The Man with the Cat Pins

Summary:

Remember the two Grandchildren from old Dr. Who? John & Gillian Who. Even the Doctor seems to forget about them, but not this one, as he and his very good Companion Frobisher take a Visit to them to cheer them up a bit.

Notes:

This Story doesn't spoil anything, but light Spoiler Warning for the VNA 'Conundrum', as this one does play around with the Ideas of that book regarding John & Gillian.

Anyway, a fun tale that even now I am still sort of proud of (probably won't last too long, lol)

Work Text:

The Day was sunny, John & Gillian were sitting at home looking outside from the Window.
"I wish we could go outside!", John sighed out loud.
"But Mother said we can't go outside!", Gillian reminded him, she was the more thoughtful out of the two.
"You're right..", John said, but he got interrupted by a Knock.

Knock knock.

The two Children walked to the Door and opened it, just to be surprised by a Man with a Cat Pin on his Coat.
"John! Gillian", the Man with the Cat Pin said.
Their eyes widen, "How do you know our Names?"
The Man with the Cat Pin grinned, "How could I forget my second and third favorite Grandchildren!"

Their eyes were now really wide, almost shocked.
"Doctor Who!", John said with an excited tone.
"No, he's just Grandfather to us, remember?", Gillian reminded him gently.
The Man with the Cat Pin smiled, "Yes, Grandfather indeed!"

As he stepped inside, the two Children had so many Questions.
"You changed your Face!", one of them said, jumping up and down.
"And you changed your Clothes", the other said as they both look at his colorful Coat.
"And you changed your Hair!"
"And your Language!", the two of them said together.

Doctor Who smiled at them, "Indeed I have, my Knowledge of Language has quite improved since the last time we saw each other, one could even argue my linguistics are up there with the Greats!"
The Children looked at each other, having understood zero of the Things that the funny Man with the Cat Pin said.
"Well, to keep it more simple, I improved!", he said with a gentle Smile.
"And I brought somebody with me!", the Man with the Cat Pin said as he takes off his Hat, revealing a Penguin!
"Never do that again to me, Doc", the talking Penguin said with a dizzy voice.
"A big talking Bird", John said with excitement.
"Don't be silly, John. Birds don't talk!", Gillian said with a clever demeanor.
"But this one does", the talking Penguin said, as he got himself ready with a Stick and a nice fancy Hat.

"What might seem strange to you, isn't very strange. I am Frobisher, nice to meet you, children", the Penguin sang as he slowly broke into a dance.
"But Penguins can't talk!", Gillian said with a firm tone.
"But Frobisher isn't a very regular Penguin!", the Man with the Cat Pin said.
The two Children's eyes widen.

"That's right, Doc!", the talking Penguin agreed as he stopped his little silly dance.
"Now that was quite enough, my friend. Up with you in the Hat!", the Man with the Cat Pin said.
Frobisher looked a bit sad, "But Doc, I wanted to sing like a real Broadway Star."
The Man with the Cat Pin gave him a sympathetic smile, "Oh don't worry you will, my Friend, just not now!"

Without any further arguments, Frobisher vanished into Doctor Who's Hat.
The two Children observed it with in awe.
"He is gone!", John said, confused.
"Are you a Magician now, Grandfather?", Gillian asked, almost not sure what to believe.

The Man in the Cat pin just gave them a soft Smile.
"Perhaps, perhaps not", he said with a teasing tone.
"But now I am must go, I'll see you around, I promise!"

But the Children looked sad.
Doctor Who hated the expression of sadness on Children's Face.
With a soft smile, he grabbed something out of his Pocket.
The Children looked closely, curious to see what it is.

"I believe those two are for you", the Man with the Cat Pin said.
He handed them over two other Cat Pins.
One of an orange Cat for Gillian.
One of a black Cat for John.

"But now I must leave, the Universe isn't waiting for me!", he said with a sadness underneath it.
He waved his two Grandchildren goodbye and went away.
Back to the TARDIS.

As he stood before his Ship, he looked with sadness at the small, simple yellow House.
"But are you real?", Doctor Who muttered to himself with a sad undertone.
But before he could answer his own Question, he heard a distress signal.
"Perhaps, but that'll have to wait. And besides.. I shall miss you both."

Doctor Who gave the yellow House one last Look, before he went into his Ship.
Off into the Stairs.

Perhaps he'll return to them.
Perhaps he'll find out the truth about them.
But for now, he can feel assured.
His two Grandchildren are in safe paws.
