Work Text:

The thought that Hinata was beautiful never crossed Oikawa’s mind back then. Today, however, he watched as a stronger and older Hinata smiled at him in the middle of the afternoon, the bright sun illuminating his tan, sweaty skin. The backdrop of the wide, restless ocean and the powdery soft sand couldn’t steer his eyes away from the boy from Karasuno, who was laughing at Oikawa’s failed jump serve.

Brazil has been kind to you, Oikawa thought. But you have been kinder to me.

Beach volleyball was a different beast. There were too many new variables to account for to excel in it. Still, Oikawa felt positively electric, playing on the same side of the net as Hinata. Was this just a fraction of the thrill Kageyama felt when he was by this boy’s side?

No wonder you had him wrapped around your finger, Oikawa thought.

Still, Oikawa managed to adapt to the wind and sand. With Hinata by his side, he was unstoppable. The adrenaline reignited something in Oikawa that he didn’t know was extinguished.

Hinata’s friends ended up treating them to dinner as a congratulations for their win. After dinner, Hinata walked Oikawa to his hotel.

I can’t let this day end, Oikawa thought.

He invited Hinata over, and the two drank the overpriced beer in the mini fridge. Ever so generous with his smiles, Hinata made him feel as though there was nothing wrong in the world. It was as if nothing mattered but the joy they shared today. Oikawa wondered how he could possibly ever return the favor.

Light-headed and tipsy after an hour or two of alcohol and great conversation, they found themselves leaning against each other on the couch. When Hinata rested his head against Oikawa’s shoulder, the older boy couldn’t help but wonder how things got to this point.

So much of his past had been spent analyzing Hinata. Despite this, he never felt he knew the other boy more than he did today. A glimpse into his life in Brazil revealed something to Oikawa that he couldn’t deny: Hinata’s life was one of light and love.

He hooked a finger under Hinata’s chin and tilted his face up, hoping he could get a taste of that life.

In the end, it was Hinata who leaned in first.
