Work Text:
Marlene and Dorcas were half-sitting, half-laying on the slanted roof of someone's house, staring out at Muggle London. It would've been relaxing if they weren't constantly scanning for any signs of a battle.
For a moment Dorcas turned her attention instead to her partner next to her. They were dressed in a tank top and jeans, had a band-aid on their cheek — which they didn't even need, the injury had been healed with magic, but they thought it looked cool — and their ginger roots were visible in their otherwise bleach-blonde pixie cut. Despite the low effort — or maybe because of it, that was their signature style, really — Dorcas thought Marlene looked so incredibly handsome. Radiant in the starlight.
"I love you, Marls."
Marlene looked over and smiled. "Love you too, Cas. What makes you say that?"
"I don't know, I just... With everything going on, I need to make sure you know that. Just in case something happens."
"Nothing's going to 'happen,' Cas. We'll be fine."
"Yeah, but... I just- I worry sometimes, you know? So many people have died already. Every time we get into a duel, or you're just fifteen minutes late to an order meeting, I'm terrified I'm going to lose you too. You're practically the only person I've got left, and you're, like, my light in the darkness or- or something poetic like that." She allowed herself a small laugh at that. "And I really have no idea what I'd do without you. Probably, like, go avenge you and then AK myself so I can join you."
"And I thought I was the rambler in the relationship," Marlene teased, weakly shoving her shoulder, but Dorcas could see the uncertainty in their smile, and hear it in their voice.
"Really, though. I'm scared too," they admitted. "The first time I met you, I had no idea you'd mean this much."
"Yeah, right. You were obsessed with me the moment you first saw me." Dorcas grinned at them.
"Psh. Was not."
"Yes you were!"
"Shut up, you asshole!"
Dorcas laughed at them as they practically tackled her, pinning her against the roof with their body.
Their breathing evened out as the excitement wore off, and Dorcas gently held her partner's cheeks as they stared down at her.
"Don't you ever leave me."
They grinned. "As if you could get rid of me that easily." Then their smile softened as they spoke again. "I love you, Dorcas Meadowes."
"And I love you, Marlene McKinnon."
And then there was shouting, and flashes of light from a few blocks away. The bubble burst, and the moment was gone.
It was time to re-enter the war.
