groove. "I take it you didn't go with her?"
"No. I had much more concerning things to attend."
Admire Groove spins Still in Love again, ears twitching when she hears the shorter mare giggle. She bites her lips for a split second before Still in Love returns to face her. Still in Love's question reminds her of the events that transpired at the same time as Tap Dance City's dating request. Her eyes stray towards the other mare's arms, covered with lace gloves, knowing just what lays underneath.
Another sigh escapes her. She manages to keep her expression neutral as Still in Love nudges her for a spin, letting go of her thoughts and let herself be swayed by the melody.
The music picks up pace, and Admire Groove repeats the dance steps from her memory. Still in Love apparently remembers how the dance proceeds as well, and moves in accordance to Admire Groove. At the times where their hands connect, the two would let the touch linger, white cotton and black lace brushing lightly against each other before they pull their hands to themselves.
Still in Love falls back into Admire Groove's arms as the music slows into an intimate rhythm. She puts both hands on the taller mare's shoulders after a succession of spins, accidentally slipping under her shirt and lands on Admire Groove's naked chest.
With a gasp, Still in Love retracts her hand, only for Admire Groove to catch her wrist.
"It's fine," she mutters, guiding Still in Love to put a hand behind her neck. She herself leans closer, her palm giving a light pressure to the small of Still in Love's back before sliding up and rests between her shoulder blades.
A shiver goes by her when Still in Love rubs her nape. She watches the other mare closely, revelling in Still in Love's serene expression and the happy smile she wears. She experiments by running her thumb following Still in Love's spine, and the small whimper the mare lets out causes her pride to swell.
Still in Love seems to notice how bold her hands are starting to get, and clears her throat before averting her attention. "M-May I ask something, Aruvu-san?"
Admire Groove blinks, hands stopping just shy above Still in Love's hips. "Of course."
Still in Love worries her lips, visibly contemplating her question before she decides to go through with it. "When I thanked you for asking me to come here, you said you won't consider anyone else for the occasion. Why is that?"
"Why not?" Admire Groove asks back. She rubs her thumb over Still in Love's waist before continuing. "Three years ago, we started our journey together. Raced against each other for so many races. And now, we are to retire together. I believe it is only proper to spend this farewell party with you. My rival—someone who I had spent the entirety of my career with."
"Your rival, huh?"
At Admire Groove's nod, Still in Love sighs.
"I'm truly honoured, Aruvu-san. But ever since the tiaras, I.. I never had a good run anymore. I don't think I deserve to be called your rival.."
"You won the tiaras. I would never be able to win that anymore, because you were there to win it. You are the only one I ever wanted to surpass. I don't care about Tap's Japan Cup. I don't care about Rob Roy's Triple Autumn Crown, or Cesario's America win. I had wanted to win the tiaras, but you robbed it away from me."
Still in Love bites her lips, ears flattening as she listens to Admire Groove's words.
"And—" Admire Groove whispers, "—and when I won against you… I felt such a wondrous pride. It felt good when I won races without you in it, but it will never rival the feeling of winning something when you raced against me. I felt.. fulfilled. Like I was able to prove something to you. Like I was able to prove that I am, too, is as strong as you are."
Feeling the beginning of tears forming in her eyes, Still in Love looks down, unwilling to let her tears fall in the middle of a crowd. She unconsciously tightens her hold on Admire Groove's neck, to which the taller mare responds by hugging her even closer.
"You are my one and only rival, Still. No one will ever be able to take that title away from you."
Tentative fingers touch her knuckles, and Still in Love lets her hand be led away.
"Do you know what does a sunflower mean?"
Still in Love shakes her head. "No. But I guess you have a reason to choose it?"
"I do."
Something warm touches the inner side of her wrist. Soft. A little wet through the lace of her gloves. Still in Love feels as if her world stops when she realizes that Admire Groove is kissing her wrist.
"It means strength and resilience, for the strongest girl to ever grace my life with her presence."
It takes another kiss on her wrist for memory to flood. A memory of two years ago, of the night after the Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Of herself, of Admire Groove, and the ocean of red between them. It was the first time Admire Groove had embraced her. The first time Still in Love found out how warm her embrace was, how safe it felt to be wrapped in Admire Groove's arms. She remembers that she loved how Admire Groove's eyes had looked, so close to her own, azure and magenta glowing even in the darkest of night.
She also remembers how she continued to love those same eyes. Who never stopped looking at her with care. Who returned to its furious gaze, full of determination, when Still in Love challenged her once more in the tracks. The eyes who had seen at her in her best and her worst, yet never once tear her gaze away.
Those odd-eyes, that are now containing something far more tender that they used to be.
A smile forms on her lips. As a singular tear rolls down her cheek, Still in Love reaches up and draws Admire Groove closer. She connects their forehead together, letting their breaths mingle with each other.
"It is my biggest honour to ever be able to race alongside you and become your rival, Aruvu-san."
Admire Groove nods, the edge of her lips twitching to form a small smile. "So am I, Still."
The hand on her back feels firm. There’s a gnawing urge in her chest to just tug Admire Groove slightly down. But her ears are still attuned to the music, and she hears that the song that is leading their dance is coming to an end. After this, the students will be allowed for a free time, mostly to eat and chat with their peers or dance to the following music if they want to.
Gently, Still in Love pushes Admire Groove away, and the taller mare takes the cue to step back.
Tap Dance City's boisterous laughter and monologue once again resound in the venue. Thanking their audience and wishing her fellow retiring umamusume well in their next journey.
Still in Love focuses her attention back to Admire Groove, feeling a fuzzy sensation in her belly at the other mare's softened gaze. Admire Groove's smiles are usually small, somewhat subdued, but tonight she smiles wider than Still in Love ever seen her smiled.
"Wanna go try the chocolate fountain?"
Still in Love beams and laughs.
"I'd never say no to chocolate."

The party is only halfway through when Still in Love excuses herself to go home earlier, already spent from the dance and being swarmed by other students who congratulates her for her retirement. Admire Groove agrees because she wanted have plenty of rest in preparation for her upcoming final race, and immediately offers to drive her back. Still in Love doesn't reject, nor ask from where Admire Groove did get hold of a car. It's a sleek black sedan, somehow fitting her perfectly. She only recognizes who is the car's actual owner when she finds a trainer nametag inside the rack under the dashboard.
"Reira had to do something today, so she gave her car to me." Admire Groove explains when she sees Still in Love staring at Reira's nametag.
Still in Love nods in acknowledgement. She then looks at Admire Groove with a question. "Is Aruvu-san interested to buy a vehicle someday?"
The taller mare hums for a while before answering, "I do like a few bikes."
"Bikes? I always thought Aruvu-san would be the type to like cars better."
"I just feel they're much more agile," she says. "How about you?"
Still in Love giggles. "Mmm.. I'm too scared to drive anything. Maybe I'd keep using the bus and the train."
Admire Groove coughs, hand gripping the steering while a little tighter. "You can.. go with me, if you want."
That gets Still in Love to giggle once more. "That's a promise, then."
The Tracen dormitory is still mostly empty when they arrive. After parking her car, Admire Groove walks Still in Love back to her dorm room despite the latter's urging to return to her own room. The hallways and her room are dark, telling Still in Love that Neo Universe hasn't returned as well.
She swivels on her heels once she reaches her front door.
Her cheeks feel warm even before she starts talking. "I had a wonderful night. Thank you for the.. date.. Aruvu-san."
Admire Groove nods. "I had a great time, too. Thank you for coming with me, Still."
As Admire Groove's voice dissipates into the air, they stand awkwardly still, as if waiting for each other to make a move. It is Admire Groove who breaks the silence by clearing her throat, pushing both her hands into the pockets of her slacks.
"Well, then. I'll see you tomorrow at lunch, Still."
"W-wait."
Admire Groove was about to walk away when Still in Love catches her elbow. She turns, confused, then proceeds to freeze when the smaller mare tiptoes and places a peck right over her mole. Her lips brush against hers, just enough for it to be fleeting, and Still in Love already takes a wide step back when Admire Groove realizes what just happened.
"A good luck charm, for Hanshin Mare."
Even with only the moonlight illuminating them, Admire Groove can see the deep blush colouring Still in Love's cheeks. She looks so cute—her bashful expression will always make Admire Groove's chest constrict in the best way it ever could.
"Prove to me you will win even without me there."
"Even without you there?" Admire Groove cuts, stepping closer to Still in Love. "No. I want you there. Watch me as I prove myself to you."
Still in Love chuckles. There's a stir under her breasts, one that she almost forgets how it feels like. Feeling playful, she takes the strings of Admire Groove's neck piece in her palm, pressing her index finger to the center of Admire Groove's chest. She sees a swirl of desire inside Admire Groove's eyes. She recognizes it. She had seen that emotion in those heterochromatic eyes multiple times before, but never as strong as it is now.
"Prove it. And I'll give you want you want."
Admire Groove bites back a snarl as she answers. "Then watch."
Smiling, Still in Love pushes Admire Groove away while taking a step backwards. The blue-maned mare stares at her for a long while with a familiar glow in her eyes. Then, Admire Groove takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. When she opens them back, that glow had dwindled down, replaced with her usual levelled but tender look.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Still," she says, a hint of a smile in her voice. "Have a nice rest."
"Have a nice rest as well, Aruvu-san."
Admire Groove hears the slam of Still in Love's door once she turns into a corner. As she walks towards her car, her fingers hover over her mole, feeling the skin tingle with the leftover sensation of Still in Love's lips on it.
A good luck charm, huh?
Admire Groove can't help but smirk. She definitely has to win Hanshin Mare Stakes. Not for Still in Love's promised reward, but for her own pride to keep.
For she has to prove, that she, too, is worthy to be called Still in Love's rival.
