Chapter Text

Zam hopped into the car, taking the wheel with his partner in the seat next to him giving him a thumbs up. Zam started up the sirens and began making his way to the crash site. The man next to him picked up the radio and spoke into it with the confidence of someone who had done this for years, telling dispatch they were near and could go to it faster.

Zam kept focused on the road, blocking out the sound of the wind wisping loudly into his ear and the loud sirens that seemed to coat every sense like a blanket when you weren’t prepared for it.

The second the car came to a halt, Zam and his partner- Pangi - hopped out of the car quick as ever and got a grasp on what they could see to have happened. Pangi hesitated for half a second when he saw the state of the Tan car. It was in ruin. Pangi saw the dark smoke seeping out of gaps in the mangled wreckage of what used to be a passenger door.

Zam brought him back to reality and out of his inspection by giving him a prompt shove on the back and said a few words, giving Pangi another reason to move (As if he didn’t already have enough).

“Pang, can you handle crowd control while I go talk to witnesses and the Durango lady. ”

Zam sounded unenthusiastic about having to talk to the woman who- even from a distance- acted like everything was about her, waving her hands around to no one as she spoke with someone on the phone. But he knew as much as anyone else on the field he needed to get statements on what all happened.

Zam’s tone normally would’ve made Pangi chuckle if it were any other day and they were hanging out with Derapchu or anyone else, but laughing wasn’t right at this time. The time to laugh was after this was all over and everyone involved went home safe and alive, laughing back at the moment.

Pangi nodded and headed to the Tan car while Zam headed over to the side where a few civilians stood looking rather worried. Zam questioned many, but their stories were all the same or very similar. Especially in the detail that the lady in the Maroon car had run the red light. He made a mental note of it.

Now he stood in front of the lady, waiting to see if she’d get off the call and acknowledge him so he could get her side of the story.

“Ma’am I need to speak with you about what happened here.”

But to his dismay, she only waved him off as if it were all some minor inconvenience and went straight back to blabbering on the phone. He plucked the phone from her hand and spoke to the person on the other side, not listening to whatever the person on the phone might have to say.

“Sorry, but this is an officer and she’s going to have to call you back”

He put it simply before hanging up and returning the phone to her. Hoping now that she would speak to him and at least answer the questions he had,

“Ma’am, can you tell me what exactly happened?”

He hoped for any kind of breif summary he could get, but his hopes were burnt and crushed with her sarcastic and uninterested tone speaking as if the -probably traumatic- experience wouldn’t  be impactful for the other people in the car. All she spoke of was hope because of this she would be late to work, how now she wouldn’t get her lunch break, and how she needed to get to Meier.

Zam held in any rude backlash he could’ve given and instead asked the next question.

“Were you injured at all?”

“No, I already told the EMT that,”

Her impatient attitude was somehow feeling more obnoxious with each word she spoke. Zam rubbed his forehead with a sigh.

“Alright. Everyone I’ve spoken to around here said you had the red light. Can you tell me why you failed to stop for it?”

Her eyes widened at the accusation as if what he said was an absurd statement. Zam let his breath out slow. He adjusted his stance to put weight on his left leg.

“Due to your failure to stop at the light and further prevent this wreck, I’m going to need to write you a ticket.”

She complained, but thankfully accepted the ticket. Zam walked away from her to return to the main section of the site. When he looked around for Pangi, he noticed there were a lot fewer people standing around the corners of the intersection than there originally had been. Zam ran his fingers through his hair when a hand landed on his shoulder.

“There you are Zam’bam!”

Pangi said with a grin as Zam turned to face him.

“Oh, hey Pangi. I see you got some of the crowd to disperse, great job.”

He said before putting a hand on his hip and giving a playful nudge into Pangi’s arm with his elbow. Pangi stretched his arms while he spoke

“Thanks Zam, I can’t wait for our shifts to be over, yeah?”

Zam nodded in agreement, turning his head to look towards the sun for a few seconds before he returned his gaze to the other man.

“By the way, Derap was wondering if you wanted to come to this new cafe over by Evergreen after work with us.”

“Of course dude! I love hanging out with you guys.”

“Alright, how does 6:30 sound?”

“Sounds perfect.”
