Chapter Text
Peanut was humming to himself as he placed all the books and what not that he needed for that day of school.
It was your average Friday - father off to work, Wenlang dad and his family busy with what they usually did on this day, he would get to see his cute Lele again... all in all, the young Enigma was looking forward to seeing the other boy, but also for the end of the week, which was when they usually spent time as a family, with both of his parents being busy CEOs and all...
However, that was one thing that confused Hua Sheng about that day.
His father had left as usual, with an oddly more worried look on his face, and even an oddly specific 'check on your papa before you leave for school' to his son before he left, and said papa, who would usually be up by now to get ready for his day and to see Peanut off, was still not up.
Was Papa sick?
It couldn't be that bad then if Father left, clingy as he usually was with his mate. But then again, maybe papa told him to leave...?
Confused and growing more worried by the minute himself, the 11-year-old zipped up his school bag and left it there, knowing the driver would be there soon to take him to school but wanting to make sure that his papa was fine, sleeping in like this was usually not something either of his parents did. If anything, it was more so Peanut's 'thing' (that the two of them teasingly blamed on Wenlang dad, but again, that wasn't Hua Sheng's fault that Wenlang dad needed uncle Gao Tu to wake him up otherwise he would be later everyday but anyways...)
Continuing with his humming, Peanut made his way to the huge master bedroom at the end of the hallway, calling his papa's name and frowning when he received no response.
Odd, just odd.
Papa would always respond to his Peanut, has done so since the little Enigma could remember, and probably even before then. So to receive nothing...
"Hey, I'm leaving for school school. Father said I should check on you, Papa, are you...?"
Standing in the open doorway, whatever he was about to say vanished into thin air, body frozen in sudden fear as he took in his papa lying on the bed, pale as a statue, sweating up a storm and was... that... b-blood?
"Papa!?"
Despite his suddenly frantic shout, the older man didn't respond, causing his son to rush to his side with tears building up in his eyes, reaching out to pat his papa's arms, shoulders, face... anything he could reach. In his panic, he did manage to realize that his father was still breathing but to his little ears, it seemed strangely hollow. Refusing to believe what he was seeing, Hua Sheng bolted for his papa's phone by the nightstand, knowing this was a situation where he had to be a big boy, he couldn't let his fear overtake him, otherwise Papa would... would..!
Dialing his father's number as quickly as he could (luckily, pretty fast, papa naturally had father on speed dial) and hoping the older Enigma wasn't in a meeting right now, Peanut hardly waited for a greeting before his sobs caught up with him.
"F-Father, p-papa.. p-papa is dying!"
Chapter Text
"We are doing... everything... can..."
"Doctor..."
"Sir, please!"
Sniffing with snot trailing down his face, Hua Sheng glanced at the closed door to his left, behind it his father and his papa's doctor arguing about stuff that his young mind, brilliant as it was, could hardly grasp. He wanted his papa, but a kind lady told him that he couldn't see him yet, that he wasn't feeling well but that they would do everything in their power to help him. He couldn't even have the comfort of his lovely Lele's presence, the other at home with Wenlang dad and uncle Gao Tu, ready to take him to their home for the night if his father decided so.
All in all, Peanut was alone.
He felt so alone.
Why couldn't he do anything for his papa? Why was his papa sick? True, he had been weirdly pale these past few months, his parents sometimes exchanging pointed, worried looks but whenever he would ask, both would reassure him that everything was fine. That there was nothing to worry about, that papa only had a stomach bug...
... for months, though?
Peanut may be just a kid, but he wasn't oblivious, his papa wouldn't be hospitalized over a regular 'stomach bug', his papa couldn't be dying! He couldn't lose his papa!
Just as he planned to stand up and go check with that nice lady if maybe he could his papa now, the door to his left opened, revealing his father and a pale doctor, who rushed away immediately towards the operating room containing his papa, where he had been for what felt like days now, but was only a few hours. Another contradiction, since when did a stomach bug need surgery.... no papa, no...
"Hua Sheng."
The younger Enigma turned to look back at his father, who sat down beside him and pulled out a tissue box, picking up a specific one and turning to clean up his son's face, regardless of the fresh tears trailing down making it an impossible task.
"F-father..."
"It will be alright." Hua Yong sounded like he didn't quite believe it himself, but that he wanted to be strong for the both of them. For papa, too. "Can you stay here? I need to go and support Mr. Sheng as much as possible, the doctor told me that my pheromones might make or break the matter. We... didn't really know, so we couldn't prepare. If it goes on for much longer, I will have a nurse come to take you outside to wait for Wenlang, alright? I know you want to stay here, but... your papa would never forgive me if I let you sleep over night at a hospital without being a patient yourself."
"I kn-know, father, but I can't just leave p-papa..."
"Shhh..." the older Enigma, still a bit awkward, pulled his son close to him into a hug. "... if all goes well, you will see him tomorrow and everything will be fine. W-we need to keep to your sleep schedule as much as possible, at least it's the weekend tomorrow so Mr. Sheng c-can't be too mad even if you stay up but..."
Peanut just hugged him tightly, knowing that even his strong, powerful father had moments where he felt weak, where he stuttered, where he didn't know what to do. Not too surprising, such moments usually involved his papa in some way. It was never this... dramatic, though, this tense. This real.
"F-father, p-papa will be fine, right? He isn't d-dying, right?"
The man couldn't respond, just holding his son as much as he could as new tears and snot ruined his shirt, the tissue box barely hanging on in his dominant hand. At this point, what could he say? Their son was too smart, it was hard to lie to him. And Hua Yong, for once in his life, thought that this wasn't a situation to lie about. He could only give him honesty now...
"Peanut, I don't know. I just don't."
So the father and son duo sat there, the younger now full on sobbing while the older tried to keep a blank face, tried to hold it all together because Mr. Sheng would need him soon enough, he couldn't break down. No matter what was and wasn't ailing his mate, he had to be strong, the rock for his exclusive Omega and their son, their little family...
And so, they waited.
Notes:
Decided to continue the angst for a bit.
What could be ailing Mr. Sheng? Who knows, it should be revealed in the next chapter (which Im aiming to be the last one and maybe an epilogue after, haven't decided yet)
Chapter Text
The scent of chocolate cosmos wafted through the air of the hospital corridor.
Worried. Confused. Fragile.
It's owner sat in a chair, facing what looked like double mirrors (he was still rather young, Enigma or not, he wasn't sure if he understood the kind lady well before she walked away to talk with his... their... parents) and staring inside at the closest little cube-shaped object.
Baby Girl 1. Baby Girl 2.
His sisters, merely but a few hours old now.
Hua Sheng idly remember a time when he was younger, about 3 or so years old, and asking when he would get a younger sister. The young Enigma couldn't recall why precisely a sister over just a sibling, but.... he also remembered his father, Hua Yong, offhandly and kind of coldly stating that it would never be happening because 'his papa could get hurt, we don't want that right Peanut?' and true to that, the toddler didn't want to see his papa hurt. Still didn't.
So how come he was here now, staring at not only one tiny sister, but two?
The doctor who was with the nurse before he left to go ahead to Peanut's parents talked about something along the lines of 'twins' and 'premature', but Hua Sheng couldn't wrap his mind around it. Not once did he see his papa act odd these past few months, sure, his parents were slightly more on edge and always muttering about something 'not happening' (whatever that meant) but would constantly reassure him that papa was fine, he was just going through an illness now but they were working on a cure for him, both being CEOs of important biotech companies of course.
He knew his parents wouldn't lie to him so.... were they lying to themselves about papa's condition? Did they think it was something, did they not dare to hope..?
Peanut's head hurt with all of these thoughts and he looked away briefly as another nice lady (a nurse, his mind supplied quickly) walked up to him from the other direction, quietly asking him if he was alright and if he needed anything, a worried look on her face. She must be a Beta, most likely at least, because he couldn't control his scent yet (not fully at least) and yet, she showed no reaction other than concern for him, so maybe it was his slightly gloomy expression.
How do you explain that you are fine, just confused, because for over a decade of your life, you were constantly told how you can only be an only child, how papa's health couldn't handle siblings and now... there were two of them.
At once.
"A-Are..." Hua Sheng coughed to clear his dry throat, the nurse nicely moving towards a vending machine nearby, grabbing him a bottle of water to drink. "... t-thank you. I wanted to ask if my... s-sisters... are they ok?"
Sure, he was concerned, but his papa (and father to an extent) raised him to be a polite boy, regardless of what his most likely designation would turn out to be after his father noticed that he was his perfect copy from childhood, so while they had an idea long before he presented, his papa didn't want him to have a big head on his shoulders, no matter who he or his parents were.
"Yes, don't worry." the nurse smiled at him kindly. "They were a bit... early, they needed a bit more time. That's why they are here now, so they can finish their growing and be ready to go home with you and your family. As for your papa, he fell asleep shortly after the birth of the youngest twin, but everything appears to be alright, we will keep an eye on him and you can come see him and father soon enough, alright?"
Nodding at her words, the kind Beta woman nodded at him then walked in the direction of the doctor and other nurse, leaving Peanut by himself again.
Well, himself, his sisters, and all the other here too soon babies but still.
Opening the bottle in his hands carefully, he tried to reign his scent in, sipping on the drink slowly because he was still confused. But he knew, he wouldn't be anymore before moving to see his papa, who needed him to be strong. Thats all he had to be, strong.
"Hua Sheng, are you still here?" the boy could suddenly hear his father's voice from the hallway around the corner the medical staff disappeared off to, and indeed, his father showed up soon enough, the look on his face carefully neutral and yet still soft, as though he was trying to hold it together as best as he could. "There you are, your papa woke up. We will go see him now but first..."
Blinking, Peanut was led by his father towards the mirror-like object, closer to the thing that currently housed his sisters.
"... I want to introduce you to your baby sisters." Hua Yong's mouth quirked in amusement. "You probably already thought about it, but I remember vividly telling you no over one sibling and now, not even a full decade later... Mr. Sheng is truly full of surprises, but then again, the both of us were in denial for the longest of time because this pregnancy was nothing like the one your papa had with you, so we didn't want to hope thinking it was something else and until now, Mr. Sheng was too scared to get himself checked out. I wish I didn't leave you two that morning, it wont be happening again."
Indeed, it was already nearly the morning of the next day after Hua Sheng found his papa bleeding in the master bedroom, definitely way past his usual bedtime but it seemed his parents decided this was an exception, for Wenlang dad and his family hadn't appeared yet. It was almost like Hua Yong could read his mind, because the older Enigma continued.
"Your godfather will be here in the morning, I told him the worst part was over with and that we wanted to have some time to ourselves, as a family... anyway..." the man's gaze moved from his son towards his newborn daughters, said son knowing his father well enough to see that spark of wonder in his usually cold eyes. "... where was I? Yes, your sisters..."
With his hand petting Peanut's shoulder, a small smile played on his lips.
"... Hua Baowei, the older one and Hua Yizhuo, the younger one."
Repeating the names quietly to himself, the now big brother placed a careful hand on the mirror, an answer grin growing on his face. His baby sisters. He would love and protect them...
... forever.
Notes:
And with that, the surprise is here! Well Im not sure how much of a surprise it is, but still.
I chose chocolate cosmos as Hua Sheng's scent because I imagine he would have a rare-ish one as an Enigma, and apparently this one smells like a mix of chocolate and vanilla (feel free to correct me if Im wrong). As for the names of the girls, I like these particular ones and their meanings so it was an easy choice to make.
For those who want fluff, the angst (should) be over with now, we have the epilogue left which will be mainly fluff and seeing how Hua Yong and Sheng Shaoyou do as parents of 3 kids now, when they spent so many years believing they would only have Peanut.
Of course, the girls will need nicknames too so if anyone has any suggestions, Im all ears. Probably not based of their names but yeah, I haven't decided anything yet myself.
As always thank you for reading!
Chapter 4: Epilogue: papa didn't leave peanut
Notes:
I would like to thank everyone for reading this fic.
Theres much more to come after this one (such as a ShengLele fic and a second chapter to Two Can Play That Game), so I will be working on one of those next, probably, unless another plot bunny finds me :D
I never expected this kind of support for any of my fics, it means a lot ^^
(also not mentioned in this fic but might be in future ones, the twins' nicknames are probably going to be Strawberry for Baowei and Raspberry for Yizhuo, because those were part of Shaoyou's cravings this time, even if he was in denial at the time. No real reason why but I think it would be cute to continue given they have Peanut and all)
Chapter Text
6 months later
Sheng Shaoyou hummed, not glancing away from the papers he was working as he listened to Hua Yong in the background, doing his best to wrangle their twin girls and an ever so amused Peanut.
That day when the twins were born seemed more like a distant memory now, but it still shocked the S-Class Alpha how easy his pregnancy had been this time (and not just one child, either!) compared to his firstborn's and he idly wondered if it was due to more exposure to his mate's scent compared to back then...
"Mr. Sheng, please! Help!"
Letting out a questioning side, said man turned around to find...
... Hua Yong lying on the floor, his son cackling in the background as his daughters (who were crawling and would probably be running soon, knowing how their oldest was at this age) climbed all over him, leaving the Enigma almost covered in babies. It made Sheng Shaoyou quickly reach for his phone to take a picture, ignoring his mate's pouting.
In his defense, it made for a cute moment so... he couldn't be blamed.
As he wondered about whatever one or both of his daughters would wind up being Enigma as well, Hua Sheng walked up to him (leaving his poor baba to his little sisters learning for the day) and hugged him, the gentle, sweet scene of chocolate cosmos filling the air around the Alpha as he leaned down to press a kiss to his forehead. He knew, all too well, the fear his poor son felt that day, thinking that he would lose his papa when he had no idea what was going on. Even now, six months later, he and Hua Yong weren't certain how it happened. It did make the Enigma question just how many children would they end up with... as not to worry his mate, Shaoyou didn't mention that he wouldn't be opposed to a whole football team of kids.
As long as they were his and Hua Yong's.
"Papa...?"
"Yes, sweetheart?" brushing a hand through his son's hair, the alpha hoped his son was feeling alright, they spent the last 6 months (and will do so in the future too of course) ensuring he didn't feeling bad or jealous in regards to his sisters, having been an only child for so long. "Is there something wrong?"
"N-no... I just..." Peanut sighed. "Should we save baba from Baowei and Yizhuo?"
"It's alright, your baba can deal with his growing army of children for a bit." Shaoyou pulled him closer into a hug, careful to not press on his own body, as he was still recovering. "You can tell me."
"I was just... w-worried..." the young Enigma sniffed, his features - so much like Hua Yong's and yet... - twisted with fear. "... l-love them but I didn't... want..."
"I know, I know..." looking over at his mate from above his son's head, their eyes in silent communication, the other man showed a similar reaction, it was visible his eyes. There still much to be worked on and repaired in their little but growing family, but to Shaoyou it was fine. They would get there someday, he was certain of it. "... papa didn't leave Peanut."
And he never will, not if he (and Hua Yong) had anything to say about it. Standing up with Hua Sheng's help, the duo walked towards the rest of their family.
They had all the time in the world.
