Work Text:
Chalk dust swirls in the late autumn sunlight, slicing through Horseland’s central barn aisle—leftover evidence from Will’s riding lesson diagrams. The scent of hay and antiseptic hangs thick, undercut by the restless stamp of hooves. Two pure-white foals stand trembling in a freshly bedded stall, their coats like untouched snow under the overhead lamps. They arrived at dawn, temporary refugees while their mother recovers from colic surgery. Already, they’ve magnetized the kids. Sarah kneels at the stall door, her silver hoops glinting as she extends an apple slice.
"Easy now, little one," she murmurs.
Behind her, Alma adjusts her St. Martin medallion, reciting foal-care facts from a horse forum. Bailey leans against the wood, grinning as a foal nibbles his sleeve. Scarlet watches from her stall, her black coat absorbing the shadows. Her dark eyes soften at the foals’ wobbly legs—memory flashes of her own early days.
She nickers, low and reassuring. "It's safe here."
But Calypso stamps a hind hoof, her spotted blanket rippling. "Dem babies gettin' all da sugar cubes," she grumbles to Button, her Caribbean lilt sharp.
The Trakehner flicks her green-streaked mane. "Sí, Alma hasn’t brushed me once today."
Nearby, Aztec pins his ears. Bailey’s been cooing at the foals for twenty minutes—twenty minutes where his withers went unscratched.
The Mustang’s dark blue tail lashes. "They’re infants. Can’t even trot straight."
"You’re just jealous," Scarlet states, her voice regal and calm. She noses her water bucket, then lifts her head higher. "They need kindness."
Chloe and Zoey flutter at Bailey’s periphery like determined moths. Chloe smooths her lavender headband. "Bailey, shouldn’t Chili get a turn in the outdoor ring? He’s been perfect today."
"Pepper’s gait is flawless in this light," Zoey counters, flipping her red hair.
Bailey ignores them, chuckling as a foal sneezes into his palm. Aztec snorts. Chaos ignites when Molly tries to “help”—her pink vest smudged with dirt as she wobbles under a too-heavy hay bale. It tumbles, scattering golden stalks. Sunburst startles, his palomino coat flashing like a coin.
Pepper shrieks, "Watch it, bruja!" while Chili sidesteps, nearly crushing Zoey’s boot.
"Whoa!" Will’s command cuts through the noise. Jimber steps forward beside him, the Quarter Horse’s star symbol steady as a compass rose. "Molly, small loads. Nani, help her."
Nani nods, her Cherokee jacket sleeves pushed up, and quietly gathers hay. Scarlet watches Sarah soothe the trembling foals, her girl’s hands gentle on their necks. The Arabian mare exhales—a warm cloud in the crisp air. Let Calypso sulk. Let Aztec glower. These little ones? They’re sunlight on fresh snow. Fragile. Needing shelter. She nudges her stall door, the red crown on her halter gleaming. Loyalty isn’t just for riders.
