Kenma Kozume/Reader

Notes:

HI! I've been stewing on the few chapters I've written for a while.
and i've finally built the confidence to finally post some of them whilst I start on the next few. This is my first somewhat good fic so it might still not be good as I don't exactly write stuff like this often, also meaning chapters might be short. I am trying to work on making them more lengthy.

I myself suffer from severe writers block and burnout often so updates might be consistently slow, sorry about that.

If there's grammar mistakes or timeline or fact mistakes please, let me know! I have tried to keep the characters close to canon but I am prone to mischaracterisation like anyone else, I am only human! ALSO, I tried to make the reader use they/them pronouns with no clear gendered description but I'm usually used to writing fem readers so sorry again if I slip up anywhere.

Okay! Yap session over! Thankyou for clicking on this fic, I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Kenma Kozume didn’t have many close friends. In fact he would only say he has two, Kuroo Tetsurou and Hinata Shoyo. Though that's not to say he wasn’t close with the rest of the volleyball team; they just weren’t the same. Sure they were nice, friendly people, but they didn’t understand him like Kuroo did and they weren’t as thought provoking as Shoyo. However, he’d still never go out of his way to make more friends, simply thinking he didn’t need more, that meant talking and going out of his way to get to know more people all of which required much more effort than necessary.

That's how it’d always been, the only reason he’d ended up talking to people was by them talking to him, this same idea unfortunately extended to extracurriculars, much to his dismay.

Volleyball was…okay, he supposed. The team was nice and when he played against people like Shoyo it was better, he had to think more than in a usual game but that all led to him getting tired and sweaty from playing. It’d be so much better if he were at home on a new game or something. Then he wouldn’t have to get all worn out and could simply relax without the pressure of communicating.

Snap Snap

Kuroo clicked his fingers in front of Kenma’s face, hand on his hip as he looked down with an amused expression.

“Practice finished 5 minutes ago y’know..get out of that mind of yours.”

The tall boy grinned down at him before leaning his face closer, to which Kenma instinctively shuffled away against the wall, placing the bottle he was drinking from to the side.

“Oh..didn’t realise..sorry”

He mumbled, standing up and moving the strands of hair from his face but they fell back in place anyway, just like usual. Picking up the bottle and placing it back with the others he then followed Kuroo to the locker room to get back into their school uniform.

“So what were you thinking about huh?”

Kuroo teased, brows raising up and down. Kenma looked at him like he was repulsed at the idea.

“Right, sorry, it’d be a miracle if you ever even talked to a girl in the first place…”

Kuroo grinned before grabbing his bag and slinging it over his shoulder watching as Kenma did the same, pulling his phone out of his pocket and going straight to it, just like usual.

“I wasn’t thinking about much anyway, just the training camp in July is all…”

“Oh right! That's soon isn’t it!… I can't wait to play against Karasuno again. Lets hope they’ve improved huh?”

Kuroo smiled widely, hand smacking lightly against the back of Kenma to which he jumped slightly at the touch before returning to his slouched position, he looked back to his phone as he sent a text back to Hinata.

“Oh uh yeah..that’d be good..”

“Hah! Maybe then you’ll start practicing more!”

He groaned quietly to himself as he begrudgingly made his way to practice. He didn’t feel like doing anything currently, much less do any sort of activity that would cause exertion. So he walked slowly, much slower than usual, and then he’d take his time changing into the volleyball uniform and then he’d go slower down to training. Yes. That's what he’d do. He looked down at his phone, responding to something Hinata sent him with a small smile on his face.

However when he got outside he stopped, hands in pockets, eyebrows raised. Watching the crowd of his teammates as they gawked at something happening inside the court, they muttered and giggled like little girls to themselves. What a bunch of idiots. When he walked closer he overheard Yamamoto talking to Fukunaga.

“That persons from your class right? Why’re they here? Do they have a partner?”

Fukunaga raised a brow.

“Yeah…their name’s (l/n)..”

He drifted off, turning his attention back to the court.

“Would you even have the courage to go ask them out, Yamamoto?”

Kuroo teased as he looked back at the boy, a wide smirk on his face.

“I-i..of course I would!”

Yamamoto spluttered, rubbing the back of his neck as he stammered and went back to looking inside. Yaku sighed.

“Don’t start you two.”

He warned

Kenma turned to Inuoka who was a bit to the side so he could see the interaction through the window.

“..hey..whats going on?”

Kenma tilted his head slightly to one side, cat-like eyes watching Inuoka for a second before looking into the window as he listened for the response.

“Oh hey Kenma! Someone’s talking to Coach Nekomata so everyone's come to the conclusion that they're going to become our manager! I think I saw them holding the poster I put up.”

The boy smiled at him.

“A manager..?”

He questioned looking up at Inuoka as he beamed a smile.

“Yeah! Wouldn’t that be so cool? We’ll be like those other amazing schools!”

“Uh..yeah..i guess..”

“You should probably change, practice is gonna start soon.”

Kenma looked down realising he was still in his uniform. He sighed quietly and nodded making his way to the club room. Practice kind of slipped his mind with all the commotion so the return back to reality was not very fun to say the least. Not to mention the idea of a new person helping manage the team was a lot. That meant talking to them…and getting to know them…and probably hanging out with them outside of school thanks to the others. Yeah. Not fun. But maybe this was just like another level he had to beat?
