Chapter Text

                     Chapter one

                              September 24th 1917

Emiline Pulled on her black stockings and laced up her boots by the firelight. She quickly fastened her corset before pulling on her petticoats, dress, apron, and over sleeves. Walking over to the small mirror on the boudoir she fastened her veil to her hair, before neatly putting on her nurses cape. She pushed open the tent opening and stridded out into the frigid still dark September air. She put her hands in her pockets as she walked, not quite enthusiastic for her day of long, hard work. Working in a fields hospital was not as exciting as she envisioned. This was her second month in Yorkshire. The hospital was an old manor, the family long gone, now filled with rows and rows of beds and operating rooms. She  stepped in the manor, and walked to the nurses room and hung up her cape.

She grabbed her lantern and stepped into the ward. Not five seconds later, a weary voice rang through the hall. “Miss? Some water please?” She nodded and walked to water pail, and scoped water into a glass. She shuffled over to his bedside and set down the water. She grabbed it with his shaking, bandaged hands, spilling a good deal over it over his night shirt. “Here, let me help you sir” she reached over and grabbed the cup from his tired hands and tipping it into his mouth. “Thank you” he laid is head back on the pillow and closed his eyes. Emiline Padded down the hallway, the light of her lantern shining against the large glass windows on the right side of the hall. The first light was just now coming, the dark sky becoming lighter. The lead ward nurse rushed over to her, her spectacles flashing in the lantern light. “Emiline! New batch of soldiers coming in at sunrise, run along and make all the empty beds” Emiline nodded and walked to the very few empty beds at the end off the hall.
